When Kensi had said that to her partner, the injured detective looked at his mother. "Ma, can you take Dani out for a few minutes?"
"No!" Dani squealed, hugging her father's arm tightly.
"Hey, hey it's alright sweetheart. It's alright. My friend Kensi is going to keep us all safe, I just have to talk to her for a few minutes. We won't be long I promise" He assured his daughter gently.
"Pinky promise?" She held out her small pinky finger.
He smiled and looped his pinky finger with hers. "I pinky promise"
She kissed his cheek and he kissed her cheek in return. "Go with Nana"
Dani got off the bed and went with her grandmother out the room, Kensi advised the older woman to stay close by. Roberta had left out with her granddaughter. The injured detective looked at his partner.
"I'm sorry. I was gonna tell you guys, I didn't wanna put Dani in danger. Being a cop is enough to put her in danger. Adding this into the mix, I didn't wanna take any chances" Deeks rambled.
"Deeks, hey. I'm not mad I totally understood why you did what you did. You were protecting her, I would have done the same thing if I had been in your shoes. The job is dangerous, it's understandable you wanna protect her. Sam is the exact same way" Kensi consoled him.
"I already lost her mother to the job I can't lose her too"
It had started dawning on her when Dani said some, 'Is daddy gonna die too?' After snapping from her thoughts she looked at him.
"Dani asked if you would die too, does that mean her mother.." She trailed off.
"Grace died a year ago today. She was a fed and she was killed in the line of duty" He choked up.
"Deeks, I'm so sorry"
"I try to protect her from this world. I couldn't protect Grace so" He sniffed, wiping his eyes and Kensi finished.
"You protect Dani"
He nodded. "While I work, my mom looks after her for me"
"You're a good father Deeks"
"I try to be, being a full time parent and dealing with the demands of this job, it's hard to balance and juggle but I manage. While I work Dani is in school and my mom watches her till I get off, I try not to be that dad who cares more about his job than his kid. I love Dani with my heart and soul"
"You sound like a natural parent"
"She's not dating either, not ever"
Kensi couldn't help but laugh. "Now you sound like Sam"
Deeks had then had a fearful look. "Any news on who shot me? Are they after my mom and Dani?"
"That's what I came to ask you. Do you remember the guy that shot you?"
"He didn't look familiar, there was two of them"
"Have you had any threats? Maybe from an old case, an old feud, anything that comes to mind?"
"No. None that come to mind"
"Would Dani tell you if someone was bugging her? Has she or your mother said anything?"
"They haven't said anything to me"
"And the guys didn't seem at all familiar?"
"No, not that I remember. Kensi, if this is about me you gotta protect my mom and little girl please. Give them a detail. Get them someplace safe"
"I will. I'll keep them at the boat shed. I'll see if Hetty can spare someone"
"Please, I've already lost Grace. I can't lose either of them"
"I'll call Callen and Sam, see if they can do a quick transport and talk with your mom"
"Keep Dani away from it. Please. I don't want this following her"
"Deeks, calm down. I will. You just rest and I'll go call Callen"
"Thank you"
The female agent smiled and gave him a nod. She stepped outside of the room, she stayed close to her partner's family to keep them safe. Kensi stepped away to call her other partner.
"How is he Kensi?" Callen asked, answering his phone.
"He's gonna make it. Can you and Sam come to the hospital, we need a detail escort" Kensi replied.
"Detail escort? For who? Deeks can't leave"
"Come up here and you'll see. Make it quick"
"We'll be there soon"
"Understood"
She hung up and turned to Roberta who held her granddaughter's hand, the agent had gone over to them.
"Mrs. Deeks, until we find out what happened with your son we're gonna put you and Dani into protective custody until the case is over. My other two partners are gonna come and escort you guys someplace safe" Kensi explained the situation.
"Why can't we stay with daddy?" Dani asked.
"It's still too dangerous sweetie, I promise I'll keep your dad safe. He's my partner and it's my job to keep him safe" The female agent gently explained to her.
"And it's just until all this is over right?" Roberta asked.
"Yes ma'am"
Roberta nodded and kept her granddaughter close. A short time later Callen and Sam had arrived at the hospital and looked around for any and all possible threats they hadn't spotted any yet. The two walked to their female partner.
"Kensi, hey. So what's the detail escort for?" Callen asked.
She gave a slight turn behind her back and then back to her partners. "The woman and the little girl behind me" Taking a deep breath she then spoke again. "They're Deeks mother and daughter"
The two were shocked and brought them over. "Mrs. Deeks, Dani, these are my partners Agent Callen and Agent Sam Hanna. Callen, Sam, these are Deeks mother, Roberta and his daughter Dani"
