Summer Heat
A heat wave had hit the Midwest and East Coast. To make matters even worse, New York City had had severe thunderstorms hit the area and cause power outages to a large portion of the city, which meant air no conditioning and because there were so many people without power, it was going to take a while before it was restored. Everyone in SVU had been without power. Carisi took Amanda, Frannie and the girls to his parents' house, Fin went to stay with Ken, Alejandro and Jaden, since they did have power and Olivia and Noah tried to do what they could at home with battery operated lights and fans. Olivia told Noah that he had limited use of the tablet because there was no way to charge it. They were leaving for Chicago in the morning and neither of them could wait. The airport thankfully had power.
They got up the next morning and got ready. She drove to the airport and then once she parked her SUV, they went to get checked in. They went through security and went to find something for breakfast. While they were having breakfast, they ran into Trevor, who was grabbing coffee.
"Olivia, Noah, hi."
"Hey, Langan."
"Hi Mr. Langan."
"Are you without power?"
"Oh, yeah. You?"
"No."
"Of course not. Nothing like that ever happens on the Upper East Side. Just on the west side."
"You're bitchier than normal."
"You'd be bitchy too if you haven't had air conditioning and a proper night's sleep for several nights now because of it. You ready, Noah?"
"Yes."
Olivia and Noah threw their trash away and then went to their gate. Olivia was able to find a spot to charge both her phone and the tablet. Trevor ended up at the same gate.
"What? Don't tell me you're on this flight."
"Ok, I won't."
"Trevor, I apologize. This damn heat is getting to me."
"I don't blame you. You're welcome to stay at my place if this happens again."
"I'm engaged."
"Yeah, I know but I'm just offering it in case you and Noah need somewhere to stay sometime. I have plenty of room."
"What happens if you end up losing power too? My entire squad is without power. Carisi took Rollins, her girls and their dog Frannie to his parents' on Staten Island and Fin is staying with his son, his son's husband and their son. Lucy went to stay with her parents in New Jersey and offered to take us with her. Noah and I toughed it out at home as hard as it was. We have battery operated lights and fans. Poor Noah. The more humid it is, the curlier his hair gets."
"My sister is the same way. When it's this bad, she has to wear her hair up."
"Is she older or younger?"
"Younger. She's the one that's married and has the kids."
"Where does she live?"
"Chicago and so do my parents. They moved out there to be closer to their grandchildren."
"So, you're close then."
"Not really. My aunt is turning 80 and there's a birthday party for her, so I'm going out there for that. She's my favorite aunt."
"Everyone lives in Chicago?"
"My aunt is in Milwaukee but my sister is having the party."
"Are they in the city?"
"Actually, no. They live in a million dollar home in the western suburbs and have to show it off to the entire family."
"And you live in a several million dollar condo on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, so don't feel bad."
"Except every time I'm with my family, I get asked a million questions about my personal life. My aunt is really the only one that respects my privacy."
"I take it that nothing you do is good enough for your parents."
"Pretty much. My mom never worked a day in her life and neither has my sister. My views on that are different. I feel it's the woman's choice as to whether or not she works."
"It should be. Hank and I are still trying to figure out who is going to relocate. If it's me, I could decide to retire or I could decide to transfer out there. If it's him, he said he may retire."
Then Erin found them.
"Hey."
"Hey, Erin."
"Hey, kiddo."
"Hey, Erin."
"Erin, you remember Trevor Langan, right?"
"Yeah."
"I'm glad you could come with us for the weekend anyway."
"I ended up taking the entire week off. It's been a while, since I had a vacation anyway."
"Trevor, how long are you in Chicago?"
"Thankfully only through Sunday. That's long enough for me."
A little while later, the boarded the flight. Trevor was in First Class and Olivia, Noah and Erin were in Coach. After a while, the flight took off. When they landed at O'Hare, Trevor waited for them and the four of them walked to Baggage Claim together. Trevor saw his dad with his youngest niece and nephew and rolled his eyes.
"You look like your dad."
"Yes, I know."
"UNCLE TREVOR!"
They ran up to him and gave him a big hug.
"Hey, you two!"
"I missed you."
"Me too."
Then his dad came up to them.
"Did I not tell you two to stay with me?"
"Sorry, Grandpa."
"You look good, Son."
"Thanks. Caroline, you get cuter every time I see you."
"Thank you."
"And Matthew, you have gotten taller."
"That's what Mommy says too."
"You just brought these two?"
"Yep. Travis went to Great America with his friends for the day and Amy is over at a friend's house."
Trevor grabbed his bag, Olivia and Erin had their luggage and were about to head out.
"Trevor, enjoy your weekend. I'm sure I'll talk to you when I get back."
"Probably. Olivia, this is my dad John, my nephew Matt and my niece Caroline. Dad, this is Olivia Benson, her son Noah and her fiancé's daughter, Erin Lindsay. Olivia and I go way back to when I was a Defense Attorney. She's a Lieutenant with the NYPD."
"She's the one you helped with the adoption."
"Yes."
"It's nice to meet you, Lieutenant."
"You too."
"Noah, how old are you?"
"Almost 7."
"Matt is 7. Caroline is about 5, Amy is 10 and Travis is 13."
"Your daughter has her hands full."
"Definitely. Where are you headed?"
"Into the city."
Then Trudy came in.
"Did you three get lost?"
"No."
"I've got the squad running. It's hot out there."
"Great. More heat. I hope Hank's air conditioner is working."
"It should be. I haven't heard that it wasn't. Good to see you again, Langan."
"You too, Sergeant."
"It was nice to meet all of you."
"You too."
Olivia, Erin and Noah left with Trudy, while Trevor left with his dad, niece and nephew. Trudy drove to the District. They all went in and Intelligence was just coming back.
"Hey!"
"Hey, yourself."
Hank kissed Olivia and hugged Noah.
"I missed you."
"I missed you too."
"Did the power outage effect you at all?"
"Oh yeah. Carisi took Rollins, Frannie and the girls to stay with his parents on Staten Island and Fin went to stay with his son, son-in-law and grandson. We toughed it out at home with battery operated fans and lights. I'm looking forward to having air conditioning for a week."
"The house is nice and cool. I bought a new pool for the boys."
"Oh, sure, you get one for them but not me."
"Actually, I got one of those family pools."
"I love you. You know that, right?"
"Yes. I love you too."
"You gonna have us over for a pool party?"
"No. It's not that big. Olive and Daniel will be here later for the week."
"Thanks for picking us up, Trudy."
"You're welcome."
They all went upstairs and then Hank took Olivia into his office. He shut the door and then they sat down.
"I'm planning to retire."
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
"Yeah, I am. I just want to be with you."
"Well, I just want to get this over with. I don't want to wait."
"For what?"
"Getting married."
"You're sure?"
"Yeah."
"Ok. We can go get the marriage license."
"Ok. I do want my squad here, since they are my family."
"That's fine. We will tell Erin, Olive and the boys later."
Hank kissed Olivia and then they left Hank's office.
"Olivia and I have something to take care of, so do you want me to drop you and Noah off at the house?"
"Isn't that where you're headed?"
"No."
"What are you up to? You can't hide anything from me, you know."
"We'll tell you two outside."
"Why can't we hear about it?"
"You will eventually, just not now."
"That seems fair."
Hank gave Adam a look and then the four of them left. Trudy went out with them, so they could get their stuff.
"Noah wants to go to the fire station."
"Ok."
"We're getting married."
"I know that."
"Soon. We are heading to get our marriage license. You, Olive and the boys will already be here and she wants her squad here."
"Can I plan your party afterward? Just at a restaurant somewhere. Nothing too fancy."
"I could agree to that."
"Me too."
"Can I help?"
"Sure. You know who else you should include though is Trudy."
"Yeah, I'll talk to her."
"Does that mean one of you finally decided who will be relocating?"
"I am. I'm retiring and moving there. My heart really hasn't been in it since Al died. I'll probably see Olive even less than I do now."
"Are you leaving Antonio in charge?"
"Yeah."
Hank dropped Erin and Noah off at the fire station and then he and Olivia went to get their marriage license. After they did that, they went to get the rings. While Erin was at the fire station, she contacted everyone from Intelligence and had them meet her there, so they could all plan the party. Olivia called her squad and made sure they could all get there. They were all more than happy to leave New York for a few days. Erin had someone take her and Noah back to the house even though they didn't have any of their stuff. They put a movie in and hung out in the cool house. Erin called to make a reservation for Hank and Olivia in the Honeymoon Suite at one of the hotels for a few days.
Hank and Olivia decided to head to the airport to go pick up Olive and Daniel. When they arrived, they were waiting outside.
"Hey, Hank."
"Hey, kid."
"Papa!"
"Hey, Buddy."
Hank put the suitcases in the back with the others, while Olive put Daniel in the car seat that Hank already had in his SUV.
"Hey, Olivia."
"Hey."
"Gramma!"
"Hi Sweetheart!"
"Where are Erin and Noah?"
"We left them at the fire station but she texted Olivia and said someone was going to take them to the house. We have news."
"So do I."
"You go first."
"I got a job offer in New York."
"You did what?"
"Yeah. As much as I don't like winter, I can't deal with the hot weather in Arizona. I don't know what I was thinking other than I wanted to be closer to my sister. I know I need to get him in a Preschool pretty quick but the chances of that happening are probably nonexistent. What's your news?"
"We're getting married next week and I am planning to retire and move to New York."
"No way! I am so happy for you two."
"Thanks. Erin is working on the party, which I'm guessing they did while they were at the fire station."
"My squad is coming in Sunday, since we will probably do this early last week."
"That means we are all going to be in the same city."
"Yes, it does."
"Hank, I've been looking for bigger places."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
"Have you given your notice yet?"
"Not yet. I haven't talked to the squad yet either."
"We could probably handle a long distance marriage for a little while."
"We knew the distance was going to be an issue when we agreed to start seeing each other but we've handled being in a long distance relationship for two years."
"I know."
"The time will fly by and then we will be together all the time."
"I know it will."
Hank drove home and once they arrived, he bought all the bags in. Noah was asleep in Erin's lap and Erin was asleep as well. Daniel ran in and saw them but then he ran back to where everyone else was.
"Shhhhhh! Auntie and Noah are sleeping."
"We know."
Olive rolled her eyes.
"I'm hungry."
"What do you want for dinner?"
"Portillo's."
"That's not a bad idea."
Daniel went upstairs to his and Noah's room and played for a little while and then once Erin and Noah woke up, they went to Portillo's for dinner. After dinner, they all came back to the house and watched a movie together before going to bed.
