A/N: This one was not easy for me to write as it is based on something that happened to me just over 4 months ago but it is not the exact same way it happened to me. Unfortunately, my cat died, which has been very difficult and I also lost my favorite teddy bear that I have had since birth. This is related to the chapter titled "Smoky". I don't own any of the characters except my own.

Fire

Hank, Olivia and Noah were in New York for the long weekend and Trudy told them she would look after their cat Smoky while they were gone. She went over to their house after her shift and went inside. Everything seemed ok and she gave him some treats. He came out and was rubbing up against her. She sat down and he jumped up next to her and started purring.

"How are you doin, Smoky? Are you being good while they're gone?"

"Meow!"

"Good to know."

Trudy stayed with him for a little while and headed home. A few hours later, the smoke detectors in the house started going off. One of the neighbors saw the flames and called 9-1-1. They knew Hank, Olivia and Noah were gone and called Trudy again. Trudy rushed over there just as Truck 81, Engine 51, Battalion 25, Ambulance 61 and others were pulling up.

"Trudy, they're gone, right?"

"Yes. I was just here a couple hours ago checking in on Smoky. Noah is going to be devastated if something happens to him."

"Ok. We'll look for him."

"Severide, make it fast."

"Got it, Chief. Squad 3, let's go!"

"Engine 51 has you covered."

"Thanks, Herrmann."

Engine 51 started spraying as they walked into the house. They could see the flames coming from Noah's room. They raised the ladder and started spraying the room, while Squad 3 did their search for Smoky.

"SMOKY. Everyone, spread out."

"Got it, Lieutenant."

Everyone went to look for Smoky. Kelly went down to the basement and saw Smoky in the corner.

"Hey there, Smoky."

"Meow!"

He went over to him and picked him up and pulled out his radio.

"Got him!"

Kelly wrapped Smoky inside his coat and headed upstairs. Squad 3 left the house as Engine 51 and others battled the blaze from the inside and Truck 81 and others did it from the outside.

"Severide, you get him?"

"Got him, Chief."

"Good."

Kelly headed over to where Trudy was standing with the neighbor that had called and opened his coat. He handed Smoky to Trudy.

"Thanks."

"No problem. I found him in the basement."

"Let's get him to my clinic and check him out."

"Great. Thank you."

"No problem."

Trudy saw Mouch looking over at her and she waved at him. He waved back and then she left. They went to the Veterinary clinic and Smoky got checked out.

"He appears to be ok but I do want to keep him here overnight for observation and maybe give him a little oxygen."

"They'll be happy to hear that he's ok."

"I knew they were gone, since Noah is friends with my kids."

"I'm glad you were keeping an eye on the house and called me. Noah would be devastated if he lost this little guy. My husband and his co-workers rescued his litter and mom from a fire. We have the mom. This is actually the second fire he has been in."

"He is obviously a fighter."

"Yeah, he is. He will probably stay with us until Hank, Olivia and Noah come home. I need to call Hank and Olivia."

Trudy got out her phone and called Hank.

"What's goin' on, Trudy?"

"I have some bad news."

"What?"

"There was a fire in your house."

"What! Is Smoky ok?"

"The firefighters are there now. Squad 3 rescued Smoky. Severide said he was in the basement. As we speak, I am at the Veterinary clinic with your neighbor, who is the one that called 9-1-1 and me. Smoky is fine but he wants to keep him overnight for observation."

"Where did the fire start?"

"Noah's room. I'm sure Mouch will be fine with it but if you want to stay with us, we will find the room. We will keep Smoky with us as long as you need us to."

"We appreciate that. Thanks. Thank Ron for his help too."

"I will."

Trudy hung up.

"Hank said thanks for all your help."

"It's really no big deal. I know how devastated Noah would be. It's devastating for anyone to lose a pet. That has always been the hardest part of my job."

"Are you going to stay here with him?"

"Oh yeah. Whenever an animal needs to be observed overnight, I always stay with them or if I don't, one of the other Vets do. I'll call you when he can go home."

"Ok, great."

Trudy left and headed back to the scene. Meanwhile in New York, Hank had just told Olivia what had happened.

"Wow! I never expected that to happen."

"Me neither. Trudy said Ron took Smoky to his Veterinary clinic and wants to keep him overnight even though he's ok."

"As long as he's alive. I'm not sure how Noah would react to losing him."

"Our things can be replaced but the cat can't."

"That's true. I'm not sure I want to go back there once everything is redone."

"I don't blame you. Everything happened in his bedroom. Trudy said that we can stay with them. They'll find the room and she's sure Mouch will be fine with it."

"Do they know what happened?"

"She didn't say. We'll tell Noah in the morning. Let him sleep now."

"Yeah."

Hank kissed Olivia and then they held each other for a while. Neither Hank nor Olivia slept much. They had finally fallen asleep about 3 in the morning. Around 7, Noah woke up.

"Mommy, Daddy!"

"Hey, Sweetie."

"Mommy, what's wrong?"

"Daddy got a call from Auntie Trudy last night. There was a fire at our house."

"Is Smoky ok?"

"He is. He spent the night at Dr. Ron's Veterinary clinic."

"But he is ok?"

"Yes."

"Ok. Good."

Hank's phone rang, so he answered it. It was Matt Casey.

"Hey, Casey."

"Hey, Voight. I take it Platt called you."

"Yeah."

"Severide and I were at your house most of the night. It appears that it was something with the wiring to Noah's room. I know you had it up to code, since the Electrician I know did it for you."

"Right."

"The Electrician was even here too and he confirmed it."

"There was something about the guy who did it that I didn't trust though."

"He said the guy that had done yours disappeared not too long after that. We are having OFI looking into it."

"I want my squad in on it too."

"Ok. I'll contact Antonio."

"Ok. Thanks and thanks for calling."

"Yeah, no problem."

Hank hung up the phone.

"What did Matt want?"

"He said he and Severide were at our house most of the night and it appears it's something with the wiring to Noah's room. He knows we were up to code, since the Electrician he knows did it. I said there was something about the guy that actually did the work that I didn't trust. The Electrician himself said the guy disappeared shortly after he did the work. OFI is looking into it and I told him I wanted my squad in on it too. He said he will call Antonio."

"I hope the guy can be found."

"Yeah, me too. I'll need to stay out of the investigation though but I'm ok with that."

"Is that what Matt said?"

"No. I know I'm too emotionally involved with this already. I keep thinking of what could have happened if we had been there."

"It has crossed my mind too. Noah could have been in his bedroom. Are we going home any sooner?"

"Probably because I need to get a hold of the insurance company. We can still meet everyone for breakfast as planned and then see if we can get a flight out this afternoon."

"That sounds like a plan."

Olivia kissed Hank and then after Noah and Hank went to the bathroom, Olivia went to take a shower. While she was in the shower, there was a knock at the door. Hank went to answer it. It was Erin.

"Hey."

"Hey. I got a call from Jay and from Burgess about your house."

"Yeah, Trudy called last night. Casey just called and said he and Severide were at the house for most of the night and it has something to do with the wiring to Noah's room."

"I thought you had that redone."

"I did. He brought the Electrician in and he looked at it. The guy that actually did the work disappeared soon after the work was done. OFI is looking into it and I said I wanted my squad in on it too, so Casey said he would contact Antonio."

"Is Smoky ok?"

"Yeah. He spent the night at Dr. Ron's Veterinary clinic and Trudy said she will pick him up after he's released. She offered to have us stay with her and Mouch. Olivia already said she does not want to go back to the house once it's done. I don't blame her."

"I don't either."

"If you need anything, I'm here for you guys."

"Thanks, kid. We're still going to have breakfast with everyone as planned but we're going to see if we can get a flight this afternoon."

"I'll come with."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

Hank called the airline to see if he could change their reservations for that afternoon and got Erin on the same flight. Once Olivia was out of the shower, Hank went in to take his shower and once Hank was out, Noah went to take one as well. They got their stuff packed, while Erin went home to get some stuff together before they met everyone for breakfast. Trudy had texted Hank to tell him that she picked up Smoky and he was doing fine. He was now at her house. Hank replied back thanking her. Olivia had told everyone what had happened and they offered to help with whatever they could. After breakfast, they headed to the airport for the flight to Chicago.

By the time they arrived in Chicago and got their luggage, Olivia drove to Trudy's, while Hank called the insurance. She dropped Erin off at the hotel and then went to Trudy and Mouch's. They checked on Smoky and then headed over to the house. Once Olivia dropped Hank off, she went to get Erin at the hotel and they headed back to the house. The person from the insurance and Hank's squad were there when they got there. Olivia's squad had arrived as Olivia and Erin got there. They had masks because of the smell and gloves on and went in.

"Hey, Erin."

"Hey."

"Hank, is anything salvageable?"

"Everything upstairs is pretty much gone especially in his room. It's not much better in our bedroom. There is smoke and water damage on the main level and smoke damage in the basement. Whatever we have with us is all we have for clothes."

"Ok. Is the other vehicle ok?"

"It looks ok. I want to take it to get checked out and get the smell out of there."

"Ok. Erin said she called Olive and she said if we need her to come out to help, she can leave Daniel with her sister and fly out here. Everyone in New York said they'd come out here if we needed them."

"We're here for you, Sarge and Lieutenant. Whatever you need."

"Thanks, Atwater."

"Us too."

"I appreciate you guys being here."

"Antonio, what's goin' on?"

"We have a BOLO out for the guy that worked for the Electrician. How's Noah?"

"He's better now that he has seen Smoky."

Then Ron and his wife came over.

"Hank, Olivia."

"Ron, Cheryl, thank you so much for everything you have done already."

"No problem. Smoky is a little trooper. I gave him some oxygen overnight but if starts to develop a cough or any other respiratory issues, let me know. All of his levels seem good though and his lungs sound fine."

"Ok. Thanks."

"How's Noah?"

"He's better now that he has seen Smoky."

"I can't say that I blame him."

"Thanks, Severide."

"No problem. He was scared but he let me pick him up. I put him under my coat and took him out."

"There is an extremely grateful little boy at Trudy and Mouch's. Hank and I are grateful too. Thank you again. He's also glad he takes his stuffed elephant with him everywhere. Except to school that is."

"You're welcome. I'll have to stop over to see him after we're done here."

"He'll appreciate that."

The rest of 51 had showed up to help in any way they could. The insurance did what they needed to do and called in the restoration company to help. Everyone decided to come back the following day to start going though stuff and to find all of the important papers. They all decided to go out to dinner and called Trudy to have her and Noah meet them at the restaurant. Hank called Olive and told her that if she wanted to come out, they would welcome the help. She made arrangements for a flight on Sunday morning and flew out there. The friends from New York came out the next morning as well to help in any way they could. Olivia had taken Noah and had gone to the airport to pick up Olive, while Hank went to the house with Erin. After Olivia dropped Olive off at the house, she took Noah shopping to get clothes for the 3 of them. By the time they got back, the group from New York was there.

Hank and Olivia were grateful to their family, friends and squads for helping out and they all knew the next several months would be a challenge but they knew that they had all these people for support as they rebuilt their lives and tried to resume as normal a life as possible. The next step for them to try to do that was looking for a new home and getting everything in order for the insurance. There had been a lead on the case as they had found evidence that the guy was trying to get revenge on Hank for putting one of his family members in prison but the guy had turned up dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. Hank was glad that that part of it was out of the way but he had then started blaming himself for what had happened. Olivia tried to reassure him that he was not to blame and they would get through it as a family just like they did everything else.

Reviews and suggestions are appreciated. Please note that while I try to write what people suggest, I don't normally write Stabler because again, he is not one of my favorite characters and I don't see the need to incorporate him into all my stories or chapters. There are people who don't care for him. The last chapter I wrote with him was pushing it as I wasn't planning on writing another one for that particular one shot. If I think of something at a later date, I will write it but for right now, that won't be happening.
