Henlo Nuggies! 'Tis the re-write! I do hope that this one will be tons better than the trash I wrote before. This will be quite a bit different from the original (I should hope so since it's a re-write), but it will have the usual warnings that most of my fics, aka this is a SLASH fic and will end up having M!Preg in it as well. Now, I'm not gonna write too much more here, but I do hope y'all end up enjoying this re-write as much as the original.

AN: Hello everyone, apologies for the late update, but here it is! Within the last few weeks I have gotten several offers to commission CM into a comic/digital art. I do appreciate the offers however I will have to decline. I simply do not make enough to commission artwork from y'all and the economy is just getting worse. If I were in a better economical state I might consider it, but unfortunately that is not the case. Thank you for the offers.
Enjoy!
Harry did the only thing that came to his frantic mind and apparated away to the last location he had been at. Sure, he would have to walk all the way back, but then the two men would be gone presumably to look for him elsewhere. With a loud pop, and a brief moment of hearing the two men curse, the teen disappeared from the two men's view and ended up back at the welcome sign leading to the city. There were a few walkers that had heard his arrival, but it didn't take long for him to dispose of them with cutting hexes and a few jabs of his knife. Harry mentally cursed as he began to jog towards the city. The rain had eased up just a bit so at least he could see where he was going, but he was quickly getting soaked.
He needed to find a place to hole up for his stay in the city and he needed to let Neville and Luna know that there were people who knew of magic around. He was unsure if they were magical themselves or if they were squibs and for the moment he didn't want to find out. The jog to the city let him think at least and analyze the encounter. The two men, obviously built for the outdoors, were much larger than he was and while he was sure he could take them on magically, he knew he could not physically. The other thing that made him worry was his magic. How it purred when he locked eyes with the darker haired man and how it now feels despondent when he left the man behind. He felt both fear and a little hope at it. From everything Neville and Luna had told him it was a sign of either being magically compatible or that he just found his soulmate.
It was usually a one in a million chance to find his other half, but in the apocalypse he would have thought it was unheard of. Then again unusual things tend to happen to him. He just hoped that this unusual thing actually was meant to be a good thing and not a bad one. Harry wondered if he should try and find them again as he reached the edge of the city, but he shoved away that thought as he had to duck into a building as gunshots began to go off. He hunkered down behind a reception desk as he counted the shots. One shot, then two, the another after another until the shots stopped for either running out of bullets or, whoever was shooting, had either killed what they were shooting at or had been killed for shooting.
Harry counted to thirty all the while listening for any other noises besides the ones coming from the dead before leaving his hiding spot. There was a walker in the room with him, but it was facing the doorway and slowly shuffling out of the room leaving it vulnerable to the knife he shoved into its head and slowly lowered it down to the floor to reduce noise. The teen cautiously stepped outside to see groups and stragglers of walkers making their way to where the noise happened.
Looking down the street where they were heading Harry didn't see anything except for a military tank that had seen better days and a group of walkers converging on a horse, whose whinnying was quickly falling more and more silent. Harry whispered a soft magical prayer for the horse before leaving the building he had been hiding in. He might as well leave while the walkers were distracted.
Harry made stops at different stores to gather what he could, but it seemed like the city had been well picked through, at least the area he was in had been. He dipped into fabrics stores, stationary stores, amusingly there was a store that sold wiccan and pagan items, but he was sure the muggles didn't actually know that some of the items were indeed magical in nature. Most items that were sold in those types of stores were so weak in magic that several ministries around the globe made it legal to sell them to muggles. Even as weak as they were, Harry did gather what was still good before moving on. He wandered around a big box store that still had a few items and he had to shrink a few pieces of furniture to fit in his bag, but again there wasn't much that hadn't been ruined by animals or the elements.
His last stop for the day was plant nursery. He was sure there was something there since most people wouldn't think about raiding a place like it until it was too late and everything was rotten. While Harry was a bit late getting there he was sure Neville could work some of his magic on anything he picked up there. The place was large and open, but there was a tall fence surrounding the place making it seem safe. He cautiously walked in, his head on a swivel as he looked around, he didn't hear anything besides the muffled groans of the dead outside of the building. Harry didn't let his guard down though. The place, while covered in dust, seemed just a bit too managed as if there had been someone there not too long ago cutting away some of the foliage. The plants weren't overly grown inside, there were boards against the fencing that he could see from the window and there were footprints in the dust on the floor. Both human and animal.
The animal prints were big and canine like. He wasn't sure that he had ever seen a dog with paws that large. Curiously he crouched beside the print and held his hand beside it to compare. Not that it was a fair comparison since Harry did have small hands. To his shock the paw print was easily twice the size of his hand and it both made him scared that the animal could still be here and he just trapped himself in with it and absolutely fascinated that a canine could become so large. His only references for dogs were Ripper and Snuffles after all. Now that he knew something perhaps more dangerous than walkers were around Harry moved a bit more cautiously through the building.
He bagged what he could see, tools, seeds, soils, books, and other things that may be needed. The further back he went the more he saw that the plants had started to become overgrown like whoever had lived here didn't make it that far in. The paw prints however were another story. They continued on out the back door of the building where Harry had been heading to go to the outside portion of the nursery. Wincing as the door creaked as he opened it, Harry stepped out into the fenced in area and looked aroud. The concrete was water logged as the rain that had come through finally passed leaving the sun to make its appearance. His steps splashed gently as he walked down one of the clearer aisles and was a bit sad that he didn't see anything that he thought they could use or salvage. Most of the potted plants were flowering plants and were tipped over and their pots broken, but what had grown, grew in abundance making the area look more like a man made jungle than anything else.
The sounds of panting and whining caught Harry's attention. He could hear it just in a slight break of silence from the groaning walkers. Slowly he moved to a crouch as if to hide in the plants from whatever was panting and whining from seeing him. The last thing he needed was getting attacked from some feral animal or a cornered injured human. Harry surveyed the area to see where the noise had been coming from and decided to quietly walk further into the overgrown foliage. It didn't take him long to see spots on the ground. Some bright red and others a muddled brown like old blood. He fell back into his crouch as he let his eyes look along the trail of blood and where it led.
There in some of the dense foliage formed into a den like shape was a large animal. It was curled up, shoulders and chest heaving as it panted, and the blood on the concrete was smeared, but not pooling, telling Harry that the wound this animal had perhaps wasn't a large one. The creature looked like a wolf with the sheer size of it, but its coloring wasn't something had ever seen on any wolf picture he had seen. It was solid black with a feathering of white around its neck fluff and tail, it had dark red stripes through its fur that seemed only visible to the eye when the sun hit it. Harry cautiously took a step forward, but it had been right into a puddle, and made a splashing noise making the eyes of the canine fly open.
Its eyes were two different colors. Its right eye was a bright arctic blue while the left eye was a dark color, but he could tell if it were a dark brown or black from how far he was. A deep rumbling growl came from the creature making Harry stop in his tracks and tried to make himself seem small and harmless. Harry didn't know how long he had kept his eyes on the canine, but slowly the growling tapered off until all, but the sounds of the walkers, fell quiet. The poor thing, once Harry had gotten a better look at it, looked very skinny like it hadn't been fed. Then again when was the last time any one around here had a decent meal. Slowly he reached into the side pocket of his bag where he had kept a bag of jerky and pulled it out. The canine must have smelled it when Harry opened the bag because all of a sudden the tip of its tail started to wag and a whine burst out of the creature.
"Hungry?" Harry asked softly with a gentle smile on his face, "Here, you could use this more than I can." Harry tore off pieces of jerky and tossed it towards the canine. Close enough so that the beast didn't have to get up to grab the pieces. Ever so slowly Harry started to get closer to the wolf-dog creature and once he was within a couple of feet of it he could see that there was a collar around its neck. It was hidden by its fur and looked entirely too small like the canine had grown up with it around its neck. All Harry could assume is that this creature was still a pup and not fully grown given the size of its paws.
"Want some water?" Harry asked a little redundantly, seeing as he was sure the pup had gotten water from all the rainfall this area was getting. Nonetheless he grabbed his bottle of water, rune etched to keep the water cool and never empty thanks to duplication runes, and a plant pot that looked the cleanest for the pup to drink out of. As the creature drank from the pot Harry cautiously reached out to run his fingers through thick fur and as he touched the wolf-dog's body he felt a rush of magic coursing through his arm.
"Another familiar? I thought we only get one?" Harry murmured as the familiar bond settled within his core. Sure he had Aragorn, but it wasn't a familiar bond that kept the snake coming back to him. Harry couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt at the thought that he was perhaps betraying Hedwig with having another familiar, but he knew better. She would have just wanted him to be happy and not alone. Harry took a deep breath as he shook the thought out of his head since he didn't need to delve into those kinds of thoughts for the moment. The pup finished drinking the water and was just looking at him with wide puppy eyes that were filled with cautious adoration.
"I think I'll name you Regis, how does that sound?" Harry asked softly as a small smile graced his lips. The soft rumble from the wolf-dog was all he was given as an answer. Harry carefully cleaned the wounds, just a few cuts, and wrapped his chest with the rest of the gauze he had, as Harry wasn't sure if Regis' ribs were injured in any way, and to cover the cuts to keep dirt and infection out. He didn't want to touch them right now and hurt the pup any more than he already was. Once Regis was up and good to walk around with him Harry led the way out of the plant nursery and back into the thick of the city.
Harry spent a couple more days in the city, not going too deep because of all the walkers, just scrounging around at different stores for things. He had found a few things that charged using solar power, a portable electric grill, and surprisingly stumbled across an entire box of canned tuna still within date. Beggars can't be choosers so Harry bagged all the tuna in his bag before moving on. He came across a store that sold homely things like bedding and kitchen ware that still had a few good things in it that hadn't been ruined so it all went into his bag of goodies. He couldn't wait to see Luna and Neville's faces when he came back to the Keep with a literal mattress in a box.
With only having been with him for a couple of days, Regis was doing well with commands. Harry thought that their bond also helped in that regard. The pup knew how to hide when walkers came by, Harry didn't want him fighting until he was healed up, and not make a sound. Harry hoped to teach him more, but then again they only had this bond for a couple of days. They had time to learn.
"Okay Regis, I think I've got enough to take back," Harry said as he looked down at the pup. Regis merely let out a sneeze in response, making a small smile appear on Harry's lips at how adorable it was. Harry was just about to take a step towards the street from the alleyway the two had been in when from a small distance away came a loud siren. Harry stood still as suddenly the siren started to get louder and louder. He couldn't help but peek out of the alley and his eyes widened as he saw a bright red-orange car blaring its horn as it sped past his hiding spot. Harry ducked back into the alley and covered his face from the dirt the car flew around in its wake before cursing. That noise was surely going to attract Walkers from all over into following it.
In fact Harry could already hear them shuffling along the trashed street. Harry, while urging Regis, dashed further into the alley and away from the mouth of the alley where Walkers could easily spot him and go after them. He looked around the alley to see if there was a way to get higher and thankfully there was a fire escape not far from where they stood. Part of it seemed to have rusted and fallen leaving gaps, but they were small enough to easily be able to jump. Without much else he could do Harry led the way, with Regis right behind him, up the steps. He winced at the loud noise they were making, but thankfully he could use the fallen metal pieces with the sticking charm to make a sort of wall by one of the tops of the stairs to stop any Walkers that may be following them.
Harry was panting by the time they made it to the roof, with Harry having to levitate Regis up the ladder he had to climb, and laid down to catch his breath. The blaring horn had faded in the distance some time ago, but the shuffling and groaning of the Walkers was still loud as herds of various sizes made their way to the last location of the horn. Of course the building he just so happened to climb was one of the taller buildings in the area, but from up here he had a great aerial view. Once he had caught his breath and had some water Harry walked over to the edge of the building to look down at the street. The street seemed to be more empty than it previously had been, but he could see a massive herd towards the end of the street where the car had gone.
He debated how to use this time. Should he leave? Stay the night? Or-
Loud cursing from a slightly familiar voice sounded from the building across the street making Harry look over. Merle, one of the two southern men from before, seemed to be stretched across the roof. One hand was close to one of the poles with the other outstretched as if to grab something but fell short. Harry studied the scene for a moment wondering why Merle just didn't let go of the pole only to see a glint of something metal a moment later.
"Is he fucking handcuffed to the pole?!" Harry exclaimed, not loudly, but loud enough that a Walker, one that hadn't followed its brethren, started to bang on the closed roof door. Harry winced and chanced a glance backwards just to make sure the door stayed closed before looking towards Merle again. Should he help the man? Leave him there? His 'saviour complex' reared its head at the thought of leaving the man and his magic broiled at the thought that this man, someone who seemed to be close to that other guy his magic seemed so fond of, could die and harm the other one. His instincts screamed to help him.
"Fuck," Harry cursed again as he shook his head. He kept his eye on the other man, not really wanting to draw attention to himself, but also to make sure the door to the roof the man was on didn't open. He was confident that if it did he could apparate over and help him. He heard Regis whimper softly beside him and turned around to see if there was anyone, or anything, behind him, but thankfully there wasn't. Perhaps the pup had been reacting to his emotions. Harry reached over and ran his fingers through thick fur and casted a cooling charm on the heated hybrid when he noticed how warm the pup was.
"I'll wait here a bit," Harry said softly to himself, "Just to see if anyone comes back for him. If not then I guess I'll pop over there." Harry took a deep breath as he moved to settle down for the time being. He didn't need to go anywhere since he had pretty much picked the stores around this area clean of things they could use, and so it gave him time to just sit for a moment. He did pull out his notebook to update Neville and Luna, but after a few minutes he never got a reply back so he assumed they were preoccupied by something else. He took a peek over the half wall at the edge of the roof to see the man. Merle seemed to have given up and was sitting back against the poles he was chained to. He could see how red Merle was getting and it was quite the hot day. Harry was sure the man hadn't been left any provisions.
Harry didn't know how long he had been watching the man, only that the sun had started to fall leaving the apocalyptic scene covered in a golden hue. He did wonder where the other brother was at and why he had left Merle on the roof, but pehaps there was more to the story than the little bit he had seen. By the time the sun was gone Merle seemed to have fallen asleep and Harry could cautiously make his way over.
He decided to go back the way he came up so he didn't wake the man or call the walkers to him if he apparated. He gently lowered Regis first before following him down on the ladder. He unstuck the things he used to block the stairway and silently put them on the ground. Sure there were a few walkers, but it was easy taking them down and dodging others as he made his way across the street to the building Merle was on.
Thankfully it seemed like the building he was in wasn't filled with Walkers. There were a few however that he took care of just to make sure they couldn't get to the roof. It seemed as though whoever left Merle there didn't even try to make sure that the man would be safe. Nothing was blocked off to keep any wandering Walkers out and once he reached the roof he could see that Merle didn't even have a weapon to defend himself with. Now that he had gotten a closer look at the man he could see just how bad that sunburn was starting to get. If Merle didn't get any cover soon, or get any cream for the burn, he would blister terribly.
Cautiously Harry walked over to the man, who was still asleep or unconscious, and observed him for a moment. The larger chest moved up and down indicating that he was at least still breathing. His skin, other than being red, had a few sores that looked like Merle had been picking at making them look worse and a couple even seemed to be getting infected. Harry could smell alcohol on his person and the smell made his nose wrinkle. Harry pulled out his wand and spelled the man asleep, just to make sure he stayed that way, before banishing the handcuffs.
He used Levicorpus to move Merle into the shade between two large metal boxes on the roof before casting a diagnosis charm to see what was wrong with him. It took a few tries to get the spell right since he hadn't really used it before, but soon enough he was looking at the paper his wand spouted out.
"Drugs. Some hard ones too," Harry murmured as he banished the paper, "A Sobering Potion would do you some good. The world has ended, but that doesn't mean you should resort to drugs, mate. Unhealthy, destructible habit that is." Harry let out a sigh as he dug through his bag for such a potion before spelling it into Merle. He wouldn't be sure the man would have taken it himself if he just left it. Harry next cast an accio on drugs he may have been carrying, which thankfully there was none, before deciding to leave the man a note.
He chuckled softly to himself as he cheekily signed it with 'Little Wizard', the 'name' Merle had called him when they met days ago. He placed it in the man's pocket before making his way back to the roof door to leave. It was high time he made it back to Neville and Luna.
