Chapter 2
After rushing in the direction the little boy had pointed to, the dwarves have yet to find any trace of his mother and these men that had captured her. Thorin had feared that maybe they were too late, maybe the men had dragged the woman off to Mahal knows where and had their way with her before killing her. His heart dropped at this thought, just thinking about the poor boy waiting at camp for his mother, the mother he might not see again if they don't find her soon.
He was starting to lose hope in finding her when the dwarves suddenly stop as they hear a man roaring in pain, and then a woman's scream for help a few seconds later.
"This way!" Thorin calls out.
Leading the way, Thorin rushes on towards the scream, praying they're not too late. They soon come to a clearing where they see five men; two are pinning a woman to the ground, who is gagged with hands tied behind her back, two others are standing and watching them while the biggest of them is straddled over the woman, a dagger raised and ready to kill her. Kili raises his bow and fires an arrow, which whooshes through the air and thuds into the head of the man making him fall off the woman and onto the ground dead, with a thud.
After hearing a woosh and a thud, I open my eyes and let out a muffled cry as I see an arrow sticking out of the side of Ernie's head before he falls off me to the side. It was then that all hell broke loose as five short men charged out of some bushes with a roar, all manner of weapons drawn, except for guns, and went straight for the unsuspecting men, killing them all with ease.
I try backing away as much as I can, especially when one of the short men comes over. Looking at him with fear in my eyes, I still can't help but notice his appearance; long black hair which has two braids, blue/grey eyes and a black moustache and short beard. His outfit definitely reminds me of something from a renaissance festival or a LARP game; bronze chest plate with a black tunic over it and held closed at the waist by a belt. He has a long blue coat on which is lined by fur, and something tells me it's not faux fur either. He wears black trousers, boots, he also wields a small wooden branch on his arm like a shield.
Sensing my fear, the man sheathes his sword and hold his hands up in a placating way and speaks in a soft but deep voice.
"It is alright, I will not hurt you. My name is Thorin, we are here to help you, your boy found us."
At the mention of Aiden, my eyes go wide and fill with tears. Knowing he is safe fills me with so much relief and emotion. I allow the man, Thorin, to kneel beside me, taking the gag from my mouth so I can speak.
"Aiden found you?"
He smiles gently. "Aiden? Is that his name? It is a strong name."
"Is he alright? Is he safe?"
He nods. "He is completely fine. He is currently with some trusted friends of mine."
I smile, the relief practically flooding me. Feeling my hands becoming free from the bonds, I tun and see another man, younger than Thorin, kneeling there and putting a dagger away as he pulls the ropes off. The young man has long blond hair with quite a few braids, blue eyes and a beard and moustache which is braided on either side of his lips. He wears the same sort of clothing as his elder, but his are brown.
Rubbing my aching wrists, I smile at him. "Thank you."
He smiles back. "You are welcome, my lady."
The two men then help me to my feet, which causes me to cry out in pain as I put weight on my bad leg, gripping onto their arms so I don't fall.
"You are hurt?" Thorin asks, his hold on me tightening.
I nod. "Yes, one of the men shot me in the back of the leg with an arrow."
Both men look at the wound before looking at each other. Thorin growls something in a language I can't understand, before I am suddenly swept up in his arms, which makes me give a yelp of surprise. I look up at Thorin, opening my mouth to object, but he stops me.
"You cannot walk on that. This way, we can quickly get you to our healer and your son."
I nod after a slight hesitation. The quicker I am with Aiden, the better.
"My rucksack-" I begin, pointing in the direction it was tossed in, which was the same direction the men had come from.
"We have them, do not worry." the blond man says as he nods to three others.
One of them, the youngest with shaggy brown hair and stubble, has it in his hands and is looking over my rucksack in confusion and curiosity.
Thorin then turns to the two older. "Take their food and any healing provisions they may have. Leave the rest, someone will find them."
"Will do, Thorin." the one with red hair answes.
Thorin and the two younger men then move through the forests, Thorin still carrying me.
It is not long until I see the orange glow of a fire through the trees and we soon come upon a camp, which is by a cliff's edge where there were other men huddled around a fire with ponies and a horse nearby, all of them looking up in worry and concern when we arrive. I notice all but one are small in stature with beards apart from two, one of the two being the shortest and I notice he is bare-footed and has hair on his feet. One of the men is tall and has a long grey beard and hair and wearing grey robes and a pointed hat.
"Mummy!" I hear Aiden's voice.
Looking over, I give a large sigh of relief as he runs over. I lean my hand down and touch his face as he reaches up for me.
"Oh, Aiden. Thank goodness you are safe." I say as I run a hand through his hair.
"Thorin, what happened?" one of the small men asks with a soft, smooth voice.
I look in the direction of the voice to see one of the men had stepped forward his beard forked in two and as white as his hair.
"We took care of the bandits before they were able to do serious harm, though the woman is injured. Oin, can you take care of her?"
"Aye, bring her over here, lad."
I look to the voice and see a dwarf with grey hair and beard which is braided and curled around as well as a long, straight moustache.
Thorin walks me over to where the man, Oin, is and lays me down after explaining what happened. As he's looking me over, Aiden kneels beside me, looking as though he wants to cry, but trying to be brave for me.
"Mummy. . ."
I smile at him as I put a hand to his cheek. "I'm fine, sweetheart."
"Fili, Kili, come take the boy. This is something he shouldn't see." I hear Thorin say.
Looking up, the brunette and blond from before coming over and the blond reaches out to take Aiden, but Aiden huddles closer to me in fear.
"Shhh. It's okay carino, they won't hurt you. Go with them, it'll be okay."
He looks to the two men in hesitation before going with them. I gasp slightly as a sharp pain erupts from Oin trying to get the fabric of my leggings away from the wound.
"Sorry lass, this is going to hurt." he apologises.
"Don't you have anaesthesia?" I ask worriedly. I know I have a high tolerance for pain, but I know this is something even I won't be able to handle much of.
He looks to me in confusion, looking to his trumpet for a moment before looking back. "Some what now, lass?"
I frown. "Anaesthesia? It numbs the pain?"
He nods, now understanding what I'm saying. "I have something that will numb it a bit, but not much. It's still going to hurt a lot. The arrowhead is deep in your leg, I'm going to need to cut it out."
I groan as I lay my head back down, putting aside the confusion of the drug for now. That's when someone sits next to me, looking up, I see the man from before who spoke to Thorin. He gives me a grandfatherly smile as he settles himself down.
"You will be fine, not to worry lass." he says, his voice matching his smile.
I give a weak smile of my own.
"What is your name?" he asks.
"Sophia."
"Sophia. That is a lovely name. My name is Balin."
I smile at him. "It's nice to meet you, Balin. I hope Aiden wasn't too much trouble for you."
"Oh no, no trouble at all lass. We managed to get him calm and distracted enough with stories and something to eat, while we were waiting."
I smile and nod as Balin looks behind me to Oin, his face becoming serious, so I know it's time. I take a shaky breath as I dig my hands into the dirt below me. That's when Balin takes one my hands into his own.
"Hold onto me, lass. You will be fine."
I just hold onto his hand and grit my teeth together, trying not to scream out as I feel the first cut.
Thorin watches the woman, not being able to help but feel sympathy and anger for her situation. Women and children are supposed to be treated like the precious jewels they are. Instead, those bandits were just planning on using, abusing and hurting her. He also felt proud of her for being brave and strong enough to send her son away, to keep him safe. Even though she had no idea whether he would be safe, she knew he would be safer than if he stayed. Because of her act, Aiden was able to come find them and save his mother just in time.
Looking over to the boy, he sees him silently crying in between his nephews, clinging onto the strange packs he and his mother has. In fact, a lot about them are strange. The packs, the clothing, and even how the woman spoke. She spoke with an accent that he didn't know, so couldn't think of where she came from. He can tell they are not from around here, but where could they be from?
"Intriguing are they not?" Gandalf asks as he stands beside him.
Thorin nods. "Indeed. They are not from here, that much is certain."
Gandalf lets out a thoughtful hum but says nothing more. Looking to the wizard, Thorin can tell he knows, or may know something, and is not telling him. As he is about to ask, a strangled cry comes from the woman. Looking over, he sees her struggling, eyes closed and her free hand almost hitting Oin as she tries to stop him causing her more pain. He cannot blame her, he has been in this position before, having an arrowhead buried in him and someone having to cut it out. Even though he was able to take the pain, it was still extremely painful.
The pain was unbelievable. I may be able to take pain, but I have never had pain like this. Even being in labour wasn't this excruciating. I unwillingly let out a strangled cry, my right arm subconsciously swinging out to Oin, but not reaching him, Spanish curses just slipping out of my mouth. That's when I feel someone take my free hand and knowing Balin is holding my left hand in both of his, not being able to stop me from lashing out without having to hover over me, I open my eyes and am surprised to see Thorin kneeling beside me, gently holding my hand in his, his blue eyes staring into my own brown ones.
"It is almost over, lass. Just keep looking at me and it will be done soon." he says, his deep voice speaking with such gentleness and reassurance I wouldn't expect from someone as gruff looking as him.
It's not something I'm used to. Being spoken to in such a way by a man. The last man to speak to me like that was my father before he died. And now, I have been given nothing but kindness and respect from these strangers.
I continue to keep my gaze on Thorin as he said, both he and Balin giving me comforting words as I squeeze their hands. Their comfort works as they both keep me grounded, almost to the point where I can't feel the pain, until I am stitched together. But even then, Thorin keeps my focus on him. Finally, after what feels like hours, Oin says the words I've been waiting to hear.
"There. All done, lass. Just need to wrap it."
I let out a breath of relief as my head slumps back onto the ground.
Thorin smiles at me, causing my heart to skip a beat. "You did well, lass."
"Sophia." at his look of confusion, I say more clearly. "Sophia. That's my name."
He nods. "Well, Sophia. Once you are more comfortable, I would like for us to talk, if that would be alright."
I nod before he gets up and walks off. Balin stays with me until Oin is finished and both men help me to sit up and that's when Aiden runs over and sits in between my legs to cuddle up to me. I smile as I hold him close. Balin stands and walks away while Oin is cleaning up his supplies.
"I'm alright, carino. I'm alright."
He starts to sob in my chest. "I was so scared! I thought I wouldn't see you again!"
I kiss his head. "No, sweetie. I'll never leave you. You know this, right?"
He nods in my chest as I calm him down while humming. He is soon asleep, having tired himself out from crying. A few minutes later, the brunette and blond from before walk over.
"How are you feeling?" The blond asks.
I smile at him. "Better now, thank you for asking. . .are you Fili or Kili?"
He smiles back. "Fili."
"And Kili." The brunette says as he steps forward.
"At your service." They both say as they bow.
I blink surprised by the simultaneous greeting but smile at them. "I am Sophia. It's a pleasure to meet you. Obviously, you know my boy, Aiden."
Kili smiles at him. "We do. In fact, he's why we're here. Our uncle wants to speak with you, and we'll take care of him for you."
Nodding in the direction he indicated, I see Thorin and Balin standing by the cliff edge with the tall man with the pointed hat. I nod, allowing Kili to take Aiden, who luckily sleeps through the movement and Fili reaches down to help me up. I wince and hiss in pain a little as he does, holding it up to keep weight of it.
"Are you alright?" Fili asks in concern.
I nod. "I'll be fine."
He also nods as he puts an arm around my waist and allow me to lean onto him as he walks me over to the three men. That's when Thorin and Balin take me from Fili and get me seated on a boulder.
"Thank you, Fili." Thorin says to him, causing Fili to smile at his uncle before walking back to Kili.
"How are you feeling, Sophia?" The tall man asks.
Normally, I would be surprised at how a stranger knows my name, given I haven't spoken to him yet, but I just assume either Thorin or Balin told him.
"Much better now I am away from those men." I turn to Thorin. "Which reminds me, I have yet to thank you properly for saving my son and I."
He shakes his head. "No thanks are necessary. I am just glad we got to you before they could do anything worse to you."
I smile before turning my attention to the man as he speaks.
"Forgive me for saying so, but your clothes. . ."
I look down at myself. Black leggings, now torn, tan walking boots, lilac t-shirt, black jacket.
"What about them?"
"They are. . . strange."
"Not as strange as all of your clothing. I would suspect you are LARPing or something. But I wouldn't have been this badly injured if that was the case."
"What is LARPing?" Balin asks in confusion.
I look to him. "It's Live Action Role Playing. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. The names, the medieval weapons and even the costumes. I mean, what are you supposed to be? A wizard or something?"
He looks affronted by my tone of voice. "Why, yes. I am a wizard. My name is Gandalf. Gandalf the Grey."
I raise an eyebrow at this. "Okay then "Gandalf" I'll bite. Can you prove it?"
He holds out his hand which is empty and as I watch, a ball of fire suddenly erupts in his hand, which then turns into various colours. I just stare at his hand in disbelief before looking between Thorin and Balin and then to the group of men by the fire. That explains Oin's confusion with anaesthesia, it's a modern drug and name.
"My god. . .this is real. . .all this is actually real. . ." I say, feeling my breathing quickening.
Balin, sensing a mini panic attack coming, sits next to me and rubs my back while holding my hand.
"That it is, my dear. I know this must be a shock to you, but it is clear you are not of this world." Gandalf explains.
"You don't say." I snap sarcastically.
"It's alright, lass. Everything will be alright." Balin says comfortingly.
Bless him. While finding out for the first time that other worlds exist, he's still trying to comfort me first.
"Not of this world? You mean, she is from another world? Is that even possible?" Thorin asks in disblief.
Gandalf nods. "Is it completely possible, Thorin. Sophia and her son are proof of that. Do you remember how you came to be here, Sophia?"
I nod. "Yes, clearly. Aiden and I were out camping and while we had gone hiking, we were chased by my-someone. Next thing I knew, I woke up a few hours ago in this forest."
Gandalf nods, luckily not noticing my slip up, or he did but is ignoring it. "It appears, my dear, the Valar saw fit to give you and your son mercy by bringing you here, we are too far from Bree."
"The Valar?"
"They are the deities of this world."
I nod in understanding, now finally calming down enough to where Balin has taken his hand from mine, but still has a hand on my back, just in case.
"The question is now, what do we do with Miss Sophia and Aiden? We cannot exactly go back."
Balin nods. "They will have to come with us. At least until we can get to somewhere safe for them."
Thorin sighs. "You are right. I may not like it, but it is the only way for them to be safe." he then turns to me. "Can you fight?"
"With weapons? No. But, I did start taking self defence lessons a few months ago, if that helps."
"It is a start. Once your leg is healed, if you are still with us, we will begin your training. Until then, I swear to you, we will do all we can to keep yourself and your son safe."
I smile at this. "Thank you, Thorin. I don't want to be a burden on you, or your men."
"Dwarves. We are not men."
I blink. That explains why they're short. "Okay, dwarves. But, in my world, I was a doctor, a healer, so I could help with Oin."
He nods, looking impressed. "That would help."
Balin turns to me. "If you don't mind me asking, lass, what was that strange language you were speaking?"
I frown at him. "Strange language?"
"Yes, you were speaking it when Oin was working on your leg. It didn't sound pleasant whatever it was."
After a second, a look of realisation comes over my face. "Oh! That. Sorry, it's not strange to me, so I didn't get it. That's what we call Spanish from my world."
"Can everyone speak it?" Throin asks, now curious as he didn't hear it.
I shake my head. "Nope. I only speak it because I'm half Spanish. My dad was born in a country called Spain, where over ninety percent of the population speaks it. I've been speaking it since I was old enough to talk."
He nods in understanding.
"And, what were you saying?"
I let out a little giggle. "I'd rather not say, but let's just say, I was cursing up a storm."
They look at me in surprise for a moment before Balin chuckles.
"Lass, I have a feeling we're going to be seeing a few more surprises from you while you're with us."
I just grin at this.
Thorin, after giving a fond shake of his head, holds his hand out to me. "Come, I am sure you are hungry after your ordeal."
"Oh no, I don't think I could eat anything right now."
"Alright. Let us return, we can introduce you to everyone."
He then reaches out, helps me to stand before wrapping his arm around my waist and helps me back to the others where he gently sets me down beside a boulder next to Fili, Kili and Aiden, who is still sleeping. Thorin then begins to explain to everyone that Aiden and I will be joining them all until we can get to somewhere safe and then introduces me to everyone.
First off are the dwarves; Obviously I know of Balin, Thorin and his nephews Fili and Kili and Oin. Them there's Oin's brother Gloin, who has magnificent long red hair and a beard which holds many braids. Balin's brother Dwalin, which surprised me, who is a bald dwarf and one of those who had also rescued me, as well as Gloin.
And then there are the brothers Bofur – the hatted dwarf, Bombur – the overweight dwarf, who has a marvellous beard which circles around his rotund belly and their cousin Bifur – who surprises me at first as I see the axe in his head, but I quickly ignore it as I smile at him, who gives a small smile back and a nod of the head.
Then there are the brothers Dori – who has intricate braids in his grey hair and beard. Nori – red haired dwarf which is tied into three points above his head and his beard braided into three sections, I'm also sure I can see his eyebrows braided into his hair. And then Ori – the only dwarf with short hair, apart from Dwalin who has hair around his head. Ori's hair is the same colour as his brother Nori's.
And finally, I meet the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who gives me a welcoming smile. Bilbo really surprises me. I had never met a Hobbit before, never knew they existed.
"It is a pleasure to meet you all." I say with a smile.
"As it is to meet you, lass. Are you hungry? We still have some stew left." Bofur offers.
"No, thank you, Bofur. I think I'm going to get some sleep. It's been a long day."
He gives a sympathetic smile. "Of course. Sleep well."
I smile as the other dwarves say their goodnights and I wince as I settle down to sleep while Fili lays Aiden down next to me. I thank him as I wrap my arm around Aiden and close my eyes, hoping that tomorrow will be a better day. Feeling a weight placed on me, I open my eyes to see Thorin placing a blanket over Aiden and I. Smiling, I thank him before closing my eyes again.
My eyes snap open at the sound of screeching and I sit upright thinking we're in danger. Looking around, I just see the dwarves, Gandalf and Bilbo and no hint of danger, though I can still hear the echoes of the screech on the night air.
Feeling a jolt next to me, I look to see Aiden's head whipping this way and that, his eyes wide in fear and terror. I pull him onto my lap and allow him to cling to me as I hold him close. I also notice we are not the only ones to have heard the sound as Bilbo is looking around worriedly as well as Fili and Kili, who are on watch. Bilbo rushes over to the two brothers.
"What was that?"
"Orcs." Kili replies.
I frown. What are Orcs? But as I hear another scream, I suddenly realise. . .I don't want to know the answer to that, not wanting to expose Aiden to whatever made that sound.
"Orcs?" Bilbo asks, also wondering what these creatures are.
Besides me, I also feel Thorin jolt awake at another screech. I hold Aiden close as I hear him whimper, making soothing noises as I gently rubbing his back. Seeing Thorin's hand be placed gently on Aiden's head, I look up to see him watching us, his eyes looking at me in askance. I just smile at him, reassuring him we are fine. He gives a small smile before placing his other hand on my shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze, which does bring me a lot of comfort, as well as safety.
I look up as Fili begins to speak. "Throat-cutters. There'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them."
Kili follows on. "They strike in the wee small hours when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet; no screams, just lots of blood."
Bilbo looks away in fright, looking in the direction the noise came from; Fili and Kili look at each other and begin laughing. I shiver. My blood running cold with what Fili and Kili just said. Aiden holds me tighter as he whimpers again, causing Thorin to squeeze my shoulder tighter before standing and turning a stern face to his nephews.
"You think that's funny? You think a night raid by orcs is a joke?"
Kili looks down in shame. "We didn't mean anything by it."
"No, you didn't. You know nothing of the world."
Thorin walks off to the edge of the cliff and looks out over the valley. As I'm watching him, I suddenly have a feeling that Thorin has had some sort of bad experience with these Orcs, and not a good one at that, which soon becomes clear as Balin walks up to Fili and Kili.
"Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs."
Sensing a story, Bilbo sits besides me as I make myself comfortable to listen, Aiden still in my arms. I would wish for him to not to listen, if this is going to go how I think it will, being too young to hear of such things. But, maybe this will help him learn of the dangers of this world, and to know he can trust these people around us to protect him. I just hope it doesn't give him nightmares.
"After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first. Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs lead by the most vile of all their race: Azog, the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin. He began by beheading the King."
My eyes go wide in horror at this, mouth dropping slightly, as I turn to Thorin, who still has his back to us.
"Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner or killed, we did not know. We were leaderless. Defeat and death were upon us."
I look down as I realise that this King, Thror, must have been some sort of relation to Thorin. I can't imagine what Thorin must have felt to have witnessed that.
"That is when I saw him: a young dwarf prince facing down the Pale Orc. He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armour rent. . .wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield."
As he explains how Thorin had defeated Azog, I can picture it in my head like a movie, watching as Thorin, wielding said branch and slicing the pale Orc's arm clean off, although, because I have no idea what an Orc looks like, I'd picture him as a tall, pale and ugly man. I do frown as Balin continues the tale. This story is familiar to me. . .I know of it but I can't place it. Like a lost memory. I shake my head a little as I turn my attention back to Balin.
"Azog, the Defiler, learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied and drove the orcs back. Our enemy had been defeated. But there was no feast, no song that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And I thought to myself then, there is one who I could follow. There is one I could call King."
Looking to Thorin, I then notice that the other dwarves, who had all awoken at some point during the story, are now standing and facing Thorin, who turns towards us all. Even from here, I can see his eyes glossy, full with unshed tears. He walks between the dwarves towards the fire as Bilbo voices a question that's also on my mind.
"But the pale orc? What happened to him?"
Thorin is the one to answer as he reaches us. "He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago."
As he settles back against the boulder and the dwarves back on the ground, I see Balin and Gandalf sharing looks with each other, out of the corner of my eyes and somehow this does not bring me any comfort to Thorin's words.
Looking down to Aiden, I smile as he has fallen back asleep. Thankfully a little story telling has worked. Though, I do wonder how much of Balin's story he heard and took in. Feeling a hand on my shoulder, I look up to see Thorin looking over Aiden and I.
"How is the lad?" He asks with concern.
I smile. "He's fast out. He's a tough little boy, or he likes to act tough at least. But I know he scares easily."
He nods. "I apologise for my nephew's thoughtless words."
I shake my head. "It's alright. It's good to hear about the dangers of this new world, right? Then we can be prepared for it."
He gives a little chuckle. "That is a good way to think about it. Try and get some more sleep. We leave at dawn."
I nod and reach up to take Thorin's hand as he's removing it from my shoulder, causing him to look at me questioningly.
"I am sorry for the grief you've been through. I couldn't imagine being in your position."
He looks to me for a moment before giving me a nod of thanks and a squeeze of the hand before I remove mine.
"Get some sleep, Miss Sophia. You'll both need all the rest you can get."
I bid him goodnight before laying myself and Aiden down, Aiden stirs a little before snuggling closer into me, causing me to smile. I lay awake for a little longer, staring at the night sky as I think about all that has happened this night.
Apparently, Aiden and I have been transported from our world to this one, attacked by bandits and saved by dwarves. Thinking about the dwarves, hobbit, and wizard, all the names are familiar, and just like the story, I cannot think how I could know them beforehand since I have never been here before. I sigh as I turn over and with the story and the screeches still fresh in my mind, close my eyes to sleep, Aiden snuggled safely in my arms.
Well, there we have it, Chapter 2 done and up! Hope you all enjoyed! Please leave me your reviews. I also accept constructive criticism.
