A/N: Here is another Valentine's Day related one shot. I don't own any of the characters.
Secret Admirer
Hank was coming to New York to visit Erin for the weekend but the main reason he wanted to go to New York was because he wanted to see Olivia. He had arrived the day before Valentine's Day but Erin of course had to work. He ordered a dozen roses and wanted to have them delivered to Olivia at the precinct. When they were delivered to the Precinct, everyone was there.
"Can we help you?"
"I have a delivery for Olivia Benson."
"Hey, Liv."
"Yeah, Fin."
"Delivery for you."
Olivia accepted the delivery and then the delivery guy left. She opened the box.
"Oh, my."
She looked at the card.
"Who's it from?"
"It doesn't say. All it says is that they will pick me up at my place at 6:30 tomorrow."
"Do you want us to look into it?"
"No."
"You sure? It's not like you to go out on dates with someone you don't know."
"Yeah, I'm sure. I need to get home to Noah."
Olivia went to get her stuff and then she headed home. As soon as she arrived at home, she got the mail and went up to her apartment.
"Hello."
"Hey, Liv."
"Hi Mom."
"Hey, Sweetie."
Olivia took the roses into the kitchen and put them in a vase.
"Those are gorgeous."
"Thanks."
"Who are they from?"
"It doesn't say."
"Oh, a secret admirer!"
"They are picking me up here at 6:30 tomorrow for dinner. Can you stay with Noah?"
"Of course. Any idea as to who this is?"
"I think I have an idea but it's been 4 years since we have seen each other."
"So, who do you think it is?"
"Hank Voight."
"The guy from Chicago?"
"Yeah. We had a falling out the last time we saw each other and we haven't spoken since. I contacted him when his son died but he never replied. I've been wanting to contact him but I couldn't bring myself to doing it. I kind of hope it is him."
"Maybe it's an old boyfriend."
"Honestly, Brian never would have been this thoughtful."
"I'll see you both tomorrow."
"Thanks, Lucy."
"No problem. Bye, Noah."
"Bye."
Lucy got her coat and then she left.
"Did you have dinner yet?"
"No. Can we have pizza?"
"Sure. Did you do your Valentine's for your classmates?"
"Yes."
"Good. Did you get your homework done?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Olivia called to order the pizza and then they watched TV while they waited for it. Once it arrived, they ate. A few hours later, Noah went to bed and Olivia got ready for bed herself. She looked through her closet to see what she planned to wear to dinner tomorrow night. She really had no idea where they were planning to go.
The next morning, Olivia got up and got ready for work. She then made sure Noah was up and fixed breakfast. She took him to school and headed to the Precinct for the day. The day went by quickly. Olivia left a little early, so she could get ready. She heard a knock at the door and Noah yell that he would get it. He opened the door.
"Hi."
"Hey. You must be Noah."
"That's right. Are you the guy from Chicago?"
"Yeah. I'm Hank."
"Hi Hank. I'm Lucy Huston, Noah's nanny."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too. Noah, go check on your mom."
"Ok."
Noah ran to Olivia's bedroom to check on her.
"He's here, Mom."
"Ok. I'll be right there. Is it Hank?"
"Yes. You look pretty but I always think you do."
"Thank you."
Noah ran out of Olivia's bedroom.
"She'll be right out."
"Thank you."
Once Olivia was ready, she came out of the bedroom.
"Well, this certainly is a surprise. I didn't expect to ever see or hear from you again."
"I know and I am sorry for what I said."
"How did you know that I didn't already have a date for tonight?"
"Well, I do talk to Erin, so I knew you weren't currently seeing someone. She also told me about what happened to Tucker. I'm sorry to hear about that."
"Thank you."
"Don't stay out too late."
"Noah!"
Noah giggled as Olivia put her coat on and then they left after she kissed him. Hank drove to the restaurant and then they were taken to their table. They looked at the menus and ordered. Then their server brought their drinks.
"What do you want, Hank?"
"I apologized. What more do you want?"
"You were the one that acted like an ass when I told you I was dating Ed. It's not like anything ever happened between us, so there was really no reason for you to be jealous about it if we were friends. I reached out to you when you lost your son and you ignored me. For 4 years and now all of a sudden you want to be in my life again?"
"The one thing I never got to tell you that night was that I was starting to have feelings for you. I acted like that because I was jealous. I wanted to be with you and I was trying to get enough guts to tell you. I'm normally not afraid of anything but I don't like having my heart broken. It was broken into a million little pieces when Camille died and I didn't have the best relationship with Justin for the longest time. A part of me thinks I never deserved Camille but she made me a better person. I wasn't always like this. Camille's death played a big part in why I'm the way I am. When I met you and you threatened to arrest me, I started wanting to be a better person because I wanted you to like me. I have a problem communicating sometimes."
"Yeah, no kidding. Hank, I do like you. I always have. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have feelings for you too because I do. I think I was afraid of starting something with you because of the distance and what happened with Ed just sort of happened. I know what you went through after Justin died, what happened with that Woods guy and what happened with Olinsky. I talk to Erin too. She almost went back to Chicago and wanted to take the blame for everything. That's how much she loves you."
"I know she did. I told her not to. I blame myself for Olinsky's death. I just feel like I let him down when all he was doing was protecting me. I never asked him to do this. If you don't want to stay, I'll understand."
"I'm not going anywhere. I kind of had a feeling you were my secret admirer. You could have just called me and asked me to go out for dinner."
"This was kind of a stupid thing to do."
"No, it wasn't. I think it's kind of cute. Thank you for asking me to be your Valentine and for the roses."
"You're welcome. It's been a while since I had a date for Valentine's Day, let alone bought a woman a gift for Valentine's Day."
"It's been a while for me too. Ed and I broke up just before Valentine's Day and really the only thing he did that was romantic was taking me and Noah to Paris. That's the best memory of my relationship with him. We hadn't seen each other since the breakup. He was talking about retiring then but he didn't retire until now and he never got to enjoy his retirement. He only had 6 months to a year."
"I hate when they give you an approximate time. They did that with Camille too."
"How close were they with her?"
"They said 18 months to 2 years and it was a little over a year. What type did he have?"
"Brain."
"Damn!"
"He said they found it in his lungs right around the time he and I got together. It was 9/11 related."
"In a way, I can see why he did what he did."
"Yeah, I guess. It's just hard losing someone I cared about. On top of that, a few months ago, I lost my brother. Well, half-brother."
"It is hard losing someone you care for. It's happened to me too. My wife, my son, Al, Al's daughter Lexi. Were you and your brother close?"
"Not really but I kind of feel guilty that I pretty much told him off in a voicemail message before I was told he was gone."
"How'd he die?"
"A bad batch of heroin."
"Fentanyl?"
"Yep."
"We had a case like that not too long ago."
Their salads arrived and then not too long after that, their food came out.
"Where are you staying?"
"With Erin."
"Does she know we're out tonight?"
"Oh, yeah and she approves. She thinks you'd be good for me."
"She does, huh?"
"That's what she says. I hear you're a Captain now."
"Yes, I am."
"That's good. I'm still a Sergeant. I was offered a meritorious promotion to Lieutenant around the time Justin died but I turned it down. They only did it to keep me off the streets."
"I'm not out as much as I used to be and I do miss it."
"You deserve to be a Captain."
"Thank you. How is everyone?"
"Ok. Antonio became addicted to his pain meds and I put him in rehab once. He was ok for a while and then relapsed. He did rehab and then he joined his sister in Puerto Rico, so now Halstead is my #2."
"You're trusting him enough to leave him in charge. That's encouraging."
"He has seniority over everyone else but sometimes I still don't trust him."
"I finally got Fin to take the Sergeant's exam and he passed, so he's officially my #2. He doesn't like it but he deserved the promotion."
"Good. I'm glad to hear it. Listen if you don't want to stick around, I get it. I just didn't think you'd want to see me any other way."
"Hank, I'm fine with this. I think we needed this. We're just having dinner."
"I'm probably not good enough to be in a relationship with you anyway."
"Says who?"
"You haven't exactly indicated that you'd ever want anything more with me. Whatever. I get it."
"You get what? I haven't said anything. Do you want to get in a relationship with me?"
"I don't even know what I want or why I even bothered coming here in the first place."
"Yet you still came here and asked me out to dinner, you weren't this nervous when we went out for drinks after that first case."
"Yeah, I know."
They got dessert and then Hank paid the bill. They left and Hank took Olivia home.
"Do you want to come up?"
"Do you want me to?"
"Yes, I do."
Hank and Olivia got out of the car and they went inside. They went up to her apartment and she pulled her key out. She turned around, grabbed Hank by his coat and kissed him.
"Does that answer your question?"
"About what?"
"About wanting more with you. I do want more. Do you want more?"
"I wouldn't have done this if I didn't."
They kissed again and then Olivia opened the door.
"Hello."
"Hey."
"How was he?"
"Fine as always. He's in his room but not asleep as far as I know."
"Ok. Thank you for staying with him."
"Oh, no problem. Any time."
Lucy put her boots and coat on.
"Enjoy the rest your weekend and let me know if you need me."
"I will."
Lucy left and headed home. Hank took his coat off and sat down, while Olivia went to check on Noah.
"I'm back."
"Good. How was your dinner?"
"It was nice."
"Are you and Hank going to date?"
"I'd like to."
"I'm ok with it. You haven't dated anyone since Tucker."
"Thank you for pointing that out."
"I'm just saying."
"If Hank and I do start dating, we could be going to Chicago quite a bit."
"I'm ok with that. Isn't Peter from Chicago?"
"Yes, he is."
"I like Hank, Mom. He seems nice. You deserve to be happy and you've been really sad for a while. You were sad after Uncle Simon died but really sad after Tucker died. That was hard on me too. Maybe Hank can make you smile again."
"You're growing up too fast. It's time for bed."
"Ok."
Noah got under the covers and then Olivia kissed him goodnight. She shut his door and went to join Hank on the sofa.
"Well, my son likes you and if we started seeing each other, he'd be ok with going to Chicago. You know Peter Stone, right?"
"Oh, yeah."
"He was working with Noah on his baseball skills for a while. He left after he admitted to me that he allowed his feelings for me interfere with him doing his job."
"So, then I'm not the only one?"
"Obviously. I haven't seen or heard from him since then."
"Is Noah still playing baseball?"
"No. He decided he wanted to dance. He is actually quite good and he got a part in the Nutcracker."
"That's great. You need to let him do whatever makes him happy."
"That is true. Hank."
"Yeah."
"Do you want to stay?"
"Yeah, I want to but I don't think I should. If we're going to do this, then we need to do it right. The time should be right but right now, we need to make sure we're both ready to go to that next step. I don't want to just jump right into it. I've only been in one serious relationship and that was with my wife. We have a lot more at stake in this relationship because of the distance and because of Noah."
"I understand. I guess we need to make arrangements to spend as much time together as we can even with our schedules if we really want to make this work. I can't make a relationship work with someone in the same city."
"We'll figure it out, even if we try to arrange something once a month. Maybe when Noah is off for Spring Break, the two of you can come to Chicago. Olive is bringing Daniel in then."
"I'll talk to Noah about it and see what he says."
"Ok. I should probably get going."
"Will I see you before you go home?"
"I'm sure something can be arranged. I'll call you tomorrow."
"Ok. Thanks for dinner."
"You're welcome."
Hank got up and put his coat on. He kissed Olivia and then he left to head back to Erin's. She was watching a movie when he got there.
"Hey."
"Hey. How was dinner?"
"It was nice."
"I'm surprised to see you here though."
"She wanted me to stay and it's not like I didn't want to but I want us to be sure we're both ready to go to the next step. I want us to do this right. We are going to try to be in a long distance relationship and I invited them to come to Chicago when Noah is on his Spring Break. That is when Olive is coming in with Daniel. She said she will talk to Noah about it and let me know."
"Are you going to see her before you go home?"
"I told her something could be arranged and I would call her tomorrow."
"Just make sure you do. I'm glad you two are going to try to make it work."
"We'll see what happens."
"Try not to screw this up."
"I won't. She's worth it and Noah is a good kid. I really don't want to be alone for the rest of my life. I just hope Olivia and I can make this work."
"I hope you can too. Maybe you need to make some decisions concerning your future if you really want this to work out."
"I've thought about wanting to retire quite a bit since Olinsky died but I just don't want to rush this relationship with Olivia."
"I get it but maybe you need to make the first move. Move here and offer to spend time with Noah. That may show her how serious you are about her son."
"I am serious about her son. I know they are a package deal and I am perfectly fine with that. How was your night?"
"Quiet. Who takes over the squad if you retire?"
"Halstead."
"That's scary. There was a time when you didn't trust him."
"He's got seniority. I told Olivia we could try seeing each other once a month and see how that goes. When I was off yesterday and today, Jay's been in charge. I haven't heard from him at all, so things must be fine."
"They are all pretty capable of handling stuff."
"Yeah, they are. I should get to bed."
"Ok. Night."
"Night, kiddo."
"Love you."
"I love you too."
Hank kissed Erin on the head and then he went to get ready for bed. He got into bed and went to sleep. As promised, the next day he called Olivia and the 4 of them spent some time together. On Sunday before Hank left for the airport, Olivia and Noah came over to Erin's to say goodbye to Hank and that they would see him when they came to Chicago for Noah's Spring Break. After Hank kissed Olivia and Erin, he left for the airport. After he got checked in and went to the gate to wait for his flight, he thought about how the weekend had gone. He had hoped this would become the norm for him and he would be spending many weekends flying back and forth between Chicago and New York. After all, Olivia was worth it and he would give anything to make it work between them.
Reviews and suggestions are appreciated.
