A/N: This idea just popped into my head. For this one, Hank and Olivia have never met before, so the crossovers never occurred. There will more than likely be another related chapter. I don't own any of the characters.
The Cruise
Olivia has always worked a lot and it has been years since she has gone anywhere. The last time she and Noah had gone anywhere was when Ed had taken them to Paris 3½ years ago. Her squad had suggested that she and Noah go somewhere for Spring Break. She thought that maybe Noah would like to go on a Disney cruise, so she made the arrangements for that.
Hank was never one to go anywhere either but after Olive and Daniel moved to Scottsdale, he spent quite a bit of time going to Arizona to visit them. He had decided to take Olive and Daniel on a trip and he had chosen a Disney cruise. Daniel was going to be 4 this year, so Hank thought he might like it.
They had gotten on their respective flights from New York, Chicago and Phoenix and flew to Miami. When each flight arrived, they went to get their luggage and took the same shuttle to the ship.
"Mom, that looks awesome!"
"It certainly does."
"Mommy, Papa, look!"
"That's pretty big, isn't it?"
"Uh huh!"
"How old is he?"
"Daniel will be 4 in May. How about yours?"
"Noah is 7. I'm Olivia Benson, by the way."
"It's nice to meet you, Olivia. I'm Olive Voight and this is my father-in-law, Hank."
"It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
They boarded the ship and found out where their cabins were. A little while later, the ship left the dock. Once they had gotten settled in and changed into their swimsuits, Olivia and Noah decided to take a walk on deck just to see what they had. Noah was the most excited about the slides. They had run into Hank, Olive and Daniel.
"All settled in?"
"Yeah. You?"
"Us too."
"Mom, I want to go on the slide."
"Ok, Sweetie. Calm down."
"Daniel wants to go too."
"You go ahead and I'll watch from the pool."
"Ok, Papa."
They found a spot to put their stuff down. Olivia took Noah and Olive took Daniel headed into the water to head up to the top of the slide after she put his swim vest on him, while Hank went into the pool to watch.
"I can do this by myself right?"
"Yes. I'll do it once, so you can't say I don't do anything with you. This entire vacation is so we can spend some time together."
"You work too much."
"I know I do."
They got up to the top and Noah was becoming even more excited. Noah started down and then Olivia headed down. Olive sat down and held on tight to Daniel before they headed down. Daniel yelled for Hank to make sure he was watching them. As soon as Noah hit the water he immediately headed back up to the top of the slide. Olivia hit the water and went over to sit on the edge of the pool as she watched Noah. As soon as Olive and Daniel hit the water, she took him over to the kiddie pool.
"Your son is a ball of energy."
"Yes, he sure is."
"I can see Daniel being like that at some point. What activities does your son like to do?"
"We tried the baseball thing but that didn't last very long. He recently decided he likes dancing, so I put him in a dance class. He is actually pretty good. He had a role in the Nutcracker."
"That's pretty impressive for that age."
"Especially since it was with Middle School age kids."
"That's great. His dad must be pretty proud of him."
"Actually, he doesn't have a dad. I adopted him on my own when he was about a year and a half. I've actually never been married."
"I was married for over 20 years but she died from cancer. Justin, my only son was killed not quite 3 years ago."
"Military?"
"He was in the Army but he had been helping out a friend and got killed. Daniel was just a year old when he lost his dad. He's my only connection to my son."
"Noah's parents were not the best people. He was the result of rape and his mother was also an addict. His father was a sex trafficker."
"They told you this?"
"No. I knew it before I adopted him. I work for the NYPD, more specifically the Special Victims Unit and I arrested both of his parents. His mother for prostitution and his father for sex trafficking. We found out that she was Noah's mother and I told her that if she wanted him back, then she had to get herself cleaned up. She tried but then she was gang raped and burned when she left the safe house she was staying in to get a fix. We found out who his father was after he was arrested and the DNA matched. He was killed in a shootout with one of my detectives at the Courthouse. He was trying to stop me from adopting him."
"What's your rank?"
"I was promoted to Captain 6 months ago."
"I'm a Sergeant with the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department. Wait a minute, are you the cop that was held hostage by that William Lewis guy?"
"Yes, that's me."
"That son of a bitch got what he deserved."
"He still plays with my head sometimes but that's what he planned to do. I've been told that the reason I fought so hard to stay alive through all that was because of my son and he hadn't even come into my life yet."
"I've done a lot that I'm not proud of. Sometimes I let my temper get the best of me."
"I think we all have done a lot that we aren't proud of."
"I killed the guy that killed my son. My best friend took the blame for it and got sent to prison, where he was stabbed to death. Every day since Al died, I have blamed myself. If I had come clean and admitted what I had done, Al would still be alive right now. I have gotten more chances than I deserve."
"Sometimes I think I have too. I wish I had killed William Lewis and I'm not sorry I feel that way. If someone killed my son, I'd want them dead too. Prison would be too good for them."
Olivia and Hank kept talking and Noah ended up doing the slide several more times. Olivia and Noah swam for a little while longer and then Hank went to find Olive and Daniel by the kiddie pool. They went back to their respective cabins and Daniel took a nap. Noah ended up falling asleep for a little while as well. A few hours later, they changed for dinner and it turned out they were all at the same table. Hank pulled the chair out for Olive and did the same for Olivia.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Do you like my mom?"
"Noah!"
"What? I want to know. Well, do you?"
"We just met."
"Mom, do you like him?"
"Like he said, we just met."
They got their food and everyone ate. Some of the Disney characters visited and both boys went to meet them. After dinner, Noah wanted to go swimming again, so they went back to the cabin to change. Olive took Daniel back to their cabin and got him ready for bed. Hank went to Olive's cabin to read Daniel his story and then he decided to go to the pool as well but he had no idea that Olivia and Noah were going to be there.
"He really likes that slide, doesn't he?"
"He sure does. I apologize for him."
"Don't worry about it. He's a kid."
"I'm not that great in relationships. Things start to get too serious and sometimes I panic. One of my exes and I wanted different things as far as marriage and family. I obviously wanted that but he didn't. A part of me still cares about him but I never saw him as marriage material. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I dated the last guy I was with because he was with IAB at one point. I have a habit of not disclosing my relationships and then people find out about them because of some investigation. I need to quit dating people I work with. The last ADA we had, I think I was starting to have feelings for. We didn't start out on the right foot. He came to New York from Chicago. He came for his dad's funeral and then ended up taking the ADA position."
"I know Peter."
"You do?"
"Yeah."
"He was coaching Noah with baseball and I was starting to enjoy being in his company. The last case he worked on with us, he basically set the guy up and then told me that he let his feelings for me get in the way of him doing his job. He walked off and I never saw or heard from him again. Sometimes I think that's why Noah lost interest in baseball because I think he had become too attached to Peter. He's happy with the dancing though."
"Whatever makes him happy is all that matters, right?"
"Exactly. Is your grandson into a lot?"
"She has him in a swimming class."
"Do they live near you?"
"I wish they did. They moved to Scottsdale, Arizona after Justin died. We see each other as often as we can. Her sister is out there. They come to see me in the warmer weather and I go to see them in the colder weather. I did the cruise for them for Christmas."
"I did the same for Noah. Sometimes I work way too much and I feel like I'm neglecting him. You know how that goes."
"Yeah, I do. My relationship with Justin really suffered after my wife died. The Army and becoming a father shaped him up and made him grow up. I didn't always show it but I was proud of him."
"How long has she been gone?"
"10 years. She had ovarian cancer."
"I'm sorry."
"Thanks."
"I think I'm going do the slide again. You interested?"
"I might as well."
They headed over and went up the slide. Noah had just come down and he saw them heading up. He had a feeling that Hank did like Olivia and she liked him too. Noah headed up again.
"Mom!"
"Hey, Sweetie."
"This is so fun."
"I'm glad you're having a good time but you are going to have to do something besides the slide."
"Yeah, I know. Hank, where do you live?"
"Chicago."
"Chicago. That's where Peter is from."
"Hank knows Peter."
"Cool. Did he go back there?"
"That I don't know."
They all went down and then they swam some more before they went back to their respective cabins. Noah got ready for bed and then Olivia tucked him in. She kissed him goodnight and then she went to take a shower before she went to bed herself. Hank seemed to be in her thoughts as she tried settling for the night. In Hank's cabin, he had taken a shower before getting ready for bed as well. He thought about the question that Noah had asked him earlier. He did like Olivia and he hadn't felt that way about a woman since Camille.
The next morning, they all met for breakfast and spent time together. Noah and Daniel were getting along really well and Noah really liked Hank too. When they arrived at the first stop, they spent the day together and had a lot of fun. Noah had a few minutes with Olive when both Hank and Olivia had both gone to the restroom.
"Olive, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you think my mom and Hank like each other?"
"You know what, I think they do. Do you like Hank?"
"Yeah. He seems nice."
"He's a good guy. He's a little rough around the edges sometimes but he has such a big heart and he spends as much time as he can with Daniel."
"I just want my mom to be happy. It's been a long time."
"Has she ever had a boyfriend that you know of?"
"Yeah. He was ok. He took us to Paris but I really couldn't see him taking us on a cruise and I never really thought of him as someone that could end up being my dad someday. I'm not even sure how she really felt about him. She doesn't really talk about that. She seems different these last few days."
"Different how?"
"It's kind of hard to explain. She seems distracted lately but in a good way. She always seems distracted by her job and that isn't good."
"I didn't know Hank's late wife but I can't say that I have ever seen him like this before. He seems to be pretty distracted lately too."
Olivia came back.
"Hey, Mom."
"Hey, Sweetie. Olive, thank you for keeping him company."
"No problem. He's a good kid."
"He sure is."
Then Hank came back.
"We ready?"
"Yeah."
They all headed back to the ship and then they all basically fell asleep as soon as they got to their cabins. During the remainder of their cruise, Olive would offer to take Noah to the pool with her and Daniel, so Hank and Olivia could spend some time together without actually knowing that Olive and Noah wanted them to spend time alone.
By the time they arrived back in Miami, they got off the ship and took the shuttle to the airport. Olivia had given both Hank and Olive her cell number and both of them had given her theirs as well, so they could keep in touch. They went through security and then said their goodbyes.
"It was so nice meeting all of you."
"It was nice meeting you and Noah too. Maybe Daniel and I will have to make plans to come to New York. I've never been there."
"Noah and I may have to come to Scottsdale sometime but I doubt it would be when it's hot."
"That is completely understandable."
"Have you ever been to Chicago?"
"I was there briefly years ago for a case we were working on and I was checking on the rape kit but I never really spent time checking out the city."
"You should come for a visit. I could give you a tour of the city if you wanted."
"That sounds like a plan. You should come to New York sometime too."
"I will do that."
Noah hugged Hank, Olive and Daniel and so did Olivia. The hug between Hank and Olivia lasted quite a while. Olive and Noah looked at each other and smiled. Everyone parted ways and headed to their respective gates to wait for their flights home.
By the time Olivia and Noah arrived in New York, it was dinner time. They grabbed a pizza on the way home and ate before Noah got ready for bed. Once Noah was in bed, Olivia unpacked and put pretty much everything in the dirty clothes. She got ready for bed and went to see if there was anything on TV. She started looking through her phone at the pictures she had taken. She realized that there were quite a few with Hank. It had been an enjoyable week and she enjoyed getting to know Hank, Olive and Daniel. She finished looking through the pictures and then decided to go to bed. It was back to work for her and back to school for Noah in the morning. In Chicago, Hank had just finished looking through his pictures. Olivia was definitely beautiful. He had wanted to ask her out but would it really work between them?
The next morning, Olivia had gotten up and made sure Noah was up before she went to take a shower. They had breakfast and she got Noah's lunch together before dropping him off at school. Then she headed to the Precinct.
"Morning, Captain."
"Good morning."
"You looked tanned and relaxed."
"This last week was absolutely amazing."
"So, who is he?"
"Who's who?"
"The guy. Come on, Liv. I haven't seen you like this in a long time and that included when you were with Tucker."
"His name is Hank Voight and he's a Sergeant with the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department. He was there with his daughter-in-law and grandson. We spent the entire cruise together and enjoyed each other's company."
"Are you involved?"
"I'm not exactly sure what it is at this point but he invited us to come to Chicago and I told him he should come here sometime. I also invited his daughter-in-law and grandson to come here and Olive told us we should come visit her and Daniel in Scottsdale."
"You gonna do either?"
"I'm thinking about it. I'd like to see Hank again and Daniel is such a sweet little boy."
"How old is he?"
"He's not quite 4. He and Noah got along really well."
Olivia pulled out her phone and showed Fin and Amanda the pictures.
"Looks like you had fun."
"I did."
"Did you miss us?"
"Not really."
"Thanks a lot."
Olivia started laughing.
"Yes, I missed you guys. Was everything ok here?"
"Fine. Kat and Rollins both behaved themselves."
"Shut up, Fin!"
Olivia shook her head and went into her office. Compared to the last week that seemed to fly by, the day dragged on forever even though they had a case to work on. She also looked to see what else she could find out about Hank. He had told her everything there was to know about him. He had been on her mind almost all day. Olivia left early to get Noah at school and take him to his dance class before they had dinner. It had been a slow day for Hank and Intelligence as well. He looked to see what he could find out about Olivia but everything she had told him was what came up. He couldn't stop thinking about her if he tried. He was seriously considering scheduling a trip to New York just so he could see her again.
