Chapter 11: The Harvest Part Two
*****Almost where We Left Off*****
Buffy could sense the malevolence when they drove into Sunnydale. They were in a military convoy, her dad and Daniel in the front seat while she was in the back with and Teal'c. Giles was following in another car behind them with Sam.
"Where should we go first? The Watcher's house? Rupert gave me the address," Jack said.
"It would be better to find the slayer, Kendra," Buffy said. "She's the one I want to help, and the watcher won't like interference. I need to win her over first."
Jack called Sam in the other car since Giles was driving, asking her opinion.
Sam used her phone to check for places students might be.
"There was a football game at the high school that just got out," she read. "There's some type of dance club called the Bronze."
"Hmmm, well, which is closer to where we are now?" Jack asked.
"The high school. The Bronze is toward the middle of town," Sam said.
"Plus, there could be students still cleaning up at the school from the game," Daniel said.
Buffy laughed. "Teenagers don't actually do that, but, yes, if it's closer, let's stop there," she agreed.
When they pulled up, they saw light at one end and went there.
"I can't believe they leave the school unlocked," Jack said as he opened the door for his sister.
They walked in and followed the light.
Daniel grinned. "It's the library. Clearly, late night studying going on," he said, pleased.
"That is heartening," Giles added.
Buffy laughed. "Much different than any school I've ever went to," she said. "I'd rather study at a coffee shop."
When they went in, Buffy immediately went on alert as she detected drama.
"What's with the hot blondes all being soulless killers?" the teenage boy asked in bemusement as she entered the library with all the adults a step behind her.
The blonde said, "She's not one of mine."
"No, I'm not a vampire. I'm a vampire slayer," Buffy declared.
"Buffy," her father chided softly.
"Slayer!" the blonde said, turning.
She was in vamp face, and Buffy was ready for a fight. However, the boy behind her stabbed the vamp in the back with a stake.
"Damn!" the other girl said, a pretty brunette.
"Impressive," Buffy said, smiling.
The girl ran to the boy, clutching him.
Jack moved closer. "So, it's clear that you all are in the know about the monsters in this town," he said to the two teens.
"This town is on a hellmouth," Jesse said.
"This town is seriously messed up," Cordelia muttered, still trying to come to grips with what just happened. She realized that she was still clutching Jesse's hand and released it.
"Do you happen to know Kendra?" Buffy asked, making a guess.
"Yes," Jesse said. "She's the vampire slayer, so why did you lie and say you were?"
"Because I am one," Buffy said. "I was nearly murdered by a wanna-be rapist at a hospital in Los Angeles—at least long enough for my heart to stop. That's why she was called."
"God, and I was thinking of moving to Los Angeles after graduation," Cordelia said. "No place is sacred anymore."
"Where can we find Kendra?" Jack asked.
"She's patrolling graveyards or at the Bronze since that's prime hunting ground for vampires," Jesse said.
"The Bronze? Vampires hang out at the only cool place in town?" Cordelia asked in outrage.
"Sorry but yeah," Jesse said.
"God, I hate this town," she said.
Buffy found the girl amusing and grinned. "Well, why don't I make introductions?" she asked. Then she introduced her dad and her team and learned their names.
"I'm glad that the military is here," Cordelia said. "I feel safer already." She looked at Sam curiously. "You're awfully pretty for a military person. How do you balance working with so many men and staying so beautiful?"
Sam's mouth fell open as the strange question, and Jack snickered.
"Yes, Major, tell us how you stay so beautiful," Jack told her.
"Let's go to the Bronze," Sam said, ignoring the teenager as she turned toward the exit.
"What? Is it a military secret?" Cordelia asked, following them.
"You probably should do your homework at home," Jesse said. "Let me walk you to your car."
They waited out front for the teenage boy as Jack didn't want him wandering around at night.
Jesse smiled. "Oh, you waited for me. Cool," he said.
"This town is not safe to be at night," Jack said.
"Plus, we would like to know what all you know about the supernatural," Giles added. "I'm Rupert Giles, Buffy's watcher."
"Is there no American watchers? I've been thinking that might be a worthy job when I get older," he said.
Giles smiled, pleased. "Well, there are a few but not many," he said.
"Let's get into a vehicle and head to wherever Kendra might be," Jack said.
This ended up with Giles getting into the back seat of Jack's military vehicle while Buffy got into the front. The other three went to the other.
Jesse shared how they had run into Kendra over the summer and Xander's growing knowledge.
"Eventually, we saw her kill a vampire," Jesse shared.
"Slay. We use the term slay because we're slayers, not executors killing humans," Buffy corrected.
"Oh, sorry," Jesse said. "We've tried to get Kendra to let us help her—be her backup, but she says no. Her watcher isn't very nice."
"Tradition states the slayer must work alone," Giles explained.
"My dad doesn't let me slay alone anymore," Buffy shared. "He works with an elite military team. Major Sam Carter and Mr. T especially are incredible fighters."
"Willow and I are taking lessons to learn how to fight: Karate and Tae Kwon Do," Jesse told him.
"That's an excellent idea," Buffy said, beaming her approval. "I have two close friends that have learned my secret. Dad says I can take them slaying sometime."
"Just as an observer," Jack added quickly. "The slaying is left to professionals."
"If I had done that, Cordelia could be dead," Jesse pointed out.
"You were most composed," Giles observed. "It was very good of you."
"Have you ever considered a career in the military?" Jack asked.
Jesse grinned. "No way. My parents would never forgive me. They're kind of major tree hugger liberals who see the military as American Imperialism set to impose its will on the global populace," he told them.
"What?" Jack asked, outraged. "That's the most insane thing I've ever heard!"
"Really, Dad? The most insane thing?" Buffy asked, grinning at him.
"Well, about the military it is," Jack clarified.
"Now, Xander might be interested. His Dad actually was in the Army for four years as he went to college on the GI Bill," Jesse told them.
"So you have two best friends that know what you know?" Giles asked.
Jesse told them about Willow, their brain and Xander, his best guy friend. "Xander and Willow met in Kindergarten, and I moved here when we were a bit older," he said. "It's always been just the three of us. Xander and I would be lost without our Willow."
"I had three or four friends like that when I was young," Jack said. "They're still back in my hometown. We always try to be together for the Super Bowl if I'm not on a mission somewhere. Then there's my team. They're always there for me."
Jesse thought the new slayer was pretty cool. She was much more approachable than Kendra, and he knew that Willow would really like her.
They finally arrived at the Bronze, and Jesse found Kendra at a table with Willow and Xander.
Willow was extremely excited to meet her.
"Oh, that's so amazing! Two of you!" Willow exclaimed.
"You won't believe this, Will, but I actually slayed a vampire saving Cordelia Chase's life!" Jesse bragged.
"No way!" Xander exclaimed in shock.
"Yes, way," Buffy said, smiling at the teenage boy. "He was very brave."
"You were totally right about being able to do it from the backside if I used enough force," Jesse said.
"Really?" Xander asked, grinning. "I bet Cordy was shocked."
"She actually hugged me. This might be the best night of my life. Even better when she showed me her vacation pictures," Jesse said with a happy sigh.
"Maybe she'll dance with you next time," Willow said. Then she looked at Buffy to explain. "Xander and I are founding members of the 'We Hate Cordelia Chase' club. Xander is president. She's a mean bully, but Jesse loves a challenge."
"He's a glutton for punishment," Xander said, grinning.
"Nothing wrong with loyalty," Jack said, enjoying the teens.
Kendra was noticeably silent, though, and Giles asked if they could head to her house.
"I'd like to meet your watcher," Giles told her.
"Of course," she said. "Then I must patrol."
They left right before Luke entered and lured two to his master's side.
"Tomorrow, I will be free," his master said. "Where is Darla?"
"I have not seen her," he admitted.
"There is a slayer in this town. We must kill the slayer, so I can be free," the Master said. "She will interfere. Nothing can. If Darla doesn't return soon, we must assume she is dead."
"I agree," Luke said. "It will be done as you said." He took several vampires and went out to hunt for the slayer.
At Kendra's home, Sam the watcher met the slayer of Rupert Giles.
"I am sorry that I did not hear your slayer survived," he said, speaking to Giles and ignoring Buffy after an initial glance.
"It is something that has never happened before," Giles said. "I was most pleased to be given a slayer. Buffy trains with her father's elite military team and is extremely gifted."
"Kendra trains alone with me, and she, too, is extremely gifted," Sam said.
"So why don't we let the watchers talk about their nerd stuff and go patrol?" Buffy said to Kendra.
"That is acceptable," Kendra said. She glanced at her watcher who nodded.
"I'll stay here," Daniel told Jack. "I want to see what books he has, and I have some questions."
"Of course, you do," Jack said. "Have fun."
They left, and Sam looked at Giles in disapproval. "Does the Council know that you allow civilians to aid your slayer?" he asked.
"Jack isn't a civilian," Daniel said. "He is a combat veteran, and the best the Air Force has to offer with multiple medals for his service and valor."
"The Council knows that Buffy's father is a rising star in the military, and he will not allow her to be in danger without backup," Giles explained.
"It is not our way," Sam said.
"Letting a teenage girl go into danger until they're dead within a year is not the way of the United States military," Daniel informed him.
"It is time the Council change with the times," Giles said to the other watcher. "Seeing a slayer as a tool is barbaric. They are in our care, and we are here to make sure Kendra survives this Harvest."
"She is empowered to do so," Sam said.
"Yes, well, it won't hurt for her to have backup," Giles pointed out.
The two slayers in discussion were patrolling a nearby cemetery. Buffy was stoked to be with another slayer and talked a mile a minute to Kendra, who had a bit of trouble keeping up.
"We totally have to spar tomorrow," Buffy said. "Mr. T is the one who can give me a real workout, but I bet you will be even better than he is."
"That sounds like fun," Kendra agreed, smiling at the very warm and friendly slayer.
A pair of demons jumped out in front of them. Jack and Carter watched as the two slayers made short work of the ferocious monsters. Teal'c smiled but was disappointed there wasn't much for him to do.
However, he soon got a lesson in the hellmouth as they traveled to six cemeteries in two hours, killing many monsters. He and his teammates took down two demons and several vampires.
"This is most satisfying," he commented.
"What is he?" Kendra asked Buffy as they made it to the seventh graveyard.
"He's got a bit of nonhuman blood in him," Buffy told her as that was an explanation easy for someone like her to except.
"Does the military know?" Kendra asked.
"They know he's special and a great fighter," Buffy said. "It's enough. Dad, of course, probably knows as he and Mr. T are very close."
Kendra nodded, deciding that she would not tell her watcher as he might not understand. However, she liked knowing that a human with tainted blood could choose to do good.
Was it fate or chance that caused them to not cross Luke and his vampires the rest of the night?
Luke gathered a few more bodies to feed his master, missing the slayers entirely.
*****The Next Day*****
The team was staying in the town's only bed and breakfast. It had been very late when they picked up Giles and Daniel. They were debriefing after they ate.
"This town is so fun!" Buffy said with enthusiasm. "Kendra says that normally she doesn't get to all the cemeteries in one night since there's like a dozen. Having me allowed her to."
"I cannot believe how many cemeteries this small town has," Daniel said.
"I cannot believe the sheer volume of vampires we came across," Carter said.
"It is impressive," Giles agreed as Buffy and Jack had already filled him and Daniel in. "However, as this is a hellmouth, not terribly surprising."
"I am still surprised," Jack said. "We killed thirty hostiles in one night. I can't believe the death rate in this town isn't higher."
"I believe that the vampires don't slaughter all the time that the feed," Carter remarked. "It would explain the volume."
"It is possible that theirs something in town keeping them in check," Giles said. "It could be this Master vampire or another source with power to do so."
"That's scary to think about," Jack said, frowning.
"Indeed," Teal'c agreed.
"Kendra did sense that Teal'c was different," Buffy told Giles.
"What did you say?" Jack asked.
"That he had a bit of nonhuman blood in him," she said. "Which is the truth since he has the symbiote. Of course, she assumed I meant demon."
"I do not like anyone thinking I might be anything like the creatures we kill," Teal'c said, unhappy.
"You're not anything like those demons, T," Buffy said. "But I couldn't very well tell her you're an alien carrying an evil alien baby in your stomach."
Giles' eyes widened as he looked between his slayer and Teal'c with shock. "Excuse me?" he asked.
Buffy groaned. "Oh, crap in a stick! I forgot that Giles doesn't know everything!" she exclaimed.
"Buffy, you cannot do that kind of thing—ever!" Jack said. "I can be court martialed for blabbing. I have to trust that you can keep a secret that is a part of our country's national security!"
Buffy grimaced, feeling bad. "I am so sorry. Giles knows some stuff, and I just forgot. It won't happen again," she said.
"Rupert, we will need you to sign more papers when we return back home," Samantha Carter told him.
"I will gladly do so if you answer my questions," Giles said with a smile.
"Of course," she said, returning his smile. She would be glad that he would be completely read in.
An hour later, they were back at Kendra's house. Buffy was in her backyard, and they were going to spare.
Kendra had heard about Buffy Summers when she first became the slayer. In fact, she had learned everything she could about her predecessor when they arrived in the United States. She knew that Buffy had fought and killed a master vampire without much training. Her life had been brief but glorious as far as the Council was concerned. It was strange that no one told her that the slayer was still alive. Her watcher claimed he didn't know, but Kendra wasn't so sure she believed him. She couldn't help but notice how different Buffy was to her as well as how her own watcher treated her. The warmth between all the adults toward Buffy was odd for Kendra to observe. Her watcher was a kind man, but he had never hugged her. Although she didn't see Buffy hug him, she did see Buffy hug the large African as well as touch her watcher's arm in a friendly gesture.
When they began to spar, Kendra realized Buffy was definitely a better fighter. She struggled to keep up with the slayer that kept changing her form multiple times. It made Kendra dizzy until she was knocked on her back.
"That was great!" Buffy enthused, reaching down to give her a hand up. "You are such a good fighter."
"But you still beat me," Kendra said.
"Yes, well, I train with Marines and Mr. T," Buffy said with a shrug. "Also, I have several months on you."
"I've been training nearly my entire life," Kendra said.
"But you've not had anyone to fight with until you came here, right?" Buffy asked. "There's a lot of newbie vamps here, so not much of a challenge. I bet if you keep fighting those demons, you'll be stronger in no time."
Kendra nodded, realizing that it made sense.
Jack couldn't help but feel proud of his daughter. She was definitely better than this slayer, and Giles was writing it all down in his little book.
"Make sure you write that it just took Buffy twenty minutes to beat her in hand-to-hand," Jack told him in a low voice.
Giles had a small smile on his face as he took notes in his journal.
Later, that night, however, they had no more reason to smile.
Sam, Kendra's watcher, insisted that Buffy and her team patrol the town while Kendra focused on stopping the Harvest.
"She is the head slayer as the line goes through her now," he said.
Clearly, he had been unhappy to see Buffy beat his slayer and wanted to exert his authority.
"You are being lame," Buffy said, frowning. "By working together last night, Kendra and I were able to hit all the cemeteries in this town, saving many lives."
"She's right. It is definitely better that they work together," Giles said.
"Your slayer will be leaving, however, and Kendra must learn to deal with major things alone," he said.
"But she doesn't have to," Buffy said, getting angry. "Kendra, tell him that I am right!"
Kendra knew Buffy was, however, respect and obedience had been drilled into her at a very young age. She would never dream of going against her watcher.
"I must do what I am told as he is the watcher," she said. "I am just the slayer."
"You have it backwards!" Buffy said. "You are the slayer. He is just the watcher! The power is yours, and he is nothing without you! Without him, you are still the slayer!"
"That's enough, Buffy," Giles said, seeing that Kendra's watcher was beginning to get angry. "We can give Kendra a phone, and she can call us if she feels we are needed. We won't be that far away as this town isn't that big."
"That is permissible," Sam the watcher said.
Carter gave her the cell phone she carried. "Just push the two on it, and it will call Buffy's dad, Colonel O'Neill."
"Thank you," Kendra said, putting the phone in her back pocket that did not have a stake in it.
It was beginning to get dark, so they went outside. Buffy agreed to take the other side of town while Kendra went the opposite direction, planning to hit the Bronze on her route.
An hour later, she had made her way to the Bronze, finding the door barred. It was strange, so she made her way around the side, looking for a way inside.
That's when she saw Xander. He fell from a small window.
"What are you doing?" she asked him.
"Kendra! Thank God! I was just going to get you!" Xander exclaimed.
"Why didn't you use the front door?" she asked.
"I couldn't. I was in the bathroom when the screaming began," he shared. "Will and Jesse are inside, and there was a large group of vampires that came in. Two barred the front door, and the others are taking people to this giant vampire who is draining them. It's insane!"
Kendra reached for her phone. "Here's a phone to call the other slayer, Buffy. Hit two on it and tell them to get her here. You wait for them out front. I'm sure they can figure out how to get in as they are military. I'll go in the way you came out."
"It's the men's room," Xander said, opening the flip phone and pushing two on it as she hopped up high to catch the window ledge.
He was relieved that she seemed to get inside easily and told the guy answering the other end what was happening.
Kendra found the club in chaos as the stage had no band playing as normal, but there stood a very large man, no, a vampire, who had a girl in his arms. The red hair of the teenage girl gave Kendra a moment of disquiet. She thought she knew her.
Kendra moved quickly to save the girl as a teenage boy confirmed her fear as he screamed, "Willow!"
Kendra made it to the stage just as Willow was thrown off it and into her best friend's arms. She felt sick and angry at her inability to save her first female friend from harm.
Jesse looked down at Willow's still body in horror.
Willow was dead.
*****To Be Continued*****
I'm sorry if this upsets you. It was always going to be Willow. Unlike my other stories that are ending, this story will go on for a while. It will go on without our favorite redhead. Why? Because I haven't written a story like this before, I wanted a challenge. How will her death change things? Reviews, not flames, are greatly appreciated. I did warn you THREE DIFFERENT TIMES that I was killing of a main character. I hope you still want to read about what comes next!
