Chapter 2

Max Caufield x Mark Jefferson

AN: Mark is not a killer in this fanfic. It takes place after the everyday hero contest, around middle of March. "" is for talking. '' is for texting. Italics is for thinking.

Max woke up to the sound of her alarm. After turning it off she decided to lay back for a few extra minutes. After her first snooze went off, Max decided to get up. As she finished showering and getting dressed for the day there was a knock on her door.

"Hey Max, are you in there?" Max could hear Kate Marsh ask.

"One moment Kate." Max yelled as she put her shoes on before grabbing her bag. "What's up Kate?" Max asked as she opened her door.

"I'm sorry to bother you this early in the morning, but could you let everyone know that I'm not feeling too good. I have already emailed the nurse and the administrator, but I thought I would let someone know that I'm not feeling well today. Just in case they don't see the email before the first period." Kate finished as she walked back to her own room.

"Don't worry Kate. If anyone asks, I'll let them know." Max said. "Just get some rest and get better ok." Max continued.

"Thank you, Max." Kate said before closing her door.

Looking at her watch, Max saw that she still had plenty of time before her first class for today. Making a quick decision she decided to text her old friend Chloe. It had taken Max almost a month to get enough courage to contact her last semester. And when she finally did Chloe was not impressed that she had taken that long to contact her.

'Are you up sleepy head?' Max texted Chloe.

As she reached the door leading down to the main entrance of the dorm Max heard her text signal go off. Looking at her phone she saw that Chloe had replied to her message.

'I am now.' It read.

'Care for breakfast at Two whales? :)' Max replied before exiting the building. 'My treat.' Max sent just after the first one.

'Can't say no to free food.' Chloe replied within a minute.

'Great, I'll meet you there in 40. :)' Max replied and before she could put her phone away it pinged again.

'Fucking emoji.' Chloe had replied making Max smile before putting away her phone.

Feeling that today could be a great day, Max started to walk towards the exit where the bus stop is located. Her path, however, was soon blocked by her two least favourite classmates. Nathan Prescott and Victoria Chase.

"Look who it is. I's the selfie-hoe of Blackwell." Victoria said as she stepped in front of Max. "To think that you still seem to believe that this hipster bullshit is impressing Mark." She continued. "You know, I think he's just being kind when he says that you have a gift Max. I honestly can't see this gift of yours." She added.

"Are you done yet? I've got somewhere to be." Max said as she tried to get passed Victoria.

"Not so fast Max. I'm not done yet." Victoria said as she pushed Max back, making her fall. "You might as well withdraw your entry in this contest, as we both know you don't really stand a chance against someone like me. Unlike you, I'm the one with the real talent. And once Mark sees it, it won't take long before he's all mine." Victoria continued without realising that Mr. Jefferson had witnessed her pushing Max and heard the last statement and was currently standing behind Victoria holding a hand over Nathans mouth.

As Mr. Jefferson was walking up from the parking area of Blackwell when he overheard a commotion and went to investigate. As he rounded the corner, he saw Victoria Chase push Max Caufield over. As he got behind Victoria, he put his hand over Nathans mouth and made sure to hold him still as he listened to what Victoria was saying.

"Really miss Chase." Mr. Jefferson said making Victoria jump. "It that what you think?" he continued while giving Victoria a very stern look. Letting Nathan go he turned his full attention on Victoria.

"What you did is not nice Miss Chase. Now I suggest you leave Miss Caufield alone and get to class or back to your dorm. Is that understood?" Mr. Jefferson said leaving no room for Victoria to argue.

As Victoria and Nathan left, Mark turned to where he had seen Max laying, only to see her running towards the bus stop. He wanted to tell her that Miss Chase is wrong and that he genuinely believed that Max had a great gift. Being in his own world he didn't notice that he had been looking at Max a little too long. He only returned when he heard someone call his name. As he looked over, he saw the principal, Mr. Wells, approaching.

"Great another long pointless discussion." Mr. Jefferson thought but greeted the principal as usual.

Sometime later at the Two Whales.

"So, what's the price for the photographic contest this time?" Chloe asked as she was chewing on a piece of bacon.

"Nothing to fancy really." Max said as she went back to staring at her breakfast.

"Well, it got to be something right?" Chloe said.

"Whoever wins get to have their photograph exhibited in an art gallery in Portland." Max said. "Which is super cool and all, but since all photographs are already exhibited in the library here it doesn't really feel like anything extra." Max said.

"Well, it's still in another big city, that's for sure. And it would help you to get your name out there if you were to win." Chloe continued.

"Heh, I've been to the library, and I have seen all the others photographs, and I can tell you that I won't stand a chance against some of them." Max said as she finally took a bite of her own food.

"Who do you think is going to win?" Chloe asked.

"It'll probably be Victoria again." Max said. "Or it might be Kate this time, her photograph is the best one I've seen among the ones exhibited." Max continued.

"That would surely knock that Victoria bitch down a peg or two if Kate ends up winning this contest." Chloe said in between bites of her food. "When will it be announced?" she continued.

"The public have until noon today to cast their final votes on which photograph they think is the best." Max said as she pushed her almost uneaten food away. "Then they'll need to check all the votes and count them. I think Mr. Jefferson will announce it during the Vortex Club party tomorrow, but he hasn't mentioned anything yet." Max said.

"Maybe he will during you class later today?" Chloe said.

"Maybe." Max said sighing.

"Are you sure you're alright Max?" Chloe asked with concern. "You have barley eaten anything, usually you kind of wolf down the food Joyce brings you." Chloe continued.

"I sort of lost my appetite due to a run in with Victoria and Nathan as I was leaving the campus to come here." Max said.

"Ouch, did they say or do anything to you?" Chloe said getting into a defensive mood.

"No, just their usual bullshit." Max said. "Which I know I shouldn't let get to me." Max continued.

"So, no jury this time?" Chloe said to change the topic as she too finished her food.

"No, it's all up to the citizens of Arcadia Bay to decide." Max said feeling relieved that Chloe decided to let it go for now.

"Oh man, had I known that I would have made sure to give yours a bunch of votes." Chloe said making Max smile. "Noon you said?" Chloe asked getting up.

"Yes, why?" Max asked as she saw her friend walking towards the exit.

"Got to give my bestie my vote. Or a few of them." Chloe said before she left the diner.

As Max prepares to leave after having paid for her and Chloes food she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket.

'You sure you don't want me to beat them up for you?' Chloe had texted making Max smile.

'It's not worth all the trouble.' Max replied before she too left the diner to take the bus back to campus while feeling a bit better.
