Getting Caught

Hank and Olivia have been seeing each other for a while now but have been keeping it a secret. Every time someone finds out about one of Olivia's relationships, things don't end well and she really wants this relationship to last even though it is hard with the distance. Lucy and Noah are the only people that know. No one from either squad or Erin and Olive know about them. Hank tells his squad to handle things on their own if they get any cases over the weekend. He spends more time in New York than she does in Chicago. Whenever he comes in for the weekend, Lucy takes Noah leaving Olivia and Hank alone until he leaves on Sunday night. If she gets called for a case, she can easily leave and Hank will stay at her apartment by himself.

Olivia had managed to get a few days off, so she had made arrangements to fly to Chicago and Lucy was keeping Noah. Hank was still at the District and had planned to pick her up but they were in the middle of a case. He had left her a message and she had gotten it as soon as she got off the plane, so she got a cab and took it to Hank's house. He had given her a key, so she could let herself in. She texted Hank to let him know she was at the house and he said he would be there as soon as he could. She decided to fix dinner. Hank was becoming impatient. All he wanted to do was get home and be with Olivia all weekend. He kept looking at his watch.

"You have somewhere you need to be, Sarge?"

"None of your damn business, Ruzek!"

"Sorry."

"Uh huh."

As soon as the suspect was in custody and was waiting to be booked, Hank took off and headed home. He texted Olivia as he was leaving the District.

"Anyone else think he is up to something?"

"He usually is."

"Do you guys think he is seeing someone?"

"Come on, Ruzek. This is Voight we're talking about. You know he'd never tell us anything about his personal life."

"It just seems weird that he was in such a hurry to get out of here."

"Let it go."

As soon as Hank arrived at home, he parked the car and went inside.

"Hello."

"Hey. I'm in here."

Hank took his jacket off and went into the kitchen. As soon as he saw Olivia, he kissed her.

"I missed you."

"I missed you too. Noah asked me how long we are planning to keep this a secret."

"What did you tell him?"

"I changed the subject. It is getting much harder to do that with him now that he is getting older. I don't know what to tell him."

"This was all your idea."

"I know. Whenever someone finds out about any of my relationships, they usually end in disaster. I don't want that to happen with us."

"I know you don't but everyone else has had some kind of connection to your job, right?"

"Yes."

"We've worked together but not directly. They're going to catch on eventually. They're detectives. They're not stupid."

"I know they're not. I think Fin is onto me anyway. I did tell him that he, Rollins and Kat are on their own for a few days and he gave me that look."

"I get that. What we're doing is no one's business but ours anyway."

"That's true."

"What's for dinner?"

"Spaghetti."

"One of my favorites."

"I know. It's one of Noah's too."

Olivia kissed Hank again and then she finished fixing dinner. Hank set the table and once dinner was ready, they sat down.

"Hank."

"Yeah?"

"I hate the distance. This is becoming so hard for us to be together."

"Yeah, I know. I've been doing a lot of thinking about that. I think it's time for me to think about retiring and relocating to New York."

"You'd do that for me?"

"I doubt you're going to relocate here, so someone has to."

"I love you."

"I love you too and that's why I have to do this."

"Who takes over your unit?"

"Halstead."

"You actually trust him enough for that?"

"Sometimes I still don't trust him but I trust him more than I used to. I think he needed to be apart from Erin in order for me to see what he was really capable of. He has really grown since she has been gone."

"I've had people say that about me after my partner of 12 years retired. I started getting along better with Ed after Elliot retired as well even though it was a few years later. Ed was one of them that said he noticed a change in me once Elliot retired and I was promoted to Sergeant. He started respecting me more after I took over the squad. I know the reason he was so hard on me was because of Elliot and the way he did things."

"Who do you miss more?"

"Honestly, I think I miss Ed more. He had become such a big part of my life and even when I kept ignoring how I felt about you, he knew I wasn't 100% all in with our relationship because of that. He was the one that finally convinced me to tell you how I really felt about you. You two seemed to get along pretty well considering. Elliot, on the other hand, everything was always about him and I know I wouldn't be where I am now if he had still been around. I'm sure you two wouldn't get along because you are very similar in personality and he's the one I compared you to when we first met. Yes, he was my best friend but he never even bothered to say goodbye when he just up and retired. I still haven't heard from him and it's been almost a decade. Does it bother me? No. Not anymore. I don't care if I ever see or hear from him again."

"Speaking of best friends, have you heard from Barba lately?"

"Actually, he tries to contact me once a week if he can. I think he suspects something is going on with us too. I talked to him the other day and he asked if you and I have stayed in contact with each other. I told him that we talk all the time. Thankfully we talked on the phone instead of Skyping. He'd know for sure that something was going on. I'm surprised my son has kept the secret as long as he has. Barba has been better about staying in touch since Ed died. I wish I knew what happened to Peter though. His confession that his feelings for me got in the way of him doing his job threw me for a loop."

"After taking some time off, Jeffries gave him his job back here, so I see him all the time. I know we discussed that after what happened and I was fine that he had developed a relationship with Noah. It's not like Noah is my son. Although I would like him to be some day."

"He does too. He keeps asking me if you are going to be his dad and all I tell him is that we will have to see what happens."

They finished dinner and cleaned up. They headed upstairs to the bedroom and started kissing. They moved over to the bed, undressed each other and made love. Afterwards Hank was holding Olivia and she had her head on his chest.

"I love being in your arms like this."

"I do too. I need to ask you something."

"Ok."

Hank moved, pulled something out of the bedside table and shut the drawer. Olivia had a shocked look on her face.

"Olivia, will you marry me?"

"Yes, of course I will marry you!"

Hank put the ring on her finger and then they kissed.

"We do have to call Noah and tell him."

"He knows about this?"

"Yep. The last time I was in New York and actually spent some time with him when you went in for a while, we went to the jeweler and picked out the ring. I wanted him involved with this. He called me earlier and asked when I was planning to propose, so I told him I was thinking about doing it sometime this weekend."

"You are a sneaky man, Hank Voight but I love you. Does this proposal have anything to do with the reason you decided to retire and relocate to New York?"

"It's part of it. We've been dealing with this distance thing long enough. I want us to be together all the time. I knew from the moment you threatened to arrest me that you had my heart even if you didn't."

"I was just afraid to admit my real feelings for you because of how bad I am with relationships. We had slept together a few times including after Yates' trial and at that point, we agreed that there were no strings attached. I don't know when I realized I wanted more. Maybe it was when I came here for Justin's funeral to support you, Olive, Daniel and Erin even though technically I was with Ed. A part of me knew my relationship with Ed wasn't going to last but you being in my thoughts so much didn't help matters."

"Oh sure, blame me."

"I'm not blaming you. I should have been more honest with Ed but he did know that I was unsure of my real feelings for you when we started seeing each other. I know I'm where I want to be and that's with you. You also love my son unconditionally.

They started kissing and were about to make love again when Hank's phone rang.

"Damn it!"

"Don't answer it."

Hank looked to see who it was. It was Trudy.

"What's up, Trudy?"

"Did you want to meet Mouch, Meredith and me at Molly's?"

"I think I'll pass."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

"If you change your mind, we're heading over there now."

"Yeah, ok."

"Bye."

"Bye."

Hank ended the call.

"What did Trudy want?"

"She wanted to know if I wanted to meet her, Mouch and Meredith at Molly's."

"You could have said yes. We can go."

"You sure?"

"I don't care if Trudy knows about us. I trust her."

"Ok. Let me call her back."

Hank called Trudy back and told her he would meet her there but they would meet them outside. He hung up, kissed Olivia and then they got out bed. They got dressed and left for Molly's. When they got there, Hank didn't see any of the cars from his unit, so they were safe for now. Meredith, Trudy and Mouch were waiting outside. They got out of his SUV and walked over to them holding hands.

"Hank, when did this happen?"

"A while ago. We've been trying to keep quiet about it."

"How long ago is a while?"

"A couple years."

"Did Alvin know?"

"He suspected it but I never came out and told him."

"A couple years? Are you kidding?"

"No."

"No one knew?"

"Noah and Lucy, his nanny, are the only ones. I go to New York a lot more than she comes here but she was able to get a few days off, so she decided to come here this weekend."

"Lindsay doesn't know?"

"No. Not even Olive knows."

"Damn, you two are good."

The 5 of them went inside and the only ones there were the ones from 51.

"Hey, Mouch and Trudy."

"Hey."

"Voight."

"Casey."

"Nice to see you again, Lieutenant Benson."

"Actually, it's Captain now. I've been a Captain for about a year. Please, call me Olivia."

"Then you can call me Matt. Congratulations on the promotion."

"Thank you."

Everyone told Stella what they wanted and then they went to sit down. Olivia had her left hand on the table, so Trudy saw it.

"Hank."

"What?"

"Are you two engaged?"

"Yep."

"No kidding, you're getting married?"

"Yeah."

"Who's relocating?"

"I am. They don't know yet."

"When did this happen?"

"A little bit ago."

"Congratulations!"

"Thanks."

"Congratulations, Hank and Olivia!"

"Thanks."

"Congratulations!"

"Thank you."

Stella brought their drinks and then they all clinked glasses. What Olivia didn't know was that Fin had pinged her phone and knew she was in Chicago, so he and Rollins decided to check things out. They had even contacted Erin. They arrived in Chicago and Erin drove to Hank's house. She used her key to get in but no one was there. They headed over to Molly's. By the time they got there, the rest of the squad was arriving.

"Hey, Erin."

"Hey."

"What brings you here?"

"Fin found out the Benson is here, so we're figuring that she and Voight are together."

"You know, I suspected something too and everyone thought I was nuts."

"You are nuts, Ruz."

"Shut up, Kev! Why would Voight deny that?"

"Because it's Voight. He doesn't like discussing his personal life with anyone and obviously that includes me and I'm practically family."

They all went in and saw Hank and Olivia sitting with Trudy, Mouch and Meredith. Olivia saw them.

"Uh oh!"

"What?"

"I think we're busted."

Erin walked over to them.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here? Hank Voight and Olivia Benson sitting here together looking cozy. How long has this been going on?"

"My personal life is none of your damn business, Erin."

"Then mine is none of yours."

"The last I checked, you don't have much of one."

"That's not the point."

"Oh no? You're not back with Halstead."

"I know I'm not but I could still have a boyfriend in New York."

"You don't though."

Erin gave Hank a look.

"How did we not know that you and Voight were seein' each other, Liv?"

"My personal life is none of your business, Sergeant."

Fin gave Olivia a look.

"Hank, why won't you tell me?"

"Tell you what?"

"You know what. How long have you and Liv been seeing each other?"

"Pretty much since she and Tucker broke up."

"You have not."

"Yeah, we have."

"How did no one know about this?"

"Noah and Lucy knew."

"Damn! The kid knows how to keep a secret?"

Olivia covered her face with her hands and ran her fingers through her hair.

"What the hell is that? You two are engaged too?"

"That's what it looks like. That actually just happened."

"How just?"

"A little bit ago."

"This is exactly why I didn't want anyone to know because I'd be interrogated by my own squad."

Hank started rubbing her back to calm her down.

"Liv, come on! We're just messin' with you. I'm just glad you finally started seein' someone that is actually worthy of you. No one else has ever been worthy of you. You're so much better than these men you seem to end up with. Voight brings out the best in you."

"Thank you. I appreciate that."

"I'm happy you two finally got together. I've been wanting this to happen since the first time you two worked together."

"We've had an on and off thing prior to this but it was a no strings attached thing. I just kept denying my feelings for Hank. I just don't want to mess this up. Ed knew that I wasn't 100% all in with our relationship and he's the one that convinced me to tell Hank how I really felt."

"Who would have thought that would have come from Tucker? I sure as hell wouldn't."

"He and Hank met on a couple occasions and he suspected that we had finally gotten together. He had asked me that at his retirement party and I told him we were. He said he was glad I was happy."

"I get why he did what he did because no one wants to live like that but even as much as I disliked the guy, he didn't deserve that either."

"Yeah, I know. It still hurts sometimes. I still blame myself for what happened to Simon because I had told him not to ever contact me again after he stood me up for lunch."

"That wasn't your fault."

"I'm glad my sister finally realized that she needed help and I am trying to have a better relationship with my mother now that she's living in New York. She is spending more time with the girls."

"Does she have the girls now?"

"No. Sonny is staying with them."

"So, when are you two going to start dating already?"

"I don't know. Sometimes I think he's too good for me and I'm going to screw it up. He is so good with the girls though and Mama even asked me that. She said it might do me some good to be with someone like him. She said she understood why I wouldn't have married Al because I just didn't love him and I never would have married Declan either. This settling down crap isn't me though and I don't want to hurt Sonny."

"He understands more than you think he does."

"Yeah, I know he does and he was so amazing after what happened with Bucci."

"Hank was so supportive after Sheila took Noah. We ended up coming out here and spent a little bit of time with him before Noah went back to school."

"I don't date good guys."

"Maybe you need to rethink that. I would love to see the two of you together and I am fine with it. I was talking to Carisi's boss the other day and she even said she noticed a spark between the two of you. We're both fine with you two being in a relationship if that's what happens."

"I don't know, Liv. What if we try to date and it doesn't work out? I don't wanna lose him as a friend."

"That was kind of where I was with Hank. We were friends and then we decided to try a long distance relationship. I didn't want to screw up what we had. I know what happens when people find out about my relationships. I was kind of hoping to wait until we were married before we told anyone. So much for that."

"So, now that you two are engaged, what happens?"

"I'm planning to put my papers in and retire. This distance thing is hard and I want us to be in the same city."

"Uh oh, that means Halstead is in charge."

"Yep."

"Sarge, are you sure?"

"Yeah. You'll do fine."

"Ha, ha! Jay will be running the unit. That's funny."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Erin."

"You're welcome."

Everyone got drinks and they toasted Hank and Olivia and to the future. After everyone got caught up, they went home and went to bed. Erin, Fin and Amanda hadn't made arrangements for a place to stay, so they all ended up at Hank's. Erin and Amanda shared the guest room and Fin took the sofa. The next day, Fin and Amanda headed back to New York and Erin stayed for the rest of the weekend. Hank and Olivia ended up telling Noah their good news and they had even called Olive to tell her. Hank went back to New York with his girls, so he and Olivia could start looking for a bigger place to live.
