Chapter 10 - The Turning Point
~ Harmony's P.O.V. ~
"Why are you here, Logan?" Aunt Jenna asked.
"I missed you," Logan said making me scoff, "I was out of town. I-"
"Yeah. I got that email," Aunt Jenna said.
"You got an email?" Logan asked a bit confused.
"You didn't send an email?" Aunt Jenna said.
"I can explain. Just invite me in and I'll explain everything," Logan said making me shiver in fear.
"Don't do it, Aunt Jenna. Don't invite a vampire into our house," I whispered to myself forgetting about vampire hearing until Logan's eyes landed on me.
"I'm not going to invite you in. Forget it," Aunt Jenna said gaining his attention back to her.
"Come on, Jenna. It's me," Logan said.
"Or what's left of you," I whispered.
"The answers no," Aunt Jenna said.
"I know you," Logan said, "You're always one step from a maybe, and a tiny nudge to yes."
"Heh. You just pointed out that I have no self-control," Aunt Jenna said, "Clever strategy."
Aunt Jenna closed the door and I went back to my room.
~ THE NEXT DAY ~
~ Jeremy's P.O.V. ~
"I live in fear. It consumes me," I read, "In the early evening when the sun begins to fade, the fear comes. Because I know that the night brings death."
After reading a few pages, I saw an old sketch and it gave me the feeling to start drawing again. I grabbed my materials and began to draw the old drawing that my ancestor drew. Little did I know that Elena was watching me.
~ Harmony's P.O.V. ~
I had just given Aunt Jenna her lunch for the day, as Elena came down the stairs.
"Jeremy's got his sketchbook out," Elena told us.
"Your kidding," Aunt Jenna said.
"Nope. But don't say a word," Elena said, "The minute we encourage him. He'll put it away."
"Psychology major. Check that out," Aunt Jenna said.
Aunt Jenna and I noticed the sad look on Elena's face as she put her phone down after checking it.
"You and Stefan?" Aunt Jenna asked, "Update?"
"He knows how I feel and where I stand, and I know where he stands but it doesn't matter. He's leaving. Moving away," Elena said making me feel a bit bad for being happy he was leaving.
"Where's he going?" Aunt Jenna asked.
"I stopped asking questions," Elena replied after I passed her her lunch. I opened the door. "The answers get scary," she said.
I left Jeremy's lunch by the door, and we left the house.
"Yours leaves. Mine returns," Aunt Jenna said.
"Logan?!" Elena asked surprised.
"He's back," Aunt Jenna said.
"Ugh," Elena replied.
"I didn't let him past the front door," Aunt Jenna said making me nod.
"I hope you slammed it in his face," Elena said making me giggle.
"A medium slam," Aunt Jenna said.
"Three strike rule, Jenna," Elena said.
"You're not even allowed to watch the news," I continued for Elena.
"Exactly. No more, Logan 'Scum' Fell," Aunt Jenna said.
~ AT SCHOOL ~
I separated from Elena and Bonnie to head to my first class. I needed to ask my teacher a question.
~ Elena's P.O.V. ~
"Did I miss something?" I asked as Bonnie and I saw Matt with Caroline.
"They've been hanging out," Bonnie said.
"Kind of weird don't ya think?" I said.
"She needs someone nice, like him. As opposed to a homicidal vampire like Damon," Bonnie said.
"Yeah. How are you doing with all that?" I asked her.
"I'm freaked out. Damon attacked me. I could be dead right now," Bonnie said, "But I'm also grateful. To Stefan. He saved my life and- Have you seen him?"
"Not since he told me he was leaving," I told Bonnie as we got to my locker, "For all I know, he's already gone."
"He wouldn't leave without saying goodbye," Bonnie said.
"Yes, he would. He thinks he's protecting me. A clean break and all that," I said.
"So, what are you gonna do?" Bonnie said.
"What am I supposed to do? I already told him not to go. If I ask again. I'm being selfish. It is what it is," I said.
"Well, maybe it's for the best?" Bonnie said.
"What? Why?" I asked her.
"I mean, what kind of future could you have with him? Even if he stayed?" Bonnie said.
Just then, a banner that said 'The Promise of YOUR Future'. I looked at Bonnie.
"Did you just-" I started to ask.
"That wasn't me. I swear," Bonnie said.
We then headed for class.
"Have you told your family about all this?" Bonnie asked.
"No, and I don't plan too. I don't want them involved," I told her.
~ LATER THAT DAY ~
~ Jeremy's P.O.V. ~
I was finishing up my drawing when Aunt Jenna walked into the living room.
"Hey, what do you think?" I said showing her my drawing.
"Creepy," Jenna said.
"I found this old journal in my dad's stuff. Jonathan Gilbert from the 1800s," I said, "He's kind of a freak show. He wrote about demons and all these people getting slaughtered and-"
"Yeah, he was a writer," Jenna said, "Short stories. Horror stuff."
"Oh, he wrote fiction?" I asked, "Figured he was just a lunatic or a drunk."
Jenna passed me a book.
"Well, he was a Gilbert. Probably a little of both," Jenna said.
I laughed a bit, and as she left my smile faded when I thought back to my twin who told me a bunch of crazy stuff. Maybe she inherited the Gilbert crazy from our ancestor.
~ Harmony's P.O.V. ~
I stayed after school to practice my cello, and since the College Fair/Career Day was starting in a bit I decided to stay longer. I was looking through the tables of different careers until I stopped at the Julliard table. I signed my name on the list of students interested in an audition for my senior year and went to look around some more. You always need a backup plan right? I was around a corner and saw Caroline show her mom, that she wanted to work in Broadcast Journalism. I walked up to the two.
"Broadcast Journalism?" I heard the Sheriff say.
"Yes, Broadcast Journalism," Caroline smiled at her mom.
"I think it will suit you, Caroline," I said surprising the two of them, "Don't you agree, Mrs. Forbes?"
Caroline and I looked at the Sheriff.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Caroline asked her mother.
"You don't even read the newspaper," Sheriff Forbes tried saying nicely.
Caroline gave her a face as she walked away. I turned to look at the Sheriff.
"There's more to this career than just the news, Mrs. Forbes. Broadcast Journalism has sports, weather, music, and many other things. I think you should really support Caroline in her choice. It is her future after all. However, you can tell her to have a backup plan just in case. For example, I signed up for an audition for Julliard. If that doesn't work, I might consider being a dance instructor or a music teacher. Maybe even a college professor. Just consider it," I told the Sheriff.
It looked like she was going to say something, but didn't have a chance as Logan appeared.
"Liz," Logan called out.
Sheriff Forbes turned around and when she noticed it was Logan she reached for her gun. Then she looked at me and pushed me behind her.
"What are you going to do? Stake me?" Logan said before looking at me, "Hello, Harmony."
Sheriff Forbes glanced at me and said, "Harmony, go and find Caroline and stay with her."
I nodded and with one last look at Logan, I left.
~ Sheriff Forbes' P.O.V. ~
'This can't be happening?' I thought.
"What are going to do? Bury me in another shallow grave?" Logan said, "What would the email say this time?"
"I didn't have a choice," I told him.
"You b****h. I died for you. For this town. You've known me since I was 6, and you swept me under the rug like dirt," Logan told me and I felt my eyes water a bit.
"You knew what you were getting yourself into," I told him.
"I was one of you," Logan said.
"And now you're one of them," I said standing my ground.
Logan whispered in my ear before leaving, "Watch your back, Sheriff."
I pulled out my phone when he left.
"Get a backup team to the school immediately," I told my deputy, "Keep it within the circle. It's a V5."
~ Harmony's P.O.V. ~
I managed to find Caroline, and I waited with her as Bonnie was going to pick her up.
"Bonnie, where are you? I'm ready to go. I'll be outside," Caroline said on the phone.
"Caroline, why don't we wait inside. It's dark out here," I told her trying to remain calm as I scanned the area.
"No, it's fine. I already told Bonnie I'll be outside," Caroline said as a car pulled up in front of us.
"Hey," the hair on the back of my neck stood up seeing who it was, "Damsel in distress. Need a ride?"
"Oh my god. Logan Fell, Channel 9, is that you?" Caroline said in shock.
"I used to babysit you, Caroline Forbes, don't mock me," Logan said making me grabbing Caroline's jacket.
"Well, I was supposed to go home with Bonnie," Caroline said, "But I can't find her."
"She's on her way, Caroline," I said, "We can wait."
"It's not a problem, really," Logan said, "It's on my way."
"We already have a ride, thank you, Mr. Fell," I tried saying.
"Okay," Caroline said.
"What? Caroline, we have to wait for Bonnie," I told her.
"You need to relax, Harmony. He can take you home too. Get in here," Caroline said.
"I don't want too," I told Caroline.
"I insist," Logan said.
I looked around and saw Matty. I noticed him staring at our direction, and gave him a pleading look that told him to get Mrs. Forbes. He nodded as got in the car. I quickly called Matt on my phone without Logan noticing, knowing he would be able to hear what was happening.
"You know it's fate," Caroline said to Logan.
"Why's that?" Logan said.
"I'm into broadcast journalism," Caroline said, "So, can I ask you a couple of questions?"
"Anything you want," Logan said, "First, buckle up."
Caroline went to buckle her seatbelt when Logan smashed her head on the car window, knocking her out. Blood was on the window. I gasped and Logan punched me in the face and knocked me out. All I could hope was Matty getting the Sheriff.
~ Elena's P.O.V. `
"Hey, have you seen Logan Fell, the news guy?" I asked Matt as he passed us.
"Yeah, he gave Caroline and Harmony a ride home," Matt said. His expression was one of worry, "I need to let her mom know."
"Okay," I said as he left. I turned to Stefan. "Stefan-"
"Stay here," Stefan said before leaving.
~ Sheriff Forbes' P.O.V. ~
Matt had just told me that Caroline and Harmony went home with Logan Fell. I got in my car and went out to look for them. I know Caroline doesn't know about the supernatural, so she was just naive enough to get in his car. However, I have the feeling Harmony knows more than she lets on and went with Caroline to try and protect her. God how could I have let this happen. Just then, my phone rang.
"Where are you?" I said answering my phone.
"Your daughter has expressed an interest in journalism. I think it's important to foster young minds, and young Harmony here is a diamond in the rough," Logan said.
"What do you want?" I asked Logan.
"The satisfaction of turning Harmony and your daughter into vampires," Logan said.
Suddenly, I heard the car screech into a stop and noises in the background.
"Logan what happened?! Logan!" I called out worried about the two young girls.
"Sheriff, it's Damon," I heard Damon say on the phone.
"Where are the girls?" I asked.
"They're okay. I'm on Elm street," Damon said before hanging up and I sped my way to Elm street.
I made it in time to see Logan throw Damon to the truck, and ran to him.
"Where are they?" I said.
"They're okay," Damon said making me sigh in relief, "My brother is taking them home. I'm sorry, Sheriff. I just wasn't strong enough."
"Damn it," I whispered.
~ Elena's P.O.V. ~
Stefan found me and told me he found Harmony and Caroline and that they were okay.
"All they remember is that Logan attacked them and that's it," Stefan told me.
"And Logan?" I asked.
"Damon is dealing with him," Stefan said.
"As in-" I asked and Stefan nodded.
"You saw what happened tonight, right? I mean, you understand why we can't be together? You see?" Stefan said to me.
"Yeah, I'm starting to see a lot of things Stefan," I told him, "Come on. I'll give you a ride."
"Uh, I can get home," Stefan said.
"I know," I said to him.
"Alright. That would be nice," Stefan said.
We got to the Boarding House and argued a bit more before I told him that he can't make decisions for me and that I love him. That night, was the first night we made love. It was epic.
~ No One's P.O.V. ~
Alaric killed Logan Fell, and Tyler accepted Matt liking Caroline. Sheriff Forbes got to check how Caroline was before being called back to work, and Elena finally realized that she looks exactly like Katherine and left in tears. The Sheriff calls Damon to thank him for killing Logan, but Damon is surprised at the news himself. Elena got into a car crash, on her way home.
