"Careful, Agent, we do not know what kind of booby traps dey haf left for us to find." Murdock warned Face as they sneaked through Vito Castellano's office.
It was 11:16, and the two of them had just managed to get into Castellano's office without being seen by way of the window, which they had used a special device to cut through the glass and open it from the inside. Murdock watched his friend—comrade—approach the wall behind the large desk in the room and knock on several places until he found what he was looking for.
"This must be where the conveyer belt is that carried Amy's money down to the saferoom. That means the door leading there would be…" Face trailed off as he considered the room around him. Murdock walked to the wall a few feet to the right of Face—a slightly angled corner separating the two walls—and knocked on it, hearing exactly the sound he was hoping for.
"Face." He was answered with a nod as Face strode over to him and opened the small black bag he was carrying, another much larger black duffle bag hung over his shoulder. Murdock had a similar looking one hanging off of his own shoulder as they had had to pack several larger things as precautions with the possible dangers awaiting them beyond the wall.
While Face searched his bag for the correct tools that he needed, Murdock began searching through the large desk a few yards away from the wall. After searching several drawers, he found what he was looking for—one of the smaller metal boxes used for transporting goods down to the saferoom. He searched through his own bag and pulled out the grenade full of knockout gas they had packed earlier.
Using a small thin wire, he connected the latch of the metal box with the grenade so whoever opened it next would get a nice long nap. Murdock closed the box and pressed the button on the desk to open the compartment. As he set the box on the conveyer belt and sent it away, he broke character from his Russian superspy for a moment to wave goodbye to it cheerfully.
"Murdock, I think I got it! Come here and push this for me, will ya?" Face piped up from his silent work on cracking the hidden door open, and Murdock nodded, striding over to help his companion.
"Da." The two of them pushed on respective parts of the wall, and it finally gave way, a door opening up before them into a dark hallway. "After you, comrade." Murdock gestured for his friend to move forward, and Face did so, but stopped a few steps into the hallway before backing out and looking at Murdock.
"No no, after you." He smiled sarcastically at Murdock, who looked a little affronted, but moved forward anyway.
As soon as the two of them were in the hallway, automatic lights turned on, illuminating a camera looking down at them from above.
"Dat is probably for when de boss comes, to shut down all de security measures for him to get through safely. Unfortunately, de men on de other end of thees camera are currently sleeping on de job, so we must get in on our own." Face answered Murdock with a nervous grunt and the two of them began walking cautiously down the hallway.
"Uh, Murdock, do you have to check around the corner like that?" Face asked as they got to the first corner and Murdock put his back to the wall and ever so slightly leaned his head out to peer around the corner.
"Agent, we must be wery cautious as we proceed, or we could be de next people sleeping. Permanently." Murdock let his Russian accented words out slowly and deliberately, watching Face as he glanced behind them and spoke to himself,
"Why did I have to be the one to get stuck with you again?" He walked around the corner, but stopped in his tracks, Murdock right behind him. The flooring for the rest of the hallway till the next turn was metal grating with small circular holes all over it.
"Looks like we found our electric floor." Face turned to look at Murdock, who reached into his pocket and pulled out an old piece of candy, gently throwing it onto the grating. As soon as it hit the metal, it sparked and sizzled, causing a little explosion right where it landed. Murdock looked up at Face with buggy eyes, and Face just repeated himself, "Yep. That's definitely it."
"Courage, Faceman, Courage." Murdock solemnly patted his comrade on the shoulder and knelt down to open his duffle bag. He and Face then proceeded to empty the bag of its contents, three deflated rubber rafts. They rolled them out, and triggered the attached CO2 cans to begin filling them. After a minute of waiting, Murdock kicked the first inflated raft out over the grating, and Face shoved the second behind it.
They pushed the third over it as well, and Murdock heard Face mutter another complaint under his breath as they finished pushing and found that they had a yard or so of grating that they would have to jump over to get to the rubber rafts.
Giving Face a devilish smile, Murdock whispered, "Together, Tovarich?"
"Ah, well, I think yo—" Murdock just grabbed his shoulder, and propelled the two of them forward. Face made a sort of strangled yell as they cleared the grating and ran haphazardly across the three rafts, ending on the other end of the hall a few breathless moments later. Murdock's hand was still grasping Face's shoulder, and Face angrily slapped the hand off, hissing,
"What the heck did you do that for!?" He looked back down the hallway before glaring at Murdock, "We could've died! I could have died!"
"We all haf to make sacrifices for war, Comrade." Murdock saluted and then turned to sneakily peek around the next corner, and Face had no choice but to shoulder his duffle bag and follow, though Murdock heard him give a very annoyed huff.
Around the next corner, they found a thin, barely single file staircase with large gaps of height between each step and thin railings on each side for balance. Murdock knelt on one knee at the top of the staircase and began examining the railings, and Face knelt down next to him.
"Uh, what exactly are you looking for here, Murdock?" He only received a sharp look from the crazy man, and he amended his previous statement, "Er, Agent—Karian?"
"Kuryakin." Murdock frowned at him for a moment, and then continued, "You see thees railings?" he pointed his finger at the end of the railing next to him, "They are wired through and through. Not electricity, thees time, but pressure."
"So we can't touch the railings."
"Da. If we do…" He made an explosion sound and motion with his hands.
"Right." Face made a pained expression as Murdock stood up wordlessly and nodded down at the still kneeling man, turning purposefully toward the extremely narrow staircase.
He began the short and perilous trip down the flight of stairs, and about halfway down he nearly lost his balance. Face made a sort of unmanly squeak behind him, but he regained it without touching the railings, and finished the last few large steps down.
Murdock turned around and looked up at Face with a bright and out of character smile before resuming his superspy persona. "You better toss dat bag down to me now so you don't haf to come down weeth eet."Face nodded to his crazy counterpart and threw down the duffle bag before making his own terrifying trip down the staircase to join Murdock.
"Ah, what next?" The two of them smiled at one another and continued on, their remaining duffle bag hanging over Murdock's shoulder.
At the bottom of the staircase and down the hallway, they came to an open doorway. Through it was a metal room with frosted walls and a large black pole in the center of it. Sticking his hand into the room ever so slightly, Face grimaced and commented,
"It's freezing in there. That has to mean something."
"Da." Murdock gave a short answer and the two of them stood together and stared into the ice box of a room before them, pondering their options.
"I bet the room is sensitive to body heat—that's probably why it's set to be so cold, so that when a person passes through, that sensor there will notice and trigger an alarm or something worse." Face turned to Murdock with his thought, and Murdock supplied,
"We just need something to keep de sensor cold while we pass through."
Murdock watched as Face took one of his hands out of his pocket and gestured towards the sensor. "There is that CO2 we used to fill the rafts with—if we spray it on the sensor, it'll freeze it long enough for us to get through."
"Perfect, Comrade, go get de leftover cans from de other room while I scope out where de sensor ees on de pole." Face made to argue, but after several angry noises were all that came from his mouth, he just threw his hands up in the air exasperatedly and headed back to the staircase.
A minute later, Face was back with a can of CO2 and an extremely relieved expression at having made it past the staircase again. Murdock went to take it from him, but Face pulled away with an annoyed look.
"I think I can do this myself, thank you." He walked forward and sprayed the temperature meter as he muttered to himself, "I did everything else by myself."
Murdock picked up the duffle bag and followed Face into the below freezing room, asking, "What time ees it, Agent?" Face glanced at his watch as the two of them proceeded through the room,
"11:54—we better hurry. We need to get in there before BA makes it to the outside and electrocutes himself."
"I follow your lead, Commander."
They both walked through the doorway into the next room as Face muttered, "Of course, Now I'm the one in charge." As soon as the two of them had cleared the doorway, they could see past their small room and through the next doorway was what looked like the saferoom. "Oh, good, we finally made it—"
As if taunting the con man's relief, the two doorways of the small room they had entered slid shut, sealing the two of them in.
"What?!" Murdock heard Face exclaim as the two of them spun around, warily searching the room for answers. He then spotted a digital timer attached to the door to the saferoom that had just started counting down from seven minutes.
"Hey, Faceman, look at this." He called his friend over to him, and the two of them examined the timer that was getting closer to six minutes. "Must be some kinda visitor's quarantine, so the bad guys can doublecheck the people who come through." He dropped his Russian persona as the reality of the situation sank in.
"Seven minutes? We can't wait that long! It's—" Face checked his watch, "11:56! BA's gonna be toast if we can't get through to flip that switch!" He frantically searched the room again as Murdock dropped to the floor, unzipping his duffle bag and looking for something—anything that could help them.
For all their arguing, BA was still one of his best friends, and neither He nor Face was going to sit for six more minutes while their friend electrocuted himself.
OOF. Into the fray we go...
I only own myself and my lousy ideas.
We'll see when I get around to updating it!
