Chapter 19: Battling This Deceptive Second-Floor Boss!

Part 1

With the new level up, I gained one more skill point.

The skill point acquisition was agonizingly slow thanks to my pitifully low potential. Still, I appreciated the chance to upgrade my skills.

[Medium Armor] and [Signature Weapon] already had points in them, thanks to my bond rewards with Mitsurugi and Darkness.

I decided to invest the point in [Signature Weapon]. Dealing with those lizards made me realize that I was sorely lacking in offensive power. Well, I already knew that before.

You have upgraded the [Signature Weapon] skill!

[Signature Weapon] Skill Rank: 3, Passive Skill

Assign two of the weapons in your inventory as your 'Signature Weapon'. These weapons gain +10 durability and +2 weapon damage. These weapons won't be destroyed even if they fall below 0 'Durability', but you can't use them again until you fix it.

The upgrade allowed me to have two signature weapons…

I chose my hunting shortbow as the second weapon.

I moved on through the dungeon, looking for the second floor's boss area.

When the surroundings changed from monotone stone walls to lush vegetation, I knew I was close.

The first floor boss area was a grassy field that acted as the Giant Toad's habitat.

This time, I found myself entering a forest. It disoriented me, switching from stone catacombs to a wide stretch of tall trees.

The artificial light from the painted sky shone through the canopies overhead. Twigs and acorns crushed under my shoes as I walked through the forest, keeping a wary eye out.

The area was even wider than the Giant Toad area, but much of it was obscured by the trees. I took out my notebook and made a map to keep track of where I was going, as well as taking pictures of landmarks.

I followed the tracks and after a while, Appuri-chan notified me of a new skill.

You learned a new skill!

[Tracking] Skill Rank: 1, Active Skill (5 mp cost)

You can identify and track the location of creatures using tracks and prints that have been around for no longer than thirty minutes. Your detection radius is 15-feet. Success is determined by your 'Intuition' (65).

Using my new tracking skill, I learned that these tracks belonged to goblins. I wasn't really interested in these weak creatures, but thanks to my [Solo-Leveling] skill, power leveling these weak mobs was more viable than it was before, with the extra EXP I gain.

It didn't take much longer until I found the goblins. I used [Lurk] on myself to hide myself from them.

There were about six of them sitting around, catching a break. They were munching on some dried meat and passing around a wineskin with a weird green drink inside it.

I took out my bow in preparation for an ambush. But that was when my [Enemy Detection] went off. And it was warning me of a very dangerous threat.

I turned around in the direction of the threat and used [Farsight] to find it. The presence was hiding itself some distance away, behind some trees.

Thankfully, [Lore Reading] didn't have a range limit and I was able to identify what kind of creature this was.

Rookie Killer

A black, feline monster resembling a panther. It is a cunning, powerful beast that uses weaker monsters such as goblins as bait, to lure inexperienced monsters into a state of vulnerability.

Warning! This Rookie Killer is a mutant variant and may have special abilities!

As if its description wasn't scary enough, the skill even warned me of unknown powers this thing may have.

I already decided to leave, backing away from it, but it already knew I was there. It leapt out from its cover and dashed at me at great speeds.

"Ah, crap!"

I used [Drain Touch] on the ground to refill my mana, then I used the [Escape] skill to run away.

However… I soon found out what this special skill was.

The Rookie Killer disappeared with a puff of black smoke and reappeared in front of me.

"...?!"

Considering that it had to run a certain distance, I assumed that it was a short range warping ability, rather than long range teleportation. Otherwise, it would have teleported as soon as it saw me, instead of running close.

"Grrrr…"

The Rookie Killer salivated as it growled at me.

Like with the Kobold Hero that evolved, I couldn't understand what it was saying even with [Monster Talk]. After all, the skill was only Rank 1.

…That must mean that Yunyun had hers ranked all the way to the max.

"Hey there… I'm assuming you're the floor boss? Haha…"

I chuckled nervously as I stepped away from it, but the rookie killer predatorily circled around me, waiting for a chance to pounce.

"Grrraaah!"

And then, it attacked, coiling up its body like a spring and leaping at me.

"[Quick Draw]!"

I drew Chunchunmaru from its sheath and in a flash of iaido speed, I surprised the Rookie Killer by cutting it across its chest with an upwards slash.

"Grrrr!"

It howled in pain as I drew blood.

I used [Enemy Reading] to see its stats.

It had a +4 damage resistance from its pelt and a total of 60 HP.

The slash I gave it 8 damage.

I sheath my sword again, preparing for another [Quick Draw].

There wasn't any time to think of any elaborate plans. I just had to think fast on my feet and survive.

"Grrrr!"

This time, it didn't pounce, choosing to teleport instead.

[Enemy Detection] alerted me that the Rookie Killer appeared behind me, but I was taken off guard by the sudden teleportation.

"Ahhh!"

I screamed as I felt hot pain on my back, as the Rookie Killer tried to shred me with its claws. Thankfully, my breastplate stopped some of the damage.

Still, it did a good 10 damage on me.

"[Heal]!"

If I didn't learn this skill from Aqua, I might have been doomed. Thankfully, I managed to heal up all the damage.

I went down on one knee and absorbed mana from the ground, while keeping my other hand on my sword. I noticed something from the last two attacks. It pounced on me for the first attack, but for the second attack, it teleported.

That must mean that the teleportation had a recharge period. That's usually how it is with this kinds of abilities. They can't be spammed over and over.

I counted that the time it took from the two teleportations was 10 seconds, which was most likely the recharge period.

That meant that I had to take advantage of that time…

Part 2

"Grrr…"

This time, the Rookie Killer didn't charge in recklessly without its teleportation available.

I took that as my window to attack.

"[Tinder]! [Wind Breath]!"

I expanded the range of tinder by blowing it into a puff of fire with the wind. The Rookie Killer didn't expect it and got singed by the flames!

"Grraaaah!"

It took 6 fire damage from the burning flames.

"Grrrr!"

Once its teleportation was available again, it disappeared into a puff of smoke.

This time, I was expecting it. As soon as I felt that spike of danger from [Enemy Detection], I drew my sword.

I didn't even swing for a slash, I just rested my katana against my shoulder, letting the blade stick back.

"Grrrrk!"

The teleporting Rookie Killer appeared directly where the blade was pointing at.

It tried to attack me again, but I used [Escape] to move away in time to dodge the attack and face it once more.

This time, I drew my bow.

"[Snipe]!"

It howled once more in pain as I hit it with an arrow for 6 damage.

The Rookie Killer got impatient and tried to attack me even with its teleportation down. I tossed the bow aside and got it with another [Quick Draw], spraying its blood as I gave it another deep cut across its chest.

"Grrrrr!"

It battled through the pain and pushed through, staggering me as I defended with Chunchunmaru.

It was about to follow that up by lifting its paws, trying to slash those sharp claws down at me.

"[Create Earth]! [Wind Breath]!"

I made it miss by spraying it with dirt in the eyes, using that chance to gain space.

"[Steal]!"

I used [Steal] on the bow that I dropped. It reappeared in my hands.

"[Snipe]! [Snipe]!"

I was able to get two arrows off with the distance I achieved.

However, the teleportation was back online.

I dropped the bow again, anticipating the attack.

That was when I realized just how cunning that Rookie Killer really was.

Instead of teleporting right away, it first lowered itself and then pounced just before teleporting.

Even if I could tell where it was coming from, I couldn't dodge the Rookie Killer as it was mid-pounce.

"Grrrrr!"

It let out a bloodthirsty cry as it managed to bring me down to the ground.

"Owww! Oi, get off me!"

I cried in pain as it seemed to relish digging its claws into me.

"[Heal]!"

First, I healed myself, repairing the flesh that was just wounded.

"[Drain Touch]!"

Then, I gripped the Rookie Killer's arms that were on me and used [Drain Touch].

"Grrrrk!"

It flinched in pain as I sapped life energy and mana from it.

Its answer was to stab its claws into me again.

I tried to ignore the pain as I casted [Heal] on myself again.

It was an unbeatable cycle of [Drain Touch] and [Heal]. In video games, the most annoying characters are those that have damage over time as well as life steal. This Rookie Killer was experiencing that hell.

"What are you gonna do, huh? Hurt me all you like, the only one losing here is you!"

It tried to teleport away, but it already used that ability many times, and I was draining its remaining mana. Instead, it overpowered me and leapt away.

"[Create Water]! [Freeze]!"

I created a frozen surface in the area where it was about to land. Instead of landing gracefully, it slipped on the frozen surface.

I drew Chunchunmaru and ran forward to stab it in the back, dealing the final blow.

"Grrraaah! Ahh… Grrr…."

It let out a pitiful final cry as it bled to death.

Congratulations! You have defeated the boss of floor 2! You gained 200 EXP!

You completed the quest, 'Defeat the second floor boss'!

Quest Reward: Random Loot Box

Here it was. The reason why I fought that Rookie Killer

The blue box appeared in my hands and I opened it.

Maximum Skill Rank Potion - Very Rare

Maxes out one of your skills that haven't been maxed out already. This is a random outcome

Sells for: 50,000 Yen

An absurd item just showed up!

It was tempting to just sell it right away, but it wasn't like I was short on money right now.

Rather, since my 'Potential' was so low, and skill points were hard to come by for me…

It seemed like a waste not to use this potion.

I uncorked the potion and drank it. It tasted like grape juice.

Your 'Improvised Weapon' skill has reached the maximum level!

[Improvised Weapon] Skill Rank: 5, Passive Skill

You are proficient in using improvised weapons. Ordinary items that haven't been previously equipped deal +5 more damage. Furthermore, any item that is created on the spot is now considered an improvised weapon.

…Out of all the skills to get chosen, it was the skill I used the least.

That additional clarification of what an improvised weapon was could be considered interesting, since I had crafting skills.

But I couldn't just create a new weapon in the middle of a battle, since it specifies that it needs to be created on the spot.

"Kazuma-san, you should have just sold that potion! You're relying too much on your luck!"

Even Appuri-chan agreed with me.

"Oh, by the way, your accumulated feats of courage have increased your 'Bravery' by +10!"

I was wondering when all my brave feats would be acknowledged by the system.

"...Why did it take so long?"

"Well, it's hard to believe that Kazuma-san is actually being brave, so it took me a while~!"

I put her on sleep mode for the rest of the night.

Part 3

I tried my best in practice after our game against the youth club. However, I didn't even gain any stats this time around.

Mitsurugi tried to encourage me.

"Just keep working hard, Satou. Hard work always beats talent."

"...What's your 'Potential' stat, by the way."

He glanced away guiltily.

"...You should just focus on yourself if you want to grow."

So that whole hard work beats talent is just bullshit, huh?

I went to the gym afterwards, greeting the beautiful receptionist, Luna-san.

"Oh, you're alone today, Satou-san?"

She asked, looking around, as if expecting Mitsurugi to show up.

I was getting sick of that guy.

I had the [Heal] skill now, which meant that I didn't have to depend on Aqua.

After a hard set, I would just use [Heal] on myself to repair the tired muscles.

As for my stamina…

"Oi, watcha lookin' at, punk?!"

A super muscular guy turned and started yelling at me after I accidentally bumped into him.

Ah… So this is the classic roid rage.

The other gym goers started standing up to defend me, but I didn't give them the chance.

I placed my hand on the guy and used [Drain Touch].

"Gaccck! Owww stop, stop! I don't get what you're doing, but stop!"

I replenished my stamina in this way.

Furthermore, I noticed a lot of people were impressed that a small guy like me brought down the biggest guy in the gym with just a touch.

Your 'Charisma' and 'Attractiveness' increased by +2!

I resumed my workout after that. Unfortunately, no one came to pick a fight with me, otherwise I would have had more chances to replenish my stamina.

Your 'Strength', 'Stamina', 'Willpower' and 'Health' increased by +2!

On my way out of the gym, I got a text from Chris.

Hey, Kazuma-kun! If you're free, do you wanna start transferring those Green Onions from the second floor to the Giant Toad area?

I was waiting for Chris to message me about this and immediately replied, telling her I'd meet up with her.

I didn't wait long in the dungeon before Chris showed up.

"Yo, Kazuma-kun! Thanks for coming!"

"Hey. I'm surprised Darkness isn't with you."

"...We're not a package deal."

We exchanged a bit of pleasantries before heading up to the second floor.

I used [Drain Touch] on some goblins to restore my stamina and joined Chris in wiping out the small fry that were in the way.

We were sharing the kills, so I only ended up with 15 EXP.

"There they are, Kazuma-kun…"

Chris pointed to the Green Onions. They were currently resting in soil, but I knew that they could move around if they wanted to. For some reason, the vegetables in the dungeon can move and even attack. They were pretty delicious when cooked, though, like that cabbage that I made into a stir fry.

"...Kazuma-kun, why is your mouth watering? These green onions are supposed to be for the Giant Toads."

"I bet they'll be a good garnish for katsudon."

"Maybe I shouldn't have brought you for this mission."

I decided to focus, so Chris wouldn't lose her trust in me.

"So, what should we do?"

"We both have the [Lurk] skill, so let's sneak up on them and grab two each. We don't need a lot to grow a garden."

"One for each hand. Got it."

"Are you ready, Kazuma-kun?"

"Ready…"

"Then, go!"

We made a sprint for the Green Onions, hands stretched out towards them.

The Green Onions sprouted out from the soil they were resting in and coiled up like a spring, ready to bounce away.

I snatched up two of them before they could leap away, with Chris doing the same.

"We got 'em… Good job, Kazuma-kun!"

"As expected of a thief… Chris is really good at snatching up Green Onions."

"...Please don't diminish my class into that of a produce gathering profession."

"I haven't seen you do anything really 'thief' like, though."

"I-It's just how my class is called! It doesn't really mean that I have to steal stuff! Kazuma-kun, you have the [Steal] skill, right? You didn't steal anything with it, did you?"

She was trying to prove a point, but…

"Yeah, I did."

"...?! Eh? You did?!"

It was during my coffee date with Rin, when I stole some delinquent's cash.

"Oi, Kazuma-kun, that's wrong! That's very wrong! You shouldn't use these skills in your world!"

I decided not to tell her how I had been spamming these skills during my soccer games.

"That guy deserved to have his money stolen from him, though."

He was sexually harassing the cashier, after all.

"That doesn't mean you can steal stuff from people!"

"You really are a fake thief…"

"Don't call me that!"

We went over to the Giant Toad area next. Like Chris said, there were only tadpoles bouncing around.

Chris set up signs all around for adventurers, warning them not to kill any of the tadpoles. Not like those signs were needed. The tadpoles that had different colors were all innocent and harmless. Only the most cruel people would try to hunt them down.

Even if they were considered infants, these tadpoles were bigger than a cat. That made them quite a sight to behold as they flopped around the grass or swam in puddles.

"Let's make a fenced area around here and start planting the Green Onions."

The fence needed to be quite big in order to properly keep the tadpoles away from them. Thankfully, Chris came prepared with the materials.

I used my [Smithing] skill to create tall fences around the Green Onions that Chris was planting.

The method is to nail the green onions down into the soil, so they couldn't escape. Green Onions had partial regeneration. Removing roots from them won't kill them, and those roots could be used to grow more Green Onions.

In this manner, we made quite a decently-sized garden.

"Phew, we sure put in the work!"

Chris said, wiping the sweat off her brow as we looked at our garden.

"It feels like real-life Harvest Moon."

"...That's just normal gardening."

Since I didn't have much experience with the real world, the only thing I could compare it to was a video game.

"Thanks for your help, Kazuma-kun! You're oddly reliable when it counts!"

"You didn't need to add in that 'oddly' part."

"I can rely on you again next time, right?"

I nodded at her.

"Text me anytime."

We waved at each other as we separated.

Your bond with Chris has deepened!

Chris (Silver-haired Thief), Bond Rank: 3

At Rank 3, Chris views you as someone she can confide with! Her trust in you is slowly increasing! It seems that the key to deepening a bond with her is to show her that you can get along with Darkness and the other girls! She thinks that you are reliable and resourceful and will ask for your help in keeping the dungeon safe and functional!

Bond Reward: You learn the [Bind] skill!

[Bind] Skill Rank: 1, Active Skill (10 mp cost)

Throw a rope at a creature. Success is determined by your [Dexterity] against the target's.

Oh…!

I always wanted to learn this skill!

From what I had seen Chris do with it, this skill was effective in restraining threats in a fight.

Even the Kobold Hero managed to get caught in Chris's [Bind].

When I got back to my place, I found Aqua watching the TV in the living room. Kazuto was also watching with her.

I sat with them after having some dinner and found myself sneaking glances at Aqua, with her sneaking glances back.

Kazuto sighed and grabbed the remote.

"I don't like this show, nee-chan. I'm gonna change it."

"Ehh… But I like that show… Oh, well, I guess I'll go upstairs."

What a horrible actress.

I gave Kazuto a nod for setting this up.

Then I went upstairs with Aqua and we went at it all night.

Part 4

"Hey, senpai, do you wanna continue our date tomorrow?"

Rin asked me, during lunch break.

We were in the cafeteria, where we ordered a set meal each.

"Of course, I promise not nothing will interrupt us this time!"

"You don't have to make promises, senpai."

I got overly excited and made a promise right out of the gate.

"By the way, senpai, do you know that this water park I booked for us has a famous water slide?"

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah! We definitely gotta try it out, alright?"

I imagined myself on a swim ring with Rin, leisurely going down the slide.

"Yeah, I don't see why not."

"Oh, my friends went on it before. Here, they sent me a video."

"..."

Now, I have faced death many times ever since I discovered the dungeon.

Yet, I still got scared by what I saw.

It was a 70-foot tall 'slide' that went straight down.

It didn't even seem sloped or safe in any way. It just looked like a freefall straight down something that barely qualified as a slide.

I watched Rin's friends scream in fear as the staff member pushed them down.

"..."

"Doesn't it look fun, senpai?!"

What's so fun about that?!

My mind raced as I tried to think of any excuse not to go on this godforsaken water slide.

But I already flaked out on her once, I couldn't do it again.

"Y-Yeah. It looks fun."

"Yay~! I'm looking forward to tomorrow!"

"Ah, yeah. Haha…"

Later that night, I was in all black clothes, using [Lurk] as I snuck into the water park.

My objective was to sabotage that accursed slide, so that the supervisors would close it for tomorrow.

Some might say this is drastic. Those people have never had to go down this slide.

I felt sorry since Rin was looking forward to this, but my guilt didn't outweigh my survival instincts.

"Yo, Mitsurugi!"

I hid behind a corner as I heard a familiar name being called out.

I peeked around the corner and sure enough, I saw Mitsurugi in a staff uniform, talking to some other guys our age.

"...Thanks for helping us out! One of our guys just quit without a two-week notice…"

"No problem! I don't mind covering a shift or two. We're fellow app-users, after all!"

"I'll give you some of my old gear as thanks."

"Ehh… Do I really need it? All my gear is pretty high-level, you know."

"What a showoff!"

I hid behind the wall again as they shared a laugh.

Mitsurugi and at least three other app users…

Why did this have to be the most heavily guarded water park of all time?!

Wasn't this overkill?!

…Then again, here I was, an app-user, using my skills to sneak into a water park, just because I didn't want to go down a slide.

I was about to give up and go home.

"Hey, earlier today, there was this guy who chickened out before going down the 70-foot slide. His girlfriend dumped him on the spot."

"...Wow… Poor guy."

I turned back around and went back to my hiding spot.

As if I could go back home after hearing that!

They were all close to the slide, meaning I couldn't just sneak past them. I didn't know what these app users were capable of, so using [Lurk] might not be enough.

Then again, I couldn't just wait for their shift to end, since I didn't want to get in trouble with my parents for staying up too late. That would interfere with my date tomorrow, which defeats the whole purpose of what I'm doing here.

Mitsurugi also knew that I could imitate voices with [Versatile Entertainer], so I didn't want to risk exposing myself to get them to leave.

Then, I remember how I cleared up the crowd that was forming around me and Darkness, when we were facing Beldia.

"[Wind Breath], [Freeze]."

I chilled the air and blew it their way.

"Brrr… Why is it so cold in June?"

"Let's head inside, we're pretty much done cleaning here, anyway."

I used the opportunity to sneak in once they left.

I went up the stairs to the slide then thought about how to sabotage it. It wasn't like I wanted to do actual, serious damage to the thing, just because I was a coward.

Instead, I used [Smithing] to make it appear like parts of the slide had rusted and needed maintenance.

"...Kazuma-san, you've reached a new low."

Appuri-chan went ahead and scolded me.

"Oh, shut up! You don't know how many years I spent alone! I'm gonna relish my popular period as much as I can!"

"Even though you already have mama?! You're lucky that I'm inclined to help you since I'm an AI, otherwise I would have ratted on you already!"

It was true that I already had Aqua, but Aqua said it herself. It's better to have fun in the moment than worry about the future.

Those were her own words, so she couldn't just take it back.

Part 5

"Senpai! Sorry to keep you waiting!"

I turned my head around quickly when I heard Rin's voice behind me.

I had already changed into my new trunks and waited for Rin to come out of the ladies changing room.

The wait was worth it.

She was wearing a light green bikini with dark green trim. I admired her slim body and feminine curves, as well as her modest chest that was slightly exposed by her bikini top.

"How do I look?"

She said, while twirly around for me.

I gave her a thumbs up.

"I'll have fun showing you off to the other schmucks here."

"Geez, senpai! Anyway, let's try that slide!"

She was really excited for that slide.

We went to the slide and saw the 'Out of Order' sign blocking the stairs. Rin let out a sigh of disappointment.

"Aww… I had been looking forward to this all week…"

Hearing that made me feel a tremendous amount of guilt.

I also noticed some other people looking disappointed when they saw the sign.

"..."

I took out my phone and called Mitsurugi.

"Eh? How'd you know I work at this water park?"

"Just come meet me near the bathroom."

I excused myself from Rin and went to meet up with Mitsurugi. Then, I explained to him what I did the other night.

He looked at me in sheer disgust.

"...That's the most pathetic thing I've ever heard, Satou."

He really didn't try to spare my feelings.

"Anyway, just tell the maintenance crew that you suspect the rust is fake, that it was some kind of prank or something."

"Alright. Well, for what it's worth, I appreciate your honesty."

It took thirty minutes for the maintenance crew to determine the rust was fake, but…

"Whooaaa! It's open now!"

Rin said, dragging my arm excitedly to the slide.

"Y-Yay…"

I said, in false excitement.

The whole time we were climbing up, Rin was talking excitedly to me, while all I could do was nod along and try to hide my fear.

Since we were one of the first to line up, it didn't take long until it was our turn.

"Let's do this, senpai!"

Rin said, as the lifeguard helped her lay down on the slide, instructing her to put both arms over her chest.

I watched her drop off, screaming in excitement as she slid down. She went down at such high speeds that it seemed like she appeared in the pool below in the blink of an eye. She waved to me when she made it down.

While shaking all over, I followed the lifeguard's instructions and laid on my back, feeling the cold surface of the pool.

"Are you ready?"

He asked, placing his hand on my shoulder.

"..."

When I didn't respond, he took that as a sign to push me forward.

"W-Wait…! I'm… Gahhh?!"

I felt the sensation of falling.

Then, I hit the water.

…It honestly wasn't even that bad.

It felt like a normal drop in a roller coaster, but it was way shorter than a roller coaster.

It only looked bad because of how unsecure it was, but when I thought about it, even little kids were allowed to go on this slide. There was no way it'd be unsafe.

"Whooo! That was fun, wasn't it, senpai!"

With all the adrenaline coursing through her, Rin didn't even hesitate to hug me.

Yeah, it honestly wasn't that bad.

You gained +2 'Bravery'!

I saw this notification on my phone, when I went to change back.

We spent a couple hours in the park, riding more slides. Rin went to the 70-foot slide at least 4 times. I became immune to the fear after going with her all those times.

We met up again at the entrance, Rin smiling as she waved me over.

"I had a blast, senpai. How 'bout you?"

"Yeah, me too."

"We're having so much fun that I don't want the date to end just yet, you know?"

That was an invitation if I ever heard one.

"Yeah, there's still a lot more time."

She had a thoughtful look on her face.

"Oh, do you wanna come over to my place, senpai?"

She asked me so innocently, that it took me a few seconds to register what she said.

"Yeah, that sounds good."

I tried to sound as calm as possible.

And in reality, I really was calm.

I wasn't the same kissless virgin as before!

That didn't stop the nerves, though.

I followed Rin to her place. She stopped for some groceries along the way.

"Here we are!"

She led me to a standard apartment. I left my shoes at the door and followed her in.

She showed me to her room and left to get some snacks and tea. I looked around, seeing her pictures and Magical Tanuki Girl merch. She sat down next to me when she got back and served the tea.

She took out her phone and we looked at the pictures we took.

"Oh, this one's cute! Do you mind if I post this?"

"I don't mind."

I never posted any pictures of myself on social media before, but I wouldn't say no to her.

"Hehe… We look good together, don't we?"

She said, bumping her shoulder against mine, while giving me a teasing smile as she scrolled through the pictures, looking for stuff to post.

Out of all the girls I knew, Rin was the most normal one. That didn't make her any less interesting, though. I liked talking about books with her, talking about school and stuff. She was a grounding presence amid all the other craziness in my life.

I sincerely liked Rin.

That was why, when I felt like the mood was right…

I placed my arm around her.

"Oh? Senpai… You sure are bold."

There was a light flush on her cheeks from the contact.

"...You were the one who invited me here. Not to mention rubbing your shoulder against me this whole time."

"Eh, you noticed that, huh?"

It was hard not to notice.

"Senpai… How are things going with that girl you were talking about? Are you dating her now?"

Here it was. I suppose it was natural for her to ask this, before taking any further steps with me.

I didn't want to lie to her, so I told her the truth.

"...We went all the way the other day."

"I see… And you still agreed to go on a date with me, huh? Senpai, you're quite the playboy."

I didn't argue because it was all true.

"Ah, but I'm not dating her."

"But you do like her, right, senpai?"

I slowly nodded, thinking about Aqua.

"Yeah, I do."

"But you like me, too?"

I felt like a scumbag for this, but I also nodded.

"Y-Yeah."

"Is this girl gonna get mad at you for seeing other girls?"

"No, she's the open-minded type."

To a fault, I'd say. But her Axis-cult teachings were actually convenient for me, so I couldn't criticize her too much.

"Well, I said what I said before, senpai, and I haven't changed my mind. I'm fine with it since we're still in highschool. We should just have fun without taking things too seriously. Ah, but it's important to communicate at all times, right? Like, if I'm feeling jealous, or you decide that you like one more than the other. We need to talk about these things honestly."

Once again, I was reminded of how mature Rin really was, even though she was a year younger than me.

"Yeah… I promise I'll properly talk to you about everything."

I hesitated to tell her about me going all the way with Aqua before, but if I wanted to make this work, I couldn't hold back like that anymore.

And since we weren't keeping secrets from one another…

"By the way… I was actually really scared to go down that slide."

She giggled and leaned closer to me, her face drawing near to mine.

"Yeah, I could tell. But you still went with me. That's why I like you, senpai."

She whispered, then leaned in even more.

I let my lips draw to hers, until they met in a sweet, gentle kiss.

It didn't last long, but Rin was blushing all over when we parted. I also felt my face getting hot.

"Wahh… My first kiss…"

She breathed out, glancing up at me shyly.

"Congratulations, Rin. I give you permission to show off to your friends about this."

She chuckled when I gave her a thumbs up.

"You joke about that, but you're pretty popular among my friends. You're the senpai who is an important player on the soccer team, after all."

"...Want to give me their numbers."

"Senpai… I'm open-minded, but my friends are off limits."

I guess even the kindhearted Rin wouldn't budge on that.

Part 6

I had some time before going back home, so I decided to make a stop at Wiz's shop.

"Oh, if it isn't the boy who is happy because he can enjoy the affections of two girls at once! What a scumbag, a prime example of an enemy of all women!"

Of course, Vanir was there to start some shit with me.

"...I'm here as a potential customer, so zip it."

"Hmm… It seems that you are. Looking for a scroll, yes?"

The only thing good about Vanir's mind-reading ability was that it made communicating with him very easy. I didn't even have to explain much.

Wiz came out to the counter, happy to see me, one of her only real customers.

"Ah, Kazuma-san, thank you for coming!"

"Have you been eating well, Wiz?"

"Yes! I had one more drop of sugar to go with my water the other day!"

I looked accusingly at Vanir, who glanced away from me.

"...It is not my fault that this decrepit shopkeeper can't turn a profit! Not only that, but that goddess playmate of yours keeps coming here to disrupt our business!"

"I'll talk to her."

Aqua had way too much free time.

When Wiz heard that I was looking for a scroll, she took out her collection.

"Kazuma-san, this is a scroll that has the ability to absorb a spell that has been cast on you!"

"Oh, that's pretty useful!"

"Indeed! And it only has a 70% chance of making the spell blow up in your face!"

"Wiz, from now on, please don't recommend things that have a chance of killing me."

With a sad expression, she put away most of the scrolls she laid out on the counter.

I turned to Vanir.

"Oi, why don't you just tell me which scroll will end up being important to me in the future? You've given me advice before."

"...Do you think that I'm that convenient?! I only give advice that will directly benefit me!"

"Aren't you an employee at this store?! And I'm your only customer! If you want me to spend any money at all, you better help now!"

"...You make a good point, boy. Very well. Then, I'd look into getting this [Unlock] spell scroll…"

"What does the spell do?"

"It simply unlocks doors or restricted areas."

"I suppose that's useful in the dungeon…"

"You're not getting more information out of me!"

"Yeah, I figured."

Wiz was excited when Vanir convinced me to get the scroll, which cost me 10,000 Yen.

"Thank you so much for your purchase! Maybe I can buy some onigiri next time!"

I almost wanted to give Wiz some more money… But I knew that she'd just waste it, anyway.

Your bond with Wiz has deepened!

Wiz (Lich Shopkeeper), Bond Rank: 3

At Rank 3, Wiz sees you as a returning customer who gave her money that she can use to buy some solid food. You remain as her best, and only, customer. Shopping in the store will deepen your bond with her.

[Ice Magic Increase] Skill Rank: 1, Passive Skill

Increases the power of Ice Magic by +1.

When I returned home, I went up to Aqua's room to talk to her about Wiz.

"...Don't give Wiz a hard time."

"Hah? Kazuma, we've been doing it a lot, right? Then why are you still lusting after that filthy Lich?! Don't let those big melons fool you, she's a dark, evil being who serves the Demon King!"

"I'm not lusting after her! I just feel bad for the poor girl!"

"Girl… Kazuma, she might look young, but Liches are immortal beings! For all you know, she's a granny who is rotting on the inside!"

"You're immortal, too. How do I know you're not a granny?"

"...I'm pretty sure we're the same age."

"You're pretty sure, huh?"

She smirked and got closer, placing a hand on my shoulder, then pushing me down on the bed.

"Does it really matter, hm? You'll still do it with me, anyway."

What an abrupt subject change.

Still, I didn't refuse her advances.

Soon, we were both naked and she was on top of me, straddling me with her thighs.

"Mnnn.. Nnn…! Nnn!"

She moaned as she rode me hard, her breasts bouncing along with the movement.

"Hah… You can't just… Rely on sex to make me stop lecturing you!"

I said, even though my hands moved up from her waist to her breasts, grabbing handfuls of them. She graciously leaned down and arched her back to give me access.

In response, she just squeezed me tighter, clamping around my member, making me groan from the pleasure.

"Sorry, what was that, Kazuma? I can't hear you over your own moans…"

"Geez…! Hahhhn…!"

With how excited I got over Rin's kiss, this session with Aqua just felt better.

And she was clearly trying her best to make me forget about the matter with Wiz.

Just like that…

It didn't take long until I was moaning and shooting spurts all over her stomach.

"Hah… Hah…"

I breathed out as Aqua slipped away from me and laid beside me, curling up at my side.

She grinned and kissed me on the cheek.

"That's not fair…"

I muttered, while placing my arm on my forehead.

"Well, it's not fair how you're always taking Wiz's side… Even though I'm the one who's your lover…"

It made me blush, hearing Aqua call herself that.

"...Speaking of things like lovers."

I told her about what happened with Rin, choosing to tell the truth like Rin said.

"What kind of girl is this Rin, anyway? Maybe I should meet her?"

I imagined Aqua and Rin meeting, and immediately got a headache.

"...I don't think that's a good idea."

"Why? I mean, if we're gonna share you, I might as well get to know her."

"You both have very different personalities…"

"I see… So she's the chaotic and impulsive type, huh?"

Aqua…

She was more delusional than I thought.

"Hey, Kazuma, why are you looking at me like that, as if you're pitying me?!"

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

"You are blessed with good looks, Aqua. Truly."

"Oi, I can tell when you're insulting me, and that sure felt like an insult!"

"Just be glad you were born a goddess."

"...I am glad, but again, that really feels like an insult!"

Aqua kept questioning me on what I meant by that, before she got bored and kicked me out of her room.

I went back to my room and took a look at one of the books Rin recommended to me. I didn't have any homework to do, so I spent the rest of the night reading it.

"Your 'Creativity' increased by +1! Also, Kazuma-san, please don't tease mama so much!"

Instead of just giving me a report of my stat increase, Appuri-chan took the opportunity to scold me about my treatment of her mama.

"Don't ignore me! Also, your new quests have been determined!"

"...Why did it take so long after I completed the second floor boss quest?"

"You've improved a lot, so it took some time to come up with quests of an appropriate difficulty! Do you wish to see them now?"

Reading that book made me sleepy, so I decided that it could wait for tomorrow.
