Chapter 4

As the discussions continued, the room buzzed with ideas and strategies. Jason's mind worked tirelessly, assessing the information presented and formulating a plan that would give them the best chance against the impending threat. Elizabeth's presence and insights added a dimension that hadn't been present in previous war councils and was much appreciated.

Tempers had already been lost several times as the various families disagreed on how to stop the enemy.

Liz cleared her throat, and the attention was on her. "Sonny has already spilled our normal strategy and we know they have taken armor from the dead, and he'll help them make more." In the past, they didn't bother with that sort of thing. If anything, they used armor to intimidate, but since changing their methods, many have survived that wouldn't have before.

"Aside from slitting his throat, what do you purpose?" Anthony asked.

"I don't pretend to be an expert in battle, but given the lay of the land, I think we need to surround them and use the hillsides to our advantage."

"If you don't have enough men in front, we're doomed. Surrounding will spread us too thin," Luke said. Every kingdom represented in the room is sending some troops.

"I disagree," Jason said. "They won't anticipate us surrounding them. Confusion on their part will help us win. Containing them using the mountains, men, and a few tricks could buy us time to slaughter as many of their men as we can."

"It could also add fuel to the fire," Robert said.

"I plan on raining a lot of fire on their heads," Jason said. "We must use our strengths." He eyed Elizabeth. "How many catapults do you have?"

"Five. We can move some onto the hillsides."

"I may be able to make that work. You said you trained everyone. In what way?"

"Most of the women are experts with a bow. Older children are well-taught in making arrows, and we have a stockpile. We had contests and the best spear throwers were singled out and practiced daily. Others are trained on doling out supplies and water; some know how to fix just about anything." With age comes wisdom, and the seniors shared knowledge and were eager to help in any way.

Jason nodded. "We'll have to use everyone we can."

"I have barrels of oil we can use to set fires and have access to tar."

Helena smiled. Elizabeth had studied. They have found that using the catapult to fling hot tar, makes it easier to start fires.

"Is there a moat around the castle?" Alan asked.

"Yes, and the water is poisoned, so coming in contact with it will result in immense pain."

Helena chuckled knowing that Liz had gotten that idea from her. While the enemy is writhing in pain, it is easier to do away with them.

The din in the room rose as many called out ideas.

When Stefan moved forward, everyone quieted. "We have made an advancement in armor to make it lighter and easier to maneuver in. No one has anything like it."

Alan's brow quirked. "I suppose you want something in return?"

Stefan smirked. "Carriages will be here by the light of dawn. I'm sure compensation for hard work will be offered. One of my men will accompany Elizabeth and teach them how to make more. I gave what I could spare. Make sure the front line and those in charge wear them."

"We shall discuss compensation after the meeting," Alan said dryly.

"Thank you," Elizabeth said to Stefan who nodded.

"I would like to see a demonstration," Jason said. Anything that can give them an advantage is most appreciated. The Cassadines are known for their cunning and brutality, so he's glad to be on their side.

Stefan nodded again before retreating.

For the next few hours strategy was discussed. Jason's head is swimming. Some are good ideas and others are not. Until he sees the lay of the land, final decisions won't be made. However, he has a good idea of what they need to do, and it pleases him that they have a good chance of defeating Sonny and the barbarians.

When the discussions reached a temporary pause, Jason turned to Elizabeth. "You've done well. The information about the poisoned water and the knowledge of your resources will be crucial."

She nodded appreciatively, a glimmer of determination in her eyes. "We must use every advantage we have. This is not just about survival; it's about protecting our people and reclaiming our land."

Jason observed the room, gauging the reactions of the leaders. The tension between them had subsided, replaced by a shared commitment to the impending battle.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows in the room, Alan signaled the end of the meeting. "Prepare your forces. Soon, we will face our enemy. May our alliances be strong and may victory be ours."

The room emptied, leaving only a few lingering figures. Jason, Elizabeth, and Johnny gathered in a quiet corner to finalize their plans for the coming day. A stormy path lay ahead, but with each strategic decision and alliance forged, they inched closer to a chance at victory. The air was thick with anticipation, a silent acknowledgment of the challenges and possibilities that awaited them.

Sonny collapsed on his back as he panted.

Sam grinned. She had learned early on how men think and how easily they can be persuaded. Hopefully, after they defeat their enemy and gain new land, her father will consider Sonny to be his successor. Her brother is an imbecile and a great disappointment. Unfortunately, a woman can't rule, so Sonny would be the best choice.

"You are fantastic," he said as he tried to control his breathing.

"You inspire me."

He grinned.

"Do you think we will win?"

"I'm sure of it. Elizabeth is not experienced."

"True, but the others will help them."

"It won't matter. We have more men, and I received some intel and know when they'll be at their weakest."

"When is that?"

"Soon. In a tri-week, King Alan is going to invade the far north. They will start their quest soon. Since Jason will not be available to help, resistance will be minimal."

"That sounds promising."

"I heard a rumor that Alan was set to marry her off to AJ."

Sonny nodded. "If that is true, then Alan is paving the way so Jason will take over for him. AJ is a spineless wimp. It would be a smart move."

"Well, after we burn Elizabeth's precious town to the ground, maybe Jason should be next."

Sonny grinned. "I would like nothing more than to see him fall by my knife. One thing I won't do is underestimate him though."

"You are far smarter."

"I agree." He smiled as he rolled onto his side.

When she felt his erection poke her in the leg, she chuckled. "Again?"

"Again."

The plan was set, and the next few days would be crucial in preparing for the impending battle. As Elizabeth, Jason, and Alan discussed the details of the ruse, a sense of camaraderie continued to emerge. The unorthodox nature of their strategy added an element of unpredictability that could work in their favor.

"I changed the plan slightly. Information was leaked that Elizabeth is marrying AJ," Alan said.

Liz frowned. "Why?"

"It would seem as though I'm opening the door for Jason to succeed me. Sonny is cocky. It will throw them off. Also, we are having some troops march to the north so word will get back to him that Jason will be off to war."

Jason agrees with the strategy. Sonny is arrogant and will assume that he has the advantage.

"Johnny and Jason will pretend to take part and then cut East beyond the forest before heading to Guildenhall. The other men will help in battle and training. The rest will make their way back under nightfall."

Elizabeth squeezed her hands together. "Should we hide the wedding and only have a few staff know?"

"I go to and fro on that, but in the end, it might be impossible to stop the rumors."

"Perhaps we should wait a little longer," Jason said.

"Weeks?"

"Yes. I believe he will strike in a tri-week. It makes sense if he thinks I'm going off to war."

"So, we put it off until the week before?" Liz asked.

Jason nodded. "Perhaps even the night or two before." The visiting families would have to leave right after the ceremony for their protection.

"All right. We will not make a formal announcement." It's unheard of, but considering the circumstances, it's for the best. "Let people wag their tongues and think AJ is the groom. We can have it outside so all can bear witness."

"That's a grand idea," Liz said. She doesn't want to lie to her people, so not making an announcement is the preferred course. Since they will think the wedding is with AJ, they will have time to prepare.

"Once they are married, we will crown Jason the King, and then celebrate the joining of our families."

"I'll get started as soon as we return. There is so much to do."

Alan smiled. "I'm sure you will handle it all gracefully. Welcome to our family, Elizabeth."

"I'll look forward to it because family is something that I miss."

"We can't take their place but would be honored to be there if you need us."

Jason eyed Elizabeth who is moved by the sentiment.

"Thank you."

"Now, AJ will accompany you on your journey. I suppose you'll want to ride?"

Elizabeth fought a smile but nodded.

When Alan sighed and shook his head, she gave into her mirth as an amused Jason observed.

"Sorry," Elizabeth said trying to temper her laughter. It was such a dad thing to do.

Alan chuckled. "Emily gives my head a spin daily with her independence and mocking, so I should be used to it."

Elizabeth grinned. "Maybe Emily should accompany me as well."

Jason coughed as he tried not to laugh, but Alan gave up.

"She would never ride that far. I'll ask, but a carriage would probably be more appropriate."

"Why did you laugh?"

Jason cleared his throat. "The last time she climbed atop a horse, it threw her off into a large puddle. It was very funny."

Elizabeth chuckled. "Maybe I can give her some lessons."

"There isn't enough patience in the world for that, but if you insist, I wouldn't go against it."

"I never back down from a challenge."

Jason made a mental note to remember that.

Emily ran up to Elizabeth. "Thanks for convincing my father to let me come with you."

Liz smiled. "I thought it would give us time to bond."

"I have lots of stories too."

Liz cracked up due to Emily's mischievous grin. "I will look forward to it."

"Are you sure you want to ride the horse?"

"I am, but if I get tired, I will join you."

"It's your funeral," Emily said before getting inside.

Johnny stood by while Liz mounted the horse.

"I shall see you soon."

"Aye," Johnny said with a smile.

AJ strode forward and got himself settled. He would prefer the carriage, but since there are probably spies along the way, it will help the rumors to spread.

Jason swung onto his horse and then eyed Liz and nodded. She returned the sentiment and then watched him ride away.

Their caravan moved forward.

"Prince AJ, tell me, are you promised to anyone?"

He smirked. "Why? Are you having second thoughts?"

Liz rolled her eyes. "No."

"I have my eye on someone."

Liz gazed at him. "Are you going to tell me who?"

"I don't know if I trust you yet."

"Do I know her?"

"You do."

Liz pretended to think for a moment. Georgie had heard all sorts of gossip while she made friends in the castle. "If I guess the first initial, will you tell me why you have such a chip on your shoulder?"

AJ blew out a big breath. "Well, I am a gambling man. Go for it."

Liz smiled. "I."

AJ did a double take and then his eyes narrowed. "Why do I feel as though I have just been played?"

She laughed. "Am I right?"

"You know you are."

"That would be kind of dangerous alliance."

"Aye, but exciting."

Liz shook her head. Irina Cassadine is fiery and beautiful. King Allen would probably have a heart attack if he knew. "I could only imagine. Now, spill."

They hung back a little and the guards behind them slightly moved back.

"You would say it's jealousy."

"I would understand that. Me and my sister had our differences at times. I always thought she was gorgeous, and my parents loved her more."

"I think you may have been wrong."

"How would you know that?"

"Sarah was beautiful, but that's not everything. I remember how your father seemed to adore you. You are beautiful, Queen Elizabeth, but you also have more depth. A relationship based on looks is doomed to fail."

"I'm surprised by your candor."

"I know everyone views me as a screwup and I understand why. I burned through their trust. Maybe it's just that I push myself to try and be as admired as my brother, which has me trying to right wrongs. I won't lie. Beauty is what first attracted me to Irina, but then after that, I realized she is so much more."

"Why don't you tell her?"

He chuckled. "I think she knows."

"Well then, we'll have to plot and make sure you get to spend some time with her at the festivities."

He smiled. "Thank you. I will take the help."

"You don't seem to be shy."

"It's complicated with her because of her last name."

"Helena is tough. You'll have to prove your worth. If you are serious and want to change your lot, I will help you any way I can."

"Why?"

"I understand that Jason's persona overpowers yours. That is tough to deal with, but in his defense, the little I know of him seems to suggest that he's oblivious to the praise and just wants to do what he needs to do to protect the kingdom."

"It's that nobility that always made my bile rise."

She grinned. "I've learned a lot from my father. He believes that no individual means more within a team. If you surround yourself with good people, and they are willing to leave ego at the door and come together, you can accomplish anything."

"That is sage advice."

They rode in silence for several minutes.

"Do you want to be King?"

"Yes and no."

"Explain…"

He sighed. "Well, it would make me feel more powerful and in control, but in the end, I can feel all I want, but if I'm not respected, it's all for naught."

"True."

"It will put a lot of pressure on me and I'm trying not to doubt myself, but when I fail, I tend to retreat into a barrel of beer or other refreshments."

"I learned to focus on one thing at a time. Several smaller wins lead to bigger ones. I keep people around me who will tell me the truth even if it makes me wrong. There is power in loyalty. Start developing relationships with people that can make you look good and help you learn and instill that respect. And when you feel overwhelmed, laughter is better than alcohol. The effects last longer and there is no slouching the morning after."

He chuckled. "Good point. Do you like being a Queen?"
