D4 F: Callista Fairwater

Age: 17

Tw. Misogyny, Sexism, and Suicide Attempt

. . .

Callista looked at Nathan Shore's cocky and pleased face as the crowd was cheering and made a split-second decision. "I volunteer as tribute." Nathan was going to die even if it was the last thing she did.

Callista was going to make Nathan suffer, and she was going to make sure the whole world would see Nathan fail miserably. No, Nathan wouldn't gain any glory, riches, or fame after breaking her family. Not while Callista would be remembered as a girl with loose morals and easily spread legs.

At one point, Callista truly loved Nathan with his charming smile and sky-blue eyes. Callista even imagined a future with him, but Nathan wanted more. Begged for the passion he saw in her eyes, but she was in love, not stupid, and she would not have ruined her future, or her sister's, for Nathan. Not that it mattered because Ilia was content to do that for the both of them.

She did not believe it initially, ignoring the whispers, but then she heard those damming rumours. The rumour is that she was so easy and used up that Nathan got bored and conquered the other Fairwater sister. Her Pa and his friends came to their place for a drink, and Ilia was caught in a compromising position, naked with Nathan.

When she first heard overheard the rumour, she almost strangled the sod who was gossiping with his friends. But even under the threat of death, he swore it was true. So Callista ran home, and there she saw her Pa, who was always so strong with his head in his hands; she knew the truth.

Her Pa couldn't look at her in the eyes anymore. Then, her Pa told her that Nathan wouldn't even consider marrying Ilia, that he would never marry such a desperate whore.

They were ruined; her Pa worked so hard to give them a promising future, and now they were permanently tarred. She didn't even get to see Ilia after that night; her Pa kicked her out. To persevere some chance, she would be able to marry well. It did not work, though; she had enough when she found out her Pa was fired for lacking discipline. She found Nathan and exploded, airing all their dirty laundry.

After that, people may been calling her a seductress, tease and prude, but they also started calling Nathan, untrustworthy, scheming and playboy. Those things didn't do much, but it still meant that no one wanted Nathan around their daughters, sisters, and wives.

Though, no matter what, it did stop the fact that they couldn't get employed, and she had no future. After all, she was the one who invited misfortune into the home. She is the one who denied him after leading him on, so really, she was at fault for everything that happened.

As time passed and the money that should have been her dowery dwindled, she could see her Pa starting to hate her and love his drink more. That night, as the moon was at its highest, she walked into the ocean waves, fully intent on joining them, only to be yanked back from the currents by Annie Cresta.

Annie, District 4 most recent winner, was yelling at a name she didn't recognize, begging for them to keep swimming. Before she knew it, both she and Annie were being dragged into shore by one Finnick Odar and Riptide Greca, the 54th Victor of the Hunger Games.

Everything was hazy after that, but they gave her hope. That first meeting with the Victors of 4 was blurry. But, it ended with her spilling everything and making a deal; when she was 18, should volunteer for the 76th Hunger Games. Riptide would be her trainer, and she would get a weekly stipend that was enough to support her and her dad.

Callista had no future, and they all knew it, but they gave her a chance to fight for one. After she won, nobody could say anything about her and her family, and even if she died, she was promised that her father would be taken care of. After all, District 4 had no place for a loose woman, but they did have a place for a victor.

So when Callista saw him try to take hold of her future, to even imagine having to see his face for the rest of her life, she refused. Callista wasn't just going to kill Nathan Shore; she would make sure he begged for death.

Callista was never going to let Nathan forget what he did; to escape her, he would die as nothing more than a footnote in her story. As she walked towards the stage, the crowd was going wild; she locked eyes with Nathan and took pleasure in seeing his surprise and rage.

Ariella, the District 4 escort, cheered and said, "While aren't our tributes eager this year? What is your name?"

"Callista Fairwater, and I am afraid Nathan dearest won't be winning these games, even if I have to kill him myself."

No, Nathan would not be winning; if she had her way, he would have a humbling death in the bloodbath, and shame would be brought to his prestigious family. After she won, he would be a part of history District 4 would want to forget. A mark of shame and embarrassment, Nathan Shore would become nothing. A long forgotten name, discarded and shunned from being spoken about.

Nathan Shore would have no satisfaction, even in death. Once she was done with her performance, nobody would think about him, let alone acknowledge him. Callista knew from the time before that the only thing Nathan wanted was to be remembered simply as his own person instead of an extension of anyone else.

Nathan wanted to be loved for being Nathan, and she would do anything, even die, to make sure his dearest wish would forever go unanswered and forgotten. Nathan would suffer, if it was the last thing she ever did.
