A/N: Yup, your eyes do not deceive you, it is a brand-new story! Now, I know I've already started a new story, a crossover of Calvin and Hobbes and Dragon Ball Z, please go over and read the chapter and consider leaving a review if you haven't already, but my brother and I were talking, and he gave me this idea for a sort of MHA/Ranma ½ AU sort of crossover. So, I decided to write it and here it is. I hope you like it.
Disclaimer: I don't own My Hero Academia, Ranma ½, or Bakugan!
Awakening the Dragon
Izuku Midoriya was not having a good day. As a matter of fact, he wasn't having a good life. For context about his life, Izuku was born into a world where eighty percent of the world's total population has a superpower of some sort. The power usually manifests when a person reaches the age of four years old with a few rare late bloomers who typically manifest a quirk two or three years later due to not having met the requirements for their power to awaken. These powers, or quirks, as they're called, can be as simple as being able to change the color and texture of one's skin in order to camouflage like an octopus, to being extremely powerful like being able to lift three thousand times one's weight or having control over a certain elemental power! Fire, earth, water, electricity, things like that.
And as a result of all of these quirks manifesting, the nations of the world created a new profession to try and mitigate the number of vigilantes taking justice into their own hands. And so began the age of Pro Heroes. Like most children, Izuku grew up idolizing pro heroes, particularly the Number One Hero in Japan, All Might, and wanted to become a Pro Hero so he, like his idol, could save everyone with a smile on his face. However, his dream would be cruelly ripped away from him when, at the age of four, his mother took him to a quirk doctor where they found out…
Izuku will NEVER develop a quirk in his life.
You see, while eighty percent of the world's population has a quirk of some kind, be it a weak or useless quirk or a powerful and ultra heroic quirk or even a villainous quirk, and I use the term 'villainous' extremely loosely, there is still the rare twenty percent of the population who are born without any quirk at all. Doctor's usually look for a specific sign to determine the likelihood of being quirkless, but the one sign that is usually referred to is the number of joints in a person's pinky toe. The theory is that if someone has a single joint in their pinky toe, then they'll develop a quirk once they meet the necessary requirements to manifest it. But if they have two joints in their pinky toe, it means that that person will be forever quirkless.
Although, there is some debate among the medical community about the validity of that particular theory since some medical specialists and medical heroes, such as the Youthful Heroine: Recovery Girl, have met individuals that have two toe joints who ended up developing a quirk much later in their lives. Usually in their mid to late teens and early twenties. But I digress.
Because of his quirklessness, Izuku has been on the receiving end of much bullying and harassment from those of his age group and even several adults. Mostly teachers and staff in his school district and some of the more corrupt police officers. And this has caused him to lose almost all of his trust in adults and the police in general. The only ones who seem to not care that he's quirkless include his own mother, Inko Midoriya, who loves him very much and nurtures him like a real mother should, his godmother, Mitsuki Bakugo, who is the mother of his former childhood friend-turned-bully, and this young woman he met named Yu Takeyama who Izuku found out is actually a very new hero who will be debuting very soon. There was another childhood friend of his who, unfortunately, had to leave with her father on a martial arts training trip back when he was six, but he had a feeling in his gut that they would be reuniting sometime very soon.
Yet, in spite of all of the bullying and abuse that he has suffered, Izuku Midoriya has never given up on his dream of becoming a Pro Hero and saving people with a smile just like All Might does. He even put his greatest weapon to work in order to prepare for this. And that weapon is his mind. Izuku quickly found out that he has a knack for analysis and strategy as he has started analyzing and breaking down the quirks of various pros and villains and has compiled a total of fourteen notebooks of information about them. He has yet to go back and reorganize his notes, but he has made sure that they're all encrypted in order to keep the information out of the wrong hands.
But today was an especially tough day. After witnessing Yu's debut as her hero persona, Mt. Lady, he arrived at school and was mocked by his classmates and teachers for choosing to enroll in UA for the hero course with Katsuki even threatening him again for making his choice. Of course, Izuku didn't plan to just jump right into the hero course. His plan was to start off in General Education and earn himself a spot in the hero course through the Sports Festival. As such, he started doing some physical training in secret in order to slowly build up his strength, speed, flexibility, and just about every other aspect that revolved around fighting and rescue.
Things only got worse for him once school was let out. Katsuki and his cronies cornered Izuku after school and proceeded to beat him to near death using their quirks all while degrading him and calling him several racial slurs that were thought up for quirkless people. Things like 'blank' and 'null' just to name a couple. But Izuku didn't fight back… not until Katsuki said something that really set him off and made him realize something.
"You want to be a hero? Then take my advice… and jump off a roof and pray that you get a quirk in the next life! Save the old bitch the trouble of offing you herself!" Katsuki had said.
And that was when Izuku realized that his biggest tormentor was no friend of his, nor was he a future hero.
He is a villain in the making! And Izuku wouldn't let him, or his cronies, harm another innocent ever again!
To the surprise of the bullies, the bloody and battered greenette had sprung to his feet and unleashed martial arts hell upon them! He punched the goon with stretchy eyeballs for his quirk in the gut, which had comically caused the guy's eyeballs to pop out of their sockets, spin-kicked the guy who could extend his fingers, breaking a few in the process, and Katsuki? Well…
Let's just say he'll think twice before he tries to mess with Izuku ever again.
Then again, with his pride and overinflated ego, he may just play it off as our favorite hero nerd getting lucky and catching him off guard.
After driving off his bullies, Izuku started the long, painful walk home. Painful because of his injuries which would no doubt slow him down, and it was already a long walk from the school to the train station where he'd then have to board a train and walk even further to get back home to his and his mother's apartment!
Now, here's where things get interesting.
As Izuku was about to walk through a tunnel that leads to his apartment, he didn't think anything bad would happen. He's traveled through that tunnel hundreds of times before. What he didn't count on was suddenly being struck in the back by something that felt about the size of a softball, as he saw a flash of light before everything went black. When he opened his eyes, he saw that he was in the midst of a forest that he didn't recognize. Now, one might say that all forests look alike, but Izuku has been to the woods on the outskirts of his hometown so many times growing up that he knows them like the back of his hand. So, he knows that he's in a different place.
"Ah man, did I get hit by a teleportation quirk or something?" Izuku wondered. "I'm not happy about being sent to who knows where, but that's a quirk that I'd really love to analyze. Well, either way, I might as well look around and see if I can find somebody who can help."
He stood up and dusted himself off before he started walking in a random direction. As he walked, he took note of several environmental differences that might give him a clue to where he is. Specifically, he found that he had been transported to a forest of bamboo trees.
"Bamboo doesn't grow naturally in Japan. Does that mean that I've been sent to China?" Izuku asked himself.
But then he started panicking!
"Ah man! I'm all the way in China and Mom has no idea where I am! She's gonna be so worried and when Aunty Mitsuki finds out that I didn't make it home, she is gonna be pissed!" exclaimed Izuku.
Now with an even greater reason to find a way home, Izuku started walking faster until he heard a sound. It sounded like fists hitting flesh and the sounds of grunts. Like the kinds you hear fighters make when they attack. He jogged towards the sounds until he came across a clearing in the woods with stone pools scattered about. The pools were all elevated from the ground and had a few bamboo trees growing out of them. Upon closer examination, there were words in the Chinese language carved into the base of each pool. Fortunately for Izuku, though, he took the time to learn and become fluent in many different languages including his native language, Japanese, along with English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Polish. So, he could read and understand these words just fine.
One pool had the word 'man' carved into the base. He also found a pool for 'girl', 'cat', 'duck', 'pig', 'panda', 'horse'. 'dragon', and 'yeti-riding-bull-carrying-crane-and-eel'. And that last one really confused him.
"I've never seen a place like this on any map. As a matter of fact, I don't think this place has ever been mentioned in any Chinese Geography book." Izuku said to himself.
He was startled from his thoughts when he heard a man say, "Fight like you mean it, girl!", before a female voice replied, "Shut up, old man! I don't care what you think, I'm gonna prove to you that girls aren't weak!".
Voices that were immediately recognized by Izuku.
"Those voices! Could it be?"
Izuku looked up and saw two people fighting as they balanced on the bamboo poles. One of them was a man who appeared to be in his early to mid-forties with beady black eyes. He was wearing a dirty white karate gi with no shoes, a white bandana on his head, and a pair of glasses. Across from him was a beautiful young woman who Izuku recognized anywhere.
She stood at about around Izuku's height, which isn't saying much since Izuku himself is a little short for his age, and she was clearly of Japanese ancestry in spite of her less-than-Japanese features. She has long fiery red hair with a single pigtail, striking ocean blue eyes, and porcelain skin. In spite of her short stature, she has an athletic yet curvy figure that would make most girls in their age group green with envy. She was currently wearing a Chinese qipao style shirt and pants with slipper-like shoes.
"Ranko? Mister Genma?" gasped Izuku.
And as the girl, now known as Ranko, kicked her father off the pole and into the pool below him, she looked down and smiled brightly as she saw her childhood friend.
"Well, if it isn't the walking broccoli himself! How ya been, man?" Ranko greeted.
"Well, it hasn't been easy since you left." Izuku responded.
"Let me guess, Katsuki's still being a prick?" Ranko guessed.
Izuku sheepishly scratched the back of his head and replied, "He has, but let's just say that I finally had enough of his attitude and… fought back.".
Ranko laughed and said, "Oh my god, you finally stood up to him and his lackeys? Damn, I wish I had been there! I could have recorded it for future generations! Hey, Pop, look who's-".
But before Ranko could finish that sentence, she saw a panda bear with her father's beady eyes leap out of the pool he'd been knocked into before she was kicked in the face and sent careening off of the bamboo pole that she'd been standing on… right into Izuku which knocked both of them into their own individual pools of water!
Ranko was the first to surface and began to panic as she saw her reflection in the water. She now had a pair of curved horns growing out of her forehead, and from what she could feel, she was now a good foot and a half taller than she used to be.
"You sore loser! What did you do to me!?" Ranko demanded in outrage as she scrambled out of the water.
She looked like she was ready to throttle the panda who was her old man and though Genma wouldn't say it out loud, his daughter's new horns coupled with her increased height actually intimidated him a great deal. But as Ranko took a step to try and skin her father alive, she suddenly realized something.
"Oh my god, this isn't the time for this! Izuku!" panicked Ranko.
"Growf?" the now panda Genma growled in question.
"Izuku was here! You knocked me into him and sent him into one of the pools, you stupid panda!" Ranko exclaimed before looking into the pool she saw ripples in. "Izuku! Where are you? Izuku!"
By this point, Genma was extremely nervous, and rightfully so. He remembered meeting Izuku and his mother, Inko, a long time ago. Last he saw her, Inko was a renowned lawyer who has never lost a case in her entire career. If he caused her only son to drown, she'd have him locked up for life in the most inescapable prison in the world while stripping him of his guardianship rights over Ranko. And that's if she didn't decide to just skin him alive and turn him into panda steaks on the spot!
Ranko gasped as she saw bubbles and said, "Get ready! I think he's coming up!".
They both backed up and got ready to help the green haired boy onto shore, but what they saw come out of the water wasn't the boy with green hair and freckles that they know and Ranko loves.
Though she doesn't know that last part yet.
Out of the spring rose a beast in place of young Midoriya that had both of the transformed Saotome's gaping in awe and slight fear. It was a dragon! *The dragon has the body of a wyvern with clawed wings and feet, a long neck, a slender body, and a long, sharp horn at the end of its snout. It has small spikes along its back. Its body, rather than having traditional scales like modern day reptiles, is covered almost head to toe in large plates that appear to be made of a chitinous or carotene type of material which makes them durable enough to take a hit while also being light enough that they don't hinder flight. The majority of its body scales appear to be crimson red while its arms, legs, and wings appear to be darker red. It has a silver underbelly, red eyes with slit pupils, and the sparse triangular markings on its body along with its horn all appear to be a beige color.*
The dragon groaned in Izuku's voice, showing Genma and Ranko that this dragon IS Izuku Midoriya, before trying to stand up and falling back into the spring he had just crawled out of. He quickly surfaced and scrambled back onto land again… only to finally see his clawed fingers and how he no longer had human hands.
"It can't be!" gasped Izuku.
He quickly turned around, almost swatting Genma with his tail in the process, and looked into his reflection in the spring. A scream that sounded more like a mighty roar could be heard all across China that day as Izuku was quickly overtaken by his senses of fear and panic. But then, who can blame him?
I mean, turning into a dragon?
Boy, that's a way to start your day.
***...To Be Continued…***
Ending A/N: And that's the end of this chapter! Now, I'm still ironing out the details of the story's plot, but I'm sure I can come up with something good. Although, I will admit that this story is not likely to get frequent uploads, so, don't be expecting an upload every week or something like that, because I do not know when I will be able to update this story in the future! Okay? Okay, thank you for understanding. So, as you can probably tell, in this A/U, Ranma was born a girl and named Ranko rather than being born a boy. And instead of having a similar quirk to her canon counterpart, Ranko fell into the Spring of Drowned Oni thus giving her an Oni transformation. Not much difference from her human form, but there's more to this form of hers than meets the eye. But this begs the questions… How is there a cursed spring of drowned dragonoid in Jusenkyo? How does Ranko know Izuku? And what does this mean for our plucky green hero? All these questions and more will be answered on the next exciting chapter of The Oni Girl and the Dragon! Thanks for reading, and I'll see you next time, my hatchlings.
*His dragon form is basically Drago from Bakugan Battle Brawlers(NOT BATTLE PLANET!), but with the color scheme of Evil Twin Dragonoid when Contestir uses his Evil Copy ability.*
