A/N: I came up with this after watching the episode of SVU that aired on 10-31-19. There could eventually be a second part to this but I haven't decided yet. I don't own any of the characters.

Bad News

Olivia, Hank and Noah were walking and Olivia had heard someone call her name.

"Olivia."

She turned around. It was her half-brother, Simon.

"Simon."

"Hey."

He looked at Noah.

"Hi. I'm Simon."

"I'm Noah."

"I'm Hank."

"Can I get some ice cream?"

"Go ahead. I'll catch up with you two in a minute."

"Ok."

Noah and Hank went over to the cart, so Noah could decide what he wanted.

"Who are they?"

"Noah is my son and Hank is my husband."

"You're married and I have a nephew?"

"Yep. How's your family? The kids?"

"I don't know. Tracy took them and left. The last time I saw them was the last time I saw you. I've been clean and sober for 5 years."

"That's good to hear."

"Can I take you and your family to lunch? I would love to get to know my nephew."

"I don't know."

"I'm clean. I promise. Wednesday is my day off. You pick the place."

"I'll talk to Hank and get back to you."

"Ok."

Simon walked away and then Olivia went to join Hank and Noah at the ice cream cart.

"You ok?"

"I don't even know."

"Who was that guy?"

"My brother Simon."

"Ok. I remember you telling me about him."

"He wants to take us out to lunch. Wednesday is his day off."

"All of us?"

"Yep. He wants to get to know his nephew. The assured me that he has been clean and sober for 5 years."

Noah got his ice cream and then they went wherever they were going. Later that night after they had put Noah to bed, Olivia was in their bed when Hank came out of the bathroom.

"This is really bothering you, isn't it?"

"It is. Simon is as much trouble for me as Kim is for Amanda. Whenever one or the other shows up, something bad always happens. Things are finally going right for me and I don't want him to mess things up. I trust him about as much as I trusted Sheila and she took Noah."

"I won't let anything happen to you or Noah. You have my word on that. Looking out for you and Noah is the main reason why I retired and moved here. Let's meet the guy for lunch and if at any time you feel that something isn't right, we can go."

"Ok. I'll call him and we can meet him on Wednesday before Noah's dance class."

"That's fine."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

They kissed each other and fell asleep in each other's arms. The next day, Olivia made a reservation and left a message for Simon that she talked it over with Hank and they would meet him for lunch on Wednesday. She told him the place and the time.

When Wednesday arrived, Olivia was starting to feel unsure about the whole thing.

"Liv, are you ok?"

"I ran into my brother Simon the other day and he wanted to take the 3 of us out for lunch. We're meeting him today before we take Noah to his dance class. He wants to get to know his nephew. I told Hank that Simon is as much trouble for me as Kim is for you and when one or the other shows up, something bad always happens."

"That's a good way of puttin' it. I finally told Kim that if she ever stepped foot in New York City again, I'd have her arrested. I haven't heard from her since she left to go back to Georgia. I've talked to Mama and she sends gifts for the girls but we still don't have the relationship that she has with Kim. I probably never will."

"I know how that goes. I wish I had had a better relationship with my mother too but I got blamed for everything that went wrong in her life. Sometimes I wish she had just aborted me or at least put me up for adoption."

"Don't say that. You have accomplished so much in your life and you do what you do because of what happened to her. If I was the one abducted by William Lewis, I wouldn't have been able to handle him the way you did. I blame myself for that happening to you because I was the one that arrested him in the first place."

"That wasn't your fault at all and you've been through enough with what Patton did to you."

"Does Voight now about what you told me not that long ago?"

"Oh, yeah. There are no secrets between us. I never even told Dr. Lindstrom about that when I was going to therapy regularly."

"Do Cassidy or Tucker know about that?"

"No. I never felt that emotional connection to either of them the way I do with Hank. When Brian finally told me what his coach had done to him, he told me that I was still the love of his life. I told him that I was with Hank and truly happy. I still care about Brian and probably always will. I may still tell Ed because he's been so supportive of my relationship with Hank."

"Who would have thought that the two of them would have ended up becoming friends?"

"Certainly not me. That's for sure. I should go."

Olivia left and let Hank know she was on her way. She picked Hank up and then they got Noah at school. They went to the restaurant and were seated outside, so they could watch for Simon. Over an hour had gone by and Simon still hadn't shown up.

"Mom, when is your friend going to get here? I don't want to be late for dance class."

"Hold on, Noah."

Olivia got up and went to ask if anyone had seen Simon come in and when they said no, she decided to call him. She got his voicemail.

"Simon, it's me. We're here waiting for you. If you weren't going to make it, you could have at least called me to tell me that instead of making us sit here for over an hour waiting on you. Call me back when you get this."

Olivia stopped to think what she had said before she hung up.

"You know what, don't call me back. In fact, don't call me again."

Olivia hung up the phone and went back to the table. They ordered something light to eat and once they ate, they took Noah to his dance class. Hank stayed to wait for him but walked her out.

"You ok?"

"I told him not to contact me again. I don't need this. I need to get back."

"Ok."

"I'll let you know when we get home."

"Ok."

Olivia kissed Hank and then she headed back to the Precinct and went up.

"How'd it go?"

"He never showed up. I tried calling him and got his voicemail. I told him he should have called me if he wasn't going to get there and not to contact me again. I'm tired of his excuses."

"You handled it the way would should have."

"I hope I did."

They worked on the case and then a little while later, Olivia's phone rang. It was Melinda telling her that she had Simon's body at the morgue. She hung up the phone and ran out. She drove to the morgue and went in.

"Melinda."

"Hey. I'm sorry I had to call you like this. I needed someone to ID the body and you were down as his next of kin."

"Ok."

Melinda pulled the cover down.

"Yeah, that's him. What happened?"

"Early toxicology results show heroin in his system."

"He told me he was clean."

"We also found traces of fentanyl. Based on the amount of heroin in his system, I don't think it was a suicide. He just got a bad batch and it was the fentanyl that killed him."

"Thanks."

Melinda put her hand on Olivia's shoulder and then she left the room. Olivia stood over the body and broke down.

"Why, Simon? You told me you were clean. You were finally getting your life back on track. I'm sorry if this had anything to do with me. I was just upset when you didn't show up. You were my only blood family. I really wish things could have been different between us."

Olivia covered his body up and then she walked out. She headed back to the Precinct.

"You ok, Liv?"

"No. I rushed out of here in such a hurry because I got a call from Melinda Warner. She had Simon's body in the morgue. He overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl but she doesn't think it was a suicide. He told me he was clean. What if my message was the last thing he heard?"

"Liv, you don't know that. Did Dr. Warner give you a time of death?"

"No and I didn't think to ask."

"Go home and be with your boys."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

Then Fin came back.

"Fin, can you handle things? I need a few days."

"What's goin' on, Liv?"

"Remember my half-brother, Simon?"

"Yeah. What about him?"

"We ran into him a few days ago and he told me he was clean and sober for 5 years now. He said he wanted to take us out to lunch, so he could get to know his nephew. I made the reservations and Hank, Noah and I went but he never showed up. I left him a message basically indicating that I was not happy and not to contact me again. I later got a call from Melinda and she told me his body was in the morgue. I was down as his next of kin. She said he overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl but doesn't think it was a suicide. What if my message to him was the last thing he heard and I'm the reason he turned to drugs again?"

"Liv, don't blame yourself for this. He was as bad for you as Kim has been for Rollins. You have us and Noah and Voight. We may not be blood family but we're still your family. Do what you gotta do, Liv."

"Thank you."

"No problem. I'm always here for you, Baby Girl. You know that."

"Yeah, I know."

"Me too, Liv."

"Thanks."

Olivia grabbed her stuff and headed out. As she got out to her SUV, Hank was out there waiting for her.

"Come here."

Olivia ran into Hank's arms and broke down. She cried for several minutes.

"I am so sorry you have to go through this."

"Thanks. How'd you find out?"

"Melinda called and was worried about you."

"Is Noah ok?"

"Yeah. He is over at a friend's for dinner."

"Ok."

"Let's go home."

Hank drove home and when they arrived, dinner was about ready.

"I'm not really that hungry."

"Try to at least eat something."

"Why do I feel so guilty? What if his message was the last thing he heard and I'm the reason he turned to drugs again?"

"Sometimes when a body is found, it's been 12 hours or more that it's been dead. We'll know more when we know the time of death. He could have been dead before he was even supposed to meet us and that's why he never called."

They ate dinner and then Hank cleaned up, while Olivia went to relax on the sofa with her wine. Then the doorbell rang. Hank went to answer it. It was Ed.

"Hey."

"Hey. Come on in."

"Thanks."

Ed came in and took his jacket off. Then he went into the living room and saw Olivia.

"Rough day?"

"Don't start."

Hank brought him a beer.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

"I need a refill. Better yet, just bring me the bottle."

"You're drinking again? What happened now?"

Hank went to refill Olivia's glass.

"We ran into my brother, well, half-brother, Simon, the other day and he told me that he's been clean and sober for 5 years. He asked if he could take the 3 of us to lunch, so he could get to know his nephew. We agreed to meet for lunch today and I made the reservations. He never showed up. I called him to find out where he was and basically told him not to ever contact me again. I got a call from Melinda Warner and she said his body was brought into the morgue. The early toxicology report said he overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl but she doesn't think it was a suicide because of the amount."

"Now she's blaming herself because she thinks her message could have been the last thing he heard and it's her fault that he turned to drugs."

"It is my fault."

"Babe, it's not."

"You don't know that."

"Chances are, it isn't. I told you, wait until you know the exact time of death before you start blaming yourself."

"I know you never had a great relationship with him and he was more trouble than he wasn't, just like Rollins' sister but I am sorry for your loss."

"Thank you."

"Did he have a family?"

"He said he hasn't seen his kids since the last time he saw me. Tracy took them and left. The boy, Ty, is Tracy's and their daughter is Olivia. I have a niece and Noah has a cousin that we will never know."

"Do you know how to get a hold of Tracy?"

"Melinda gave me Simon's belongings, including his phone, so maybe I should try calling her."

Olivia got up and got Simon's phone out of her purse. She then went upstairs to the office and scrolled through his contacts to find Tracy's. She got an automated voicemail, so she wasn't sure if she even had the right number. She left a message saying who she was, who she was looking for and if she had the right person, to please call her back. She went back downstairs just as the doorbell was ringing again.

"I got it, Honey."

"Ok."

Olivia opened the door.

"Hey, Mel."

"Hey. You doing ok?"

"I guess. Come on in."

Melinda came in, took her jacket off and joined Hank and Ed in the living room.

"Tucker."

"Warner."

"Hank."

"Melinda."

Olivia told Melinda everything that had happened leading up to what had happened.

"The preliminary results of the autopsy was that he had been dead at least 12 hours prior to being found."

"I did just go into his phone to call his ex and he had several voicemail messages and I'm assuming one of them is mine."

"Did you get a hold of her?"

"I got one of those automated voicemails. I left a message to say who I was, who I was looking for and to please call me back if I had the right person."

"That's all you can do."

"Even if Tracy doesn't care, his daughter has the right to know."

"How old is the daughter?"

"I think she's a little older than Noah."

"Did he have any other family?"

"He had a mother but I'm not sure if she's still alive."

Olivia looked through Simon's phone to see if there was a contact for his mother.

"I don't see anything."

Then Olivia's phone rang. She noticed it was Amanda, so she answered it. Amanda said they were done with the case and wanted to know if she needed anything before she left the Precinct. She was going to get the girls and then come over. Fin and Carisi had something to take care of and then they would be over too. Olivia asked her if she could do a search for Simon's mother to see if she was still alive. Olivia gave her the name and then she hung up.

"So, what happens if his mother is deceased and Tracy doesn't care? Then what happens?"

"Once the autopsy is completed, the body will be released to the next of kin and then you can make whatever arrangements."

"I'm kind of guessing if I'm his next of kin, his mother may be deceased."

"Maybe he hasn't spoken to her either."

"I don't even know how I ended up being his next of kin. It's been a long time since he and I have spoken."

"Maybe he realized he wanted to be a part of your life and make a connection with you."

"Yeah, probably but why would he tell me he was clean and sober for 5 years and then die of a drug overdose?"

"Maybe someone got to him and injected him with the drug."

"I am running all possible tests on him, including under his nails."

"Maybe he owed someone money and because he didn't pay up, they injected him with the drug. Maybe this has something to do with you. Didn't that Miller guy threaten you?"

"Yeah. I'm still scared for Noah's safety because of that."

"Erin said the FBI is working to take down Miller and any of his associates, so we may want to talk to her about this. I have no doubt he is probably having you followed even from prison."

The doorbell rang again, so Hank got up to get it. It was Erin.

"Hey."

"Hey."

Erin came in and took her jacket off.

"Did you eat yet?"

"No."

"I'll get you something."

"Thanks."

"Melinda, can I get you anything?"

"I'm good. Thanks."

Hank went into the kitchen to warm up something for Erin. Erin went into the living room and sat down. Then Olivia told her what had happened.

"I'm sorry, Liv. Is this being investigated?"

"Not yet. I want to get the results of the autopsy from Melinda first."

"Get me what information you can like where they found the body and I'll see if Miller has any possible connection to Simon's death. They gave me the Miller case, since it's personal for me. This son of a bitch goes after my family, I'm going after him. He will be sorry he messed with you. That's all I can say."

"Olivia, can I give her that information?"

"Absolutely. I want to know what happened but I don't want to get the NYPD involved."

"Come by in the morning and I will give you what I have so far."

"Ok. Thanks."

"Sure."

"Thank you, Erin."

"No problem. Where's my little bro?"

"He is at a friend's for dinner."

Erin went into the kitchen and then the doorbell rang again, so Olivia got up to answer it. It was Amanda, the girls and Kat.

"Captain, I am sorry for your loss."

"Thanks, Kat. I appreciate it. Come on in."

"Thanks."

"You hungry?"

"I am."

"Me too."

Hank came out of the kitchen.

"Two more."

"Ok."

Hank went back to the kitchen to heat more food up.

"Can I watch a movie?"

"Sure, Sweetie."

Amanda and Kat sat down, while Olivia took Jesse to the family room and she picked a movie. Olivia then put the movie in for her before coming back into the living room.

"Melinda, this is Officer Kat Tamin, the newest addition to SVU. Kat, this is Dr. Melinda Warner, the Medical Examiner."

"Nice to meet you, Kat."

"You too, Dr. Warner. You're Captain Tucker, right?"

"Yep."

"Someone you've never investigated."

"Funny."

"Ok, so, Sharon Marsden is deceased. I got you the last known address for Simon too."

"Ok. Thanks for looking into that and getting me his address."

"No problem. Is this gonna be investigated?"

"Erin is going to do it. I'm starting to wonder if this has something to do with Rob Miller. He did threaten me when he was taken into custody after the trial."

"Yeah, true."

"I don't really want the NYPD involved with this."

The door opened and Noah came in after he waved to his friend's mother.

"Hi everyone."

"Hi Sweetie."

"Hey, Noah."

"Is your homework done?"

"Yes."

"Ok. Jesse is in the other room watching a movie."

"Ok. Mom, are you ok?"

"Not really."

Olivia tried explaining things to Noah the best she could.

"So, that guy was my uncle?"

"Yes."

"Wow! I didn't even know I had an uncle."

"He's been in trouble before but seemed to have gotten his life back on track."

"Until now?"

"Right."

"I'm sorry."

"Thank you."

Noah hugged Olivia and then Hank came out of the kitchen to tell Amanda and Kat that their food was ready.

"Hi Dad."

"Hey, kiddo."

Amanda handed Billie to Olivia and then she and Kat went into the kitchen to eat, while Noah went to join Jesse in the other room. Fin and Carisi had arrived after a while and they were hungry as well, so Hank warmed something up for them. After they ate, Olivia's phone rang, so she answered it and went upstairs to have some privacy. It was Tracy telling her that she didn't want to be bothered with making any arrangements for Simon and Olivia told her that it was fine but she thought his daughter might like to know but that of course was her decision. She hung up and went back downstairs.

"So?"

"That was Tracy. She doesn't want to be bothered with making any arrangements, which is what I figured. I said I thought Olivia might eventually want to know but that was her decision. As usual, it's my problem. I'm always the one that has to clean up Simon's messes."

"Liv, we'll help you. Just tell us what you want us to do."

"Believe me, I can completely relate to what you're going through. Kim always gets herself into trouble when she's in New York and I have to fix it, which nearly costs me my job every damn time. I'm tired of it. I just want to focus on my life with my girls and my job. That's it."

"All I know is, I need a vacation."

"We can arrange something. Olive already invited us for Thanksgiving. Maybe we can do that and then if Erin can stay with Noah, we can go somewhere for a few days."

"I'm good with that as long as someone can back me up because I never know when I'm going to have to work late."

"Lucy usually asks for time off around Thanksgiving and Christmas."

"I'm not goin' anywhere, so if you need someone, call me. You know me, the less I have to do with my family, the better off I am."

"Thanks, Ed."

"No problem."

"Liv, you're off the rest of the week, right?"

"Yeah. I would like to spend some time with my boys and maybe I can go over to Simon's tomorrow and go through stuff to see if he has any arrangements made and then I won't have to do anything."

"I'll go with you."

"Ok. Deal. The 3 of you will be fine on your own?"

"We'll be fine, Liv."

"We should probably go. I need to get the girls to bed."

"Noah needs to get to bed too."

Amanda went to get Jesse and then after they hugged Olivia, Hank and Noah, they left to head home. Fin, Carisi and Kat left and then Ed and Melinda did too. Erin stuck around and tucked Noah in before she left and then Hank and Olivia went to bed. The next day, after they got Noah off to school, Hank and Olivia went over to Simon's and looked through stuff, while Erin started looking into whether or not Rob Miller could be responsible for Simon's death after she had gone to see Melinda about getting the results she already had.

As always, reviews and suggestions are appreciated.
