A/N: This was an idea from HMG2000. This takes place not too long after Elliot returns to the NYPD. There will probably be another chapter to this. I don't own any of the characters.
Learned My Lesson
SVU had been working on a case that was somehow connected to a case Intelligence had as well and somehow Organized Crime had gotten involved, which meant she had to work with Elliot. Intelligence was on its way from Chicago and Olivia was glad for that. Hank had texted her to tell her that they had just arrived at the airport, so they would be there soon and the squad was working on the case. Olivia was in her office when Elliot had come in.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"When can we talk?"
"About what?"
"Us."
"There is no us and there never will be. I'm in a relationship with someone and I'm very happy."
"Tell me about him."
"It's none of your business."
"I'm making it my business."
"I'm not in the mood to deal with you right now."
"You haven't wanted to deal with me since I came back into your life."
"I feel bad because of what happened to Kathy because none of you deserved that including her. You obviously want an actual relationship with me. I don't. You need time to mourn your wife. I really wish you hadn't come back into my life. I've told you this before and I'm going to tell you again, if you want to be friends, we can be friends but nothing more. That is the only way I will allow you to be in my life."
Before he could respond, she saw Intelligence some in, so she got up and walked out of her office. Her squad was back as well.
"Hey."
"Hey, Captain.
Olivia hugged everyone and kissed Hank, which she hoped Elliot saw but she had her back to her office. Elliot came out of her office.
"I'm Detective Elliot Stabler from Organized Crime."
"I'm Sergeant Hank Voight from the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department. This is Detective Jay Halstead, Detective Hailey Upton, Officer Adam Ruzek, Officer Kevin Atwater and Officer Kim Burgess."
"How do you all know each other?"
"We've worked together before. I've known all of them for 6½ years and the squads are pretty close."
"You're the one that recently lost his wife, right?"
"Yep."
"Sorry to hear about that."
"Thanks."
"Captain, can we talk for a minute?"
"Sure."
Hank and Olivia went into her office and she shut the door.
"You haven't told him about us yet, have you?"
"He knows I'm in a relationship with someone and I'm happy but he doesn't know who with."
"Ok."
"I just want this case to be over with, so you and I can spend some time together. I have missed you so much."
"I've missed you too."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Olivia kissed Hank and then they joined everyone out in the Squad Room. Lucy had come in with Noah, Jesse and Billie, since she was taking them to see her parents for the weekend. Beth Anne had taken Mason to Atlanta for the weekend, so Lucy had agreed to take the girls. As soon as Noah saw Hank, he ran over and hugged him.
"Dad!"
"Hey, kiddo."
"I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too."
"I'll be gone all weekend and won't be able to see you."
"I was thinking that I'll maybe stay a couple days longer, so I will be there when you get home on Sunday and then I can take you to and pick you up from school."
"Awesome! I can't wait until you're with us all the time."
"Soon."
"A couple more weeks."
"I love you."
"I love you too, kiddo."
Noah hugged Hank again and then he hugged Olivia who was standing next to Hank. He then hugged everyone else except for Elliot. The girls hugged Amanda and then they hugged both Olivia and Hank.
"Thanks again, Lucy."
"No problem. I don't mind and my parents loved having them there the last time they were there."
"Hank and I will video chat with him later."
"Ok."
Lucy and the 3 kids left and then everyone got to work on the case. A few hours later, they ended up bringing the suspect and his lawyer in. Elliot went into the Interrogation Room and so did Hank. Carisi was there.
"Liv, are you sure about this?"
"This case is related to something Intelligence was working on and I wanted Hank in there. Elliot does whatever the hell he wants anyway. I'm expecting Elliot to start in with Hank because he still thinks he has a chance with me. That really wasn't the way I wanted him to find out about me and Hank but I really can't blame Noah. I'm curious to see which one the perp gets to first and I'm guessing it won't be Hank."
"Voight has been better."
"I'm glad to hear that and I'm sure that has a lot to do with me. If looks could kill, Hank would be a dead man right now. I don't like the way Elliot is glaring at him."
"Hopefully Detective Stabler won't mess this up. I think I'm more worried about him than I am Voight."
"I am too especially after what he pulled when he was in the Interrogation Room when we had the person we thought was the one that was responsible for what happened to Kathy."
Olivia went into the Interrogation Room.
"Liv, I got this."
"You're not the ranking officer in the room. That's either me or Sergeant Voight."
"If the Detective wants to interrogate the guy, let him."
Just hearing Hank's voice behind him made the suspect nervous. Hank stood by the door with his arms folded in front of his chest and Olivia was next to him. During the interrogation, Elliot had been asking most of the questions and Hank and Olivia would both occasionally ask something. Elliot was getting into the suspect's face and still continued to glare at Hank. Fin knocked on the window, so Olivia went out. Carisi said they had enough to charge him with. They sent him to booking.
"Thank you for being the one to do most of the talking. That other guy sounds like the Devil."
Elliot smirked and Olivia rolled her eyes.
"Stabler, what is your problem?"
"He is."
"Why?"
"Because he's here."
"He has every right to be here."
"You got a problem with me, you take it up with me. You got that?"
"Stay the hell away from her. You got that?"
"Why would I do that? We love each other."
"She might think she loves you but now that I'm back in her life, all that could change."
"Elliot, stop it!"
"Why him, Liv?"
"Because we have a mutual respect for each other, which is more than I can say for you. That respect grew into a friendship and later love. He loves me and my son. You left and I didn't hear from you for a damn decade. A decade. I'm supposed to just welcome you back with open arms and want you in my life again? I'm not that person anymore. I'm not the person I was when you left. You still don't know how to handle yourself in the Interrogation Room. This is the second time since you've been back."
"If he wasn't in here, I wouldn't have gotten so pissed."
"Somehow I doubt that. You have some serious anger management issues that you need to deal with and should have dealt with before they allowed you to come back to the NYPD. You have always had this problem. You and I will never have anything more than a professional relationship and that's even pushing it. Right now, I don't even want to see you. You go off on anyone in my Interrogation Room, Squad Room or office again and that includes me, Hank, Fin, anyone from my squad or any perp, I will write you up for insubordination. Do I make myself clear, Detective?"
"Yeah, sure. Whatever."
"What was that?"
"Yes, Ma'am!"
Elliot glared at Hank and stormed out. Hank and Olivia then went into her office and sat down on the sofa.
"I am so sorry."
"It's not your fault."
"Thank you for not getting into it with the perp and with Elliot. He hasn't changed at all in the decade he was gone."
"I learned my lesson with the perps at least. They sometimes try my patience but I'm trying to be better for you."
"This is what I love about you."
"You had to compare me to him when we first met, huh?"
"I'm sorry I did that. I was hoping I'd never see him again."
"It's ok."
They kissed and then there was a knock on the door.
"Yes, Fin."
"How'd you know it was me?"
"Lucky guess."
"You ok?"
"As if the last year wasn't shitty enough with what happened to Ed, I did not need Elliot coming back into my life and messing things up for me, which I know he's going to do. He does not need to know that Hank and I are getting married soon because it's none of his business and he will probably try to stop it from happening."
"We still had the speaker on after the perp was taken to booking, so we all heard the conversation."
"I'm actually glad for that."
"He just better not ruin our wedding. He does, I won't behave."
"I don't doubt that. I love you and nothing including him will ever change that."
"I love you too."
"You deserve this, Liv. This is the happiest I have seen you since I've known you and that's over 20 years."
"You're right about that. I cared about Ed and I miss him terribly. I won't deny that but I was fighting my true feelings for Hank the entire time I was with him. I didn't know what I wanted with Hank until I had agreed to start seeing Ed. We had a friends with benefits relationship going on since that first time we had worked together and honestly, I never expected him to wait around for me because I couldn't make up my mind as to what the hell I wanted."
"If I didn't have you in my life, I don't think I'd be in a relationship. I didn't want to be with anyone until I met you. I was a little hurt when you were with Tucker but I also couldn't make up my mind either. You have made me want to be a better person."
"I wouldn't have gotten through a lot of what I've been through these last few years if it hadn't been for you and my squad. You were all there for me when Sheila kidnapped Noah and with what happened with Ed. Elliot would never understand my relationship with Ed because he hated him. I did too but people changed. Ed did change for the better. Elliot is still the same person he always has been and he seems angrier after losing Kathy the way he did. He's always had anger issues."
"That's for sure."
"I understand what the guy is going through. I think I got angrier after Camille died and I also did what I did to the guy that killed Justin. I should have listened to Erin in the first place. I didn't want Olinsky to take the fall for that but he said he wanted to. Things were never the same between him and Meredith after he admitted to her that he had had an affair while undercover, which resulted in him fathering another child and it went downhill even further after they lost Lexi. He told me that I was given a second chance with you and Noah. I'm not proud of what I did."
"I do appreciate that you were honest with me about it from the beginning and I completely understand why you did it."
Everyone came to the doorway.
"Everything ok?"
"Yeah."
"Is it just us or is that Elliot guy full of himself?"
"He is. He's always been that way."
"That's for damn sure."
"Were you two ever together at any point?"
"We cared for each other because we were partners. I won't deny that but I always respected that he was married. His wife was barely in her grave and he's already admitting his feelings for me. There were people that assumed there was more going on between us but I never wanted to cross that line with him. I still don't. He doesn't get that. I didn't want him finding out about Hank and me the way he did but I can't blame Noah. I don't want Elliot to know we're getting married soon because he'll try to ruin things for me. I don't like that he told Hank that since he's now back in my life, my feelings for Hank will probably change. They will not."
"He'll have to get through the rest of us if he tries anything."
"That's good to know."
"Voight's happy and that makes the rest of us happy."
"It also means you're gettin' rid of me."
"Then Halstead is in charge and I'm not so sure about that."
"You're so funny, Ruzek."
"You'll survive, Ruzek."
"I hope so."
Everyone called it a day and went out for dinner. Elliot had been looking into Hank because he wanted to prove to Olivia that he was better for her than Hank was. He found a lot on him and had gotten a hold of the transcript from the Yates trial, which showed Yates accusing Hank of forcing himself on Nadia. Proud of himself, he then sent Olivia a text asking her to meet him because it was important that he talk to her. Everyone was still at the restaurant when Olivia had gotten the text.
"What the hell does he want now?"
"Who?"
"Elliot. He said it's important that I meet him, so we can talk."
"Do you want me to go with you?"
"No. I need to deal with him once and for all and I need to do it by myself."
"Leave your phone on, so we can find you if we need to."
"I will but he wants me to meet him at Organized Crime's Precinct."
Olivia kissed Hank and then she left to meet Elliot at Organized Crime's Precinct. When she arrived, she went in and went upstairs. Elliot was at his desk.
"What's so damn important, Stabler?"
"I think you need to see this."
Elliot handed Olivia the file with everything he had found out about Hank and she looked at it.
"He's not who you think he is, Liv."
"I already know all this. He tells me everything."
"You actually believe that? You know he killed the guy that killed his son and let someone else take the fall for it?"
"I know what happened."
"He rough up perps too, so it's not just me."
"I know. He tried that the first time we worked together and I threatened to arrest him if he did it again. After that, I didn't have to tell him again. He has told me that I'm one of the few people who can talk to him like that and get away with it. He doesn't take any crap from anyone and he definitely does not have the ego you have."
"Did you know he raped someone? It says it right here."
"You're going to believe a serial rapist? I know Hank is not capable of that. Yates was just trying to make Hank look bad just like you are now. You're just being a hypocrite to try make yourself look good in my eyes. That'll never happen. Hank isn't going anywhere."
"We'll see about that."
"Stay the hell away from us and stay out of my life! You could back to Italy for all I care and I wouldn't miss you."
Olivia threw the file at Elliot and then she walked out. She got into her SUV and called Hank.
"Hey."
"Hey. Are you at my apartment?"
"Yeah. We're all here."
"Ok. I'll be home soon."
"Ok."
Olivia arrived at her apartment and went upstairs. Then she went inside. Erin was there too.
"Everything ok?"
"I am so pissed right now."
"What did Stabler do now?"
"He dug up all this dirt on Hank and thought he'd give it to me. That included the stuff on Kevin Bingham and the transcript from the Yates trial accusing him of forcing himself on Nadia. I told him I already knew everything. He had to bring up that you like to rough perps up. I told him he was being a hypocrite and trying to make himself look good in my eyes. I told him that would never happen and you weren't going anywhere. All he said was 'we'll see about that'. I told him to stay the hell away from us and to stay out of my life. I told him he could go back to Italy for all I care and I wouldn't miss him. I threw that folder at him and walked out. Now I have to worry about you when we're not together."
"I can take care of myself. It's just another couple weeks."
"We have his back. Don't worry."
"I can't help it. I just have this bad feeling he's going to do something to you. I don't want to lose you."
"Maybe you two should just elope and we can have the party like we originally planned. If I have to, I can see if this Stabler guy has anything he's hiding. I can dig a lot deeper than the police can anyway. If he does anything to Hank, I will personally make his life a living hell. "
"Are you two going to get married any sooner?"
"I want to."
"I think I do too."
"Vegas or Atlantic City?"
"I at least want to tell Noah what we're doing."
"I can put him on video chat while we're there and it'll be like he's there with us."
"That's a good idea. We should do the same with Olive. It's a good thing that we already bought the rings and they're here."
"Yeah, it is. We don't have anything to wear though."
"I don't care about that. Is everyone going?"
"I probably shouldn't. I might be tempted to gamble."
"We could share a room and then I can keep an eye on you."
"I do want to see Liv get her happily ever after."
"We'll all go."
They decided to go to Atlantic City. Everyone made hotel reservations and then they drove down. Olivia called Lucy and explained things to her and that they wanted to include Noah via video chat, so Erin would be contacting him. It was ok if he stayed up later. She said she would tell him. Erin had also texted Olive and told her what they were doing. She told her she'd call her along with Noah via video chat, so they could see the wedding.
A couple hours later, they arrived in Atlantic City and got checked into their hotel. They went to find a wedding chapel and then Erin contacted both Noah and Olive. It was even early enough that Daniel was still up. Kim had contacted Trudy through video chat, so she was there as well. In front of both squads and their family, Hank and Olivia became husband and wife.
"You really deserve this, Liv."
"Thanks, Fin."
"Congratulations, you two!"
"Thanks."
"Congratulations, Mom and Dad!"
"Thank you, Sweetie."
"Thank you for letting me be a part of it even though I wasn't there."
"You're welcome. We're still going to have the party we were planning to have in a few weeks when Hank moves here. I'm going to contact Trevor to have him do the paperwork for Hank to officially adopt you too."
"I'm so excited to finally have a dad. I'm glad you let me call you that before it was official."
"You're welcome, kid."
"We'll see you in a couple days, ok?"
"Ok. I love you both."
"We love you too."
Olivia blew a kiss to Noah and then he hung up.
"Daniel and I are happy for you too. Like Noah said, thank you for including us even if we weren't there in person."
"You're welcome. We'll see you both soon, right?"
"Definitely. We plan to be there for your party."
"We love you both."
"We love you too."
Olivia blew a kiss to them as well and then they ended the call.
"Platt wants to talk to you both."
Kim handed Hank her phone.
"Hey."
"I'm really happy for the two of you. I'm really gonna miss you when you leave Chicago."
"I'll miss you too. I might miss the rest of them too but it's time for me to move on and be where I'm needed. That's with my family. That means I will be back in the same city with Erin."
"What prompted you two to get married now instead of waiting?"
"Olivia's former partner is making threats to me. She told him I wasn't goin' anywhere and his reply to that was 'we'll see about that'. This was actually Erin's suggestion."
"Is that the guy that just lost his wife and already told Olivia he loves her?"
"Yep. That's the one. She hadn't told him about us yet but Lucy came to the Precinct with the kids and Noah called me Dad when he saw me. She didn't want him finding out that way but she can't blame Noah. She mentioned that she didn't want him to find out that we were getting married soon because he'd try ruining it for her. He dug up all this dirt on me like the Kevin Bingham stuff and he looked at the transcript from the Yates trial and said I was forcing myself on Nadia."
"That's a bunch of shit."
"Yeah, it is. She doesn't want to have to worry about me when we aren't together. I said I can take care of myself. The squad said they had my back."
"I do too. I always have."
"Thanks. I appreciate that. Before we decided to get married, I decided to stay a few more days, so I can spend some time with Noah. Lucy took him and Rollins' girls to her parents' in New Jersey and I told him I'd stick around a few days."
"Good. I'll let you go. I'll see you when you get back."
"Ok."
"Congratulations to you both."
"Thanks."
Trudy hung up and then they headed back to their hotel after they gave Kim her phone back. Hank and Olivia went up to their room and made love. Afterwards he had his arms around her and she had her head on his chest.
"I'm so glad we're finally married."
"I am too."
"I feel safer knowing that he can't ruin things for us. I mean, he still can since he could go after you."
"He doesn't scare me and like Erin said, if he does anything to me, she'll make his life a living hell. She's a lot like me."
"I've noticed that. If he does anything to you, I'll never speak to him again. He always has to make everything about him."
"Some people are like that."
"I just want the next couple weeks to go quickly and then we can be together all the time."
"Once we have our party, then we are gone on our honeymoon for a week."
"I know. I can't wait for that. I love you so much."
"I love you too."
They kissed and then they went to get ready for bed before they fell asleep in each other's arms.
The next morning, everyone got up, got ready and then met for breakfast.
"There's the newlyweds."
"Here we are."
Everyone looked at the menu and then they had their order taken.
"How'd you do last night, Amanda?"
Erin and I walked around the hotel but I didn't gamble as tempting as it was."
"Good for you."
"I just wanna do right by my girls."
"That makes sense. I wanted to be a better mother to Noah than my mother was to me."
"I want to be a better father to Noah than I was to Justin."
"Noah is crazy about you and so am I."
"We all need to make sure that Stabler doesn't do somethin' stupid like go after Voight."
"Like I told Olivia last night, he doesn't scare me. I've never been one to back down from a fight anyway."
"This is our fight."
"We're in too."
"So are we."
"You're my family, so of course I'm in. I always will be."
"Thanks."
"We may not have always seen eye to eye with a lot but you've been better since you've been with Olivia."
"Thanks, Jay. I appreciate that. I know the unit will be in good hands when I retire."
"I'll do my best."
Their food arrived and then everyone ate. They checked out of the hotel and headed back to New York City. Once they got back, the group from Chicago said goodbye to everyone and headed to the airport. Olivia's squad went home and then Olivia and Hank spent the rest of the day together.
The following afternoon, Lucy brought the kids home and then Noah spent some time with Olivia and Hank. Olivia ended up taking a couple days off, so she and Hank could spend time alone while Noah was at school. They also spent time doing the rest of the packing and moving some of the smaller stuff to their new place, since Olivia and Noah would be moving before Hank officially moved to New York. On Tuesday, Hank took Noah to school, since he was leaving for Chicago before Noah got home from school.
Once he got back to Olivia's and before he had to leave for the airport, they spend some more time in bed and moved more stuff to the new place. It was only a couple more weeks until Hank would be with them all the time. Neither of them could wait.
Stay tuned for more…
