Chapter 2
Commando App

It was a Sunday, and once more, I found myself hanging out with Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase at the Davenport Mansion. After learning their bionic secret, Mr. Davenport allowed the four siblings to show me the Lab where they trained and practically lived. I felt honored to be the first outsider to be trusted with their family secret. The lab was also becoming mine and Leo's favorite hangout spot. We are all gathered in the Basement Lab, talking about the upcoming week; after everything that happened, Mr. Davenport signed Adam, Bree, and Chase up for school. Leo and I had already given them the down low about the school from the previous week, but Mr. Davenport ensured the kids could control their emotions before they attended so their bionics didn't glitch, and they wouldn't expose themselves.

Leo was standing next to Chase and Mr. Davenport, who were all at the cyberdeck. Bree and I were sitting on the other side talking about Taylor Swift once more while Adam was sitting in an office chair at the end of the cyberdeck. Ever since I met Adam, Bree, and Chase, Bree and I got close. We were like sisters, and it was nice to have a girlfriend to hang out with. Leo and I were still very close, of course.

"Okay, guys; you have been trained for all kinds of missions – " Mr. Davenport began, causing all of us to look up at him as he spoke. " – But you are about to enter a soul-bruising, confidence-crushing, apocalyptic environment, which is high school." Mr. Davenport explained slightly too dramatically, but his face made me laugh. "Adam, Bree, your glitch test is fairly stable." Mr. Davenport finished with a smile.

"Yes, I get to go to school with my new best friend!" Bree exclaims with excitement as she hugs me.

"Omg, I've got another best friend! Yeah!" I exclaimed with a smile as I hugged Bree back.

"Hey! " Leo calls from the cyberdeck, a look of jealousy on his face. "Get your own Maria!" Leo exclaims as he glares at Bree with a warning, who shoots him a look back.

I stand up to calm the situation. "Relax, Dooley. There's plenty of Maria to go around," I say with a grin as I point to myself.

"Anyway – " Mr. Davenport says while eyeing us oddly; he cuts in to stop a fight from happening. " – Chase, I'm still concerned about your Commando App." Mr. Davenport says with a frown while looking at Chase with an "I'm-Sorry" kind of look.

Leo and I eye one another with interest. "Commando App? Put some underpants on! We're going to school!" Leo exclaims while slapping his hands together. I just laugh at his statement.

"What's a Commando App?" I question with a raised eyebrow. "I thought Chase only had superintelligences," I say with thought. I was interested; the more I hung out with the Dooley-Davenports, the more I learned about Bionics.

Mr. Davenport grins, his ego showing through; II learned fast what an ego the man had from hanging out with them over the weekend. "Well, in the face of imminent threat, Chase's Commando App kicks in and becomes a fearless brute I like to call Spike!" Mr. Davenport exclaims with a laugh to himself. He then continued, looking at Leo and me. "It's kind of like a fight-or-flight thing, except I took out the flight part 'cause that's useless, and I replaced it with a testosterone level of like a Tasmanian devil-wolverine-shark-lion hybrid that's mad." Mr. Davenport finishes with wide eyes at his smarts.

"Why would anyone do that?" I asked, looking at Chase with a frown. He was so kind and nerdy; it just didn't seem possible for him to have that kind of personality.

"Because I'm awesome!" Mr. Davenport exclaimed, pointing to himself with a grin while I rolled my eyes at his ego head.

Chase just shook his head; I could tell he would do anything to prevent it from happening so he could go to school. "Don't worry, Mr. Davenport. I won't let Spike rear his ugly head," Chase says with a hopeful look.

"Oh yeah – " Mr. Davenport says as he rolls his eyes. " – You mean like last Christmas when I made the mistake of giving Adam boking gloves?" Mr. Davenport wondered seriously.

The man then pulled up a security camera and showed Leo and me what happened last Christmas. My eyes widened as I watched Chase become a completely different person, nearly tearing the lab apart, almost killing all three. I looked over and saw Leo looking just as shocked as I was. Once the video footage with the flashback was over, we all looked at Chase.

"Ugh, I'm still coughing up tinsel," Adam states as he clears his throat.

Leo then stood up straight. "Aw, come on, Big D; Chase has to come to school. With these guys, Maria and I will finally get a prime spot in the cafeteria! No more sitting under the vent that spills out dust balls." Leo said with a grin as he looked at me. I chuckled; it would be a nice change of seating.

Mr. Davenport frowns, still worried. "I don't know…."

"Don't Worry, Mr. Davenport – " I began as I stood up and held my hand up like a promise; my other hand was over my heart. " – Leo and I will help Chase make sure his Commando App doesn't go haywire," I said with a smile at Chase, I could see the grateful look he shot me.

"Well – " Mr. Davenport began as he thought things over. " – I guess, but I better not get a call from the art teacher saying Spike ripped out her larynx. She wouldn't be able to say anything because Spike ripped out her larynx." Mr. Davenport says with a thought; I raise my eyebrow at him.

"No worries. We'll make sure he stays out of trouble, too, right, Bree?" Adam smiles as he looks at his sister, who nods in agreement.

"Good, that's all I ask." Mr. Davenport says with a sigh, worry still on his face.

Adam then stood up with red boxing gloves. "Hey look what I found!" Adam started with a grin; I recognized them from the video, and my eyes widened.

Before anyone could stop him, Adam took his right hand and punched Chase in the stomach. Chase gasped, held his side, and then fell to the floor. Thankfully, he was okay; I saw Bree and Leo laugh while I snickered. Mr. Davenport looked at Adam with frustration.

"What?" Adam questioned as he saw Mr. Davenports' look. I'm sorry, but if he's that close to the gloves, it will happen, " Adam explained as he shrugged.

All I could do was laugh while I helped Chase get up. Mr. Davenport returned to work while Leo, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I hung out in the lab till I had to go home for the night, promising to walk to school with the four in the morning. I was excited for Adam, Bree, and Chase to join Leo and me officially in school. Yup ever since Leo came back, things have taken a change for the better. Little did I know how hectic my life was about to get with my new friends…

The next day, I met up with Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase at their house. I loved the Davenport Mansion. It was like my second home; I was always happy when I was here. We left for school after saying good morning to Mr. Davenport and Tasha. Thankfully, it wasn't far, so we could walk together. Bree asked me if her outfit was okay for her first day, and it was. The five of us soon made it to Mission Creek High, and the three went to the principal's office to get their class schedules. Afterward we all met up at Leo's locker, Leo and I showed Adam, Bree, and Chase the ropes.

So far, the whole morning has gone perfectly fine. The four of us managed to get through the time without mentioning the words "Bionics" or "Powers," the three seemed to be settling in much better than last week. Soon, lunchtime finally came. I met with Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase at the cafeteria entrance where Leo explained how the school food chain worked. The five of us walked into the lunchroom and looked around; many students were getting their lunches and sitting at their tables.

"Okay; your social life is determined by where you sit," Leo explains to his siblings as they look around. "Normally Maria and I sit at the table under the air vent that drops dust balls…" He continues to explain while he and I both make a face. "…Now you can't sit at the cool table, but you can either sit at the Cool Table Adjacent or with Maria and me under the air vent table," Leo explains as he gestures to each one.

"FYI…" Bree began as she got Leo and I's attention, "…Adam just sat at the cool table."

Instantly, we looked over and saw Adam sitting with the cheerleaders. "What!? He can't sit there!" Leo explained quickly with a worried look, "That's where the football players sit with the cheerleaders. They pride themselves on finding clever places to stuff your pudding cup!" Leo finishes as he smacks his hands together in a frenzy.

I put my hands on my head, slightly worried for Adam. "Oh no! What are we going to do!?" I questioned while looking at Leo, hoping we could come up with ideas to save Adam.

Chase, however, intervened with wide eyes. "Woah, those girls are actually talking to Adam, " he said in amazement, then he grinned. They can't talk about shapes and colors forever. See you!" Chase exclaimed as he waved goodbye to Leo, Bree, and me, who were going over to sit with Adam and the cheerleaders.

"Oh no, this isn't good!" I exclaim starting to hyperventilate.

Leo calms me down and Bree says, "What's so bad about them sitting there?" Bree wonders after I calm down, clearly not remembering Leo's explanation from earlier.

"That's where the football players sit, and you do not want to get on Trent's bad side. He's been terrorizing Leo and me since middle school." I explained to Bree, frowning at the memories.

After understanding the worry, Leo and I walked over to the cool table to try and save Adam and Chase from getting beaten up on their first day of school. Leo smiled at the cheerleaders, who smiled back. I just stood kind of awkwardly with Bree.

"Oh, hey, guys!" Adam greets us with a smile once we walk up to the table. Look, these cheerleaders told me when the football team gets here, I'm going to get a free pudding cup!" Adam exclaims, not realizing the danger he is in. He thinks the football players are excellent, poor, naive boys.

Leo tried everything to warn Chase and Adam to escape the table. However, neither boy wanted to budge stating they wanted to stay with the cheerleaders. Of course they did, I wasn't surprised by knowing that Chase and Adam thought the girls were cute. I sighed and rubbed the temples of my forehead. Everything was going to end badly, and I was scared to be a witness. I was about to open my mouth to say something when the sounds of cheering came into the room. Turning our heads, my face paled when I saw Trent and the other football players; this would not be good.

The football team came over to where we were and saw Adam and Chase sitting with the cheerleaders. The group also noticed Bree, Leo, and me standing near them. Trent came up to Leo and oddly sniffed him. I rolled my eyes and grimaced. Leo apologized and quickly rushed over to where Bree and I were trying to keep himself from getting beat up by Trent again. I frowned as I watched Trent turn on Chase instantly.

"Hey, that's my seat!" Trent exclaimed while glaring at Chase. The whole cafeteria was watching now. Trent growled while placing his hands on the table, getting into Chase's face. "Get lost before I use you as a napkin, " Trent threatened. I was surprised to see Chase stand on his ground and not move, eyeing Trent.

Bree, however, tugged on her brother's shirt. "Chase, we should probably go; he's not very absorbent, " Bree explained with a sweet smile at Trent, still trying to get Chase to move.

"Come on, Chase, let's go." I try to get him to move as well. Once he doesn't listen to Bree, I tug on Chase's arm, but he swats me away.

"Yeah, Chaaase…" Trent starts dragging out Chase's name while still being in his face. "…You should listen to Angle Wings, or I'll make your life a living hell," Trent explains while he nods to me. I grimaced at the nickname Trent calls me; he has always called me Angle Wings since middle school; that's how he hit on me, and frankly, it was pretty annoying. I frown when I don't see Chase move even more; what was he thinking was Chase asking for his death bed?

Trent saw that Chase didn't budge either or even acknowledge a word he said; that didn't make Trent happy; he always wanted a reaction from his victims. Suddenly, Trent knocked over a glass of Chocolate Milk, causing it to spill purposely all over the table. Once it spilled Trent grabbed Chase by the front of his shirt and lifted the boy off the sea; II frowned. Things were about to get ugly, and the whole school was watching, waiting to see what happened between Trent and Chase.

"Oh, look, a spill!" Trent said into Chase's face, practically spitting on him, still holding his shirt in his hand. I think I'm going to wipe it up with your face!" Trent yelled while he laughed, then went to move Chase.

But then, something unique happened. I watched the tables suddenly turn. Out of nowhere, Chase grabbed Trent's arms and pulled the bully off him, turning him around. Chase slammed Trent into the table, causing his face to be squished against the table right in the Chocolate Milk he just spilled. Adam jumped back just as fast as Leo and I did; I could see the worried look on Bree's face as Chase spoke in a completely different tone of voice; it was more profound, and honestly, it kind of scared me.

"Think again, Bubble neck," Chase growled into Trent's ear while pinning him down. "I'm going to rip out your kneecaps and use them as hockey pucks." Chase threatened while he shoved Trent into the table more. It was odd to see the rest of the football team scared of Chase, unsure of how to to help Trent.

Adam glances over at us and frowns. He says, with his voice lowered so Leo, Bree, and I can hear, "I don't mean to alarm anyone, but I think Spike it back." Adam finishes as he sees Chase.

We all give him a "Really" kind of look. Suddenly, Chase or, uh, "Spike" loses his hold on Trent. The football player manages to get out of Spike's hands and stands up straight. The other members of the team join Trent, standing around him to guard him. Chase "Spike" still stands his ground and glares at the group. Everyone is still watching the scene before them, shocked at what is happening.

"You have no idea who you're messing with!" Trent yelled, trying to regain his calm composure after seeing everyone watching them. He held his hands up and said to the team, "Pudding cups!" Trent demanded, and suddenly, the whole football team, including Trent, had pudding cups.

"Oh…Pudding Cups; I'll take those!" Chase "Spike" says he grabs them out of Trent's hands. Suddenly, my eyes widened, and my mouth dropped open at what happened next.

I watched Chase "Spike" crush two pudding cups with his hands. Right before our eyes, the Football team was covered in Chocolate Pudding since it sprayed everywhere. Everyone in the cafeteria gasped, and the Football player's mouths dropped open, and their eyes widened. Trent glared at Chase. "Spike" ready to pound the crap out of him, very angry.

Trent growled, "Hey! OOOOOH! YOUR DEAD!" Trent yelled; all the football players stepped forward to get Chase.

However, Chase "Spike" then roared at all of them. I was still shocked to see this all unfold. No one had ever dared stand up to Trent and the other Football players before. Chase "Spike" continued to roar loudly in their faces while stomping his foot, getting into a threatening position, ready to tear them apart. But it seemed to have worked enough for the Football players to back off and run out of the cafeteria.

"Yeah, well, you're lucky; we have to go practice now!" Trent says as he leaves the cafeteria, fear on his face.

Once the football players were gone and Chase "Spike" calmed down and caught his breath, everyone in the cafeteria started clapping and cheering for Chase. Leo and I glanced at each other in shock, still not over what we had just witnessed. So this was the deadly Spike that Mr. Davenport explained to us yesterday morning. I made a mental note to myself to never get on Chase's bad side.

Chase "Spike" pulled a chair out and smirked. "Take a seat, compadres. This is our table now." Chase "Spike" says as he sits down, puts his feet on the table, and puts his arms behind his head. I went to sit down, but Chase "Spike" pulled a chair out and spoke. "No way, Maria, you're next to me. I want to enjoy the view." Chase "Spike" says as he commands me to sit next to him.

I eyed him oddly, and so did Leo; he whispered to me. "Did he just hit on you?" Leo asks me with a look of surprise on his face.

"I think he did," I say, looking at him in confusion. I shake my head.

"Okay, this just went from cool to weird…" Bree says, not liking the idea of Chase "Spike" hitting on me. She pats my shoulder and grins. "Still, you better do what Spike wants unless you want to end up like Trent," Bree advises as she sits next to some cheerleaders and talks to them.

I sigh and sit next to Chase, "Spike," while Leo sits between me and the cheerleaders. It was awkward. Chase's alter ego sat up and scooted closer to me, putting his arm around my shoulders. I just smiled at "Spike" and carried on the conversation. We both looked up when Leo spoke to the head cheerleader.

"Hello ladies, you may remember me from health class when I passed out during the Miracle of Birth video – " Leo begins with an innocent grin. " – It's good to see you again." Leo finishes as the cheerleaders shake their heads at him, and I laugh, causing him to shoot me a death glare; I just continue to snicker as we enjoy the rest of lunch at the cool table…

Towards the end of the day, Adam, Bree, Leo, Chase Spike, and I walked down the hallway as a group, heading for our last classes. While we walked, people moved out of our way and offered to carry our bags and books. Some people even wanted pictures with us; this was an odd jump in popularity, especially for Leo and I. Leo was, of course, enjoying every minute of it while I was anxious that it was going to come back and bite us in the butt.

"Make way for the alpha dogs! Woof! Woof! Woof!" Leo exclaimed while cheering loudly. I couldn't help but grin at his excitement. It was nice seeing my friend happy.

"Wait, if we were the Alpha Dogs, then…" Bree says out loud while thinking about something. She then drops her books on purpose and watches as three guys fight over to pick them up for her. She beams with excitement. "I LOVE THIS!" Bree says as they hand her the books back. She thanks them.

A boy then walked by and gave Chase a golden hall pass. My eyes widened. I had always heard about them, but I had never seen them before. Golden Hall passes are impossible to get. "What's this?" Chase, "Spike," wondered as he showed us the hall pass.

"That's a golden hall pass!" I exclaimed with a smile, eyeing it over, kind of jealous he had one.

Chase "Spike" scoffed, "So? What about it?" He wondered, still eyeing it.

"You can go anywhere with a golden hall pass, plus you never get marked tartine if you're late for class, so long as you show the teachers and monitors that." Leo explains with widening as well; he never saw one either.

Then, Chase "Spike" scoffed and held his arms up to show off his muscles. "Please, I can already go anywhere I want, " he said while he flexed his arms. These are my hall passes," Chase said. "Spike," he said as he started to kiss his muscles, making all of us feel a bit uncomfortable.

Leo grimaced and eyed Adam, Bree, and me. "If he starts oiling up, I'm out," Leo says with annoyance.

"Hey! At least he isn't hitting on you like he is to me." I complain while eyeing Leo, challenging him.

At that, Leo laughed at me. I guess it was only fair since I teased him a lot. I was about to open my mouth when Chase's demeanor changed. He dropped his arms and eyed us in confusion. "Commando App disengaged? Guys! Why was I in Commando App?" Chase demanded as he eyed all of us, returning to his old nerdy shelf.

"Were you in Commando Mode?" Bree wondered with a raised eyebrow, acting innocent.

"I didn't see a Commando Mode, did you Maria?" Leo wondered as he eyed me too.

I shake my head and continue the lie train. "Nope, everything's perfectly normal, " I say to Chase with a smile, but Chase raises an eyebrow at us.

"Oh, that's good; everyone keeps lying!" Adam exclaimed with a goofy grin as he chuckled.

Chase gasped as I facepalmed, leaving Adam to give everything away. "Guys! You were supposed to watch out for me!" Chase cries in annoyance as he glares at all of us.

Leo grins like a child on Christmas, "Oh, we watched the whole thing! You maltreated the quarterback, and Pudding popped the whole offensive line!" Leo exclaimed while bouncing on his feet.

I giggled at this: "Yeah, it was the coolest thing I've ever witnessed. Remind me not to get on your bad side." I said, holding my hands up in defense while smiling at Chase.

"What!?" Chase questioned as his eyes widened at the information. He groans. Great, this is going to come back and haunt my Supreme Court Nomination!" Chase whines as he crosses his arms.

I whisper to Leo, "What a nerd."

Leo agrees with my statement as Bree says, "You know what Spike would say to that? Nothing! He'd rip your rib cage and use it as a xylophone!" Bree exclaimed as she smacked her hands together while she talked.

"Yeah, I like Spike. He's like a big fun monster, and you're a sad little buddy." Adam says in a mocking tone while he chuckles at himself.

Once more, I found myself laughing at what Adam said. He really was a delight to have around. Chase shot all of us an annoyed look while Leo thought, "Don't worry; I'll get Spike back!" Leo grins as he grabs the front of Chase's shirt and tries to get into his face. He says, "Get lost before I use you like a napkin!"

We all watched Leo try to lift Chase with no luck. I laughed once more as Leo embarrassed himself in front of his stepsiblings and my new friends. Finally, after a few tries, Leo stopped and looked at all of them, red showing on his face from embarrassment, as he let go of Chase, who never moved once during the whole thing.

"This isn't going to work," Leo says with a frown.

Before we could speak, the bell rang, and we all continued with the rest of the school day. Chase had managed to stay regular, but the whole school still treated him like a God. Once school was over, I couldn't hang out at the Davenport Mansion as much as I wanted that afternoon; Leo understood I had to be home for family dinner. It was a rule my parents had; we had a family dinner once a week to spend quality time together. I said goodbye to Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase and went home…

The following morning, Chase was still more famous than ever, and the Football team was still humiliated sitting at the table under the air vent that spilled out dust balls. It was odd to be sitting at the cool table, but it was a nice change. I had to agree with Leo; it felt nice to be famous for once. Leo, Adam, Bree, Chase, and I were enjoying our food at the cool table. I sat between Chase and Leo, Bree and Adam sat across from us, and the cheerleaders sat around us. Bree talked to the cheerleaders about Taylor Swift and fashion while Leo was trying to finish his last-minute homework. Adam was making a giant pile of food while Chase and I sat back and relaxed.

"Hey, look, there's Trent. Maybe I should go apologize," Chase said to us. We all saw Trent join the other football players at the loser table.

"Woah, slow your roll, buttercup," Bree says, pulling her brother back into his seat. "What's the rush?"

"Bree's right. We might as well enjoy being popular while it lasts; it won't last forever." I explained with a smile. I laughed to myself as I saw the dust balls spilling into their food. Now they know how it felt.

"They are right, Chase. Besides mailing Trent a greeting card, it's much more personal," Leo said, lightly joking as he grinned at the cheerleaders, who all giggled at him.

I frowned, seeing Chase's guilty look, and suddenly, I felt terrible for the kid. The three of them had been locked up in a basement their whole lives up until now, and this is how things go for their first week of school, for the first time in the real world. I sighed and continued to eat my breakfast burrito, and Adam grinned up at us, holding a cup and straw.

"Hey guys, look, the cheerleaders cut my food into tiny pieces. I'm eating a turkey burger through a straw!" Adam states like a child on Christmas. I giggle as he starts to slurp it while the others make a disgusting look on their faces.

Then, Chase was tapped on the shoulder, causing him to look up. I turned and frowned when I saw it was Principal Perry. Oh, no, this would end badly; Principal Perry was the last person you wanted to deal with. I saw her call Chase over, calling him a "new kid," and he instantly did what he was told. The two stood face to face in the lunchroom, and everyone watched one more to see what happened; we were oddly getting a lot of attention late, and I was starting not to like it anymore.

"Do you know what happens when my football team gets humiliated?!" Principal Perry questioned as she glared at Chase. He was about to speak, but she cut him off. "No, you don't! Because my football team doesn't get humiliated!" Principal Perry exclaimed while crossing her arms and glaring at him.

I watched as average Chase quivered under her look, poor kid. Adam decided to speak up, "They look humiliated to me." He explains while we all look over and see them get hit in the heads by trash bags. I watch as Bree slaps a hand over Adam's mouth to keep him quiet, and I facepalm.

"I know what team spirit is about because I was the North Pacific roller derby jammer." Principal Perry explained while she eyed the rest of us at the tables.

"That's quite an accomplishment," Chase says as he shrugs. Poor boy, he was asking for his deathbed again, this time from our principal.

"Don't mock me, squash face!" Principle Perry yells, making Chase jump back. "My career ended when a trash talker like you got inside my head, and I wiped. One Zebra called it the worst single-bodied Collison she'd ever seen!" Principal Perry explained as she smacked her hands together while eyeing Chase.

I shook my head when I saw Chase laughing at himself. He was in big trouble. "I would crash, too, if I saw a talking Zebra," Chase explained, trying to reason with our principal, but it didn't work.

Principle Perry stomped her foot and glared at him: "It was a referee, you desk donkey!" The insult made Chase frown once more and look at Perry in confusion. Principle Perry then got into Chase's face: "Trent told me what you did yesterday morning at breakfast. You will NOT undermine the morale of my team! Evacuate this table now!" Principal Perry yelled into his face, threatening the boy.

Suddenly I saw Chase's body demeanor change and him tense. I frowned while Chase spoke up; his voice was once deeper and scarier, and I knew Spike was back. "Watch who you're talking to, sports bra! I bet you panicked, threw yourself off the track, and blamed the other team for your weakness!" Chase "Spike" exclaimed causing the whole cafeteria to look at them again.

"Um, guys…." I say to Adam, Bree, and Leo.

We all looked at one another and stood up, ready to defend Chase if things got even more out of hand. Leo and I knew how Principal Perry was; these three didn't. I prayed that she wouldn't retaliate.

"Do you think this Spike thing has gotten a bit out of hand?" Leo wondered as he looked at all of us.

"He might have crossed the line at sports bra," I explain with a nod from my head.

Principle Perry looked around at everyone; we were all gathered now. "I had to quit because of that incident, " she explained with a frown, feeling embarrassed.

"Quit? Or move out of the state in shame!?" Chase "Spike" questioned while glaring at Principal Perry.

She then turned to the whole cafeteria. "He doesn't know, he wasn't there!" Principle Perry defended.

Chase "Spike" grinned evilly and said, "Why don't you hop in your economy car and tottle on home to your six cats and your online bingo tournament." He insulted, glaring at our principal.

"Jokes on you; I have five cats!" Principle Perry exclaimed, panic showing on her face.

Then Trent got up from the loser table and pulled Principal Perry over to her, whining about how she hadn't gotten their table back for them yet. Meanwhile, Chase "Spike" turned to us and grinned. All four of us just smiled innocently at Chase "Spike," trying to ensure we didn't tic him off. This side of Chase was starting to scare me, I was missing nerdy, annoying, know-it-all Chase. Principal Perry grabbed Chase "Spike" by the arm and made him turn to face him; we all continued to watch.

"Alright, listen here, kid. I'll make you a deal." Principle Perry began as my eyes widened. Leo and I eyed one another, knowing this could not be good. Perry continued, "Let's be civilized and settle this the old-fashioned way, with a bone-crushing grudge match on the football field!" She exclaimed with a grin.

The cafeteria cheered with the football players while Adam, Bree, Leo, and I looked panicked. Chase, as Spike, however, just grinned, "We're in!" He agreed while he turned to look at us; he pointed to each person, "Him…Him… - " He began while pointing to Adam and Leo, " – Her – " He added while pointing to Bree; he then grinned at me and pointed to me, " – And her…" Chase "Spike" finished as he winked at me slightly, I shook my head as my eyes widened; what? Did he just add me to his team?

Principle Perry smirks at us, "Alright then, you and your band of nobodies versus my fighting dingoes!" She exclaims with a grin while the football players and the rest of the student body cheer.

I frowned. What has my life come to? Was Chase, as Spike, trying to give us all our deathbeds? Thankfully, Leo came between Chase "Spike" and Principal Perry. He said, "Oh, ma'am, as much as I'd like to flex my football fanciness, um, the girls' soccer has the field tonight." Leo explained as Adam, Bree, and I sighed in relief, but a look of disappointment showed on our principal's face.

"Oh, very well…." Principal Perry began as she sighed, "I guess I can't condone such a violent game on school grounds. " She adds, making us sigh in relief once more. She then smirks evilly at us and exclaims, "So let's take it to the dog park across the street!"

As the saying goes, the whole football team and cafeteria cheer in excitement. Suddenly, the school bell rings to signal the start of classes, and everyone runs out to start their day. Chase "Spike" turns to us with a grin. I frown while Adam, Bree, and Leo all have a look of fright on their faces.

"Am I the only one that will need a fresh pair of pants before we start?" I questioned while eying my best friend and his stepsiblings.

I could chuckle nervously as Leo raised his hand in agreement…

It turns out this had been one of the longest school days of my life. Throughout the whole day, students have been giving me looks wherever I go. I found out later that they had been giving Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo looks as well. Some of them even laughed at us for daring to challenge the football team. Finally, the school bell rang, and the five of us gathered at the dog park to talk about our game plan to win.

Beforehand, I had texted my mom explaining I would hang out with Leo after school and stay for dinner since Tasha invited me, of course I was lying. Thankfully, she didn't know I was lying and told me it was okay since she trusted Leo. I hated lying to my mom, but if she found out I was about to participate in a grudge football game against the school football team with Leo and his stepsiblings, she wouldn't let me, too, and I wasn't humiliated for chickening out.

I sighed as Leo remembered that his stepsiblings didn't know how to play football; he started to explain the rules to them. Thankfully, I knew how to play since I sometimes watched football with my dad and Leo. That evening, as the sun set, we wore school team uniforms from the soccer team to distinguish who was on what team. The football team was gathered on one side of the field, while Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I were all on the other. After our huddle, Principal Perry, our referee, told us to gather in the middle. I swallowed when I saw the whole school was here; no one would miss this event.

"This doesn't seem fair," Leo whined as he put on his helmet. I nodded in agreement.

Principal Perry just smirks at us, "Seems fair to me. Let's get on with it!" She cheers as she blows her referee whistle, and the cheerleaders cheer in excitement, riling up the rest of the school.

Leo smiles once she moves away, "Alright, let's huddle!" He claimed to try to get us together.

"Hu? What? Pardon me?" Adam, Bree, and Chase "Spike" all questioned in confusion as they looked oddly at Leo.

"You forget to explain football terms to them; rules are only rules," I explained as my eyes widened and fear crept into my mind. This was not going to end well, and wow, I found myself thinking that about everything lately. But this time, I had a feeling it was true.

"Oh man, I forgot about that. Thanks, Maria." Leo says as he nods to me. I nod back. "Okay, huddling is gathering together to form a plan to stop the other team from getting into our end zone and scoring a—Leo was in the middle of explaining when Trent rushed by with the football in hand. Two other players tackled Leo to the ground.

Adam, Bree, Chase "Spike," and I made faces and "Ohhed" at Leo's pain. Leo was in pain because he finished his sentence in a pained voice, " – touchdown."

I helped Leo up after he caught his breath and ensured he was okay. Once Principal Perry also made sure Leo was okay (claiming she didn't want to get sued by his parents if he was hurt during this), she blew the whistle, and the game continued. During our game, Leo's stepsiblings were starting to understand the game better, but specific terms still confused them; when we explained to Adam that he had to hike the ball between his legs, I laughed when Adam thought it was football and not handball. Adam took too long, and Chase "Spike" took the ball and hiked it like Leo told Adam to; instead of passing it to Leo, Chase "Spike" passed it to me.

However, before I could make it far with the ball, two Dingo footballers grabbed me by my arms and carried me to the end zone since I had the football in my hand. I gasped as I was dropped onto the ground in our end zone. Trent smirked as he saw who the team ended up carrying. I glared at him as I had no choice but to pass the ball to him so his team could kick off this time.

"Take that!" Trent exclaimed with a smirk, "Maybe you'll realize you're on the wrong side Angle Wings." Trent flirted with a wink towards me. "The view is better in Trentville." Trent continues as he points to himself.

I glared at him, "In your dreams, Trent you disgust pig." I insult as Leo comes over to help me stand up.

Trent walks away after growling at me; Leo sighs, "You, okay?" He asks me, and I nod.

"Yeah, thanks, let's get this over with," I say while dusting myself off.

Leo nods, and we get back to the game. It feels like the game lasts forever, but we only played for twenty minutes. At this point, the game was pretty close, and I couldn't believe we had an actual chance of winning. The whole school was dancing in the bleachers, and the cheerleaders were cheering. It was starting to get past dinner time, and I knew I was going to be late for my curfew, but it was worth the risk of getting grounded; ever since Adam, Bree, and Chase came into my and Leo's life, things have gotten pretty insane, and I loved every minute of it.

I was sweaty, dirty, and losing, but still having a blast. I was spending time with my long-time friend and three new friends. The whole school was watching to see how things turned out, and I laughed to myself whenever Adam, Bree, or Chase "Spike" was confused about the football game. Leo pulled us all to the side of the field in a huddle, this was it, our last chance to win. Principle Perry called it game over after this quarter since it was getting so late.

"Losing makes me wanna rip out my intestines and wear them as a sweatband." Chase "Spike" growls as he clenches his fists; we all look disgusted.

Leo just shook his head and changed the subject. "Okay, the only way we're going to win is if we use your superspeed—" Leo began pointing to Bree. He continued, "Your super strength—"he said while pointing to Adam. He then sighs and points to Chase, "Spike. " And your nutty split personality."

"But isn't that cheating, Leo?" I wondered as I raised my eyebrow. Besides, we can't expose their bionics, remember?" I asked, whispering the last part so only the other four could hear me.

Bree scoffs at my statement, "At this point, I'll do whatever it takes. I already smell like a sweaty ape; I don't want this to be for nothing." She explains while sighing in annoyance.

Leo grins and says, "Alright, here's what we're going to do." He says with excitement in his eyes.

We all huddle again and review our plan to take down the football team. During the rest of the game, Adam, Bree, and Chase used their bionics like Leo suggested. I was worried the other students would catch on, but no one seemed to notice being too wrapped up in the excitement. Leo distracted the football team at one point while Bree used her superspeed and tied all their shoelaces together. Chase as Spike stormed through the team, who were confused at their laces being tied together, only to fall to the ground when Chase stormed through them and slammed the ball into the end zone, scoring our team a point. I couldn't help but laugh at the school's football teams' confused looks.

Principle Perry gathered us in the middle of the field after a few more rounds. "Seven seconds left. Now remember, kids, there's no shame in losing!" she exclaimed with a smirk and then laughed—she even snorted as she laughed. "Oh wait, yes, there is! Game on!" she finished while blowing her whistle.

Leo pulled us aside before we started, "Alright, we have time for one more play, spike. You've scored every touchdown today, so if you score one more, then we w f with their spleens; you know I failed."

Everyone agreed, and I sighed, wondering how Chase had managed to stay in his Commando App all day. We all got into position, and the game was about to start again. I watched Chase's whole demeanor change, and his body tension seized. My eyes widened as my question was answered when I realized that this meant Chase was no longer Spike. He turned around and looked at us in confusion while holding the ball, eyeing us and frowned.

"Where am I? What's going on? And why am I wearing a jockstrap?" Chase wondered in his innocent, nerdy personality as he shifted his body funny, not used to the jockstrap.

"Oh no, it's Chase!" Bree exclaimed. Realizing her brother was back to normal, she grabbed his shoulders and started to shake him. We need Spike back! Where is he?! Where is Spike?!" Bree questioned as she shook him roughly, making him dizzy.

I grabbed Bree's shoulders and pulled her off Chase. "Take it easy on him…" I mutter as she manages to snake out of my hold.

Trent calls from the other side, "Come on, we don't have all night!" Trent yells, and the rest of the football team agrees with him.

"Time out!" Leo calls out, making the signal.

Principle Perry blows the whistle, and the whole school boos at us for calling time out. The five of us huddle, and Chase still looks as confused as ever; once more, my guilt for Chase returns.

"I told you guys I don't want to be Spike!" Chase whines as he glares at all of us. "I've been for fifteen years for my first day of school, and I don't even remember it." Chase finishes with a frown.

I sigh and say, "He's right, guys. We shouldn't have taken advantage of him. Can you forgive us, Chase?" I wonder if, as I look at him with pleading eyes, I know Leo can never say no, too.

"Yeah, when you put it that way, I feel selfish too; Maria's right. Can you forgive us?" Leo wonders, too, looking at Chase with sorry eyes.

"Pft big deal, snap out of it. I wanna win!" Adam exclaims breaking our sorry train as he shakes Chase.

Leo stops Adam and says, "No, he and Maria are right; this needs to stop." Leo explains with a frown.

Chase shakes his head, "Well, I may not know what's going on, but I think we can still win. It doesn't hurt to try." He finishes as he grins at all of us. "Besides, what do we have to lose?"

"Our popularity," Bree says with a frown.

"Our table. "Adam says with a frown as well.

"Everything." Leo and I simultaneously say that we turn to one another. "Jinks!"

Trent snapped us out of our conversation, "Come on, are we playing football or putt-putt!?" Trent yelled, causing the whole school to laugh at his joke.

The five of us made another plan, and Chase was willing to use his superintelligence to help us win. After we called play, everyone got into position, and the ball was hiked to Chase. However, something caused Chase to act odd, and I realized that he must have been glitching from overusing his bionics. Suddenly, Chase was tackled by Trent and two other players, and he landed on the field with a groan.

"That's a game! Dingo's win!" Principal Perry yells, causing the football team and the whole school to cheer.

Trent came over as Leo and I were helping Chase up. "Yeah! See you in the cafeteria and the puddings on you!" Trent yelled as he pointed at us and laughed before he stalked off. "After the party at my place!" Trent yelled at the crowd, causing them to all cheer and follow him.

Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I were the only ones left in the dog park; things were suddenly quiet. I still couldn't comprehend what happened and how crazy my past two weeks had been. Did I just play football with Leo and his siblings against the school team? I watched as the others took their helmets off and tossed them to the ground, groaning tiredly. I did the same thing and took my hair out of its ponytail. I grimaced when I saw that it was almost ten pm, way past my curfew, but I might as well stick with the four friends; I was already in trouble, so what's the difference now?

"Well, we may not be the alpha dogs anymore, but we still have each other, so we're not complete nobodies," Chase explained with a smile, trying to look on the bright side of things and cheer us up.

"No, we are total nobodies…" I groaned as I put my head in my hands; I sighed. "….Back to square one."

Leo sighs happily, "Well, at least I have you four to carry my broken butt home." Leo finishes as we look at him in confusion; he falls to the ground and cries in pain.

I sigh as Adam, Bree, Chase, and I all pick up Leo and carry him to the Davenport Mansion. By the time we arrived, it was almost eleven at night. Tasha and Mr. Davenport were worried when they saw us carrying Leo in and were all in soccer team uniforms, dirty, sweaty, and exhausted. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport finally got the truth out of the five of us, and they could only laugh at our shenanigans. Mr. Davenport, however, grounded Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo for being out so late and getting into a football match with the football team and Principal Perry.

Thankfully, Tasha was excellent and allowed me to wash up and change clothes before she took me home to my house. I thanked Tasha for the ride home; since she told me my mother called her and asked if I was still there and helped cover my butt, she offered to drive me, not wanting me to walk in the dark alone. I entered the house and indeed my mother was waiting for me not very happy that I was home close to midnight, she had been worried sick about me when I didn't come home after dinner.

"Tasha told me you were helping them resolve an argument between Leo and his siblings. Is that true?" my mother questioned as she raised an eyebrow and placed her hands on her hips.

I nodded and sighed, "Yeah, it took a lot longer than I thought it would. I'm sorry. I just wanted to help my friends get along." I explained simply, and I managed to go along with Tasha's lie very easily.

My mother rubs her forehead but sighs, "Fine for now…but you are grounded all weekend, young lady. Give me your phone…" she instructs me as she holds her hand out.

I groaned and handed it to her. She nodded. "Good. Also, no hanging out with Leo or his siblings this weekend either. Your grounding will be over on Monday." She finished with a stern look. Now get to bed; it's one in the morning." She finished as she pointed to the stairs that led up to our bedrooms.

With a sigh of relief to escape from my mother, I carried my book bag upstairs and into my room. Closing the door, I set my book bag down and change into pjs. Before I finally go to bed, I get my diary out and start writing about today's adventure with Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo. Ever since I met Leo's stepsiblings, I've kept a journal about mine and Leo's adventures with the three; thankfully, my mom didn't know I had this; if she ever read it, she'd think I was crazy.

Also, that night, when I finally did lay in my bed, I fell asleep with a smile on my face and remembered everything that had happened the past two days. I silently thanked Leo's mom for covering me with an excuse as to why I was out so late. I fell asleep, excited for Monday and to see what other new adventures lay ahead with mine and Leo's new friends…
