Chapter 18: The Battle of Wits
The tension in the air was thick as the countdown clock on Drakken's hologram faded, leaving a sinister silence in its wake. The students at Middleton High were still reeling from the sudden android invasion, their prom night now an afterthought as the gravity of the situation settled in. Kim, Ron, Kevin, and Shego stood in the center of the ballroom, bracing for whatever Drakken had planned next.
A faint beeping sound echoed through the hall.
"I knew it!" Kevin muttered under his breath. "That bomb was a bluff."
Drakken's laughter crackled through the speakers overhead. "Oh, did you really think I'd destroy Middleton so quickly? No, no, no! This was merely a distraction! While you were busy playing hero, I was busy unleashing the real masterpiece of my genius: the Little Devil robots!"
Suddenly, the ground trembled beneath them.
The room's main screen flickered to life, displaying live feeds from around the world. Giant metallic creatures with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp claws were emerging from hidden locations, growing in size as they absorbed energy from the environment. Cities fell into chaos as law enforcement and military forces struggled to contain the mechanical onslaught.
Shego's eyes widened in horror. "Damn it. He rigged a global signal to keep them operational even after we wrecked his local command center."
Kevin's jaw clenched. "Then we need to cut the signal at the source."
Kim's fists clenched. "We need to stop those things!"
Kim turned to Wade, who was hacking into the enemy's systems from his portable tablet. "Wade! Where's the main transmitter?"
Wade's fingers flew across the keyboard. "It's the radio antenna on the rooftop! It's acting as a relay beacon, transmitting Drakken's orders across the entire network. If you destroy it, the entire army goes offline!"
Kevin locked eyes with Shego. "You heard him. Let's move."
Before anyone could react, a spark of electricity crackled from the DJ booth. The seemingly lifeless husk of Darren Cross—the deceptive cyborg that had nearly driven a wedge between Kim and Ron—suddenly reactivated. His broken faceplate revealed the intricate machinery beneath, his once-charming expression now replaced with pure, cold logic.
"Reinitializing combat protocols," Darren announced in a robotic monotone.
Ron barely had time to react before Darren lunged at him, his movements now twice as fast as before.
Ron barely dodged a metal fist that shattered the floor where he had been standing. His eyes darted toward Kim, who was already moving to help, but he threw up a hand to stop her.
"No, KP! This one's mine!"
Darren's robotic limbs whirred, his enhanced systems scanning Ron's every move. "You are an obstacle to the mission. Elimination is required."
Ron gulped but tightened his stance.
"I may not be a genius or a super spy," Ron growled, "but I know one thing: nobody messes with my best friend or my girl!"
The battle began in earnest. Darren threw a rapid series of punches, each one a blur, but Ron, despite his clumsiness, had years of reflexive dodging under his belt. He ducked, rolled, and countered with unpredictable movements. Then, with an acrobatic flip, he landed a solid kick to Darren's exposed wiring.
Sparks flew as Darren momentarily staggered. Ron smirked. "Bet you didn't see that coming, tin can!"
Darren recalibrated instantly and adapted. His hands transformed into electrified blades, crackling with lethal voltage. "Countermeasures engaged."
"Uh-oh," Ron muttered.
Kevin and Shego vs. Drakken: The Battle of WitsKevin and Shego raced up the emergency stairwell, their boots pounding against the metal steps. Behind them, laser fire and explosions echoed through the school as Ron and Kim held off the remaining cyborgs.
As soon as they burst onto the rooftop, they were met with a storm of gunfire.
As soon as they burst onto the rooftop, they were met with a storm of gunfire.
Drakken's last remaining security drones stood in defensive positions around the massive radio antenna, their weapons already trained on the approaching duo.
Shego smirked. "I'll take the left, you take the right?"
Kevin cracked his knuckles. "Don't slow me down, Greenie."
The fight was on.
Shego somersaulted forward, her plasma energy flaring as she obliterated the first wave of drones. Kevin, relying on his brute force and agility, closed the distance in an instant, ripping apart a turret with his bare hands before using its own cannon to blast apart another wave of attackers.
Each moment brought them closer to the antenna, but the defenses only intensified.
Then, a shadow loomed over them.
Drakken had arrived.
Meanwhile, Kevin and Shego stormed into Drakken's secret control room, located above the gymnasium. The villain sat smugly at his throne-like console, his fingers tapping away as holograms displayed the spread of the Little Devils.
The mad scientist stood atop a hovering platform, flanked by two heavily armed android bodyguards. His face twisted with fury, his lab coat tattered, yet his eyes burned with determination.
"Ah, my dear Shego," Drakken mused. "I must admit, I was hurt when you betrayed me. But now? Now I get to watch you fall alongside your little boyfriend!"
Shego crossed her arms, unimpressed. "Face it, Doc. You were always a loser. I just finally got tired of losing with you."
Drakken's eyes darkened with pain, then rage.
"If I can't have you, then no one will!"
Shego ignited her plasma-coated fists. "News flash, Doc. I was never yours to begin with."
With the press of a button, his hovering platform lunged forward, unleashing a barrage of energy blasts.
Kevin and Shego barely dodged in time, rolling apart as the rooftop exploded around them.
Kevin glared at Shego. "You had to piss him off?"
Shego grinned. "Oh, come on. You love me for it."
Kevin smirked. "Fair point."
Kevin cracked his knuckles. "And we're shutting this operation down. Right. Now."
Drakken's android guards lunged at Kevin, forcing him into close-quarters combat. Their reinforced armor made them nearly invulnerable, but Kevin fought ruthlessly, using their own weight against them to send them crashing off the rooftop.
Drakken's lips curled into a grin. "You really think brute force will solve this? My Little Devils are linked to a quantum frequency network! Destroy one, and the others adapt! You can't outfight me. You'll have to outthink me!"
Shego smirked. "Then it's a good thing I know exactly how that tiny brain of yours works."
Drakken's face darkened. "Oh, do you?"
"Yeah," she said, stepping closer. "You always overcomplicate things. You build some brilliant doomsday device, but you always leave one fatal flaw because you get too cocky. And I'm betting your Little Devils are no different."
Kevin stepped beside her. "Shego's right. You rely too much on centralized control. If we shut down the master signal, those bots go down like a house of cards."
Drakken scoffed. "And what makes you think you can even find the master signal?"
Kevin grinned. "Because we already have."
Meanwhile, Shego leapt onto Drakken's hovercraft, tearing into its control panel with her plasma claws.
"NO!" Drakken shouted, struggling to regain control.
The hovercraft spun wildly out of control, colliding with the radio antenna's support beams.
A loud screech of metal filled the air as the entire tower began to collapse.
Drakken's smug expression immediately shattered. "NO!"
The Little Devils paused mid-attack across the world. Military forces wasted no time unloading everything they had onto the frozen machines. One by one, they were taken out.
Kevin turned to Shego. "Told you we had it covered."
Shego grinned. "Not bad, hotshot."
during the fall of hovecraft Drakken, furious and desperate, pulled a hidden override switch, causing the entire base to enter self-destruct mode.
"If I can't get my victory, NO ONE CAN!" he howled for the last time as the walls shook violently.
The force of the impact sent Drakken flying off his platform.
Kevin tried to grab him, but it was too late.
Drakken plummeted from the rooftop, crashing into the pavement four stories below.
A sickening crack echoed through the night.
Blood pooled around his head, his nose dripping crimson. His chest barely moved, each breath shallow and unsteady.
Shego and Kevin stared down at him, neither folded her arms. "Yeah, but for how long?"
The sound of sirens filled the air as Global Justice agents arrived, surrounding Drakken's unconscious body.
He was alive—but his legacy was over.
Kevin and Shego exchanged glances. "We need to get out NOW." when an explosion jolts them out of their trance by the scene.
Upstairs, Ron delivered the final blow to Darren, sending him crashing through the prom stage. Sparks erupted from the cyborg's body as his core overloaded.
Kim ran up. "Ron, are you okay?!"
Ron grinned, brushing dust off his sleeve. "Oh yeah. Just another night in the life of Ron Stoppable!"
The ceiling began to collapse.
Kevin and Shego burst into the room. "Time to go, people!" Kevin shouted.
With the school on the brink of total destruction, the team raced through collapsing hallways. They barely made it outside as the entire structure imploded behind them, engulfed in flames.
They panted, watching from a distance as the last remains of Drakken's failed plan crumbled into ruin.
The world was safe. The Little Devils were gone. Drakken had disappeared in the chaos, but for now, his schemes had been completely dismantled.
Shego turned to Kevin. "So… what now?"
Kevin smirked. "I don't know about you, but I'm thinking about a real vacation. Maybe somewhere where giant robots aren't trying to kill us."
Shego chuckled. "Sounds like a dream."
Kim crossed her arms. "Before you two fly off into the sunset, we do need to talk about where you stand now. Shego, are you still a villain?"
Shego glanced at Kevin, then back at Kim. "Let's just say… I'm keeping my options open."
Ron groaned. "Oh boy, that's not ominous at all."
They all laughed, finally able to breathe easy.
After several days and the dismantling of the drakken operation and its safe houses by global justice Wade was deep in his own mission.
As he combed through the wreckage of Drakken's lab, his eyes widened in shock.
Hidden among the debris, completely intact, was something unexpected:
The Vortex Inductor.
Drakken had repaired it.
Wade swallowed hard, activating his communicator. "Uh… Kevin? You might want to see this."
Kevin, still catching his breath from the battle, frowned. "What is it?"
Wade hesitated. "Drakken fixed the dimensional rift device."
Shego raised an eyebrow. "And that means… what, exactly?"
Kevin's stomach tightened. He knew exactly what it meant.
The Vortex Inductor was his ticket home.
Back to his world.
Back to his life before all of this.
Wade's voice was quiet. "I… I ran the diagnostics. Kevin, if you want to go back to where you came from, this might be your last chance."
Silence fell over the group.
Kim, Ron, and Shego stared at Kevin, waiting for his answer.
Would he stay in this world—with Shego, with the life he'd built here?
Or would he leave it all behind and return to the world he'd once called home?
Kevin exhaled slowly.
"…I need time to think."
