A Home for Christmas

Olivia's job was never easy, especially when the victim was a child. What had made this case even harder, was that the victim was two years younger than Noah. Kelsey had been molested, sexually assaulted and beaten by both of her parents. Olivia and Amanda had gone to meet with her at the hospital and as mothers, they were both having a hard time dealing with it. The parents were both in custody and they were trying to locate other family members but no one was really interested in taking her. The last thing Olivia wanted to do was to put Kelsey in State custody, especially at Christmastime. All she knew was that it was going to be a long road for Kelsey.

When Olivia arrived home after working on the case, she took her coat and boots off and went into the family room. Hank was watching a Christmas movie and Noah was asleep on Hank's lap.

"Hey."

"Hey."

Olivia walked over to Hank and kissed him. She picked up Noah and carried him up to his bedroom, while Hank fixed her something to eat. After Olivia took her gun and badge off, she came back downstairs.

"You ok?"

"I don't know. That entire situation is just sad. I really don't want to put her in State custody, especially right now."

"Noah and I were talking about what had happened because he had overheard us talking and I was trying to explain things to him. He asked if maybe she could come live with us."

"I'm not completely against that suggestion."

"We've talked about wanting to adopt again, so Noah isn't an only child."

"Yeah, we have. I have to go see Judge Linden tomorrow anyway, so maybe I'll call Trevor and meet with him first. The least we can do is let her stay with us for Christmas. No child should have to be going through what she is going through but most of all, not at Christmas."

"Noah and I are behind you whatever you decide."

"It's not too late, so let me make a call to Trevor now."

Olivia pulled out her phone and called Trevor. After they were done talking, she hung up.

"He will meet us at my office tomorrow and have Judge Linden meet us there as well."

"Ok. She is going to need someone that can get her through the hell she has been through and that might as well be you. I'm up for it if you are."

"Thank you. I had considered it but then I wasn't sure that you or Noah would be up for it. I love you both so much."

"We love you too."

Olivia finished eating and then she and Hank finished watching the movie. Once the movie was over, they went to get ready for bed and fell asleep.

The next morning, they all got up and got ready. Both Hank and Olivia told Noah that they were going to see if Kelsey could come live with them at least temporarily and he was excited about it. After breakfast, they headed to the Precinct and went up. Everyone was already there.

"Hank, Noah and I want to take Kelsey at least temporarily if we can. I called Trevor last night and he was going to contact Judge Linden to meet us here."

"None of the other family wanted her?"

"Nope."

"That sucks. Poor kid. The good news is that the father was shanked last night."

"That is good news."

Trevor arrived and walked into the Squadroom.

"Olivia."

"Hey."

"Hank and Noah, it's good to see you both."

"You too."

"Did you get a hold of Judge Linden?"

"Yes. She will be here in about 10 minutes."

"Ok. Great. Fin told me that the father was shanked in jail last night."

They went into Olivia's office and Trevor made a note about the father now being deceased. About 10 minutes later, Judge Linden arrived and went into Olivia's office.

"Morning, Ma'am."

"Good morning, everyone."

"Thank you for meeting with us."

"Oh, no problem at all. I understand Kelsey's father was killed in jail."

"Yes. Please, have a seat."

Olivia got up and let Judge Linden sit at her desk, while everyone else sat in chairs and Noah sat on the sofa behind them.

"We just want her to have a happy Christmas. She didn't deserve any of this. None of the other relatives want her and the last thing I want is to have her put into State custody."

"She definitely won't ever be put back in the mother's custody. She does already have a Case Worker and I do want to meet with Kelsey myself to see if if's ok with her. I don't see where there would be a problem for you to have her in your home for Christmas or even longer for that matter. If she's ok with this, you can foster her for a year and then adopt her after the year is up if no one decides they want her in the meantime. As soon as I meet with her, I will call you."

"Ok, great. Thank you so much."

"No problem. You will hear from me before the end of the day."

"Ok."

Judge Linden left and headed to the hospital to meet with Kelsey. Hank and Noah kissed Olivia and went home. Olivia told Hank that as soon as she heard from Judge Linden, she would call him and then they would go to the hospital, so he and Noah could meet Kelsey.

Once Judge Linden got back from the hospital, she called Olivia and said Kelsey was ok with staying with them. She had already contacted the Case Worker to start the paperwork. Olivia called Hank and then he and Noah met Olivia for lunch to head to the hospital.

"Hey."

"Hey.

Hank drove to the hospital and then they went inside. They went up to Kelsey's room.

"Hi Sweetie."

"Hi Olivia."

"Kelsey, this is my husband Hank and our son Noah. Noah is two years older than you. Hank and Noah, this is Kelsey."

"It's nice to meet you, Kelsey."

"You too."

"Do you want to come live with us for now?"

"Yes."

Kelsey sat up in the bed and then Olivia wrapped her arms around her. Then Hank sat down on the bed and Kelsey wrapped her arms around of him. He then gently rubbed her back. She seemed tense at first but then she seemed a lot more relaxed in his arms. The Case Worker came in and then they all talked for a few minutes. Olivia told Hank they needed a few things, so she stayed with Kelsey, while he took Noah shopping. Hank ended up going a little crazy at the store. He bought so many things for Kelsey for Christmas and he bought clothes, bedding and stuffed animals. He bought everything he could think of. Noah had gone to the Christmas section of the store and made sure she had her own stocking.

"Daddy, we need this too."

"Ok."

Hank paid for everything and they took it home. He took the Christmas presents into his and Olivia's bedroom, so they could wrap it later and left the bedding by the washing machine to wash when they got back. Noah had taken the stocking into his room and found the glitter paint. He wrote her name on her stocking and left it on his desk to dry. They left for the hospital and by the time they got there, she was ready to be released. They stopped back at the Precinct, so Olivia could get her stuff. Olivia was off for a week. They invited everyone to come over for dinner on Christmas Day. Amanda said she and the girls would definitely come by. They left the Precinct and headed home. By the time got home, Kelsey was asleep. Hank got her out of her seat and had planned to put her on the sofa until they could get her room ready for her but Lucy was there and had already washed her bedding and the clothes Hank left by the washing machine and made her bed.

"Lucy, thank you so much."

"No problem."

Hank took Kelsey upstairs and put her in her own bed. Olivia had gone upstairs, went into the bedroom and saw what Hank had gotten.

"You are such a sweetie. You're already spoiling her."

"I couldn't help myself. She deserves this."

Olivia wrapped her arms around Hank and kissed him.

"Thank you so much for doing this."

"You're welcome. I noticed that she tensed up when I first put my arms around her but then she seemed a little more relaxed. I know she's been through a lot and that son of a bitch was probably the one that did most of it to her."

"His DNA showed up in her rape kit, so he did enough to her. I deal with this for a living and I still can't understand why anyone would do that to a child. She has to live with this her entire life. When you and Noah were gone, she asked me why this happened to her. I couldn't answer her without crying. She really has a long road ahead of her and I just hope we can be there for it all. Her Case Worker seems a little nicer than Noah's was and the fact that only one of us is working, helps."

"I told you that I wanted to be a full-time dad to Noah and now I want to be a full-time dad to Kelsey too. I will do everything I can to make sure she becomes a part of this family in a year."

"I will too."

Noah joined them.

"Noah, thank you so much for being so supportive of all this."

"You're welcome. Here's her stocking."

"Sweetie, thank you. I love you."

"I love you too."

"He made sure we bought a stocking for her and he put her name on it when we got back."

"You're such a good big brother to her already. She needs us all right now."

"I know. I don't want anyone to hurt her again."

"That makes two of us."

"I feel the same way."

"Why did this happen to her?"

"Because some people are just sick. This is what I deal with every day when I go to work and it breaks my heart that all this had to happen to her. It breaks my heart when it happens to anyone but it's hard to deal with when it's a child. If something like this ever happens to you or even if you suspect one of your friends may be a victim of any type of violence, I want you to tell one of us, ok?"

"Ok."

"When the victim is a child, the person that hurts them will tell them not to say anything to their parents or the police or they will get hurt again. Do not listen to them!"

"Ok."

"I just want you to know what can happen."

"I understand and I will try to remember what you told me."

"Ok. Even if you just have a question about something, you can come to us about anything. Sexual assault or any other type of violence can be difficult to talk about."

"Got it!"

Noah hugged Hank and Olivia and then he went back to his room. Hank went to figure out what to fix for dinner. After dinner, they watched a movie and then they got the kids ready for bed. Olivia nearly broke down when she saw all the bruises on Kelsey's body. She even saw some cigarette burns, which brought back a lot of bad memories for her with had happened with William Lewis. Hank brought Noah in and Noah had Eddie and one of his Christmas books with him.

"Do you want me to read to you?"

"Ok but I can sort of read."

"Why don't we read it together?"

"Ok."

Noah got into Kelsey's bed and they started reading the book together, while Hank and Olivia listened. Noah was even helping her with the words she didn't know. It brought tears to Olivia's eyes seeing how well Noah and Kelsey were getting along in such a short time. Both kids had fallen asleep before they were done reading the book. Hank and Olivia covered them kissed them both and went to get ready for bed.

"I just want her to be ok."

"It's gonna take a while but she has all of us to help her through it. Noah is already proving that he's a great big brother to her."

"Yes, he certainly is."

Hank and Olivia kissed each other before they fell asleep in each other's arms. They spent the weekend letting Kelsey get used to things and Amanda brought Jesse and Billie over to play. Kelsey and Jesse became fast friends. Everyone else, including Erin, had also come over, so she could get to know them as well. Olive and Daniel were coming in for Christmas and she and Daniel seemed to hit it off right away as well.

Hank and Olivia had tried to make Christmas for Kelsey as happy as they possibly could, considering the circumstances. She had dropped something on the floor and ran and hid because she was afraid of what would happen because of it. Both Hank and Olivia tried to reassure her that it was only an accident and it wasn't a big deal. It could be cleaned up. They both knew she had been beaten when something similar had happened to her before. They knew they were going to have their work cut out for them but they were already falling in love with her and really hoped they would eventually be able to officially make her a part of the family.
