Fishing out of luck

]|P|[

Professor Oak looked at the screen at Slate as his protege just finished going over his latest gym battle. "So you lost huh. Well it happens to the best of us, the only thing that matters if this is where your journey ends." Professor Oak said knowing that despite trainers dreams for greatness many fall flat sometimes due to findng there true calling or getting one to many loses.

"Pfth are you crazy Prof I'm in it to win it, no sir I'm not giving up not as long as Lance wears the Kanto crown rather then me. No matter how many times I get knocked down i'll keep getting back up." a determined smile covered Slate's face this defeat was only a minor set back he'll get stronger then sweep Surge's team just like he said.

Seeing the honesty in his sponsee's face brought a smile to Oak's. "Great to hear and if it makes you feel better your technically in second place. Gary is five badges in both you and Ash have two and Amber has one."

"FIVE! HOW!?" Slate shouted how did that over privileged piece of Tauros dung get over twice the amount of badges has him this fast even though he left before him. "I couldn't have gotten lost that bad right."

"Hehehe well you see there was this bet I made with Gary and long story short he got a gather hefty prize that he used to buy a car." The Pokemon Professor Mareepishly rubbed the back of his head. "And you know Gary always has to be the best."

Rubbing the bridge of his nose Slate looked at his mentor. "What was the bet?"
"Oh who knows ...hey how is Scyther?" Oak asked hoping to draw focus away from his dumb bet.

It seemed to work as Slate rubbed his chin in thought. "Better actually he can't use some of his TM moves but he no longer attacks on sight, so it's progress."

"And are you planning on using Scyther in your rematch?"

"Nope promised Surge a rematch with the same team, gonna sweep all three of them with mine."
"Great so how about sending him over I'll feel better about his state if I'm the one checking over him. No offense." He added the last part in quickly. "It's cool let me just run it by him so he doesn't freak out and attack when it happens. It'll probably take a few minutes."

"Prefect I'll waiting here for when it happens. For a piece of advice my I recommend fishing this being a port town and all. It's also pretty relaxing I can't forget the amount of problems I've solved just with a little time away." As the two were about to hang up Oak asked a question thats been on his mind for a while. "Uh Slate who is that?" Following his pointing finger Slate raises a brow at Giselle pacing back and forth around the pokemon center.
"How could I lose that easily have you met me, I'm me! I've got the 3B's going for me, beauty, brain and a body hotter then the flames of a Magcargo."

"It's a long story."

"But if you think about it that was a gym leader they are highly trained to be able to battle reguardless of the type advantage."

"Consider it a learning experience." Slate said as he sat at a dock fishing. It had been a good few days since Giselle's battle and things hadn't been eventful as Slate trained his team for his rematch as the ex-student went between training and going through the five stages of grief- she was just getting to acceptance. "Everyone loses its only a loss if you don't learn anything from it." It couldn't have come sooner as Slate was this close to the throwing her in the harbor.

Giselle's brow shot into her hairline at the comment. "Wow! I mean wow that actually sounded like real wisdom."

"I have my moments, time on the road does that." Slate said with a shrug. At that moment the line on Slate's pole began to moving. "Oh I got a bite! Hope it's not another Goldeen!" He began turning the handle pulling the spool in the opposite direction. "Almost..." a turn here, a jerk there and grunt every which way. After what felt like hours more like minutes Slate jumped with the pull as something pink emerged out of the water.

Hanging on the line was a pink pokemon with curled ears, and a rounded, tan muzzle. It has four legs, each of which ends in a single white claw. Its long, tapering tail has a white tip. The thing that stuck out the most was the vacant eyes that don't seem at all focused.

"Slowpoke?" the pokemon said more confused then anything.

"Wow the Dopey Pokemon nice catch." Even this Slowpoke would have a hard time missing the sarcasm on that one.

Slate didn't respond merely taking the hook out of Slowpoke's mouth with the Water/Psychic type sitting in his arms like a new born baby pokemon. "I'm just gonna cut to the chase how would like to join my team?"

"...Slowpoke?" he responded after a few minutes as it opened and closed it's mouth.

"Is that a yes or no?"

"...Slowpoke?"

Withdrewing a pokeball. "I'll take that as a yes." he tapped the ball on his head. It took only a moment before the the duel type pokemon was absorbed in a red light into the pokemon. CLICK.

"Well that was easy." Slate said as he pulled out his pokedex. "How!? What has he been doing to get to this level? Who is he training to fight?!" Giselle asked as she looked over his shoulder eyeing the pokemons stats.

These thoughts were cut off as a voice errupted behind them.

"HEY! Are you Slate from Pallet Town?"

Turning around the two see a teen around their age wearing a yellow t-shirt, blue jeans with a blue headband.

"Y-Yes." Slate said hesitantly wondering what this was about.

"Perfect I've been scouring the region for days searching for you!" he said withdrawing a pokeball. "It's time to fix what is broken."

"Arceus, Slate what did you do to him?" Giselle knew Slate was kind of an ass but what could he have done to make someone seek revenge.

Slate just shoulder shrugged. He really didn't know though the guys outfit rang a bell in the back of his mind.

"You bastard it's time I avenge my brother." the youth said pointing at Slate.

"Was it ahh...Jimmy?" Slate said taking a guess based on all of his past battles.

"No! My brother's defeat by you his greatest rival it devastated him so much he came running home in tears. Now it is time make things right!"

"Aaron?"

"No! It is time to settle the score."
"Ruth?"

"Face the wrath of me Teenster Joseph the older brother of Youngster Joey!"
"Teenster?"

"SNAP! Oh right that kid how's he doing?" Slate completely forgot about that kid glad he at least made it home to his family.

"He's life is in shambles, he keeps crying, his bed wetting has returned and can't train."

"Accepting loss is crucial for a trainer it is more important then being humble with victory." Slate deadpanned over to Giselle the ex-student turned away with a pout.

The Teenster only growled at the matter of fact tone. "Let's battle! Let it be known that this day I'll avenge my brother and my families honor!"

"Why? Do you also have a "top percentage Rattata" to?" Giselle didn't snicker no sir and anyone who says other wise is a dirty liar.

"Oh please I'm hundred times stronger then my brother. Go Raticate!"

Out popped the evolved form of Rattata primarily tawny-colored with a cream underside, it has narrow black eyes, ears with ragged edges and dark insides, and large incisors. There are three whiskers on each side of its face it has short arms with three-fingered hands and webbed feet with three toes.

"Ha you like that, me and my Raticate have been partners for a while so this will be a landslide."

"I!"

"Huh?"

"Raticate and I." Giselle finding the poor grammer more of an annoyance then anything private school for life.
"Whatever release your pokemon and let's battle I'll defeat you and avenge my brother."

Before the Teenster could continue ranting Slate interupted. "Okay this might actually be a challenge." Withdrawing a pokeball throwing it out. "Throwdown Nidorina!" The Poison/Ground type stood at the ready.

Joseph smirked ready to destory the one who caused his brother so much pain. "Hehehe let's end this with one strike partner. Use Tackle!"

"Again!?" Both Slate and Nidorina thought in surprise at the similiar tactic.

Just as ordered the large brown rat charged forward hoping to run into it's opponet with the most basic of attacks. "Uh Iron Tail?" Slate more asked then ordered. There had to be something more then this maybe a combo or an attack that requires it to take damage.

Without missing a beat Nidorina's tail began to glow as she jumped out of the way of the charging attack spinning in the air smacking the fully evolved Mouse Pokémon in the side sending it a few feet through the air before landing with a hard thud.

All three trainers stared at the sight before them all with different expressions of shock. Slate more annoyed then anything as the battle lasted only 10 seconds feeling this couldn't have been all that considering it was a quest for vengence. Giselle with a look of shock wondering if Slate had gotten that much stronger then she thought or this guy was a weak idiot. It was moments like this truly cemented her belief that school still had some importance to the world to all budding trainers. Maybe with a few lessons this idiot would know when he was clearly outmatched. Where as Teenster Joseph looked like his entire world came crashing down, how how could he have lost how will he avenge his brother now.

Tears started to flow down the Teenster's face as he pointed an accusing at Slate. "Y-You got lucky this time but the next battle I'll...I'll." he couldn't finish the threat before returning his starter running away.

Slate watched dust cloud get further and further away disappoint radiating of him. "You know I thought he'd be stronger." with a roll of the eyes only to yelp as his mid-evolvution jumped took him to the ground getting her victory snuggles.

Author's Notes

The next chapter is the rematch just wanted to get some depth in, a pokemon caught, and a battle (didn't add the training cause it would have been repetitive).
