Chapter 17: Migration

"Is this what it felt like when you first started training me?" I asked.

"Eh, kind of," Maria hummed next to me. "You were a lot weaker when you started fighting Grimm, but you weren't as nervous as some of them. Hell, after the first day you began to like fighting a bit too much."

I let out a short laugh. That was probably true. I might occasionally go overboard when I fight Grimm, especially those that don't die instantly.

Maria and I watched the Sanctum Academy students from high up in a tree where we had a good view of what was going on. Tens of trees had been cut down to create a makeshift clearing where the students would have enough space.

The wood was used to narrow the Grimm's entrance point into the clearing. It was done to ensure that the entire area wouldn't be overwhelmed with Grimm, although it might have been a little unnecessary. The military grade Atlas tech that was set up around the area would be more than enough to fall back on if anything went wrong.

Large dust powered guns were set up around fall back points and would activate when a Grimm entered their proximity. The main camp was surrounded by a dozen of these guns along with sensors that both detected Grimm and ensured that only they were targeted.

"It seems things are finally starting," Maria hummed.

Looking down into the clearing, I saw that she was right. Grimm had finally started to appear, but hadn't entered the field where the students were waiting.

"How do you think red is going to do?"

"Pyrrha will do fine. She's pretty strong, you know," I replied, glancing at Pyrrha who held her shield in front of her with her spear reared back to strike at the Grimm.

"Yeah, I know… I've seen her fight in the Regional tournament and I've spent enough time around her here already to know that she's physically capable," Maria hummed. "But you and I both know that's not what was reffering to. Fighting Grimm is different than fighting in a tournament."

I would argue that Fighting in a tournament was more stressful than fighting Grimm, but Maria might be right. Unlike when in a tournament or training against Androids, Grimm wouldn't stop when the match is called, they wanted you dead and wouldn't stop until they either accomplished that goal or died themselves.

There was also the feeling of killing a Grimm. Although they evaporated after death, they were still made out of flesh, bone and a black liquid that acted as their blood while alive. The Sanctum Academy students that were used to fighting against metal machines might freeze up when they finally sank their blade into a Grimm.

I was brought out of my musing by a loud howl coming from a Beowolf that was interrupted by a gunshot. The battle had finally begun as Grimm poured into the valley.

There was no formation, to attempt to organize in battle, only chaos as the students tore into the incoming Grimm with guns, swords and a variety of other weapons. A few students did freeze up when they cut down a Grimm, but they quickly adjusted.

Pyrrha herself took point, cutting through the hoard of Grimm with great efficiency. Spinning around, She sliced through several approaching Ursa with practiced ease.

Seeing a group of Alpha Beowolves heading her way, Pyrrha threw her shield at them, cutting through several of them before her shield bounced back.

"It seems that I was wrong. Red's got the right mindset," Maria said, before laughing. "Good thing I didn't bet money on it."

I rolled my eyes.

It was going to be a long and boring day, but that wasn't too bad. Boring just meant that everything was going according to plan, besides there was only one more day left before this excursion was over and Maria and I would be free to continue our travels.

Watching as the hoard of Grimm began to grow larger, I sighed. I did want to go down and help fight the Grimm, but this was for the Sanctum Academy students, not me. If I went down there, I'd just end up taking out all of the Grimm myself.

…Breathe…

Several hours passed before the last Grimm was killed and we were able to head back to camp. Having spent the day fighting the students were exhausted, but also in high spirits. This had been their first true encounter with Grimm and they'd successfully managed to fight them off without injury.

"Alright everyone," Professor Greene called out. "We don't have anything else scheduled for the day. You've all got free time until tomorrow morning at 9 where we'll do one final patrol of the area and kill any Grimm that might have slipped by us, so be sure to get some rest. None of you are permitted to leave the boundaries of the camp."

If any of them actually wanted to sneak off into the woods for whatever reason, I would honestly be a little impressed.

Sitting down on a log in front of our tent, I watched Maria spark up a quick fire using dust to ignite the wood.

"Hello, do you mind…" Pyrrha began tiredly

"Just sit already," Maria said while taking a seat across from me. "You already spent a good chunk of last night sitting here, you really don't need to ask again."

"…If you're sure," Pyrrha replied, sitting down on the log next to me.

Letting out a yawn, Pyrrha leaned into my side. Knowingly, or unknowingly, she seemed too tired to care.

"So, what did you think of your first real fight against Grimm?" I asked.

"It was… an experience," Pyrrha hummed. "They weren't really that strong, but there were just so many of them. I would have eventually been overwhelmed if I was on my own. Was it the same for you when you first started fighting Grimm?"

"Kind of," I scratched the back of my head, recalling the first time Maria took me out to hunt Grimm. "Back when I first started training, Maria and I went out in search of Grimm in the woods and she had me fight them."

"I remember those times," Maria said with a wistful smile, like it had been years ago when it had only been a few months. "Even when you were exhausted and your Aura was empty, you kept asking for more."

Pyrrha let out another yawn. "I think I understand that thing you told me the other day… about a sound soul, mind and body. I'm not just physically tired, but also mentally as well. I need to train more than just my techniques and Aura. That's why I'm not able to beat you… it's why you're so much stronger than me."

Well she wasn't exactly wrong there, but she didn't have the full picture. I was beginning to wonder if I should actually teach Pyrrha some form of breathing techniques. She was trustworthy and I already knew she wouldn't abuse the breathing technique, but with sharing it, there was a risk of others who would abuse it learning how to do it.

It was safe for Oscar to learn as no one actually knew him, but Pyrrha was different in that she was a celebrity in Mistral. They knew how she fought and what she was capable of. If she suddenly started regenerating Aura at the same rate I do, they would know that it's something that can be learned.

"What are you agonizing over now?" Maria asked, sighing.

"Hm?" I hummed questioningly.

"You're stressing about something. It's written all over your face," Maria pointed out.

"I'm just… thinking about the training I did to get this strong," I replied. "And wondering how it might help others as well."

"… I see," Maria said, glancing to the sleepy Pyrrha at my side. "If you truly feel that way, then I won't argue against it, but I will say that there isn't a rush. Take some time to figure out if it's really what you want to do and if it is then go for it."

I suppose she was right. I shouldn't rush into anything. There was still plenty of time to teach Pyrrha Total Concentration Breathing.

"What are we talking about?" Pyrrha asked tiredly.

"Nothing too important," I replied.

"Really?" Pyrrha asked, her green eyes shining brightly from the flickering fire in front of us.

"Yep," I deflected. Seeing that she wasn't convinced, I decided to change the subject. "Hey, how about I tell you a story?"

"A story?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "I was actually reminded of one when I first fought you back in the tournament and again when I saw how you were handling the Grimm today. It's about a war during ancient times with a small army only a few hundred strong fending off tens of thousands of enemies."

"That sounds interesting," Pyrrha said, looking a bit more awake now.

Seeing that Pyrrha was now giving her full attention, I began with the story. "The first thing you should know is about the defending nation, one that was known for making the ultimate warriors that treated war as a vacation. The Spartans."

…Breathe…

Pyrrha's head leaned on my shoulder. Her eyes were closed and she was snoring softly with a content look on her face. I'd just managed to finish telling her an abridged version of the battle of Thermopylae, before she fell asleep.

"Smooth moves," Maria smirked.

"What?"

"Oh, nothing. I'm just commenting on how you've gotten red to fall asleep on your shoulder," Maria replied. "I really should give you the talk sometime."

"I really don't need it," I deadpanned.

"I noticed," Maria hummed. "You know, Coal. The two of us… we tend to live in the moment and we don't talk about the past, but it seems that you've remembered some things."

Ah, so that's what this was about.

"Some things are still a little blurry, but I have remembered a lot," I nodded.

"And you've never wanted to talk about that?" Maria asked. "You do know that you could tell me, right. I'm the absolute last person that would judge you."

"Maria… Thank you," I smiled. If there was one person I could count on in this world, it would be her. "I never really brought it up because that's all in the past. Looking back and lamenting it wouldn't do me any good. There's only one path for me now and that's forward."

"So long as you're not needlessly stressing over it," Maria breathed, stretching in her seat. "If you ever feel like you need to talk to someone about it…"

"I'll find a bartender and dump all of my problems on him," I nodded.

Maria let out a soft snort of laughter. "Yeah sure, or come talk to me."

We both fell into a comfortable silence. We only had one more day out here with the Sanctum students before we would be heading off to…

"Hey, Maria. What's the next ste… Damnit."

"What?"

"The shadows back… again," I muttered, seeing the figure standing just outside of the light from the fire, its shape distinct in the darkness of the night.

"Just ignore it," Maria shrugged.

I would, however that might not be such a good idea. Each time I'd seen the shadow it had led me to something that I needed. The first time being the body at Black Rock that triggered my memories with the second being the frozen lake and the third, Grimm for me to test my Nichirin sword on.

It seemed to be helping me in its own sort of way.

"I think I'll just go and see what it wants this time," I replied, glancing at Pyrrha who was heavily leaning on me.

"If you're sure," Maria waved me off.

Standing up, I gently set Pyrrha onto the ground and took my jacket of, placing it under her head as a makeshift pillow. She would eventually have to go back to her tent, but she could stay here for now. I'd wake her after I was done with whatever it was the shadow wanted to show me.

Following after the Shadow at a slow pace, it led me directly through the camp passed the students tents, towards the edge of the camp near one of the sensors. Stopping at the base of a large pine tree, the Shadow merely looked up.

Copying it, I glanced up the tree to find… nothing. There was nothing out of the ordinary. It was just a regular tree.

"I don't get it."

The Shadow looked at me, its face completely devoid of any defining features. It slowly pointed to the top of the tree.

"You want me to… climb the tree?"

The Shadow nodded.

I glanced around to make sure that no one was around to see me, before sighing. Crouching down, I jumped up into the tree, quickly scaling it. The sooner I got this done, the sooner I could go back to my tent.

Nearing the top, I spotted a small nest with a couple of fuzzy chicks that chirped in fright, a large black bird sitting behind them began to squawk at me. A second bird was circling the tree angrily.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll be out of your way now," I muttered, climbing past the nest. "I'm not here to hurt your babies."

Reaching the top, I ignored the black bird as it followed and continued to harass me. Now what was it the Shadow wanted me to see?

The shattered moon didn't make for a great source of light, but I made due. Opening my senses to the world, I began to look for anything that the Shadow might want me to see, a task made harder by the constant squawking in my ear.

I finally caught it, the faint smell of smoke and burnt meat. Straining my eyes, I caught wisps of smoke in the distance. Several miles away.

No one was supposed to be out here. This place had been specifically chosen because there were few people and even fewer Grimm with a small migration heading towards one of the larger cities in Mistral and yet there was a fire in the distance.

Catching some movement down in the forest, I caught sight of a head peeking out from behind one of the trees. Looking around rapidly, I saw someone rush for cover behind another tree, a weapon strapped to their side.

Bandits. It hadn't been a Grimm migration, it had been Grimm tracking bandits. Realizing, I quickly glanced down to the birds nest only to find that the bird that had been circling the tree was currently nesting happily.

A hand wrapped around my mouth.

"You should have stayed in your tent," A female voice said as something pointy struck my back.

"Hm, it seems you still have some Aura left after today. No matter."

-250AP

Tensing my legs, I kicked off with as much force as I could muster, breaking free from the woman's hold, soaring towards the camp center.

"Sun Breathing: Flash, One Step"

"BANDITS!" I yelled out in warning as I landed, skidding to a stop. Drawing my sword, I turned around just in time to see the woman land in front of me. Black and red clothing, long black hair, a Grimm mask, a dust blade sheath. There was no doubt in my mind, this was Raven Branwen.

Several students got out of their tent in a rush, looking more unprepared than anything. Mr. Greene stepped from his tent wielding a large ruler of all things and Maria rushed to my side at high speed.

"You just had to make things complicated, didn't you?" Raven asked

"Well I wasn't going to make this easy for you," I replied, before glaring at her. "After all, you did just try to kill me."

Maria glared at Raven, unfolding her scythe. "Did she now?"

"Identify yourself and explain your intentions," Mr. Greene announced, pointing his ruler towards Raven.

"And if I don't?"

"Then we will be forced to take you into custody and hand you over to the Atlesian military," Mr. Greene grunted.

"Well I just happened across your camp and noticed all this equipment you've got," Raven commented. "And I've decided to make you a deal. Leave all of your equipment, your weapons and that girl," She pointed to Pyrrha who just arrived. "And no one here will be harmed."

"That will not be happening," Mr. Greene glared.

"Have it your way then," Raven smirked before whistling suddenly.

Nearly two dozen bandits stormed into the camp, roaring as they attacked everyone in their sight. M. Greene rushed off to help his students fend off the attacking bandits, his ruler separating into a pair of blades while Maria and I remained unmoving, watching Raven cautiously.

"You should go help the students, I'll handle little miss bandit queen," Maria said, positioning her scythe behind her.

"We both know that's not going to happen," I replied, readying myself. "I'm not leaving you alone with this one, she's dangerous. Don't worry, I won't get in your way."

Raven slowly drew her sword and gestured for us to come.

Tensing my legs, I kicked off towards Raven at high speed.

"Sun Breathing: Flash, One Step"

Sparks shot off our blades as they collided at high speed. Maria aimed to land a blow on Raven while I kept her blade preoccupied, but she'd managed to angle it so that her scabbard took the blow instead.

"Predictable," Raven mocked. "Is that all that you can do? Use your Semblance to try and catch me off guard?"

It was clear to me that if I wanted to have any chance beating or even warding Raven off, I was not going to be able to hold back at all.

Bringing my blade up, I brought it down with much more force this time.

"Sun Breathing: Dance"

Much to Raven's surprise, I managed to force her back, giving Maria the opportunity to land a clean blow on her.

Seeing her blade rush towards me, I rapidly twisted my body out of the way.

"Sun Breathing: False Rainbow."

"It seems that I was wrong about you," Raven muttered. "You've got potential."

Rushing forward, my blade locked with Raven's once more. I continued to spam Sun Breathing techniques over and over again, allowing Maria to land a blow on Raven each time, however, she wasn't phased by us even though we were able to fight her on even terms.

She was the Spring maiden, so she wasn't giving this fight her all. On her own, she was incredibly powerful, but she was holding back. Initially, I'd wondered why, but quickly figured it out.

Using her magic here would be too risky. There might be Grimm around that had the capabilities of reporting to Salem. If it gets out that she's the Spring maiden then she gains a lot of unwanted attention.

I rushed away from Raven to gain a much needed reprieve, Maria followed closely by my side. Sheathing my blade, I took the brief break as an opportunity to increase its heat using fire dust.

"All that fighting and we've only taken a third of her Aura," Maria muttered.

That wasn't exactly good news. I was only able to keep up with Raven due to my Sun Breathing techniques that I'd been spamming and I couldn't keep that up forever… yet. My Aura regenerated at a monstrous rate, but I would still need to wait five minutes to be back to 100% and I was currently at…

AP: 1350/10375

That wasn't good. I would only be able to use a few more Sun Breathing Techniques before I completely exhaust my Aura. Maybe there was a way to force Raven to retreat without dropping her Aura too low.

"Maria, do you think you could last thirty seconds without me?" I asked softly. I could feel the sheath growing hot in my hand as the fire dust igniter that Ignis had built into it did its job.

"I'll give you a minute just to be sure," Maria muttered. "You got a plan."

"Something like that," I hummed. "I'll be back once I'm done."

"Heh, got it," Maria replied. "Just remember, you can hesitate all you want later, but not right now."

Nodding, I unsheathed my blade, briefly noticing that it was red hot now before turning my attention to Raven who was beginning to approach.

Tensing my legs, I prepared to use one of my favorite Sun Breathing techniques.

"Sun Breathing: Flash, Ten Steps"
-500AP

Racing towards Raven, just as it seemed I might make contact, I darted around her and continued on towards the camp. Each step forward increased my speed massively.

Coming across my first bandit, I swung my red hot blade at a rapid pace, shattering his Aura and cutting through him in one smooth move.

Continuing onward, I rushed forward to a group of students that were beginning to be overwhelmed by a larger group of bandits. It wasn't that the bandits were more skilled or powerful, it was that the students weren't prepared to kill and the bandits had no issue with it. Luckily it seemed none of the students had died yet.

Relieving the bandits of their heads I didn't stop. Coming across Mr. Greene, he was being held off by a woman who was a lot better than the rest of the bandits had been.

AP: 930/10375

My use of Sun Breathing Techniques hadn't allowed me to regenerate much Aura, but I still had enough to deal with her.

Taking a breath, I raced towards the woman with the intent on piercing her with my blade.

"Sun Breathing: Sunflower Thru…"

Before my blade could touch her, there was a loud crack and I felt pain as I was thrown backward. I briefly thought I heard someone scream my name, but I couldn't hear over the ringing in my ears.

"Thank you Vernal," Raven said as she entered the destroyed camp.

Ping!

Your Aura has been depleted. Due to…

I dismissed the notification. There was no time to read right now, I was still in a fight after all.

Attempting to push myself to my feet, I collapsed back into the ground. My muscles weren't responding correctly, they were tensed up and there was a crackling sensation rushing through my body.

I'd been struck by lightning.

"You're still alive?! You certainly are a strong one. It's a pity that we had to be on opposite sides, you would have fit in well with the Branwen tribe," Raven muttered. Bringing her blade forward, she aimed it at my chest. "I'll make this quick."

I fought to move, but found that I couldn't. Nothing moved right. My muscles were now twitching rapidly and the world was beginning to feel blurry. Raven's blade inched towards my chest, however, just as it made contact, it was ripped out of her hand by an unseen force before a shield collided with her face, forcing her a few steps back.

"Stay away from him," Pyrrha ordered. Anger burned in her eyes as she stepped in front of me.

"Hm, the Invincible Girl. There will certainly be people in Argus willing to pay well for your return," Raven hummed. Slowly stepping to the side, she retrieved her sword and briefly sheathed it, only, when she unsheathed it, the blade had gone from red to gold.

Pyrrha raced towards Raven, using her Semblance to boost her attacks, but Raven simply sidestepped and struck her with her blade.

Several more attempts on Pyrrha's behalf and each move was battered to the side, ducked under or simply avoided my Raven.

Bringing her leg up, Raven landed a harsh kick to the side of Pyrrha's head, knocking her to the floor.

"Had enough yet?" Raven taunted, slapping Pyrrha's face with her blade.

"Not yet," Pyrrha grunted, forcing herself back onto her feet.

I needed to get up right now. Pyrrha wouldn't be able to fight Raven for long. She had the potential to grow much stronger, but was lacking the experience needed to be an actual threat.

Rolling onto my stomach, I slowly inched my way towards my sword which lay on the ground in front of me.

"Where do you think you're going?" Vernal asked. "The only reason why you're alive is because Raven is having too much fun toying with little miss perfect over there. Maybe I should fix that."

"Over my dead body, girly," Maria growled, limping into the ruined camp.

"You've already got one foot in the grave," Vernal smirked. "This is going to be easy."

Crawling over to my sword, I clenched the handle and pushed myself up, almost overbalancing when I was finally standing. This situation was bad. My Aura currently being used to fix the leftover damage from Raven's lightning. I could barely stand with all this electricity in my body, my muscles were twitching too much.

I wasn't going to be of much help to anyone, unless… Breathing Techniques were still available to me, but using them would now exhaust my body instead of my Aura. There was one technique that I'd been planning on recreating, but hadn't as there wasn't enough space in Argus.

Taking a slow deep breath, I began to focus on the various twitches and spasms of my muscles, except this time, instead of trying to suppress them, I began to increase them. The air began to vibrate around my body as I prepared myself to use one last technique.

Ping!

A new technique has been created.

"Sun Breathing: Flash, Godspeed"
-2000 AP

Warning, you are attempting to use a Sun Breathing technique without Aura. If this is done, the recoil of the technique will be transferred to your body instead.

Taking another slow breath, I aimed myself at Raven. Tensing my body, I finally unleashed the built up strength in my legs and rushed towards Raven with blinding speed.

"Sun Breathing: Flash, Godspeed"

Reaching Raven, my blade made contact with her body. The world began to blur as I continued on into the woods, Raven's body carried on my sword as I attempted to cut her Aura. The sound barrier had long abandoned its struggle keep up with us.

Trees, rocks, wildlife all passed us by. Raven attempted to struggle, but we were going too fast for her to fully understand what was happening.

Feeling pain in my legs, I winced and began to slow down. Throwing Raven into a cliff, shattering the rocks around her. There was a loud crack as we stopped. It seemed sound had finally caught up.

Taking a breath, I leaned over breathing heavily and placed my hands on my knees. My shoes were melted, my pants were ripped in several locations and my legs were bloodied from the massive strain that had been put on them.

Several large boulders shifted as Raven pulled herself out of the cliff I'd embedded her in. I wouldn't be able to continue on anymore, my body had been too damaged. My legs felt numb and were difficult to stand on. It was taking everything I had to make sure I didn't accidentally fall over right now.

"What… was that?!" Raven asked, bewildered. Her Grimm mask seemed to have fallen off, either during our trip here or when she climbed out of the cliff.

Several plans flashed through my mind on what to do next. I couldn't beat her by fighting her, but I did have a few ideas that could chase her off. Unfortunately, my best option right now was going to hurt a lot.

"That? Just a taste of true speed," I replied offhandedly. "You, Raven, really are quite a handful, making me use that on you."

Raven watched me cautiously. "What is this?"

I stepped to the side, ignoring the pain in my legs. "What do you mean? This is what it's always been. You surviving so that you may live another day to cower in the shadows."

I took slow, controlled breaths, making my nerves reach to every part of my body, feeling for my organs specifically and the muscles surrounding them.

"You know nothing," Raven hissed.

"I know plenty," I smiled. "And I can see the fear inside you. You're afraid, petrified even, but instead of actually confronting that fear or doing anything about it, you hide away and make others afraid of you so that you may feel better about yourself. You're nothing but a coward."

"SHUT UP!" Raven roared as she rushed forward, piercing her sword through my chest, pinning me to a tree.

Latching onto her head, I pulled her closer and linked our lips before rapidly exhaling my full breath into her lungs. Raven's eyes widened and she stumbled back, coughing up blood violently.

Aura may make the body stronger and protect it from external injuries, but there were still a few things that could bypass it. I'd learned that when I fought Pyrrha during the Mistral Regional Tournament and ended up pulling a muscle in my ass.

Raven would survive this. Her Aura would heal her wounds, but for now it played into the image I was trying to craft.

Grabbing her blade, I winced slightly as I pulled it out of my chest and relaxed the muscles I'd been using to force my heart and lungs out of the way. It had been a gamble, she could have tried to cut me elsewhere, but she'd been intent on stabbing me in the heart earlier.

"Did you really think you would be capable of killing me?" I asked, stepping in front of her. "You know, I find you bandits quite disgusting. You go to peaceful towns that aren't able to defend themselves and attack, taking what you want, uncaring of the lives you ruin. Well, I'm going to be making sure that there are no more bandits out there to hurt others."

Raven's face displayed only fear as she stared at the stab wound in my chest, a look that I hated, but felt was necessary. I couldn't beat Raven, but I could scare the living hell out of her. "What… are you?"

"Your end," I replied. Palming Raven's sword, I dropped it at her feet. "Pick it up."

Raven's eyes widened as she stared at the sword, before looking toward me. She began to breathe heavily before turning and running. Transforming into a bird, she quickly flew away.

Sighing, I picked up Raven's sword and slowly began to make my way back to camp. I felt a little bad. Tricking Raven into thinking that I was some kind of immortal that wanted to kill her did end up working, but the feeling of inspiring fear wasn't exactly a good one. Then again, she was a bandit that killed numerous people and ruined lives.

Sadly that didn't make me feel any better. Instead, I decided on focusing on following the broken trees and torn up ground. It's like Maria said. There is a time to deal with all of this and it wasn't now.

Surprise Raven attack. Coal gets to play the destroyer of worlds and ends up scaring the crap out of Raven.

Anyways, I'm up to chapter 22 on the P word website.

I go by the name of ThatKircguy. Just copy the name and paste it in the Patty Rio On search bar. It'd help me out immensely, but don't worry if that's not your style. I will be uploading weekly, so it's not going to be stuck there permanently.

Also, I post my original stuff there as well. It's nothing much, just two short stories for now, but I'll post more as I write them.

The next chapter will be posted on the 26th of August.
Until then everyone.
