She knew she wasn't completely crazy.
Nate Jacobs was in love with her, and she was in love with him. She wanted to shout it from the rooftops, down the hallways, over the phone to Maddy as she recounted all of Nate's romantic acts to win her back.
I'm so ashamed of it but must admit the sleepless nights I've had about the boy.
She was going crazy. He was making her crazy. They were making her crazy.
Couldn't he see that Maddy was all wrong for him? Couldn't she see that Nate was no good for her? Couldn't they see that Cassie was the answer for him?
How could Nate love Maddy, when he had held her in his arms professing his love for Cassie?
How could she be Maddy's friend and do what she was doing? She had tried to find many ways to justify her actions and her deception. The truth was her heart had been at Nate's mercy since that car ride. She was a prisoner to his heart.
"I don't even want to play football, but it's just what everyone expects of me."
"What do you want to be?" She had asked him softly. Her voice was always so soft and delicate, soothing.
"I don't know." And he had looked into her eyes, searching for her soul, for answers, for everything. "Would you come with me?"
"Where?"
"Wherever I go. College or not." And then Cassie had looked into his eyes, searching for his soul, for answers, for the truth.
How far would you go for me, Cassie?
"If you want me to." And Nate replayed his vision, his calling, his future with Cassie. It felt right. It felt good to have someone complement every particle of you.
"What do you want to be?" He had asked one Saturday morning, as they stood under the warm spray of his shower.
"Loved." And she had giggled, and he had smiled, and she had stood on the tip of her toes and he had kissed her.
He melts my foolish heart in every single scene although I'm quite aware that here and there are traces of the cad.
