Arizona - Part 1
Hank, Olivia and Noah boarded the plane and waited for it to take off. After it took off, Olivia told Noah that he needed to work on his homework. Olivia put her head on Hank's shoulder and fell asleep. Hank kissed her forehead.
"Hank."
"Yeah."
"Do you love my mom?"
"Yeah, I do."
"A lot?"
"Very much."
"Would you even marry her?"
"Yeah, I would."
"Good. I want you to marry her. I wouldn't mind moving to Chicago."
Noah went back to his homework for a while and Hank noticed that Olivia had a smirk on her face. Hank fell asleep and after a while, Noah put his homework back in his bag. He watched out the window for a while and then he ended up falling asleep. Everyone was awake before the plane made its descent into Phoenix. Once they landed and the plane got to the gate, they got off and headed to Baggage Claim. They got their luggage and went to get their rental car before Hank drove to the hotel.
"Can we go swimming?"
"Sure. There's a pool at the hotel and in the complex where Olive lives."
"Yay!"
"It sure is pretty here."
"It's beautiful."
"I would love to see the Grand Canyon but we probably don't have time."
"Daniel's birthday party is tomorrow, so we could go on Sunday. If Noah doesn't want to go, he could probably stay with Olive."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
They arrived at the hotel and went to get checked in. They went up to their room, changed their clothes and headed over to Olive's. Hank knew Olive had taken the day off from work. They arrived at her condo and got out of the car. Hank rang the doorbell and Olive answered the door.
"Hey, Hank! It is so good to see you."
"You too, kid."
Hank hugged Olive.
"Olivia, it's nice to see you and Noah again."
"You too."
"Hi Olive."
"Where's my boy?"
"He's taking a nap after he threw a fit about it."
"I see Daniel takes after you."
"Ha, ha!"
"Come on in."
They walked in and sat down. Hank put his arm around Olivia.
"Olive, I haven't even seen the entire place but this is a beautiful home."
"Thank you. I love it here most of the time. I've been here for almost 3 years and I still haven't gotten used to how hot it gets."
"The heat would be way too much for me."
"I have news."
"Everything ok?"
"Yeah. Olivia and I finally decided that we are going to be in a relationship."
"Hank, that's great! I am so happy for you. Justin would have been happy too."
"I think he would have too. Camille wanted me to be happy. We realize the long distance thing will be hard, especially if we're going to make this work but I'm willing to try."
"I am too. Every relationship I have been in has caused a conflict for my job. The only one that won't is this one."
"I have news too and I hope you won't get mad when I tell you this."
"Ok."
"I've been seeing someone for about 7 months. His name is Greg and I met him in a support group I have been attending. His son Zach is in Daniel's class at Preschool, the same daycare and he has become his best friend. I know it has only been 3 years since Justin's death but we enjoy each other's company."
"That's great, Olive. I'm happy for you."
"Thanks. Can I get anyone anything to drink? I have lemonade, iced tea, juice, water or milk."
"Iced tea."
"Me too."
"Lemonade please."
Olive went into the kitchen to get the drinks.
"Hank, are you ok with that?"
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be? All I care about is that she's happy and he treats her right."
Olive came back and handed everyone their glasses.
"Thanks."
"Thank you."
"Thank you."
"Sure. How was your flight?"
"It was fine. We flew into Chicago from New York this morning and then we stopped at the District for a while before we headed back to the airport."
"That sounds like a lot of flying."
"It is but at least we had enough time in between the two flights to leave and come back."
"I'd like to go to New York sometime."
"You can come visit anytime you want."
"Erin invited us too but she is always out of town."
"Is she planning to be here for this?"
"She wasn't sure."
"That's what she said when I last talked to her too."
The doorbell rang, so Olive went to answer it. Then they came into the living room.
"Hank, Olivia and Noah, this is Greg Walsh. Greg, this is my father-in-law Hank, his girlfriend Olivia Benson and her son Noah."
"It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
"Where's Zach?"
"He is at my parents'. I was going to see if you wanted to have dinner but you have company."
"We'll take Daniel. You two go out for dinner."
"Hank, are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure."
"Thanks."
"MOMMY!"
"I'll be right back."
Olive left and went upstairs to get Daniel.
"You better not hurt her."
"I won't. I care about both of them. I have my late wife's parents to deal with and her mother isn't happy that I already started seeing someone. They live in LA. I think they're afraid that if I'm with someone and it gets serious enough for marriage, which right now, it's not, the person I want to be with will take his mother's place. I'm sure you feel the same way. I want my in-laws to be comfortable with the person I'm with and I want you to be comfortable with me. Even if this relationship does eventually lead to marriage, I completely understand that you want to be a big part of Daniel's life because he's your only connection to your son. Believe me, I get it. Zach never knew his mother. She was killed in a car accident with he was 6 months old. If it wasn't for my parents, I don't know what I would have done. I'm a cop and I work nights quite a bit. The night my wife was in the accident, I was on duty and one of the first to respond to the call. It was a good thing I wasn't alone because that did not go well. I took a leave of absence from work but with not a whole lot of money coming in, Zach and I moved in with my parents until a little over a year ago. Once I had gone back to work, I could afford to put him in daycare. My parents travel a lot. I work more during the day now but on occasion, I will still work a night shift. I have two options if I have to work a second shift. He stays with my parents quite a bit or Olive will watch him for me. I met her in a support group and we hit it off. We decided to introduce the boys when we found out they were the same age. Daniel is just a few days older than Zach. I live down the street. We've known each other for a couple years but until after Halloween of last year, we only did stuff that included the boys and other people from our support group. We enjoyed each other's company, so then we decided to do more just the 4 of us. Then we found ourselves going out a lot more without the boys. You're a cop too, right?"
"Yeah. We both are. I head the Intelligence Unit for the Chicago Police Department and Olivia heads the Special Victims Unit for the NYPD. I'm a Sergeant and she's a Lieutenant. When we met in 2014, she was still a Sergeant."
"How do you manage with the distance?"
"We actually just started in the serious relationship. We had a friends with benefits thing going on but the real feelings have always been there. We just didn't really know how to admit it. We're going to see how it goes. You seem like a real nice guy and I look forward to getting to know you better. I hope things work out between you and Olive."
"Thanks. I look forward to getting to know you better too. How old are you, Noah?"
"I'm 6 but I'll be 7 soon."
"You into any sports?"
"I love baseball."
"Me too."
Olive came downstairs with Daniel.
"Go see who's here."
"Ok."
Daniel went into the living room.
"Olivia! Noah!"
Daniel ran over and hugged Olivia and Noah.
"What about me?"
"Hi Papa!"
Daniel then hugged Hank.
"Hi Greg."
"Hey, Buddy."
Olivia got a text from Fin saying they had a case and needed warrants, so who did they need to call? She texted him back and said to contact Jack McCoy for now. After she was done, she rolled her eyes.
"Everything ok?"
"Yeah. That was Fin asking who to contact for warrants. I told him to contact the District Attorney for the time being."
"Daniel, you are going to spend some time with Papa, Olivia and Noah tonight, so Greg and I can go out for dinner. Would you like that?"
"Yes."
"Olive, do you need help setting up for the party tomorrow?"
"Yeah, actually, I do. We are having it for both boys but it's going to be at the clubhouse and pool. We invited their friends from Preschool. Not everyone is coming of course, since it's a holiday weekend. Greg's parents and my sister will be there. His mom and my sister are coming early to help set up."
"Zach's other grandma refuses to come but I told her that was her choice."
"Why can't she just be happy that you're moving on?"
"That's the way I see it. Her mom can't move on, so she thinks no one should. I put my foot down and said she can't just see Zach whenever she feels like it. It's on my terms or not at all. Her dad completely agrees with me. He'll be here though."
"What time do you want me here?"
"10?"
"That sounds fine."
They talked for a while and then Olive went to get an overnight bag for Daniel and then Hank, Olivia and the boys left. Greg went home to change and Olive got ready as well. Hank stopped at a restaurant he had been to before, so the 4 of them could have dinner. After dinner, they went back to the hotel and got ready to go to the pool. After everyone was ready, they opened the door and Erin was there.
"Hey, kid."
"Hey."
"Hey, Erin."
"Hey. I'm surprised to see you and Noah."
"Last minute invitation. He was able to get us on the same flight."
"We are going to try to be in a relationship."
"It's about damn time!"
"Love you too, Erin!"
"Admit it. You miss me."
"I do."
"Hey, Noah. Hey, Daniel."
"Hey, Erin."
"Auntie!"
"Let me go change and I will meet you down at the pool."
"Ok."
Hank and Olivia took the boys to the pool, so they could go swimming, while Erin went to change her clothes. When she was ready, she met them at the pool and joined them in the water.
"I'm glad you could make it."
"I am too. So, when did you two decide to give it a shot?"
"Yesterday."
"Great. Liv, how did that case go?"
"Peter framed Miller and said he did it for me. I meant more to him than the case and then he left, so we will be getting a new ADA."
"And yet you chose Hank?"
"Erin!"
"I cared about Peter but not that way. My feelings for Hank have been there for a very long time. I just couldn't admit it."
"Here I thought Hank was the problem."
Hank splashed Erin in the face.
"Smart ass!"
Erin splashed Hank back.
"Love you too."
Olivia shook her head.
"Olive has a new man."
"Oh, she finally told you?"
"How long have you known?"
"Christmas. She didn't know how to tell you because she wasn't sure how you'd react."
"He seems like a nice guy and I can't wait to get to know him better. He told me that if things start to get serious, he understands that I still want to be a big part of Daniel's life."
"Talking to Olive, she feels the same way about Zach's grandparents but apparently they don't support the relationship."
"He said his father-in-law was fine with it and was coming in for the party but she refused."
Another couple came in and got into the pool.
"So, you're really ok with Olive dating again?"
"Yeah. Justin wanted her to be happy. This Greg guy seems like he'd be good for both of them and Daniel needs a dad."
The other couple came over to them.
"Were you talking about Greg Walsh?"
"Yeah. You know him?"
"He was married to our daughter. How do you know him?"
"I'm Olive's father-in-law, Hank."
"I'm Marty and this is Emma."
"He said you weren't coming."
"I wasn't going to but we don't see Zach enough as it is. I didn't handle our daughter's death very well. She was our only child and Zach is our only connection to her."
"Yeah, I get that. Justin was my only child and I didn't handle it very well either. Justin was supposed to have been a twin but his sister was a stillborn. My wife died from ovarian cancer 9 years ago and then I lost Justin 3 years ago. This is Erin Lindsay, who has been like a daughter to me since she was 15 when she moved in with us. Justin loved her like a sister. This is Olivia Benson and her son Noah. I've known her for 4½ years but we just decided to be in a serious relationship after being friends for that entire time. Greg assured me that he has no problems with me being in Daniel's life if things start to get serious between him and Olive. I want her to be happy and so did Justin. Greg seems like a nice guy and there are times when I don't trust anyone. I'm a cop, so I'm suspicious of everyone. Ask Erin. She worked in my unit. According to Erin, Olive feels the same way Greg does. She still wants you to be a big part of Zach's life. Daniel deserves to have a dad."
"Zach missed out so much by not having a mother. I kind of wish we had been around more for them after she died. I guess I really need to give Olive a chance. Zach deserves to have a mother. I can agree with that. I'm glad we met you."
"I'm glad we met too."
"Papa, I have to go potty."
"Me too."
"Noah, can you take him?"
"Yeah."
"You sure?"
"Yes."
"I'll go too."
Erin and the boys got out of the pool and went to find the bathroom.
"We're hoping Greg will bring Zach to come see us, so we got Zach passes for Disneyland for his birthday."
"I did the same thing for Daniel. He's been bugging Olive to take him, so I told her that I would do this."
"When did you do it for?"
"She said he was done with school next week so the first full week in June."
"That's when we did it for too. Where are you from?"
"I'm from Chicago and I'm a Sergeant with the Chicago Police Department. Olivia is in New York and is a Lieutenant with the NYPD. We're both Detectives. Erin moved to New York a couple years ago and is working for the FBI."
"How did the two of you meet if you're in different cities?"
"We worked on a couple cases together, so we became really good friends. The feelings have been there for a while but we never really admitted it until yesterday. I have a habit of getting into relationships that cause a conflict for my job. For once, I'm in one that doesn't."
"Do you like the fact that she outranks you?"
"Honestly, it doesn't bother me. She was a Sergeant when we met and was promoted about a year later."
"I never wanted to be a Lieutenant but NYPD Brass didn't want a Sergeant heading the unit."
"That'll do it."
Erin and the boys came back and everyone kept talking until it was time to put the boys to bed, so everyone went up to their rooms to get some sleep.
