Now, I'm not gonna write too much more here, but I do hope y'all end up enjoying this re-write as much as the original.

They found it. The perfect place to call their own. It had taken a bit to find it while dodging hordes of the dead and even groups of survivors. The three didn't approach them for a few reasons. One, they didn't have a stable place yet to start adding people to their group. Two, Luna shook her head when Neville, who was the more social of the two boys, wanted to approach them. And lastly, the last two groups of people they had come across had masks made of human skin and made Harry's magic crawl in disgust.
Needless to say, the three steered clear of the last couple of groups.
The place they found was a resort. Large flat lands, a beach that had fish, fertile lands if all the greenery was any indication. There were homes that were already built and silencing runes etched into each room would give anyone enough privacy to feel comfortable. Neville was optimistic in being able to convert one of the buildings into a greenhouse or two for plants that needed specifications for their growth. There was enough land that they could fence off areas for different animals and still have plenty of room for anyone that wanted to join them.
"So we're calling this home?" Harry asked as the three stepped into one of the larger buildings in the area. It was wide open and looked perfect to make the main hub for their sanctuary. The ceilings were high and the windows let in a lot of natural lighting.
"Seems good to me," Neville said as Torben waddled further inside. The bear, in the few weeks since he had been found, had grown quickly already thigh high on Harry who was easily a foot shorter than Neville. Artemis on the other hand decided to sit at Luna's feet instead of exploring while Aragorn, after he had hunted and was still digesting his food, settled half in Harry's backpack and half wrapped around the small teen.
"Let's secure the building, ward it, and get to planning then," Harry said as he tugged his knife out of the sheath that was strapped to his thigh. He had found that he was able to hit a Walker quicker with a knife than with his wand when in close distance, and it was a lot quieter too. The three split off from each other and one by one as they finished with their sections they joined back up in the room they first entered.
Harry got to work repairing broken windows with a simple Reparo while Neville took care of the dust and Luna started with using her knife to carefully carve runes into wood to secure the entryways and a general repellent to those who wished to do harm. Harry looked behind the desk for any sort of pamphlet that would have a map and came away with a more detailed map than he thought he would find. It was large and didn't look like a map he hadn't seen before with all the lines running across the paper. Large letters at the top of the paper told him where they were.
"This place is called Callaway Resort and Gardens," Harry said as he placed the map on a newly clearly off table, "Do we want to keep the name or pick something else?"
"Why not something new? We're in a new world now, no need to cling to the old one," Neville replied with a sad smile on his face at the thought, but it was true. There was no need to cling to the old world.
"I think we should call it Griffin's Keep," Luna said, "You know, the half-lion and half-eagle creature? We're two lions and an eagle settling here and calling it home. A homage to who we are as the founders of the sanctuary."
"Griffin's Keep it is," Harry said with a nod.
"Here?" Harry asked Luna as he stopped by a large decorative rock around the area they had wanted to put the first ring of wards. They had decided that since the area they wanted to ward off was so large that they would start with a small radius to lay a runic circle ward before adding another ring further out. It would also help from depleting their cores like Harry had done when he apparated the three of them across the ocean. So it had taken them at least a few days to get all the runes laid out and powered up with this one being the last rune they needed.
"Yes!" Luna replied as she stepped up to the rock, her rune engraved silver knife clutched in her hand. Harry turned to keep an eye out for any walkers around them as Luna carefully carved into the rock. The two boys decided to let Luna do all the carving while they were the ones to power up the runes and hold the connections until the natural magic around them attached itself to the runes. It took several minutes to even an hour for the connection to take hold and while Luna was strong in her own regard, the boys still had larger reserves than she did.
"It's ready!" Luna proclaimed as she carefully stepped down, "My turn to watch."
Harry nodded and stepped up to the rock. He regretted not taking Ancient Runes as a class as the runes he had been exposed to for the past few days fascinated him. When he learned that other magicals couldn't sense them either made his regret worse as he could have used them during the summer with the Dursley's as the runes didn't need a wand to power it up. Shaking those thoughts out of his head, as he never needed to think about them ever again, he placed his palm over the rune. The rock was warm to the touch, but not unpleasantly so.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he slowly let his magic enter the rune. It felt as though it didn't take long for the natural magics of the world to take hold, but when he pulled away from the rune Harry could feel the toll. His legs ached as well as his lower back, his shoulder stung from staying in the same position and his core was noticeably drained.
"That was the last one, right?" Harry asked, slightly panting, and wiped the sweat from his brow.
"Yes," Luna said with a nod, "Our little circle is complete and fully warded! Now no dead should be able to get through and other survivors that aren't tied to the wards shouldn't be able to get in. They'll just walk around the ward or even just stay clear of the area unless one of us brings them in."
"Fantastic! Should we head back to the main house?" Harry asked as he stretched his back to the point it let out a soft pop. Luna nodded and turned on her heel to lead the way back. In their small circle was, of course, the building they first entered, a few other large buildings, and a wide open field that had a variety of flowers popping up. It didn't take long for the three to make it back to the building and when they did get back Neville was looking over a map on the main table.
"I found exactly where we are," Neville said after he greeted the two, "We're somewhere called Pine Mountain, Georgia. We're about 125 kilometers (77 miles) from the closest major city in the state, Atlanta."
"Is it a feasible distance to walk?" Harry asked as he took a seat to rest his legs and back, "or would it be better to apparate?"
"If you want to," Neville said with a shrug, "It could take a few days of walking depending on road conditions, the dead, and other survivors should you run into them. Then if we take a few days there to gather things, and it takes a few days to get back, we're looking at a trip that could take two weeks."
"What if I went by myself?" Harry asked, "You and Luna could start working on the Keep while I'm out getting supplies? I could go in a few days after we empty the bags and catalogue what we have so we know what we need."
"I've already started working on a Master List, like the one from the Hogwart's library," Luna piped up as she went through her bag to take out a leather bound notebook that had a few carved runes along the spine, "I should have it up and ready to use by the morning. Once it's done I can chain the runes on it to a few trunks or even a room that has it's own runes."
"Is it self updating?" Harry asked and smiled when Luna nodded.
"Alright," Neville said with a sigh, "Give me tonight to double check some co-ordinates and once we've emptied the bags you can apparate. It would be quicker, but louder, so you'll have to leave the area you pop into quickly. It's a major city to I'd prepare to face a lot of the dead."
"I'll take the next few days to prepare then," Harry said as he gave the two a nod before getting up from the table, leaving his bag at the feet of the chair he had sat in, "For now I think I'll look around the other buildings and see what's there."
"Okay! Let me know if you think any of them could serve as a greenhouse?" Neville asked, a hopeful look to his eyes at a chance to maybe start a garden again. Harry chuckled and nodded before leaving the two soulmates to do whatever they were going to do. Once he was alone outside, the sun still shining brightly in the sky, he took a deep breath. He briefly wondered where their companions were as he walked down the concrete path that led to the other buildings in their circle. He knew Aragorn had wanted to hunt and had left the snake to his own devices, but he didn't see Torben with Neville or Artemis. The two were probably hunting as well, but Torben at least was still a cub and wouldn't have wandered too far.
The first building he came across was still in good shape surprisingly. The windows, like most buildings they came across, were broken although the glass that should have been on the ground was missing, but at least the walls and the doors were still in good shape. As he walked in and started to wander around, Harry came to the conclusion that this building was a gift shop of sort, which made since once he found merchandise in the back room. Going back towards the front of the store he went around the counter to see if there was anything behind it only to find a pamphlet with a map of the entire resort. A different one to the road map that they had that only had the name of the place on it.
"This place is fucking huge," Harry murmured to himself as he unfolded the map on the dust counter. He quickly found where he was and took a look around the area he was in. It didn't look like there was much, in terms of buildings around, but at least there was plenty of space to build once they were able to or had found someone that had the knowledge to lead them to do it. At least most of the resort they were in was fenced off; that could be a good foundation for the warding runes.
"Why is the kitchen so far away?!" Harry exclaimed as he spotted an indicator for the Country Store and Kitchen at the very bottom of the map, "Is there a way to transport a whole building? Because the cottages are pretty far away too. Maybe Luna would know."
The more he poured over the map the more confused he became at the placement of buildings, but he would hold any more judgement until he was able to visit them. At least it seemed like there were closer buildings that held areas to cook like the cafe or something called a tap room. He even spotted an area that held Villas and thought about perhaps making himself a home there after its been warded and cleaned out. The map showed that there were several bodies of water and even an area designated for fishing and a beach for swimming.
"So at least we could have fresh fish!" Harry said with a smile, "Oh look there's even an area to swim! Oh! And the Butterfly Center, it looks like a glass dome. Maybe Neville could use that for a greenhouse."
Harry, satisfied with his little find, decided to head back to the main building, even though he hadn't looked at the other buildings in the area. He was sure they were fine and they had been all cleared out before they laid the ward runes down just to make sure there were no dead in them. Thankfully Harry hadn't been to far away from the building, but stopped short as he heard a high pitched moan filter out through the open windows.
"I'll, um, come back later," Harry murmured and turned tail to run from the building only to be followed by another moan.
"I'm ready," Harry said as he slipped his bag onto his shoulder filled with items he would need. He had a smaller bag hanging on his hips that Luna had stitched runes in for preservation, decreasing the weight it held, and an enlargement rune so it could hold more than it should. Luna even gave him another bag that had cooling runes stitched into it to put anything that needed to keep cold. And Neville had given him a wooden box that held some potions in case he needed them.
"Got the two way?" Neville asked as he shoved something else into the bag on Harry's shoulders.
"Yeah," Harry replied with a nod, "Shrunken in my pocket. Check in every few hours."
"Good," Neville said as he patted Harry's shoulders, "So help me Merlin, if I have to come after you because you don't check in or get yourself hurt."
Harry let out a soft laugh and made his promise to check in again. He gave Neville a tight hug and turned to Luna to give her a hug as well as a soft kiss to her temple. He knew the two would be safe here in a warded area, but nonetheless he told them to be safe even if the words were only to lessen the worry in his heart for them. After a few more parting words Harry apparated to the co-ordinates Neville had given him.
He had been told that apparating to co-ordinates was a lot rougher than apparating to a place he had already been to and could visualize, and those that said so were right. When he re-appeared at the co-ordinates Harry fell to his knees and heaved, but thankfully he didn't lose what he had in his stomach. He took a few minutes to gather himself and take a few sips of water to calm his rolling stomach before getting up to take stock of where he was.
Welcome to Atlanta!
The huge sign cast a shadow that washed over him, giving him a sense of cooler air, but he wasn't able to stay long as he already started to hear shuffling and groaning heading his way. Harry, taking Neville's advice, hurried out of the area as he was sure any dead, or living, within a kilometers radius would have heard the loud crack of apparition. He dodged and killed the dead as he made his way closer to the city and climbed into trees to wait for herds to pass when there were too many for him to deal with on his own. The city seemed so close, but as he walked he soon found out that it was much further than Harry had once thought.
The sun had already started to go down, the times he had to wait for the herds to pass took too much time from the day, and so Harry started to look around for somewhere to stay the night. He could have slept in a tree, but he way the sky looked made him think that it was going to storm for the night. He passed cars with their windows busted out, mold in the interior, and other small creatures claiming them as their own dens. The buildings that lay in the outskirts of the city weren't much better, but Harry did manage to find somewhere he could rest until the storm passed.
It was a pile of building materials and such, but it had a makeshift roof and only one opening that Harry could close off for the next few hours, or until the storm passed. Once the eighteen year old secured the spot he settled down to take a break. He cracked one of the glow sticks he had, explaining what they were to Neville and Luna had been fun, for a bit of light before digging into his bag for the notebook. He wrote to Luna and Neville that he was safe, but had to wait out a storm before he could even start his scavenging and that he was safe. He had charmed his little space to keep any noise he made from escaping, but he wasn't able to keep any light from being seen and could only put up a small notice-me-not charm on his hiding place to hopefully keep wandering eyes away from his space.
Harry was just putting away the rest of his jerky when he heard something over the rain.
Crunch
Shlup
"Shit!"
Harry held his breath as he heard what was obviously a man walking around his hiding spot. It didn't sound like the man was having the best time walking around in the mud. Cautiously Harry peered into the little opening he left himself, it was small and only the size of a curled up fist, to see if he could see who was speaking. He heard someone, another man, snort in amusement of the other man.
"Shut up. Why are we out here anyway? We should have headed back to the others until the rain let up," the first man grumbled and came into Harry's view. He was taller than Harry, even though that wasn't hard to do, with a head full of dark hair like his own that clung to his face from the rain. The man wore a short sleeve shirt that clung to the muscle the man had, but also shown how skinny the man was. He had a crossbow strapped to his back and a knife on his hip. The man wasn't too bad to look at if Harry was honest with himself and he could easily imagine the man above him taking him. His magic purred at the thought and felt like it tried to reach out, but Harry reigned in his magic as he didn't want to bring any attention to himself.
The other man finally came into the small frame Harry had. He was taller than the first man and had blond hair closely shaved to his head. The man wore something similar to the other man and had his own weapons, a gun and a knife, attached to his hips.
"You feel that Merle?" the first man asked as he came to a stop a few feet from his hiding spot.
"Yeah, Daryl." Merle, the blond man, said as he reached for his own gun, "The tingling in the air? Someone around here is using magic."
Harry inhaled sharply and cursed under his breath as he turned from his window to grab his things and throw his bag on his back. How could he have been so stupid? Of course other magicals could feel magic when it's in use. He forgot to put a dampening rune down Luna had showed him to snuff out the feeling magic tends to give off when it's used. He didn't even have time to message Neville and Luna about what was going on when the metal sheet he had used to cover his hiding spot was pulled from the opening. Harry threw his bag on his back and whipped around, knife in one hand and wand in the other.
"Well, well, well, look at what we got here," Merle said, a smirk appearing on his lips and a gun pointed straight at Harry, "a little wizard."
