Oh boy was this one a doozy to write. I've only ever done one other story that covers I-island and well, I'm not afraid to say that it was pretty trash, but a valuable learning experience which is I haven't deleted it, despite how much I've done from when I did that. Part of the lessons I learned from that is that one needs proper planning, so this is a reminder that once this arc is done, it will be going on hiatus. And with the notes I have for it as they are, it shouldn't take more than 4 chapters(including this), if not less to cover everything.
Chapter 36: Tower Takeover
With the party in full swing, it was easy for All Might to enter along with his old friend, David. Sure, they were spotted, but with a reception hall as large as this, filled with people that understood restraint, none that saw him blurted out that All Might was present. Besides, he wasn't the only hero present as All Might spotted many pros from across the world present, some in formal wear but most having decided, like him to attend in their costumes.
Some were faces he recognized, having met or had the chance to work with them over his many years as a hero, others were mainly figures that like himself, were famous so he knew of them. though one face he had been surprised to see was Ingenium. NO, not Ingenium, Iida Tensei. His smile strained as he looked at the man, sat in a wheelchair, a relatively basic model, and evening wear, you would have never guessed that he was once a hero famed for his speed.
He knew that the Iida's got invites to these things, many pro-hero families of note did, but with the recent tragedies that had struck them, if anything, he would have imagined their father would have attended. He couldn't see his face clearly from where he was, but perhaps he could break from David and talk with him for a bit.
" Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to I-expo's opening night's reception we at I-island hope you enjoy yourselves but I believe that we could make the night much lively if we got All Might up here to say a few words." His plans were stopped when one of the hosts of their evening revealed his presence for all to hear. Now the entire room was looking his way.
" Of I didn't misspeak, the number one hero is visiting us tonight, so let's give him a hand of applause." The man continued, and part of All Might wanted to try and dash out just to see how he'd play off his apparent mistake, but he wasn't young anymore. If anything, he'll leave such pranks to young Uraraka should the urge strike. " Please, join us on the stage."
Outside, Midoriya stood next to Swordkill, mask in place and rifle checked to ensure it was properly loaded and that its safety was still one, after all, he wasn't planning on shooting anyone. "Well, if we needed any more proof, he was inside, we got it." He noted. Though they had their guys in the security room watching the place via the 8 cameras inside the reception hall.
"Swordkill?" Wolfram tapped his earpiece.
" The system should be ours in 20 seconds." As it was the team coms, they heard that time limit and waited for the fun to start.
"Once the island is secure, I'll be breaking away from the group for a while to get what we came here for." Nine turned to Wolfram, who glanced at him over his shoulder.
"That being?" Nine didn't budge at the question. After all, they couldn't trust their partner to not try and take the data from them, even if to sell it to someone else for a quick payday.
"You don't need to know, only that it won't interfere with the base plan."
Wolfram gave him a rather threatening smile, but nothing more. "All right, keep your secrets."
" Thank you for inviting me, it's truly a pleasure to be here. Now, I hadn't planned on giving any speeches, but a hero is nothing if not flexible." All Might's speech was interrupted when their newly taken security system went into effect, followed by an automated voice clearing the board.
" This is an announcement from the I-island security system. We have received reports that an unknown chemical agent has been detected on the island. For security reasons, I-island will now enter high alert mode as the island is thoroughly inspected to track down and dispose of any unknown chemical agent sources. Residents and tourists are asked to return to their lounging and remain there till further instructions are given."
Every screen on the island, from the jumbo screen to TVs in shops, restaurants, and homes was forced to the emergency broadcast network, for those not near any of them, the hundreds of speakers built into buildings, or polls in public spaces served as the source for the announcement.
At the same time, seconds after the alarm sounded, the security drones were deployed in the dozens across the island, with people seeing them zipping by in groups of 10. As the number of robots on the streets kept increasing, stores open late were given strict instructions to clear them before they were automatically sealed, meanwhile business and buildings closed for the event went into lockdown mode as steel shutters started falling all over the place as people were quick to obey the instructions.
" Repeat, Residents and tourists are asked to return to their lounging and remain there till further instructions are given. Anyone remaining on the street after 10 minutes without proper authorization will violate the law. As a precautionary measure, most of the I-island buildings will not be sealed off." For the group of students that had been waiting for the Bakugo and Kirishima on the first floor of the central tower, the announcement came as a shock, made greater when the steel shutters came down and the way they came in sealed with a red warning alerting them it had been remotely sealed.
"What the?" Mineta asked.
"A chemical agent? You mean like chemical weapons from video games?" Kaminari added to that, worried as he wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but he sure as hell knew that if there was a chemical agent, the best target would be the very tower they were in, the same tower that had just sealed them in!
"How'd one even get through, it took us forever to get through baggage since they insisted on scanning everything like 3 times," Jiro asked, Yaoyorozu and Ashido were just as clueless as the odds of someone bringing in outside gum were low, how the hell would someone smuggle in something that dangerous?
"Something's wrong." Mellissa was thinking the same thing, but as she lived on the island, and was the daughter of its top researcher, she was privy to security details most weren't, and as far as she could recall, this didn't match up with the protocol was for a suspected chemical agent.
Meanwhile, within the reception hall, many of the scientists and higher-ranking workers of the island had similar thoughts, but before any could voice them and perhaps contact their security office to demand an explanation for this gross interruption of the night, the doors leading into the hall opened up and masked men with guns poured in.
Walking in after them like he owned the place, with Nine and Pyre at his sides, Wolfram made himself known. "In case you haven't caught on, the security system is under our control now. I know got a whole lot of heroes in here, but if one of you decides to try and step up," The red alert screens switched to show several live camera feeds of dozens of civilians, surrounded by security bots.
"Well, it won't take much for the security sentries to recognize the innocent people they have under their care as dangerous villains to be taken down, hard." Wolfram smiled as she saw people start sweating, fear clear in their eyes while most of the heroes glared at him for his brazen, evil acts but none dared challenge them.
"So, let's play nice for their sakes, all right?" He made sure that they focused not on the men with him that had guns, but on the feeds of the people that these heroes swore to protect. "Of course, when the lives of everyone on the island are in the balance, do you heroes really have any choice?" He saw many growling, glaring, or cursing under their breath.
It was an effective strategy to keep the heroes in line, but he couldn't take chances that one didn't sneak past that, or was just an idiot as while he didn't care about the collateral, it would be much easier to make it out of here with the goods if the entire world was merely after the greatest robber in history, rather than the man who killed hundreds of innocents from around the world.
To achieve that, he made the call on the com. "Do it."
From the floor, disks-like holes appeared, and before them glowing blue tape shot out, targeting the pros in the room and restraining them. "The emergency restraining devices? But who did they know about them?" One of the people asked as All Might tried to break free, and considering his strength, he very well could have.
This was why Wolfram reminded him of what would be a foolish idea by shooting his pistol into the air, causing several people to scream in shock. Walking up the stage, he trained his gun on All Might. "I wouldn't move if I were you. One step out of line and everyone in this room will be slaughtered."
"Villain-!" He didn't let the Symbol of Peace finish talking, rather he kicked him down onto his side.
"There, was that so hard?" Wolfram mocked him, before turning to the room and spotting their ' employer' David Shield among the hostages. "Go on, follow All Might's lead, and follow whatever I say. Do that and you'll get to walk out of here no worse for wear. A pretty good bargain, I would say." As Wolfram took control of the room, Pyre had also spotted the good doctor and had his thoughts about him.
'So there he is, David Shield in the flesh.' He seemed to be just as tall as he pictures, though most weren't of him in a suit and tie. He seemed nervous, though was that because he didn't trust Wolfram, or…because he hadn't known someone as powerful as All Might would be here? 'I would never imagine we would meet like this, but then again,'
Underneath his mask, Pyre smiled, his eyes glowing emerald. 'I never thought I'd become a villain. But I would love to hear why you turned your back on this world.'
"I'm not getting any signal, looks like my service has been completely cut off." Todoroki looked at his phone, the automated voice telling him that he was out of service range annoying as he knew that wasn't the case.
"You serious?" Mineta asked as Ashido had been checking the elevators one by one, but even the ones that would carry them around the building weren't working. "What the heck is going on here?" Mineta asked as Mellissa thought about the situation.
"This isn't right. This isn't the protocol for chemical weapons or leaks." She muttered as she marched up to a terminal, tapping the screen and inputting her password to access the system. "Let me see if I can't…"
"What are you doing?" Kaminari asked.
"I can't use my phone since the cell service on the island is being temporarily blocked, but I should be able to contact the security room and see what's going in, it's probably a…bug." She stopped, her eyes wide as she looked at the screen.
"Mellissa, you good?" Jiro asked her as Mellissa backed away from the terminal as if the thing would burn her.
"I can't contract them, I'm being blocked. That's not supposed to happen in any protocol." She uttered, not being able to understand what happened as her password and authorization were bounced- bounced! That was impossible! This was supposed to be something even low-level maintenance teams could do, so why couldn't she? The system didn't even finish scanning it, it just said denied and blocked her out from trying again.
Seeing her freak out didn't help the mood in the room, but Ashido wanted to believe that it wasn't that bad-well, it was bad but not the kind of bad she had gotten used to. "Man, must be a serious bug for all this to go down. How long would it take for IT to fix it?"
Mineta slapped his forehead. "With an island this complex and filled to the limit with tech, we could be stuck here for hours." He had seen how even the care they worked with was decked out with stuff and how the manager joked that they once had to open an hour late because an employee made the mistake of downloading a virus.
Oh sure, it was a low-level joint, and this was an island filled with egg-heads, but he had a feeling that a bug that could be a mess this bug would take time to find and deal with.
"Guys, let's go to the party." They looked towards Uraraka, who seemed to be much calmer than them, her eyes conveying a sense of gravity that reminded Todoroki of when he fought her at the Sports Festival.
"The party? I doubt this would be the time for it, Uraraka." Yaoyorozu wished to believe it was merely a serious fault in the system which they'll seek out, but the atmosphere didn't leave much room for merriment.
"All Might should be there, I don't think this is just a glitch or something, and we might need him to figure things out," Uraraka told them, and aside from Mellissa who already knew, the rest lit up upon hearing that.
"Wait, All Might's there?" Ashido asked.
"Oh, thank goodness, we've saved then." Mina took a breath of relief, so relaxed by that information that he didn't question or even notice that it was strange that Uraraka would just know that.
Uraraka turned towards their new friend. "Mellissa, is there any way we can get there with the building's elevators on lockdown?"
"We can use the emergency stairs, that'll at least get us close." Mellissa's face lost that confusion from before, getting into a better headspace as she gestured toward a door near the back.
"Then let's go," Uraraka stated. She didn't know why, but she felt like there was something wrong here, very wrong but they couldn't act on that till they better understood what was giving her this bad feeling.
"Boss, the place is secured." Nine walked up to Wolfram, the reception hall fully under their control as the pros remained retrained, while the rest were sitting or kneeling, scared for their lives as Wolfram's men walked around, faceless and ready to kill.
"Yeah, get going." Nine nodded before he walked out of the exit, David wondering about it as he didn't recall that being part of the plan, but perhaps it was to help sell the trick? He didn't have much time to dwell on it as Wolfram spoke up, speaking to the entire room.
"As for you all, smart to keep your heads down and follow orders. We don't want to waste bullets, and you all don't want to get hurt. So if we all play by the rules, we both get what we want." Wolfram's callous disregard for their lives only terrified the civilians more but also got deeper under the skin of the heroes as one yelled at him.
"What are you criminals after?" For his troubles, Wolfram kicked him onto his back.
"Is listening not a skill you've mastered, hero?" He asked the man, who glared back at him but kept his tongue. Wolfram could have put one between his eyes, but one should expect pros wouldn't be so easily cowed, so it wasn't something worth it.
"Leave him alone." Someone else spoke up, seemingly not deterred by their lack of power in the slightest.
"Oh," Wolfram turned to them, and was caught a little off guard by the fact it wasn't a costumed hero trying to order him around, but one of the civilian guests. As if to add to the outlandishness of it, it was one of the few handicapped people present, this one in a wheelchair. Laughing the man, he approached him.
"Well, I'm not sure if you're braze, or an idiot as what makes you think you have any room to make that request?" He waved his gun around, making others shiver at the sight of it, but the man he wished to threaten didn't even flinch, quite strange.
"Boss, I recognize him." Pyre approached him from behind.
"You do?" Pyre nodded, directing his gaze to Ingenium, though neither knew it with the mask on.
"He's not wearing his stuff, but I can make out the face of Ingenium," Pyre told him, the retired pro in question widening his eyes a little, though the moment of surprise passed as he could hear the accent on the masked goon's face, he Japanese, or at the very least, grew up in Japan. "There's no mistaking those eyes, they're just like back then."
"Ingenium, never heard of him." Wolfram hardly cared about it, unless of course, the man had a quirk that made up for his lack of mobility, perhaps a mental kind, or was it similar to his own?
Leaning in, Pyre was careful not to give away too much about him. "He's a Japanese pro, one of the fastest heroes on the planet. But that hero killer guy crippled him not too long ago, around May I believe." That drew Wolfram's attention, though his caution turned to mockery at hearing that.
"Is that right, well I will say this," Wolfram turned his back on the crippled speedster that offered no threat to them. "It seems it bravery that makes you act, rather than stupidity." As he walked off, Pyre remained close to Ingenium, the man feeling like the masked man was watching him, but why? His accent implied he was a Japanese citizen, so was he a criminal who wanted to kick him while he was done?
"What's up?" With the boss of the operation, he got word of something on his com.
"Yeah, got it." He replied as he turned his attention to a certain assistant. "Hey, tubby, you a researcher here?" He walked over.
"Y-yes, I am," Sam replied, nervous and scared. At least, he appeared to be but frankly, seeing him in person, Wolfram wouldn't be surprised if he was scared and nervous despite believing this was all part of his plan.
"Take this one up." He turned to one of his men who approached, Sam started to back away, though he didn't have anywhere to go when he was been kneeling next to a table.
"No please, I didn't do anything like you asked." He begged, scaring others who could only imagine what awaited him.
"Stop it!" That was, till David marched up to the group, he was some sweat on his brow, but if he was scared, Wolfram suspected he was managing it a hell of a lot better than his fat assistant. "That man is my assistant, what are you going to do with him?" The scientist and the ticket onto the island asked, playing his part pretty well.
"Oh, I can't believe I didn't see it earlier, but we're the presence of the famous David Shield." Wolfram turned his head to him, before smirking at the situation. Even if he hadn't had his plans, it would be quite strange to imagine how he with the power was under David, who did not. "Well, since you're worried, why don't you come along."
David was playing his part great, as Wolfram could have subtly threatened his daughter, and the man, believing he wasn't serious would act like he was, would bend and follow. But David didn't need him to say something like that, as he could read the room just fine and it was clear to everyone present that Wolfram wasn't asking him. "Fine." So he could agree without anyone suspecting anything other than David knowing that it was fruitless to resist now that he had outed himself.
"Boss, can we take another with us?" It wasn't just Wolfram, but the entire room that turned to the masked Pyre who laid a heated hand on Iida's shoulder, the man keeping his face passive as he the guy's hand felt like a hot rock even through the jacket and shirt he was wearing.
"You want the cripple?" Wolfram raised an eyebrow at the kid. This wasn't part of the plan and he was damn sure that whatever Nine went after was their real goal here. What, did they want to kidnap the guy off the island, or perhaps torture him for information about their native land's heroes?
"I can keep an eye on him, and these two no problem." Pyre nodded, the boss thinking it over, all while All Might could do nothing but watch as what seemed to be Iida being selected for a firing squad.
"That I don't doubt, all right. But you're pushing him." Wolfram eventually agreed, to which Pyre smiled but kept his excitement over this to himself. It wouldn't do to hop and yell out a yes.
Turning his gaze back to Iida, he walked behind the man's wheelchair. Seeing that it was a motorized one, but also came equipped with the standard handlebars. "Evening, Ingenium. I hope you wouldn't mind spending a little private time with us." Pyre looked down at him.
"Do I have a choice?" Iida asked.
"The real question is?" Pyre leaned close but didn't whisper. "Would you choose the alternative?" Even through the mask, Iida could feel the heat in the man's breath, and upon seeing the terrified people around them, knew his answer as he nodded. Gripping the handlebars, Pyre wheeled him out along with the good doctor and his assistant, Pyre only having one other person to act as a guard with him, not that he needed it.
Walking out of the reception hall, Pyre pushed Iida a little slower than he could, falling behind a little but not enough to be noticed. With the space between him and the other 3, he leaned his head towards Iida's ear and this time, he whispered. "We weren't able to have a proper conversation last time when you nearly busted us for the diamond job, but I was able to impart some wisdom on your brother."
"My brother…no, it can't be…" Iida started putting the pieces together, but that shouldn't have been possible. Sure, there was the heated touch, even the breath but there wasn't any reason or method that he would be here. But, only one person fits the description. "You."
Pyre brought a finger to his mask, shushing him before he could say more. "Me, but let's not blurt out names, it wouldn't be…safe, so let's wait till we have some private time, yeah?" Iida didn't know why he was here, or why he wanted to speak with him, but he hoped that someone would be able to do something to stop this and do what he had failed to do all those months ago, and capture this pyromaniac and torched his brother.
'Dave,' All Might, back in the reception hall, watched the group leaving under threat. Straining at his restraints, he found that they were tougher than he thought, enough that he wished that I-island for once made cheaper stuff. More than that, it was taking an effort to maintain his muscle form as these bands were squeezing on him. 'I have to subdue these villains and get the system back online, but how much time do I even have left?'
'I have to find a way because I am here! The Symbol of Peace!' Still, he struggled as he tried to figure out a means out of this. If he could just break the restraints and take out the villains present, maybe he could make it to the outside of the building, he knew that the security was on the upper levels, and he could get up there in seconds.
Whatever plans he had came to a pause as he noticed a patch of light in front of him, one that blinked in and out of existence. Was one of the lights flickering? Looking up, he saw that it wasn't a mere light, but his successor flashing her phone's flashlight at him. 'Wait, young Uraraka?'
As this was all happening, Nine reached the 138th floor, the server room. Stepping out of the elevator, Nine saw that the entire space was filled with massive servers, built into 3 levels. "All right, I've made it, you can shut down the elevator till I'm done." He informed the man manning the security terminal, the door to the elevator closing behind him and the overhead screen going back to red.
" Just make this snappy." Nine hummed as he walked up to one of them, pulling out one of the several flash drives that All for One had sent them via Giran.
"Wasting time isn't something I do." Nine replied, plugging the drive into one of the server's terminals. The screen lit up, first requesting a password, but the flash drives came with a little something to bypass that. normally, whoever AFO got to make the hacking programs would never be able to produce something that could essentially brute force its way through I-island's security.
But the servers weren't on that network, but on a smaller localized one. After all, if the main security could keep out any threats, why waste the time and resources ensuring that the secondary layer was just as capable?
'It seems like with some of the greatest defenses in history, it wasn't an enemy from outside, but the one within that would be its downfall.' Nine thought to himself as the flash's hacking program broke through. Looking through the files, he found any that were related to quirks. Their client didn't say what in particular he wished, so Nine had to copy all of it. Which amounted to 40GBs worth of data.
As that went on, he moved to the second terminal and did the same thing, finding that the files on quirk research were even larger here, over 50GB, which meant he would need to switch flash drives once the one was full. Nine suspected that it would be like this when he saw that he was given so many flashes, but that didn't mean he liked it as he moved on to the third one.
The only good thing was that such advanced systems had amazing speed. He had been putting in the 6th flash when the first terminal let out a bing, the copy, and transfer having been completed.
"I should be done in 10 minutes. Afterward, I'll move on to the next phase of the plan." Nine relayed as he continued with his job.
" Understood." Nine hardly reacted to the confirmation as he went from terminal to terminal, setting up the copy and downloads before moving on to the next, only returning to confirm that the copied files had been successfully transferred or on now and then, restarting it. It would have gone faster if he had merely downloaded the original file, but the less evidence that he was ever on this floor, the better.
It was once reached the 3rd level, where the most confidential of data and research was kept that he found something off.
'Hold on…what's Project: Crown of Aegis?' Nine stumbled upon the name by chance, but out of all the files he had seen, this one spoke to him as it was kept in the highest branch of security. Even with the flash granting him access, when he tried to open it, he got an unexpected result. 'Files locked?'
Why was this file locked when the others weren't? He searched its file classification thanks to the terminals having a handy classification page and found that class 2 and higher were files that couldn't be accessed from here anymore, but from the smaller, and typically much harder to get into 178th floor. What could be so important that it couldn't be accessed by the general staff?
'He hired us for quirk research, this seems more like a support item.' Nine resolved to try and find out, as he had brought along his hard drive just in case there was something else of value for him.
"Send down the elevator." The villain called as the group reached the elevator, their hostages having remained silent the entire trip.
" Give me a second."
"Actually," The taller man in a mask turned to Pyre. "Could you let us off around the 40th floor?" He asked, David and Sam wondering what the heck was he planning to do on the 40th floor, their goal was the 200th.
"What are you planning?" The taller masked man asked for them, as Sam and David couldn't break the illusion, not when a hero was present.
"Oh, just a little chat is all, one about self-improvement." Iida shivered, both in fear and rage at that retort from his brother's torturer. He had seen the video, he doubted that most pros worth their salt had refused to watch it if for no other reason than to study it to better manage the change to the board, it entailed.
But he had also spoken with Tenya, in the new rare moments where he was lucid enough to have a conversation outside his therapy. His brother told him about his nightmares, the flames, and the pain and terror that always followed hearing Pyre talking about how he was going to make him better. Was it his time to share that fate?
Ignorant of his thoughts, the second villain turned to Pyre as the elevator came down. "You wasting time with that nonsense, you have a role to play, remember?"
"I haven't forgotten," Pyre replied, shaking his head but remaining firm on this as the elevator doors opened. "But I do have a few minutes to spare."
" Just let the brat do what he wants. So long as he doesn't fuck things up, we're good." Swordkill cut off any retort the second villain could give. With the issue settled, the 5 settled into the elevator, the two scientists nervous about Pyre's odd behavior, but for different reasons. Neither voiced them as they reached the 30th floor, the door opened and Pyre stepped out, wheeling Tensei along with him.
I-island's central tower was more than a mere tower, not just in size, but in function. Case in point, despite being 30 floors up, Pyre led him out onto one of the 3 smaller buildings that surrounded the main tower. This one has a massive rooftop garden, with plants from around the world, all taken care of to such a point that one would think the gardeners were artists and perfectionists, maybe they were.
Wheeling his guest, because he didn't view him as a hostage, forward, Pyre tapped his com, making sure that its microphone was off, but the speaker was on so he could hear about anything that required his attention, but not the other way around. "Well, there shouldn't be any cameras here, so it's just the two of us."
"What? Did you want to gloat without the others knowing?" Iida asked him, with Pyre turning to face him confused.
"About what? Pretty sure the last we met, we only managed to escape you by chance. I didn't even know Koharu could do that." Pyre muttered that last bit as he removed his helmet, letting the retired pro confirm that his worst fears were true, that he was in the presence of a pyromaniac, the only B-ranked villain among the 5 Thunders.
Still, he kept himself in check as he couldn't afford to needlessly anger the villain, not when he had no means to defend himself or subdue him. "No, about my brother." He expected many things when he said then, glee, pride, but Pyre looked at him in… concern?
"How's he doing by the way? The news doesn't talk much about his condition, just that he had the pleasure to feel the flames, so I've been left in the dark." Pyre asked him, the man baffled by his response, by his words as he could tell, he wasn't being toyed with, but the same person that put his kid brother in the hospital was genuinely concerned for him?
"The pleasure of your flames?" What was he on about? How twisted as he.
"Of course!" Pyre smiled, his thumb pointing to his chest in pride. Why shouldn't he be proud? That was his finest work up till then, he had only ever healed Nine but with Tenya, he did something he had been trying to achieve for a while. "I made darn sure that those flames were some of the best building flames I could make. I wanted him to come out of that stronger, and faster than ever."
"He's doing… remarkably well…physically at least." Tensei was finding it quite hard to follow this kid's mind, but he seemed…somewhat reasonable, for a villain at least.
"Just physically?" Pyre raised an eyebrow, as Tenya hurting over something his flames couldn't heal. "Probably something silly if you didn't bring it up. But I wanted to bring you up here for something else."
"And what, pray tell, is that?" Tensei asked him as Pyre twirled away from him, skipping forward into the grassy garden before turning to him, his emerald eyes glowing in the dark.
"I want to make better what Stain broke."
