Several years after Neji's birth, Hiashi's daughter, Hinata, turned three. Though it was normally customary to give a branch Hyuga the cursed seal on the next heir's third birthday, things happened, and Neji was not given his own cursed seal at the time. Hizashi was upset that the elders blamed him for them not being able to keep this tradition. Then he pointed out that they were more than welcome to go take his son away that day. However, it was on that day that Neji was with both Kushina and Mikoto, having a sleepover with their own sons. The Hyuga elder then backed off after this, just venting their frustrations and feelings towards Hizashi at the time. Though he was glad that even if it was just for the time, his son was not being locked into the same fate that he was, and he briefly wondered if Kushina and Mikoto planned this in advance somehow. Though Kushina could use her status as the Fourth Hokage's wife currently because of how most of the village viewed her and Naruto, Mikoto was a different story, as she could and would use her status as the Uchiha Clan leader's wife to her advantage at various times.
As time went by, Neji's natural genius with the Hyuga clan's techniques became obvious not just to Hizashi but everyone else in the clan as well. At the same time, Hinata was proving to be ill-suited as the Hyuga's next leader, which was also becoming clear. Her ill-suited status did not come solely from her seeming lack of skill with the Hyuga clan's techniques, though. It was possible that she just lacked the talent and skill that Neji showed, or what made her ill-suited as the next clan heir. Her personality and her drive did not seem to be a proper match for the role. If given the choice between being the Clan leader and just retiring from being a ninja entirely to become a housewife, Hizashi wondered if Hinata would pick the former rather than the latter, even though there would be a third option. Being a Clan leader would not stop you from being able to raise a family after all. Thus Neji's cursed seal was put on hold for the time being, something both he and Hiashi managed to convince the elders to do.
"What is the meaning of this insanity?" Hiashi demanded.
"We were given the demands by the Hidden Cloud Village for what you have done," a Hyuga elder stated.
"You mean saving my only child from being kidnapped and possibly killed for her eyes?" Hisashi exclaimed.
"Though everyone knows this, the Hidden Cloud denied all accusations of the kidnapping and demands your body as compensation for the death of their Head Ninja as per the stipulations of the treaty," another elder stated.
Hizashi was about to say something when he was struck in the face, Dynamic Entry style, all of a sudden by Kushina.
"Your plan is stupid, Dattebane," she declared, shocking everyone as she just appeared seemingly through a nearby wall.
"Kushina! What the hell are you thinking, doing this?" Mikoto then yelled as she slid into view from the opening of the door herself.
"You do not even know what I was about to say at all," Hizashi declared, yelling back at her.
"You were going to offer yourself up as the body double for Hiashi," Kushina said.
"That is stupid," Mikoto then agreed with her friend.
"Hizashi, get these two under control. Seriously, they are your friends. Beyond Logan, Sakumo, and their husbands, only you can calm them down when they get like this," his twin brother stated.
"The Hidden Cloud wants to play games with us, so why not play them right back? There should be something we were supposed to get as compensation for the death of one of our own as per the treaty. Let's just see if they are willing to carry out their side of the treaty when forced to," Kushina suggested.
Sometime later in the Hidden Cloud Village...
"What is the meaning of this?" the Fourth Raikage and Fourth A demanded.
"Apparently, Konoha wants me dead for defending myself," Darui informed him.
"Why would they want that? Was that messenger they sent just supposed to inform us when they were sending over the Hyuga clan leader's body?" A asked.
"They were, but when I turned my back to them, they tried killing me, and, well, I killed them first," Darui told him.
A was then informed that, per the treaty he had signed with Konoha, as compensation for killing a Konoha ninja there as part of official treaty business, they were entitled to the Black Lightning of the Third Raikage. That being what was offered to Konoha in case of the Hidden Cloud in exchange for needing to offer the Byakugan on their end. Thus, the remaining Konoha messenger informed them that if they still wanted Hiashi's body, then the body of Darui, the current holder of the Black Lightning technique, would need to be handed over to them. Of course, just like how the Hidden Cloud denied all accusations in Hiashi's case, Konoha was denying all accusations in this case that A found himself in. So if A really wanted the Byakugan that badly, then he would have to give up the technique of his own father to do so.
Thus, the event that would become known later on as the Hyuga Affair ended. A did not have Darui killed so that his body could be sent to Konoha for them to get the knowledge of Black Lightning from it. Just like the Hidden Cloud Village, Konoha had its methods of getting the information they wanted from a corpse, even if that information was for a technique and not a bloodline limit. Hizashi did not have to give his life up for his brother, and Neji was spared from having to lose his father, and Hiashi from losing his brother, merely because he defended his own child from being kidnapped. Though two wrongs do not make a right, A did not want to risk attacking Konoha again at the moment since he did not want to risk having to deal with all the various headaches that would come with for attempting to mess with the Hyugas like he had.
