SUNRISE
The year is 2007,
What happens after all the drama at the end of Breaking Dawn? Renesmee's growth has now slowed to now match that of a human child's growth. Bella can't seem to stand even being in the same room as her daughter, she keeps begging Edward to leave. To Go. To Travel.
It is also time for the family to move on to avoid detection.
How will all this affect Jacob Black and his imprinting on young Renesmee.
Will the imprint hold?
And why would a female shift, is there more to the lone she wolf than meets the eyes?
I have also upped Quil's imprint Claire's age to 4.
This story isn't for Bella lovers. I've always felt like she was spoiled and self-absorbed, she didn't care how much her closeness to Jacob hurt Edward and at the time hurt Jacob. She wanted to become a vampire, knowing she could slip and kill humans eventually. She pushed and pushed, rejecting Edwards pleas to just give him five years. So yeah this story isn't a Bella love story at all.
As I was writing this story took a turn I hadn't expected, so its now also a Leah redemption story.
Also please note that Renessme's full name is Renessme Elizabeth Cullen.
'Words like this are thoughts Edward's hearing.'
I Don't own anything. If I did I wouldn't be posting it here.
Edward POV:
While we were grateful for all our friends and ally's help the past few days we were more grateful when they decided to head back to their own homes. None of us enjoyed having so many red eyed vampires around, knowing that they will feed somewhere. Even if it weren't in our territory, even if we had kept Forks safe, there were others who wouldn't be so lucky. The most reluctant to leave was Nahuel, not necessarily because of Renesmee. His reluctance was mainly because he envied that she had me, her father. His own father wasn't a father to him, his own father knew birthing Nahuel would kill his mother, and he let her die anyways. Then didn't even bother to show up into Nahuel's life for nearly 14 years until he looked fully grown, it was the love of his aunt that helped him become a good man. I could tell in his thoughts he'd be back. Not sure when, but he would eventually come back. But at least he's started on our diet while here, and maybe he'll keep it up, especially if he plans to come back.
"Renesmee, it's getting late let's get you into bed" I say. We had decided to stay at the main house tonight, gave the excuse that we wanted to make sure it was safe before going back to our cabin. But the truth was I would be meeting with Billy Black and Sam to speak about Jacob and Bella was going to go off with Alice and Rose for the night.
In just a few days Jacob will turn 17, still a minor and way too young to be dealing with so many adult responsibilities, just like the rest of the shifters, they should have been allowed to enjoy their teen years. 'Good night daddy' Renesmee says using her preferred way to communication and touching my face. "Good night My Princess." I say as I leave. I don't even have to take a step out of her room to hear Jacob's thoughts, he's always so close, never leaving, his mind mostly consumed with thoughts of making sure Renesmee is safe and happy at all times. He can't tell her no, no matter what she asks for. How could any wolf look at imprinting as anything worth celebrating is beyond me.
That's the problem with me hearing the thoughts of others. When the wolves showed up to attack right after Renesmee was born, I was reluctant to hurt them telling Jasper and Alice "Remember to hold back some strength, they're just children." The oldest being Sam at only 20 years of age. That was almost our downfall as they were truly trying to kill us and we stayed on the defense and just tried to push them back. Though my ability has come in handy and possibly is the reason Jacob Black wasn't killed the moment he imprinted on my child. I knew from his thoughts that there was no lustful feelings towards her, just a need to make sure she survived and was happy and at that time I welcomed those feelings. We needed all the help we could get, through his imprinting bond Renesmee received the protection from the packs. But now it is becoming something more, something I'm not seeing as healthy. It's an obsession, he doesn't do anything but attend to Renesmee.
"We'll we're heading out." Alice announces with Bella and Rosalie close behind her.
Jacob becomes slightly awkward the moment Renesmee is in her room; though most of the family have been welcoming. It doesn't take long for him to decide to just go to his room. "Yeah I'm gonna sleep too." He mumbles as he heads to his room.
"Carlisle, I have something to do. I'll be back before she wakes." I say as I head out the door. He already knew what I had planned, trying to make sure Jacob didn't find out. We didn't want him to feel like a child, who couldn't make a decision. But at the same time, he's still a minor and hanging around our house all the time couldn't, more like shouldn't be his entire life. Even if Esme did redo one of the guest rooms to make him more comfortable and give him a place to call his own within the main house. Eventually things will have to change and that change was going to have to happen sooner rather than later. People were starting to notice that Carlisle was looking a little young lately.
My trip to the cabin is quick, giving me plenty of time to prepare for my guests. I do one last walk around to make sure the furniture is wide enough for a wheelchair and that the ramp will hold.
I hear their thoughts well before they are even in view of the cabin.
'Why would this vampire want to meet us way out here" Billy Black's thoughts rang out loudly to me as he speaks to Sam. "Sam are you sure there is a cabin out here, we've been driving down this dark bumpy road for over 30 minutes now."
"Billy, I'm sure I've read the directions correctly and I can smell them, it's why the window is down. Should be asking why he would lure just us all the way out here in the first place. Edward made it very clear he didn't want Jacob around for this conversation." Sam replied to Billy as his own thoughts started rolling. 'What if they've decided not to let Jacob near their precious Princess? How long before the separation killed Jacob? Did they just keep him around while they were in danger to make sure the packs would stand with them? Will Jacob end up like Quil?'
I was doing my best to block out his thoughts until he got to the Quil part. I knew some about this pup, Quil Ateara imprinted on the child Claire Young. Last I heard he was also seeing his imprint quite often and acting as her protector and friend. Now as I watch Sam's thoughts, I realize Quil had lost significant weight, his face was vacant as if he was just a shell. As if Sam could tell I wanted to know more his thoughts changed back to trying to stay on the darken dirt road.
'Well… here goes nothing, I guess.' Sam thinks as the car parks and he gets out to assist Billy.
"Mr. Black, Sam welcome to our home. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me." I say in welcome as I open the door. "Please come in, would either of you like something to drink, to eat?"
I can tell by their thoughts they are both reluctant, but they do eventually make their way inside.
'Hmm why would they already have a ramp here' Billy wonders as he is able to get himself inside without any help. 'This door frame is even smooth where I'm not getting caught and look at how wide of a space it's as if they've anticipated me being here.'
"I've tried to make sure you would be comfortable here Mr. Black" I say as we get into the living room. "I know you're both wondering and worried about why I would ask you here so we can skip the pleasantries if you want."
I say already knowing they rather not have idle chit-chat and know the reason they're here. It's not like we're friends or anything. Billy shakes his head at the offered drink and food as Sam digs in, that wolf stomach never turns down food.
"Sam I asked you here because I am trying to fully understand the imprinting bond." I start addressing the young Alpha "Jacob explained some to Bella, back before. Obviously now all he explains is that it's a draw and a need to protect and make her safe and happy. But I wanted to hear from you how much does a wolf have to be near his imprint? I was going to use Quil and Claire as examples, but your thoughts on your way here showed something concerning. What is wrong with Quil, Sam?"
I do my best to block out Sam's thoughts as he tried to think of how best to explain it. 'They're leaving aren't they, this is bad poor Jacob,' His thoughts are practically screaming. "Quil's imprint is Claire she's a regular human girl, just turned 4." Sam says, choosing his words carefully. And fully aware I am reading his thoughts. "Imprinting is this intense pull for us. Through our bond I was able to feel Quil's imprinting of Claire, the need to protect her, to see her happy, just like Jacob has told you about his imprinting on Renesmee." His words are calm but his worried thoughts give him away. 'Quil is only a shell of himself now, ever since Claires' parents decided not to let Quil around. They got it in their head that Claire deserves a normal life. He's been completely cut off from any contact and even threatened by her parents if he attempted to see Clair any time soon.' He's looking straight at me as he says this, almost as if he can't bring himself to say the words out loud, then I start seeing pictures. Quil refusing food, not shifting, not sleeping, dying slowly before their very eyes.
"Are you cutting Jacob out of your lives, are you taking Renesmee away from hom?" Billy practically yells as he starts to shake, if he had been a wolf he would have wolfed out.
"NO." I'm quick to reply, trying to reassure them. "No, I know imprinting isn't anything perverse. But you have to agree that the bond doesn't seem healthy at all. It doesn't seem logical that Jacob has dropped out of school, that he refuses to leave Renesmee's side for even a moment. Even now that the danger is over, even though we've learned that Renesmee has a future. The few times we've convinced him to leave for any amount of time he practically loses his mind. Sam, even you can see this isn't healthy even from an imprint point of view. He's days away from turning 17, he's missed half this school year already. Now he's talking like he doesn't even want to finish high school. He shouldn't have to give up his entire life to sit around and do what? Wait for Renesmee to grow up? To decide if she wants him around? And if she chooses to just want him as a friend? What then?" I keep tuned into their thoughts as I asked my questions, they could tell that I was making sense and I did have valid points. They just weren't sure how to respond.
"Jacob isn't so far behind that he must miss this school year fully. He can catch up by doing online schooling and re-enroll next year for his senior year." I continue as I could tell Billy Black was at a loss at what to do. "We can enroll him into a wonderful online course, when he goes back to school he could just claim he was doing specialized schooling. Mr. Black, he should be spending more time with you, at home. Jacob hasn't thought about it yet but I'm sure Sam has pointed it out to you. It's near the time where my family and I would pack up and move. Carlisle is claiming to be ten years older than he looks, it's starting to draw attention. Bella and I can stay in the area for a few more years with Renesmee. Possibly six or seven more years if we push it, longer if we stay here in the cabin and just avoid the area and people who don't know about our world. But eventually we will have to leave. Especially because Renesmee deserves to have the chance to meet people and to explore the world some. Mr. Black it isn't our intention to take your son from you ever, but we don't have the luxury of staying in any place for too long. Especially with how many there are of us. One or two of us are able to stick in one place longer, but it's also harder as we rely on our family bond to make this life easier."
I attempt to ignore Billy Blacks thoughts as he goes to speak. "Looks like we're all pretty much family now, maybe you should call me Billy instead of Mr. Black especially because we all know you're way older than that face you have. As for what you've said, I did ask Jacob last time he came home to stay. He's worried you'll pack up and disappear if he stays away too long. Though I'm sure with your ability you are already aware of this fear." Billy was right, I had heard Jacobs worries about us disappearing and leaving him behind.
"Mr." I start before getting a look from Billy Black. "Billy we do know all this, I know all this. I've tried to make sure Jacob knows we have no plans of just disappearing. That's why we are here, its why I am talking with you and Sam. Carlisle has accepted a new job in Bellingham, it's way closer than where the family would normally relocate to. But it gives the family a chance to start over somewhere else yet still be able to visit often. Renesmee and I will stay here in this Cabin for the next few years. Then we will have to leave. But during that time Jacob will be able to come and visit. You and Charlie even Sue will be able to visit, even the wolves will be welcomed if they want to. Once we leave you can visit whenever you want all you would need to do is call and we'll send you a plane ticket, or we'll keep this cabin and visit it every few years, we'll just have to make sure no one in town sees us."
"So, you do just pack up and leave every few years?" Sam asks, speaking up. 'How exhausting would it be to just leave everything and restart all the time'
"Yes we leave for new places every few years but we don't always restart as high school kids. Like now Rosalie, Emmett, and Jasper have been in Collage the last year while Alice and myself have just finished high school. We've all been to high school and then collage multiple times. The family has a few favorite homes we keep around, and then individually we all have our own properties." I start to explain pausing as Billy's thoughts interrupt. 'All this makes sense, and we could definitely use Jacob back at the garage, his income was helpful.' Through Billy's thoughts I've realized that financially they've been struggling. Not truly surprising as the economy has gotten more expensive in the last few years. I should have realized sooner how much responsibility was on Jacobs shoulders to not just physically help his father but financially. "Jacob was working at the local garage?" I ask as a way to steer the conversation back on track as it was starting to get late. "Maybe he should be encouraged to get back into the swing of his real life? He can come by and see Renesmee every, what, other day to begin and then maybe start to stretch it to every three or so days, eventually maybe a week?" I ask, looking to Sam to see if this time frame would be good.
"Billy, he's not part of my pack anymore, I can't command him. But he is your son and like Edward has pointed out, he is still a minor." Sam says his thoughts liking the idea that Jacob gets back to being a kid, even just occasionally.
"Even if I agree with this, who's going to get Jacob to actually go along with it?" Billy asks after thinking of how badly Jacob will fight over being pulled away. Obviously Billy doesn't yet know how truly twisted this whole imprinting thing is.
"Billy has Quil told you everything that comes with his imprinting of Claire? Something I've noticed also affects Jacob?" I pause trying to choose my words carefully. This is the part I wasn't looking forward to speak about, Sam knows, but I don't think Billy knew how strong an imprint bond is, not much power is being held over Jacob right now. "Like, how was it that Claire's father was able to force Quil to stop coming around?"
"No," Sam answers for Billy. "We weren't sure how to address it, things have been a little hectic, so we weren't sure if any of you had even realized it yet."
"As you know a wolf who imprints feels the pull of their imprint, to protect, to care for. To listen to…" I'm speaking slowly trying not to alarm Billy. "We, or well I, noticed fairly quickly that Jacobs bond isn't only to Renesmee but also towards myself and Bella, seeing as we are her parents and as she is underage. We make most of her decisions for her. Its why I wanted to speak to you first, if we talk to Jacob, if we tell him these conditions the imprint pull will push him to listen. We'll reassure him that we don't plan to disappear, that the best thing for him is to move back home, finish school, go back to work. Even just hang out with his family and the packs." I answered easily. "He can come visit to see Renesmee. We feel that with the passing of the Volturi threat we all need to go back to a more normal life."
"I still don't like vampires, but your words do help with some of my worries. I'm sure I can blame your freaky mind reading on that though." Sam jumps back into the conversation I can see in his thoughts that we have taken not only what we want into account but what would be best for Jacob and his family into account. 'I wish all imprints and their families could be so understanding.'
"Its not like I can turn off my so called freaky mind reading and believe me, I do often try to block thoughts out." I reply to Sam and he stands ready to get Billy home. "We want what is best for Renesmee, that now extends to what is good for Jacob."
I shake Billy's hand as we all say our farewells.
Soon they are out of even where my gift can reach and I have a moment alone to think about the argument Bella and I had last night when we were discussing our options and my plans to speak with Billy Black and Sam.
Memory:
"Edward, I don't want to have to stick around here for another 6 or so years. I want to go live our lives and travel…. Yes I hear you, Renesmee needs to stay or Jacob could die, yeah fine, well can't Rosalie and Emmett stay here with her in our place? We are finally together lets go please. And she has Jake, he does great caring for her."
Her bad attitude these last few months has progressed even more, she had refused to get rid of the pregnancy and now she almost ignores Renesmee. It's like she resents her existence. She's spoken about it many times always the same words. Pawn our daughter off to someone else in the family, Jake will be there to also care for her always. It's like she is mad Renesmee was born a girl and not a boy like she had been convinced she was having.
The thing is I'm not going to leave our daughters' care in the hands of my family, at least not full time. If I learned anything from Nahuel's visit is that these half-breeds need their vampire father around. I'm not about to fail in this.
"Bella we have to do what's best for Renesmee and Jacob, you remember your friend Jacob who you would sneak off to hang out with even before he had good control over his wolf." I had responded to her.
"Ahhh…. Everything is about that child" She practically yelled at me "But see, you've also made my point, she has Jacob. So it's not like any of the family would have to do it alone. Let Jake stick around and just be her guardian like he has been doing, he doesn't seem to be in any hurry to leave any time soon anyways. Isn't it time for us to have some US time?"
I pull myself out of the memory.
Alice had seen a few concerning futures where Bella decides to go off on her own and leave us, leave me, leave Renesmee. The more fights we have like this the more pronounced those visions become. Things with Bella are strange its like the original pull I felt towards her is diminished, nothing like the mate pull I have seen with my family. Her most recent vision showed that Bella most likely wouldn't come back with them this time. Strangely I wasn't even broken hearted by this, I was almost relieved.
"I should go home." I say out loud in an attempt to clear my mind of the negative thoughts.
Jacob POV:
As soon as Nessie goes to bed I decide to head to my own room. Esme had changed one of the guest rooms for me so that I could stay over comfortably.
Nessie is growing so quickly she looks to be roughly four now, though thankfully it seems like her growing has slowed down significantly the last few days like that half-vampire male had said.
There is a calm now, throughout the house.
A calm we didn't feel until Nahuel showed up and basically told us that she would become an immortal. We're no longer racing against time; time has now become our ally. If anything, we'll have to worry about time working against me before it works against Ness. I muse over my thoughts as I lay in bed, feeling more comfortable as Edward isn't inside the house listening in. And I know he is always tuned to listen to anything I'm thinking, he's a good father, I will give him that much. He's very attentive towards Nessie and her needs. I can't really say as much about Bella lately. Now that the threat has passed I'm noticing she's more and more distant, leaving the care for Ness in the hands of Edward and his family. I hear them sometimes when they think I'm asleep, they argue… a lot. I never thought I would feel sorry for Edward, but here I am feeling all sorts of sorry that his new wife seems to want to ditch the baby she so badly begged to keep. At least that strong pull I felt towards her has disappeared. Though I'm not sure if it had to do with her becoming a vampire or me imprinting on Nessie.
"Edward, welcome home. How did it go?" I hear Esme say, though she tried to say it softly I could still hear her. They do this often and I feel like sometimes they do it for my own benefit as if they're telling me, 'Hey Jake, Edwards back watch your thoughts'. I hear Edwards laugh from downstairs. He's told me before that his family has long before grown accustomed to not having any privacy even within their own minds when he is around.
'Oh of course you're listening.' I project out.
"Mostly a habit Jacob, but since you're still awake would you like to come down and have a chat?" he speak softly but I can hear every word.
I get up slowly, he's got my attention now. The call of my imprint is strong and seeing as she's just a child the pure need to listen to her parents are just as strong. They had just as much power over me as my imprint does, they could send me away. Heck they could up and leave me behind. I had described imprinting to Bella before all of this. I had told her that it's almost like a servitude, that every cell in our bodies push us to obey and make our imprint happy. It's times like this that I absolutely hate the imprinting bond. If Edward had worded that statement any other way my imprint bond would have pushed me to obey without thought.
I don't bother trying to hide my thoughts, Edward knows all of this. He knows I can't go against my imprint; he knows I can't go against a direct order from him or Bella. Only thing I wonder is why hasn't he told Bella. Not that Bella even pays me any amount of attention any more. But maybe it's a good thing she doesn't also know, would she order me to stay by Nessie's side as her and Edward go live their lives? Would he leave Nessie? Or would Bella leave all of us? That last thought isn't the most horrible thought. Bella isn't the soft, caring mother she had acted as while she was pregnant. She's cold and distant towards her child and I can't even blame it on becoming a vampire.
It takes me a moment to realize the rest of the family has disappeared as I make it downstairs to the main living room.
"You wanted to chat?" I say trying to stay calm.
"Jacob, I met up with Sam and your father Billy earlier this evening. I was trying to get a better handle on this whole imprinting thing and wanted their opinions on things." Edward started, I didn't hate him anymore, like I did when Bella was human, the way he talked, the way he acted I could see now everything he does is calculated. He bases his words upon the thoughts of those around him. "The main threat is gone for now Jacob and it is time for us to all go back to normal, or to find a new normal I guess I should say. There's still time you can catch up with your schoolwork, graduate on time next year with your class. Billy said you were working at the garage, you can go back to work. You can spend time with your friends, the packs." He starts stressing some of his words. I can tell he's trying to be careful how he says them, making them suggestions instead of orders. Sad to say that Edward has been kinder than Bella in the last few weeks since the epic "fight" that didn't happen. "Jacob we believe some separation would be good for both of you. Renesemee isn't going anywhere, we won't up and leave you behind. But you should spend time with your father and your pack while you can. You can come around and visit every few days, Renesmee and I will be moving to the cabin. Carlisle and Esme plan to move to Bellingham. We've lingered here longer than we should, Carlisle is looking too young to some humans."
He stops talking abruptly, realizing I'm not paying much attention as his words hit me. The rest of the family plan to move, Nessie and Edward will be sticking around, he's trying to give me the last little bit of my normal life. So far he has been careful to avoid ordering anything, but I could also tell he wouldn't hesitate to make it an order if I pushed too much. So I guess I better try.
"Ok, fine." I practically spit out. 'I'm not happy about it but I get it.'
"Good night, Jacob. We can all start our new normal tomorrow, for now it is getting late." Edward says as he walks over to his own set of rooms. It doesn't take long before I hear the soft tunes of Edward playing his piano, I've never loved classical music, but I do have to admit it is growing on me, especially when Ness sits down with Edward and practices her own playing.
As I am walking back to my room I turn over the words Edward has said. Why didn't he say him and Bella would stay in the area? He hadn't mentioned Bella at all. Not for the first time I get a sense that Bella may not be sticking around long. It would explain that uncontrollable need I feel to care for and listen to my imprint and her father, but not so much the mother who up until a few months ago was my best friend, someone I thought I had been in love with.
I let the soft playing of the piano lull me to sleep as a small part of me become grateful Edward is giving me a chance to finish out some of my normal life.
We will see what happens at Sunrise.
