-"A strange net… Came from me"
When it dawned on Ryuuto, there was only one thing he could do
-"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH!?"
Following that shrieking scream, there was a knock on his door
-"Ryuuto?!" His mother's worried voice came through the door "Is everything ok?!"
-"Um" Ryuuto was sweating, still staring at the strange web that came from his wrist "Y-Yes! Just… Just a video Ishi sent me, it had a jumpscare at the end"
-"Ok, but don´t be watching stuff like that, you just got discharged, focus on resting"
-"I will!"
Once he could no longer hear her mother´s steps, he let out a sigh
-"I know it's wrong to lie, but how do I explain this?!"
Realizing that the web was still on him
-"I need to get rid of this"
He tried to use his free hand, the right one, to see if he could pull it off
But
-"Eh?"
The brochure he had grabbed previously was still on it
-"What the?" he shook his hand to drop the pamphlet
But no matter how many times he tried, it wouldn't come off
Upon closer inspection of it
-"It looks like it is glued to my fingers"
This was getting ridiculous
Frustrated, he put the hand with the brochure on the edge of his desk, and then planted one of his feet on top of it
-"Ngh!" he began to pull, hoping that the added weight would help
And boy it did
With a scratch sound, he freed his hand of the paper
-"Wah!"
He landed on his ass, the sudden pull made him fall
-"Ouch" he rubbed his butt, slightly in pain
He then looked up, and saw that the brochure was no longer on his hand, but rather, on the floor
-"Ok, that's one thing down"
Next on the list was getting rid of the web
Now that he had his hand free, he grabbed the rope that was coming out of his wrist
It took a few pulls, but he was able to tear it off
-"Yes!" he exclaimed internally on glory
Afterwards, he dropped the rope, which gently fell on his floor
-"Phew" he wiped the sweat off his forehead as he took a seat on his bed "Ok, let's analyze things"
He fired some sort of web out of him, and a brochure had been previously glued to his fingers
-"I must be dreaming" he said to no one but himself "That's it! I must still be in the hospital, and this is all a dream!"
To prove this, he pinched one of his cheeks
-"Ouch!" he rubbed his face "Ok, so it´s not a dream"
But it had to be, right?
-"I" hesitantly, he raised both of his hands, and repeated the same move as before with his fingers
And with a quick sound, two ropes of web came out, one from each wrist, and kept on extending until they attached themselves to his window
-"Eek!" panicked, less loudly though
With a gently pull from his wrists, the web was off
"This can't be happening" he said in disbelief
All the vigor and joy he had from successfully confessing to Luna had been washed away and replaced by uncertainty
-"I mean" he grabbed his head "How could something like this even have occurred?"
His exams showed that everything was ok with him
-"No, no, no!" he yelled while waving his arms in a cross over and over "I am still tired, this has to be a dream or something!"
He put on his sleeping clothes
-"I'm sure by the time I wake up, all will be back to normal"
Hard on denying, the young man turned off the lights, and went to sleep
Hoping that tomorrow everything will be fine
Sunday, June the 7th 2020
The familiar sound of his alarm pierced through his ears
-"Wah" Ryuuto let out a yawn as he stretched his arms "I do feel refreshed now"
He turned off his alarm, and got off his bed
And then, his phone got a message
Shirakawa-san: Good morning, Ryuuto! Are you doing ok?
To this, he blushed slightly, his anxiety from last nights events gone some
Ryuuto: Good morning as well, and I am, thank you for asking.
A few moments later, her reply came
Shirakawa-san: That´s great news! I have to help grandmother with a few things today, but do let me know if you are not feeling well. Say hi to your family for me! Bye!
Ryuuto: I will, you take care as well.
Putting his phone away, he realized something
-"The web is gone!"
The ropes he had fired last night were completely gone
-"They must have disintegrated while I was sleeping"
He looked at his wrist, a drop of sweat forming on his forehead
-"No! No! It´s gone now! That's all that matters!"
With his towel on hand, he entered the bathroom
He put his hand on the faucet, and turned it like he always did
And that's when he was met with a stream of water
-"Blagh!" he yelled as the water hit him on the face, soaking it completely "What the?!"
He used one hand to cover the hole where the faucet had been, though the accumulated water was still leaking out through his fingers
-"How?!"
And that's when he looked at his free hand, and realized that the tap he always turns was glued to it
-"Are you kidding me?!"
He looked at the floor, water tainting the carpet and going all the way under the bottom rail of the door
-"Ryuuto, is everything ok?!" his mother asked confused, her slippers wet
The gamer let out a sigh
After a while, the family was gathered up on the table, eating breakfast
Thank goodness their neighbor was a plumber and had been available
-"I´m so sorry for this!" Ryuuto gave a full bow to his family
-"Don´t worry son" his dad said reassuringly "It's just like Tatsumi-san said, the faucet was rusted, it was going to come off sooner of later"
He said that, but Ryuuto knew the true reason
It was due to whatever was happening to him
-"That was not only the sticking, I must have applied more strength than necessary" the young gamer thought, tapping his foot while eating his breakfast "What's wrong with me?"
During the afternoon, Ryuuto volunteered to do the grocery shopping, feeling strong enough to do it on his own
But the truth is, he needed some fresh air. Playing video games did not help and he had already finished his homework
While walking with his gloomy thoughts, he remembered his girlfriend
-"Shirakawa-san"
However, his moment of vigor was cut off
-"Eh?" he stopped walking when he started to feel some strange vibrations on his head
His skin was crawling, like it was telling him to get a move on before something happened
And by mere instinct, he jumped back
-"What?!"
And right where he had been standing before, a flower pot hit the sidewalk, shattering in pieces
-"Huh?" he was confused
-"Hey!" someone yelled
Looking up, he saw a middle-aged woman standing at the window of her apartment
-"Are you ok?! I dropped the pot while cleaning up, thank goodness it didn't hit you or anyone else! I´ll go clean immediately!"
-"Um, I´m ok! Don´t worry!" Ryuuto replied
Once that was sorted out, he kept on walking
-"What was that about?" Ryuuto anxiously thought while walking into the store "I felt some strange vibrations, and next thing I know, I jumped back to avoid that pot from hitting me!... Those vibrations… They felt like a warning, it happened before that pot could harm me, so they have to be some sign of danger"
He was walking down the alleyway, filling up his cart with different items
-"Ok, next on the list is cooking oil"
A couple of feet ahead, he spotted a staff member that was restocking a high shelf with the item he was looking for
-"I´ll wait till she is done"
The staff member put a heavy bottle of the cooking oil on the shelf that was high up
Unfortunately, she did not put it correctly, as it began to bend ahead, like losing its balance
And then, Ryuuto felt the same vibrations as before
-"Huh?"
The bottle of oil began to fell
The worker was down on her knees while checking inside a box, unaware of the falling item that was going to hit her in the back of the neck
-"It's going to hit her"
And it would have, except
Looking up, the staff member´s eyes went wide
-"Woah!" she was surprised
Above her, Ryuuto had his arms extended, having catched the bottle of oil before it could hit her
-"Are you ok?" he asked
-"Yes" she said, somewhat anxious "I didn't realize it fell off. You have quite good reflexes"
-"Y-Yes" Ryuuto was at a loss for words too "I'm glad you´re safe"
-"Thank you, I´ll be more careful from now on, you´re a hero" with a small smile, she left on the opposite
Leaving a bewildered Ryuuto behind
Once he was done with shopping, Ryuuto began the journey back home
-"I can't believe how fast I reacted. She didn't realize the cooking oil was going to fall on her, and I did as soon as I felt those vibrations"
He furrowed "They must be a sign of danger, or rather, when something dangerous is about to happen around me, since the oil was not going to hit me" he let out a sigh "This and the web and the sticking, nothing of it makes any sense!"
He then remembered the words of the staff worker, saying he´s a hero
-"I mean, I'm glad she´s safe, but I wish I knew how all this started"
Once at home, he decided to rest for the remainder of the day
Monday, June the 8th 2020
Ryuuto walked through the door of his school, ready for classes… Minus the weirds things that have been happening to him
-"Kashi!" Yuusuke pulled him by the arm
-"Wah!" he yelped
He was surrounded by Yuusuke and Ren, the former having his hands on his shoulder, and a look that spoke mad curiosity
-"What´s wrong?" Ryuuto asked
-"Don´t "what's wrong" us!" Ren complained "We want to know what happened at Shirakawa-san´s place!"
-"What do you mean by that? You know what happened. I passed out and was taken to the hospital"
-"Not that!" Yuuske whispered, somewhat exasperated "Before that, with Shirakawa-san, did you get somewhere before passing out?"
It took him a few seconds to realize what he meant "No!" his face got pink "Even before passing out, we didn't get to the sex part"
-"Why not?!" the shortie Ren asked "Were her parents there?"
-"No"
-"Did she get defensive?" Yuusuke asked
-"No, I just…" he looked away from them "I just couldn't do it! I was not prepared!"
-"You moron!" the chubby one tightened the grip on his shoulders "That's why I always tell you! Even a gloomy loser like you should carry a condom! It's basic courtesy!"
-"Not that!" the gamer replied, more red than before, and noticing the stares some classmates were giving them "It's just… it was not the right time, and my heart was not ready!"
-"Your heart was not ready?!" Ren repeated the questions as if it was a joke "What are you, a girl?!"
-"That's sexist, you know?" Ryuuto thought "I mean, remember that I´m dating Shirakawa-san now, so a chance for that will show up in the future"
-"You…" Yuusuke was dumbfounded "You really think you are dating Shirakawa-san?"
-"Eh?"
-"Dude, she is at the top of this school's pecking order. It's her thing to play with gloomy loser students like us"
-"Hey!" the gamer was offended "Don´t talk about her like that!"
-"Leave him alone, Ishi" Ren said, putting a hand on the chubby´s shoulder "Let the man live in fantasy world a little longer"
-"Gee, thanks" Ryuuto felt more insulted
-"You're right Nishi" Yuusuke let go of him "To each their own" and they both walked away
-"You" he was outraged, stomping his foot "IT WAS YOU WHO MADE ME CONFESS IN THE FIRST PLACE!"
He let out a frustrated sigh, no use to get mad about that now
Not when he had something bigger going on
Friday, June the 12th 2020
During the next couple of days, Luna would always approach Ryuuto, whether to talk to him or to hug his arm, no matter who was present
And while he was happy about it, there was also the shy part on him that was worried about the looks some other students would give them
Particularly, from another gyaru who kept throwing daggers at him with one look
Which is why, during recess
-"Um, Shirakawa-san" he said, scratching his head, a hint of red on his cheeks "You haven't told anyone that we are dating, right?"
To this, the blonde beauty gave him a look that said "Why are you asking me that?"
-"I have already told my best friend, Nicole, why do you ask? Have you not told your friends?"
-"Well, 2 of them to be precise"
-"See?" she replied cheerfully
-"But" he gulped "When I talk to you, we stand out a lot"
Taking the hint, Luna spoke quietly "Does that mean we shouldn't talk too much at school and keep our relationship a secret?"
-"Y-Yes" he said meekly "I would appreciate that"
It might have been rude to ask her that, but until he can overcome his shyness
Reluctantly, she agreed, pouting a bit "Very well, but, when can I talk to you then?"
-"Eh?"
That was unexpected
-"Well, how about on the weekends?" he suggested, though he could feel someone inside his head telling him he was 100 years early to ask her that
-"You mean like a date?"
-"W-Well… Yes"
-"Ok" she said, a smile shining like the sun "I already have plans on sunday, so how about saturday?"
-"Sure"
The bell rang, it was time to return to class
-"Wait!" it hit him "Isn't tomorrow saturday?!"
Saturday, June the 13th 2020
-"Wow!" Luna gasped at the beautiful clothes that were on display "Isn't it lovely?!"
To this, Ryuuto replied as best as he could
They were exploring the department store for clothes on a building across Shinjuku´s station as they had previously agreed on the phone
Though the gamer's mind was on fire, and not only because of the fact she was on a date with a bombshell of a girl that was his girlfriend
-"I still don't have a single clue about how I got this powers!"
He went with powers, because, what else could they be called? And every morning he would woke up wishing they were gone, only to have his dreams crushed
-"Should I tell Shirakawa-san about them?"
He hasn´t told anyone, not even his family, since he wants to understand them a little more, plus, he could already imagine some reactions from them
-"My mom would either cry or have a heart attack! How often does your son end up with the ability to shoot webs?!"
Thank goodness he has not have any more incidents at least
A couple of hours later, they had decided to get a drink at a nearby cafe to rest a little bit
-"Say, Ryuuto" Luna said, her voice low compared to how it was at the stores
-"Yes?"
-"Are you ok?" she bit her lips "Having a date like this, isn't it boring?"
-"That's not true" he genuinely felt like that
However, the gyaru frowned "Lier, I mean, you haven't looked at any of the items at the stores, right?"
-"Well" she got him there "No, I mean… It's not boring because I was… looking at Shirakawa-san" that last part was said timidly
-"Eh?" she was surprised "What does that mean?"
He was not expecting for her to dig up more, but he should be honest with her
-"Well, I… pay attention to the kind of clothes you like, or, how pretty you look when you are happy" he facepalmed "Sorry, I sound like a total creep, right?"
To this, she shook her head "Not at all, I mean… You like seeing me shopping?"
He gave her a nod "When I see you having fun, in a way… I also start having fun"
She went mute
-"Oh no!" he panicked "Did I say something wrong?"
No
Because her cheeks went red at the comment
-"W-What was that?" she meekly said, putting some hair behind her ear "It was a little embarrassing"
-"So cute!" he thought, heart beating fast
-"After all Ryuuto, it turns out you are different"
She said that with a smile so innocent that resembled that of a child
Ryuuto was speechless, face burning
Suddenly, her phone rang
-"It's Nicole, one moment Ryuuto"
While she was talking to her best friend, Ryuuto made a vow
To try to be more confident on himself, for both his and his girlfriend´s sake
He can't let that rejection hunt him forever
-"If only I have a clue about this powers though"
Monday, June the 15th 2020
Another week of classes began
Ryuuto was walking down the sidewalk that led to his school, with a new case for his smartphone, a gift from Luna
A gift from his girlfriend
-"I feel so happy I could fly" he shook his head "No! No! I have enough with the webs and the like, thank you very much!"
His train of thought was cut off when he heard a sound, like something hitting the floor
Looking ahead, he spotted a pick up truck ahead with some boxes scattered around it, and a man cursing his luck
-"That's the school's janitor" he jogged towards where he was "Morning, Sayaka-san"
-"Ah!" the janitor noticed him, and greeted him with a smile "Morning kid!"
-"Do you need a hand picking up these?"
-"Yeah, I would appreciate that, thank you"
The duo began to pick up the boxes
-"How is work doing?" Ryuuto said, striking a conversation, at least for politeness´ sake
-"It's going well, but" the janitor´s face contorted, like he was remembering something disgusting
-"What´s wrong?"
-"Well, the other day, friday the 5th I think, I was cleaning the parking lot behind the building after classes were over, when I spotted a gross spider"
-"A spider?" Ryuuto repeated, feeling… weird
-"Yeah, thank goodness it was already dead when I found it, would have hated to have to crushed it"
-"Y-Yeah" for some reason, his palms were getting sweaty "That's the day when I confessed to Shirakawa-san"
-"Still, I pity anyone unlucky enough to be bitten by one"
As soon as he finished saying that, something beat inside Ryuuto
-"Bite"
A spider the janitor found
On the same day he confessed to Luna
And on that particular day, he remembered feeling
-"Anyway" the janitor cleaned some sweat off his face once they were done "Thanks for the help kid, take care"
-"Y-Yeah" the gamer replied, not even looking at him
Because his mind was rushing
Once the adult left, Ryuuto began to sprint towards school
Inside the building, he went straight to the bathroom, and washed his face with some water
-"A spider" he said in between breaths
The confession from that day began to flash through his eyes
One moment specifically
When he felt a quite painful pinch in his right leg
-"Ow!" he yelped, lifting his leg, and jumping in place
-"Are you ok?!" Luna asked, head tilted and worried
-"Y-Yeah"
Lifting the hem of his pants, he found a red mark on his right ankle
-"I guess a mosquito must have bitten me"
Back on the present
-"It was not a mosquito… It was a spider! A spider was what bit me!"
Right after said bite, it was when he passed out at Luna´s house
-"It must have been because of the bite, and… The powers" his eyes went wide in fear as he finally connected the dots "It was the spider's bite that gave me those powers!"
He had finally solved the puzzle
-"It makes sense! The web, the things sticking to my hands!"
Like spiders do
-"But" he grabbed his head with a wet hand "How!? How does a spider that grants powers to someone through a bite even exist?!"
No matter how much he analyzed, he couldn't figure out an answer
-"It must have been created by someone, but who?! And why?!"
He claused the faucet "I should have done the connection sooner" he let out a sigh "Well, at least that's one mystery solved"
But his anxiety had skyrocketed
-"I… I need to do further testing"
Once classes were done with, he left in a hurry
A couple of blocks away from his school, there was an abandoned industrial warehouse that students, particularly more of the delinquent type, had used as a meeting spot from time to time
The complaints from neighbors about dangerous students, as well as gang members and thieves using it to meet up for their shady business led to a cleaning operation, leaving it as a deserted place
Normally, Ryuuto wouldn't even consider going to a place as grim as that one, but it was the only location where he could further test his new abilities without anyone bothering him
-"Thank goodness the fence was damaged"
He stood in the middle of what it used to be some sort of unloading area
There were traces of boxes from all sizes, as well as tools and car parts
-"Ok, first thing first the web"
Spotting a nearby can of paint, he fired a web rope at it, attaching
-"Ok, now" he yanked from the rope, making the can fly towards where he was, grabbing it with his hand
-"Figured as much! Seems this web is far stronger than I thought"
He felt somewhat excited
He repeated this process a number of times
-"This is quite cool actually!"
He then looked at the abandoned building, and then at his hands
-"If I have spider-like skills, then maybe"
Standing next to the building, he took a deep breath
-"Here goes"
He placed his fingers on the wall, followed by the tip of the feet
-"I'm not falling!" he was astonished "I am glued to the wall!"
He then started to climb up the wall, changing from one hand and foot to the other
With each step he took, his vigor kept on increasing
-"This… This is amazing!"
Eventually, he made it to the roof
Once he climbed over it, he sit on the edge of it
-"Wow!" he looked down, amazed rather than scared "I know it's not the tallest building in town, but I actually climbed it, with no need of special equipment!"
Taking in his surrounding, he spotted a tower crane standing high and above him
-"Maybe" aiming at the crane, he fired again
The web rope extended way more than ever before
-"I can´t believe it goes this far!" Ryuuto´s eyes went wide "And its not breaking apart at all!"
Even when gently yanking from it, the web remained intact
-"Granted, I bet it would be a different story if I actually were to try to pull harder and with more strength, I don´t think it would be able to remain still for a long period when trying to pull something that heavy"
But that didn´t matter
-"I…" taking in the gentle breeze alongside the rays of sun setting on the horizon "I feel like the king of the world!"
And why shouldn't he? He now had skills no regular person had
-"I can be more confident from now on!" he raised fist to his chest "This is so cool!"
Deciding that it was enough for today, he got down
As he was leaving through the same fence hole he had entered from, he failed to notice a police car that was coming on the opposite direction
-"What is that kid doing?"
As he was running back home, Ryuuto had a smile that went from ear to ear
Unaware that reality was going to hit him… Where it hurts the most
And that´s the end of that, Ryuuto was nervous at first, but it seems he´s finding his new powers to be more great than he thought, although he should be dangerous where he uses them
Next time, Ryuuto will have the event, and I think you all know what I mean by this
