Nevertheless, This Is The Story Of How I Became The Greatest Hero.
This was a spectacular sight. A giant monstrous villan was making a large scene, nearly knocking the train line off of the railways. Midoriya was jotting down notes as fast as he could, somewhat pondering who would stop this one from furthering his assault. Then, Kamui Woods came from the west and shot wood to sling himself near the tracks while grabbing the vilians' attention.
Kamui prepared his special attack, the lacquered chain prison. As the wood shot from his arm, the villain was quickly drop kicked by a giant woman. Izuku was surprised at the sight and realized that this was a new hero and started to quickly jolt down notes about her in his hero notebook. He, along with the crowd, almost completely forgot the Kamui was even there. Izuku was in between writing and being awestruck with the new hero. Noting down everything observable from this first sighting. Soon enough, the vilian was arrested by the police and taken into custody. The crowd dispersed. However, Izuku was still writing in his journal. He had started to sketch down the heroine when a somewhat chubby guy called him out. "Hey, what are you writing down there? Wait... You are a fan boy, aren't you?"
Izuku felt somewhat embarrassed and scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, I guess."
The man seemed to be pleased with the response. "Ah, I had figured. Well, with the dedication and eye for detail. I think you would be a great hero." He raised his thumb in support. "Keep it up!"
Izuku was somewhat taken aback by the positivity of the man and had smiled back. It was one of the nicest things that had been said to the boy. Izuku felt somewhat embarrassed and scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, I guess." Midoriya made his way to his school. Not that he was looking forward to going, though.
He made it to Aldera with some time remaining. Thankfully, though, since he was quirkless, he was, for the most part, ignored. All he needed to do was not run into him. Fortunately, he was lucky in this regard. He went to his desk, kept his head down, and opened his journal to improve on his sketch work. After all, there was some time to kill before class. After some quiet deliberation, he decided on an image more traditional, rather than the hero focused drawings he usually doodles.
In the back of his notebook he drew two rather detailed illustrations. A Tengu and an Oni. Both of which had rather heroic depictions. The 14 year old took some rarely felt pride in the drawings. It was as if he had a connection to the imagery. Especially the Oni. No particular reasoning that he could justify though. As he thought about it he heard the other students enter the classroom.
"Quiet down, I know you are all exited but I have something important that would be entirely benificial for you to listen to." The teacher spoke with a tone more stern than usual, so the class was now at attention. Izuku took this opprotunity to close his notebook and discretly bring it closer to himself.
"Good, now since you are all third years now you all should start seriously thinking about what carrer you are going to go down in the future." These words got the classes attention.
"Now I would hand out applications for what you would apply to, but..." The teacher's stern voice grew more stern as anticipation rose. "Pretty much all of you have applied to the Hero Course!" He pretty much dropped his tone when he said that and the class cheered for the fact that he had actually read the room.
"Yes, Yes, all of you have wonderful quirks!" Once again, Midoriya was entirely glossed over, but then again he didn't really notice that. "But using your quirks in the classroom is not allowed still!"
"Sensei, don't lump us all into a single group. After all, i'm not going to be stuck at the bottom with the rest of these rejects." Said the explosive blond seated right in front of Midoriya. Almost immediately, the othet students got riled up and called him out for his unkind comments to the others.
The teacher spoke up. "Ah right, you applied to U.A. Didn't you Bakugo?" The rest of the class went on about how hard it is to get accepted by U.A.
Bakugo stood up on his chair. "Thats right. And that is why you are not on my level. I aced the mock test. I am actually the only one who can get into U.A, I will no doubt surpass All Might and become the top hero. My name will be written down as one of the winners in history!"
Then the teacher made a passing remark that Midoriya really wished he did not make. "Oh, it seems Midoriya also applied to U.A." The room went quiet for a second as Midoriya shrunk in his seat. Then everyone started to laugh at him.
"Really, you can't just expect to be let in because you studied hard." A random student in the class said in a mean manner.
He tried to explain himself. "Well, they got rid of that rule recently... There is no precident-" Bakugo slammed his hand on the table. Midoriya fell out of his chair and slowly backed to the wall.
"Deku, you are below the rejects. You are quirkless, remember? How can someone as useless as you ever hope to stand in the same ring as me. Did you actually think that just trying hard enough would make us equals?"
Quivering, Midoriya stammered out. "No, no it's not like that. It's just that it has been my dream for a real long time. You never know if you don't try."
Bakugo's reaction told him that was the wrong response. "Oh, you are just trying. Is this some sort of game to you? Heroes dedicate themselves to their work and you think you can stand among them just because you really want to? You're just takinf the test for fun, is that it? How can you even hope to stand among us! YOU ARE QUIRKLESS!"
Midoriya couldn't talk back. The way everybody looked at him made him ashamed for even applying. Ashamed for the audacity to dream. He froze, then he quietly picked up his seat and sat back down. The rest of the school day was like a haze. He didn't retain anything taught, but at least no one payed any sort of attention to him after that. At least until the end of the day when it was time to go home.
Midoriya looked through his notifications and wondered about sightseeing some new hero stuff on his way home. As he was putting his notebook away, Bakugo grabbed it out of his hand. "We aren't done talking, Deku."
One of Bakugo's goons inspected the notebook. "Hero analysis for the future, seriously Midoriya?" Bakugo's goon teased.
"Hey, it's nothing really. Just some notes that I wrote. So no harm no foul... Right? Can you please give it back?" Midoriya pleaded. Bakugo instead crumpled and exploded the outside pages. Then he threw it out the window. Midoriya stared in disbelief.
"Hero's on top have stories that go back to their middleschool days, well... I plan to be the only one from this dump to get into U.A... And as you know, I am a perfectionist. So, revoke your application and we can forget this little incident... I belive we have an understanding no?"
Bakugo then made his way to the hallway. "Actually, there is a way for you to be a hero if you feel so inclined... Take a swan dive off of a building that is nice and big and pray to whatever god that exists that your reincarnation is at least useful in some way with your new quirk. I mean you can't be THAT unlucky twice, right Deku?"
Midoriya slowly turned to Bakugo, feeling unaturally bold. "What did you say?"
Bakugo rolled his eyes and told his goons. "Listen just go on ahead of me. I've clearly got more to say to Scarface over here since he didn't get the message." His goons looked at eachother and shrugged, leaving the greenet and the blonde alone.
He put his hand on Midoriya's shoulder. "Listen to me and listen good because I am only going to say this once... Stay out of my fucking way you useless idiot. I know you have some grand delusion of being able to be of some use as a hero, let alone as a person. But reality is a fickle bitch and yet you deny the truth still. Take the hint Deku, quit while you are still ahead. You'll live longer that way. Also FYI, you will never find her. It's been eight years and there is no trace of her anywhere so you can just stuff both of your dreams since she was quirkless. Just. Like. You." He patted Midoriya on the shoulder. "NOW I belive we understand eachother? But in case you don't..." Bakugo raised his hand with sparks going off. "I'll remind you of what we discussed here... Nonverbally."
Bakugo pushed Midoriya aside and left the room. Midoriya just couldn't belive the words that came out of his mouth. Remembering the scarface comment, he instinctivly touched his left cheek. The scar from that day hurt in the afternoon light. He then suddenly remembered his notebook being thrown out the window. He rushed down the stairs to find where it landed... Which it landed in the fountain.
There, at the edge of the fountain, a green spirit only 10 inches tall wearing nothing but a apron and a ceramic bowl on it's head, was tugging the burned, waterlogged, against the koi... It lost miserably. Midoriya quickly grabbed his notebook. "Stupid fish... It's not food." He then scooped the little spirit out of the fountain with the bowl. "He isn't food either."
Midoriya could always see things like these. Though he never thought of it as a quirk. He didn't tell anyone, either. They already thought he was delusional. He didn't want to have an offical schizofrenia diagnosis on top of that. On account that no one else could see it. He knew that these things talk, but Midoriya could only see them. Understanding them was a different issue.
The little spirit jumped for joy at being rescued from the comparitivly collosal fish. Making very cute noises in thanks. It then had jolted straight and went to a nearby tree. Midoriya simply observed what it was doing.
The little spirit then pulled out from near the roots a parculiar gemstone. It feigntly glowed with gold. The spirit then waddled back to the teenager and presented the odd gem to the boy.
"Y-you want me to have this?" The spirit nodded. Odd that these things could understand him in return. "You don't need to do that, really." The spirit made gestures reaching up to his hand with the gem in both of its hands. "Well... I guess I can't refuse you."
Midoriya gently took the stone and raised it up to be even with his eyes. It shined most beautifully. Meanwhile the spirit did a most audacious dance. When it was done it picked up a stick and went... Somewhere. He never actually thought about where the little guys go after he sees them.
He looked back at the stone in his hand... It's glow was mesmerising, very beautiful, after a few moments he got his mind refocused and put the strange crystal in his bag. He started to walk towards home the long way. For some reason though, he was getting a bit upset. He thought about it and he realized in hindsight what Bakugo said was getting to him after all. He began muttering to himself. "Idiot... If I took your advice and actually killed myself, you'd be suspended for provoking suicide..."
The back of Izuku's mind had a different thought, almost as if a quiet thought called out in his murky thinking. "Are you serious? He told you to kill yourself and you are more worried about his perminent record than what he said to us? The fact that he thought that it was an acceptable thing to say doesn't bother you at all?" The thought was quiet, but defiant. He had no idea where that thought came from, but he couldn't help but agree after a moment.
Bakugo was a bully, but even he never said anything along the lines of that before today. But obviously that changed recently. He peeled his mind away from this event. Instead remembering times that were far simpler.
How he would sit with her and watch that old All Might debut video. Her comforting him after both of their diagnosises... Eventually, he remembered the day she was taken. The day that his face was scarred by a monster.
This walk down memory road was not making him feel better.
As he walked along the streets of Mustafu, he found himself near an underpass. There was a sign above it that warned people to watch their head. He considered walking through it, but he was hesitant at first. However, he thought about All Might, that man was fearless. The embodiment of courage. He wouldn't be scared of some dark alleyway.
He embolded himself and made large stomping motions, laughing all the way. Unbeknownst to him, this would be the second time he almost died. Behind him, he felt an ooze creep ever closer. Then, he was enveloped by the slime. Taunting him, suffocating him. He fought but he couldn't breath. He was about to die...
Fortunatly, he cheated death once again. For fate had other plans for the young hanyō. Even if he didn't realize his true nature just yet. He would be the bravest of the brave.
I figured that I'd stop dragging my feet for this rewrite since Astrobot has a Nioh reference and MHA ended, so i figured that this would be a good time to get the first chapter out.
Also yes, this is a fanfic that is what if Nioh and MHA took place in the same universe. I think I came up with a pretty compeling story this time around so I hope you stick with it to find out how this goes.
Feel free to ask any questions.
Thank you for reading
