What's in a Name?
"What do you think of Evelyn?"
At the sound of Neil's voice beside her, Eva was abruptly jerked out of her light dozing. She lifted her head from her pillow and gave her husband a frown. "Evelyn?" she repeated. "It's a nice name, but—"
"There's no 'but' about it," Neil interrupted, beaming at Eva from where he sat on his side of their bed. "Evelyn's the perfect name for the baby! 'Eve' for you and 'lyn' for my mom—what could be better?"
"Neil," Eva chided, her frown deepening as she placed her left hand on her growing stomach. "We're not naming our daughter after me and your mother."
Neil's smile faded slightly. "Aw, c'mon, Eva. You just said Evelyn's a nice name."
"It is, but that doesn't mean we should put so much pressure on the baby."
"Whaddya mean?" Neil asked, his brows now furrowing in confusion.
"Neil, think about it," Eva snapped, waving her right hand exasperatedly. "I'm a memory traversal agent, and your mom helped build the memory machine in the first place. Naming our daughter Evelyn would just make her feel like she has to be as successful as her mom and grandmother."
"Eva, she's our kid," Neil pointed out. "I'd think she'd be successful no matter what."
"Of course she would," Eva agreed, "but naming her after me and your mom? That's a lot of expectations to put on a little girl."
"Evelyn's still pretty," he insisted, placing his own hand over Eva's left. With another smile, he added, "Besides, don't you think it'd be cute to have an Eva and an Evie under the same roof?"
"There are plenty of other names that are just as pretty and cute."
"Oh, really? Name one."
"Grace," Eva said at once, smiling herself. For the past week, ever since she and Neil learned they were having a girl, "Grace" felt like the right name for her baby—simple without being too ordinary and sweet without being too cloying. And it had the added benefit of being a name that would be all their daughter's own, which was what she deserved.
Upon hearing Eva's suggestion, Neil's smile gave way to a thoughtful frown. "Well," he said slowly, removing his hand from atop hers, "that is a good name, but can we at least have Evelyn as her middle name?"
Eva grimaced. "Grace Evelyn? I don't know about that."
Neil snorted. "Now you're just being stubborn."
"And you're not?"
"I'm allowed to want the best name for my daughter."
"You only think Evelyn's the best name because you're obsessed with combining my name with your mom's."
"There's nothing wrong with honoring the two most awesome women I ever knew."
Despite herself, Eva's heart warmed upon hearing that—Neil might have been being biased, but it was still no empty flattery. Even so, her only reply was, "That doesn't mean we need to be so on-the-nose about naming the baby. What about honoring you with her middle name?"
Neil's eyebrows nearly disappeared into his hairline as he stared at Eva in disbelief. "Neilina? Are you joking? You don't want Evelyn as any part of her name but Neilina is just fine?"
Eva groaned, rolling her eyes. "Corncobs, Neil, I wasn't talking about Neilina. I was talking about Noelle."
"Oh, okay." Neil then frowned again. "But Noelle means 'Christmas,' right? The baby's due in February. And we really, really don't want her to come two months early."
"Noelle is still a winter name," Eva reminded him with a half-shrug. "Besides, it has three letters in common with yours. That's good enough for me."
Neil hummed, laying himself down in bed and resting his head on his pillow. "Well, if we're gonna name her after me in spirit, there are worse ways to go about it."
"Wow, what a winning endorsement," Eva said dryly.
"I'm just saying," he answered, "better Noelle than, I dunno, Nellie."
She winced at that, all sarcasm abandoned. Wasn't there a fictional spider named Nellie? "Yeah, no, Nellie just sounds...no."
A moment of silence passed, and Eva resettled her head on her pillow and closed her eyes. She was on the verge of drifting off again when Neil spoke up.
"Evelyn Rose isn't off the table, is it?"
"What did I just say about being on-the-nose?" Eva asked irritably without even bothering to open her eyes.
"...Shutting up now."
"Good answer," was all she said before resuming going to sleep.
