A/N: This is the second part to the last chapter titled 'Learned My Lesson'. There will be a third part to this as well. I don't own any of the characters.
A Fight for Life
It was Hank's final week with CPD and he was looking forward to it. He had gotten a call from someone he least expected to ever hear from, so he had gone to meet her at a diner. Bunny was finishing breakfast.
"What do you want, Bunny?"
"I haven't necessarily been honest with you about something."
"You haven't been honest about a lot."
"I know. This is about Erin. She's your daughter."
"I'm surprised but I'm not. Why are you telling me this now?"
"I've been clean and sober for a while now and I'm just trying to fix my relationships with people. You have every right to be mad at me about everything. I realized what a terrible person I've been. I'm also going to try to work on my relationship with Erin. Do you want a cup of coffee?"
"I'm good."
They finished their conversation and then they walked out together. Someone driving by started shooting at them. They were both hit in the chest but Bunny's was fatal. Hank collapsed on the side walk. Someone in the diner had seen what happened, so they called 9-1-1. Dr. Marcel happened to be stopping at the diner on his way to Med, so he saw Hank.
"Sergeant Voight?"
Crockett took his jacket off and put it on Hank's wound. He reached over and checked for a pulse on Bunny but she didn't have one. He tried performing CPR on her but he wasn't able to get anything. The person in the diner came out.
"I already called 9-1-1."
"Good."
Ambulance 61 arrived and Intelligence was not too far behind them. None of them could believe what they were seeing.
"Brett, I need your stethoscope."
"Sure."
Sylvie handed Crockett her stethoscope, so he could listen to Hank's chest as Intelligence looked on.
"Pneumothorax. I need to put a chest tube in."
"Got it."
Sylvie and Violet got Crockett what he needed and then he put the chest tube in. Sylvie had noticed that Hank was wearing a wedding ring. Jay radioed Patrol to clear the way to Med just as they put Hank on the gurney and put him in Ambo 61. He also called for the Medical Examiner. Ambo 61 left for the hospital. Jay, Kevin and Adam stayed at the scene, while Hailey and Kim went to the hospital. Hailey contacted Trudy on the way, so she said she would meet them there after she called Olivia.
"That's Erin's mom, isn't it?"
"Yep. I just hope she wasn't somehow behind this."
When the ambulance arrived at Med, Crockett immediately took him to xray. Hailey and Kim waited until they saw someone. Then Trudy came in.
"Did you talk to Captain Benson?"
"I did. She was going to get a hold of Lindsay, pull Noah out of school and get here as soon as they could. I also called Olive. She said she and Daniel would get here as soon as they could too."
"Thankfully Dr. Marcel showed up and was already helping Sergeant Voight. The other vic I'm pretty sure was Lindsay's mother."
"That's not good."
"Do you think this has anything to do with what happened in New York?"
"Anything is possible."
Then Sharon came to find them. She handed Trudy Hank's personal items.
"Dr. Marcel needs to get Hank into surgery as soon as possible. We need someone to consent to the surgery."
"Is verbal ok?"
"Yes."
Trudy called Olivia.
"Hey, Trudy."
"Hey. They need to get Hank into surgery as soon as possible, so they need consent. I'm going to give the phone to Sharon Goodwin."
"Ok."
"Ms. Goodwin, this is Olivia Benson, Hank's wife. They just recently got married."
"Ok, thank you."
Sharon talked to Olivia and then Olivia gave her consent. Sharon ended the call and went to tell Dr. Marcel, so he could take Hank into surgery.
Meanwhile in New York, Olivia and Noah were waiting at the gate when Erin got there.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"Anything?"
"Platt just called and had me talk to Sharon Goodwin. They needed to get him into surgery."
"I got a call from Jay. Bunny was there too and she also shot but hers was fatal. I just hope she didn't have him set up to be shot. He, Ruzek and Atwater are looking into what happened and Upton and Burgess went to the hospital."
"I have my suspicions after what happened when Hank was here the last time."
"Mom, I'm going to go to the bathroom."
"Ok."
Noah left to go to the washroom.
"So, do you really think Stabler is behind this?"
"Let's just say I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe he didn't pull the trigger but I have a feeling he ordered the hit. Fin said he'll nose around and check into Elliot's phone calls."
"I would love to have the FBI involved with this. Not that I don't trust Fin or my former squad because I do but we can get the info easier than most people."
"It might be better."
Erin made a call and had someone look into Elliot Stabler including phone calls and financials. She told them what had happened and gave them the contact information for Fin and Jay. Noah came back and then a little while later, they boarded the flight to head to Chicago.
They arrived in Chicago and got their luggage. Olive and Daniel had arrived around the same time.
"OLIVIA, NOAH, ERIN."
"Hey."
The 5 of them hugged and then they went to get their rentals before heading to Med. On the way, Olivia had called Trudy. Hank was out of surgery but still in critical condition, so he was in ICU. Jay, Adam and Kevin were now there too. They all arrived at Med and went in. Jay had seen them come in.
"Hey."
"Hey, Jay."
"Let me take you to where Hank is."
"Thanks."
Jay took Olivia and Erin to where Hank was, while Olive stayed with the boys and the squad in the waiting area. Olivia and Erin went in and Trudy was sitting with him. Neither of them could believe what they were seeing. Hank had all these tubes coming out of him.
"Hey."
"Hey. Here are Hank's personal items."
"Ok, thanks. I need to find out where Hank's SUV is."
"We'll take care of that."
"Thanks."
Trudy hugged both of them and then she and Jay went to the waiting area. Olivia pulled Hank's wedding ring out and put in on her chain. She then kissed Hank's forehead, sat down and took his hand. Erin also kissed his forehead and sat down. Then Crockett came in.
"I take it you're Olivia."
"I am."
"I'm Dr. Marcel. I did the surgery. I also arrived on the scene and put the chest tube in before he was transported."
"I just hope it was enough."
"I think he'll be ok but he's still critical. We'll know more in the next 12-24 hours."
"Thank you, Dr. Marcel."
"You're welcome."
Crockett left and then Jay came back.
"What have you found out?"
"All we know is that the person that shot them was wearing a ski mask and we're trying to get to the plates on the car from the cameras."
"I'm hoping Bunny wasn't somehow involved but nothing with her surprises me anymore."
"From what people that were inside the diner had said, they were talking about something. She got there first and had breakfast before he came in. The FBI already contacted me, so they said they would help in any way they can. You don't trust us?"
"I do but Liv is still suspecting Stabler is behind it and we can dig deeper than the police. I'm having someone look into Stabler and Bunny."
"Can you stay with him? I need to check in with Fin."
"No problem. I'm not going anywhere."
Olivia left the room and went outside to get some air. Then she called Fin."
"Hey, Liv."
"Hey."
"How's Voight?"
"He's still in critical condition and Dr. Marcel said they'll know more in the next 12-24 hours. I can't lose him. I've had way too much loss in my life lately with Simon and Ed. I can't lose someone else I love."
"Stabler was here and asked where you were. I told him it was none of his business."
"I've had some texts and messages from him but I'm ignoring it. He's still at the top of my list of suspects for what happened to Hank whether he was the one that pulled the trigger or not because of what he said. If that is the case, what he did is unforgivable and just plain selfish."
"Stabler has always been selfish."
"Yeah, I know."
"Did you let Lucy know?"
"I did. I texted her and told her what happened and that Noah and I were headed to Chicago. She said she'll have her mom pray for him. I asked her if she could come get him by Sunday, since I'm guessing I'll be staying. I made sure his teacher let him know what he had to do for the rest of the week. He's in the waiting area doing his homework. Olive and Daniel are here too. They arrived in Chicago at the same time we did. It looked like Daniel was doing some school work too. I guess I should also call and reschedule our honeymoon, since he won't be traveling for a while."
"Carisi was here and he said he'll pray for Voight too."
"That's good to know. Has the FBI been around?"
"Yeah. They just left and I was gonna call you but you called me first. They said there was a number that Stabler had called multiple times in the last few days and one was just before and just after the shooting. They're lookin' into who it belongs to. That's all they said though."
"I'll talk to Erin. Keep me posted."
"I will. You do the same. Hang in there."
"Thanks, Fin."
"Love you, baby girl."
"I love you too."
"Phoebe, Rollins and Kat send her love too."
"Tell them thanks. Have you spoken with Chief Garland?"
"I did. He said the NYPD will fully cooperate with the FBI and to take as much time as you need."
"I'll be in touch."
"Ok."
Olivia hung up the phone and went back inside. Olive was in with Erin and Hank, so Olivia told them what Fin had told her.
"Then it's starting to sound more and more that Stabler is the one behind it."
"Yep. I will never forgive him for it. Fin said Stabler showed up and the Precinct looking for me and Fin told him it was none of his business. Since there was an incoming call right after it happened, we can eliminate Bunny having anything to do with it."
"I don't know. She could have gotten him there. She would do anything for money. Did you talk to Intelligence?"
"No, I did not."
"I'll go."
Erin got up and then Olivia sat down.
"Thank you for being here."
"You're welcome. This kind of changes your plans though, doesn't it?"
"A little bit. We held off on having our party for a week, so he could have time to get settled in. That and our honeymoon may need to be rescheduled. His stuff is supposed to be picked up at the end of the week. I didn't even get a hotel or anything. I'm just so afraid I'm going to lose him that I can't even think straight right now."
Olivia broke down and then Olive wrapped her arms around her.
"If anyone understands what you're going through, I do. I still miss Justin so much. Daniel doesn't really remember him and I'm not sure he could handle losing his papa. I don't know that I could handle losing Hank either. He's been more of a father to me than my own father."
"Noah is having a hard time with this too. He and Hank hit it off from the moment they met. He took Ed's death harder than I thought he would. Hank was the one that got both of us through that and he got me through what had happened with my brother Simon. You, Hank, Erin and the boys are my family. I do consider both squads my family as well and mine has been there for me through a lot as well."
"I moved to Scottsdale to be closer to my sister but sometimes I think I'm closer to Erin."
"I've been close to Erin ever since I met her."
Then Erin came back.
"The boys are getting hungry."
"I'll take them to McDonald's or something."
"I'm getting hungry too but I don't want to leave Hank right now."
"Olive and I will take the boys and we'll bring you something back."
"Ok."
Olivia told Erin and Olive what she wanted and then they left to take the boys to McDonald's. Olivia took Hank's hand again.
"Come on, Hank, open your eyes. Please. We all need you so much and I want to hear that sexy voice of yours. I love you so much."
Then Samantha came in.
"Captain Benson?"
"Yes."
"I'm Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller."
"Hank's Boss."
"Right. Everyone pretty much calls me Sam."
"Then call me Olivia."
"I talked to Detective Halstead and Agent Lindsay. They're suspecting someone connected to you did this?"
"Yeah. My former partner. He recently lost his wife and now he claims he's in love with me. He found out during the case that Intelligence had come to New York to help us with that Hank and I were together."
"Hank said you were the reason he was retiring and leaving Chicago. You were getting married or something?"
"We already did, actually. Detective Stabler was involved with the case and I was hoping he wasn't going to blow it for us. He and Hank were both in the Interrogation Room, which made me nervous because I know them both. I know Hank has been better and he tells me that's because of me but Elliot hasn't changed in the decade he was gone. He still likes to get in the perp's face. Elliot was not behaving in the Interrogation room, which included glaring at Hank and when I asked him what his problem was, he said it was Hank. They hadn't even met until that case and I am trying not to tell Elliot everything about my personal life. My son was at the Precinct with his Nanny and he called Hank 'dad', which he has been for a while and that's apparently what set Elliot off. Elliot had done most of the interrogation and the lawyer had said he was grateful for that because he said Hank's voice sounded like the Devil. All I could do was roll my eyes. Hank didn't even react. I think he's trying not to let things bother him. I told Elliot if he ever treats anyone in the Interrogation Room like he was and that included me, Hank, my squad or any perp, I would write him up for insubordination."
"Which you have the right to do as a Superior Officer. I'm aware that Hank doesn't necessarily like to play things by the book and what may or may not have happened with Kevin Bingham."
"Elliot dug that up along with something that the suspect in a case my squad had worked on with Hank's had said in court and tried telling me that Hank wasn't who I thought he was. Hank tells me everything. We have no secrets from each other."
"Was that the case that involved Nadia Decotis' death?"
"Yes. Yates said Nadia told him that Hank was forcing himself on her. That was so far from the truth. He would never do that. Elliot just wanted to make himself look good in my eyes, which won't ever happen. I told him that Hank and I loved each other and he wasn't going anywhere. All he said to that was 'we'll see about that'."
"That is a definite threat. You have every reason to be suspicious of him."
"After that happened, that night, we went to Atlantic City with both squads and made it official. When Sergeant Platt called and told me what happened, I had a bad feeling about it. I had told Detective Stabler to stay out of my life and away from my family. I also told him that I wish he hadn't come back into my life and if he went back to Italy, I wouldn't miss him. Fin, my Sergeant, told me that he showed up at the Precinct and asking about me."
"He left the NYPD or something?"
"He killed a teenage girl a decade ago and ended up putting his papers in. It took me a while to deal with that because we worked together for 12 years but as time went on, I came into my own as a cop and started climbing the ranks. He was always at a higher grade than I was but from talking with others, he never would have been promoted. My former Captain is still a big part of my life and he said if Elliot hadn't left, he would have had him take the Sergeant's exam. The guy I was seeing before Hank and I got together for good, used to be with IAB and he had asked me to take the Lieutenant's exam and when the Detective that basically replaced Elliot, who was basically a younger version of Elliot but a lot more supportive, wanted to take the Sergeant's exam because Fin didn't want to do it. I was told that even if Amaro had gotten a perfect score of the exam, the NYPD wouldn't have promoted him. I later asked him about Elliot and he said there was no way in hell he would ever allow that to happen."
"That was Captain Tucker, right?"
"Yes."
"I had heard about what happened with him. That was a sad situation."
"Yeah, it was. In just over a year, my ex committed suicide, I lost my half-brother to a fentanyl-laced heroin overdose, after he told me he was clean for 5 years and now my husband is fighting for his life after being shot in the chest. I wasn't that close to my half-brother but it still hurts. Hank was the one that got me through losing both Ed and Simon and he also kept me sane when Noah's biological grandmother decided to kidnap him. If I lose Hank, I will not be able to deal with that."
"I understand. It was obvious that Detective Halstead is having a hard time with this. The same with Agent Lindsay. I know she used to be with Intelligence."
"She and Hank are very close. She's more like a daughter to him. I just wish I knew why Erin's mother was with Hank when this happened. Erin doesn't even know. She said she wouldn't be surprised if Bunny was the one that got him to that location because she would do anything for money and the two of them never got along."
"CPD will fully cooperate with the FBI for this investigation and will assist if they need it."
"I appreciate that. My Chief said the same thing."
"I've actually been wanting to meet you. I followed the William Lewis case."
"I seem to go through hell a lot in my life but I survived."
"How long have you known Hank?"
"Like 6½ years and some of that was a friends with benefits thing. We finally got together the year after Ed and I broke up but we wanted to see if we could navigate long distance. Hank was partially the reason Ed and I broke up because I realized I loved him more than I thought I did but Ed accepted that Hank and I were together and they got along pretty well."
"Does your higher rank bother him?"
"Not at all. We were both Sergeants when we met and a little over a year later, I became a Lieutenant. We were together when I was promoted to Captain a couple years ago. That was actually around the time he proposed. We didn't want to get married until we knew what we were planning to do but I didn't really want a long distance marriage. Erin was the one that suggested we get married. I just had a feeling that if we stuck to the plan, Elliot would find out about it and try to ruin it for me."
"I'm sorry you have to go through all that."
"Thanks."
Then Jay came in.
"The FBI is here. Goodwin is letting us use the conference room and we're doing a video conference with FBI NY and SVU."
"I'm staying here with Hank. Let me know if you need me. I probably need to recuse myself from this anyway."
"Erin probably should too. I'll keep you and Erin informed."
"Thanks."
"Detective, may I join in?"
"Of course."
"Thanks. It was nice meeting you, Olivia.
"You too."
Jay and Sam left and went to join the others in the conference room. Someone from the FBI contacted one of their co-workers in NY, who were currently at SVU. While they were in the conference, Erin came back. Olive had taken the boys to the hotel.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"Anything?"
"Jay said they were meeting in the conference room with the FBI and they were doing a video conference with your people and SVU. I recused myself from the case and Jay said you should too."
"I know I do."
"He said he'd keep us updated. Where are Olive and the boys?"
"She took them to the hotel."
"I don't even know where I'm staying. His stuff gets picked up at the end of the week and I still need to call to reschedule our honeymoon."
"Here's your food."
"Thanks. I'll be as fast as I can."
"Ok."
Olivia kissed Hank's forehead and took her food from Erin. She then went to the waiting room to eat. When she was done, she walked back to where Hank was. During the video conference, they found out that Elliot had ordered the hit but the person that did the shooting was somehow connected to Denny Woods, who was still in prison. Denny Woods' name had come up when Elliot looked into Hank, so he contacted him to get someone to get Hank out of the way. The people in Intelligence were pissed. As soon as they got out of the video conference, Jay went to where Hank was.
"I am so pissed right now."
"What did you find out?"
"The person who shot Hank and Bunny was connected to Denny Woods."
"You have got to be kidding me."
"I wish I was. Stabler contacted Woods in prison and then Woods gave him the name of the person to contact. It doesn't appear that Bunny was involved in anyway and she was just there when it happened. She was probably shot, so no one could identify who did it or the car."
"Is there enough to make an arrest yet?"
"No. The person that pulled the trigger needs to be found yet and someone needs to go talk to Denny Woods at the prison, which would probably be someone from the FBI, since he probably wouldn't talk to any of us. All we know is there is a connection between Woods and Stabler. In the meantime, until the shooter is caught, someone will be posted on Hank's room. For all we know, Stabler could find out where Olivia is and come here to finish Hank off."
"All he would have to do is trace my phone. I just don't want this to end up like what happened to the victim and the cop in that first case we worked on together."
"This will be in conjunction with CPD and the FBI. FBI Agents will be undercover as orderlies or whatever and anyone that comes into this room other than anyone who is approved has to clear it with the police first. There will also be an officer or agent posted at every entrance. The hospital is fully cooperating with this as well. Goodwin was at this meeting too."
"One of us should always be here with him."
"We can alternate."
"That works. So besides one of us in here, there will be someone at the door?"
"Yes. Most likely one of us or Platt. Miller does not want us working on anything else until whoever did this is in custody. She will have anything else we may get assigned to another unit. We just need a list of who can come into this room."
Then Will came in.
"I'm just checking to see how things are going."
"My main concern right now is Hank."
"Noah is pretty upset, just so you're aware of that. He wants to see him but I told him that he probably can't until he's out of ICU. Daniel wants to see him too."
"I'd rather the boys didn't see him like this with the breathing tube in."
"It's scary for a kid. If you want, I can try to explain stuff to them."
"We'll see. He's with Olive at the hotel anyway. I hope both boys can see him before they leave. Both will be here through Sunday. I've got Lucy coming in this weekend to get Noah."
Olivia's phone rang, so she looked to see who it was. It was Trevor Langan.
"I'll be right back."
"Ok."
Olivia got up and walked out of the room.
"Hey, Trevor."
"Hey. I stopped by the Precinct and Sergeant Tutuola told me what happened. Is everything ok?"
"Not really. Hank is alive but he's still critical. He was shot in the chest."
"Is anyone in custody yet?"
"No. They're still looking for the gunman. We're pretty sure Elliot Stabler ordered the hit."
"You did tell me that he pretty much threatened him."
"Yep."
"I never liked him."
"I know. I think he just expected me to welcome him back into my life with open arms and forget the last 10 years happened. His wife was barely dead and he's confessing his love to me."
"It's quite obvious you love Hank and you have been through enough in the last year with losing Simon and Ed. You don't need to lose your husband too."
"I do not. This is unforgivable in my opinion."
"It is."
"When I talked to Fin, he said Stabler showed up looking for me. This was even after I told him to stay away from me and my family. He probably thinks I'm just going to ignore the fact that the man I love is in ICU fighting for his life and run off with him. He doesn't even know we're married."
"He won't hear it from me. I do have the paperwork for Hank to sign."
"Ok. I don't know how long I'll be here. I haven't spoken to Chief Garland but he told Fin to tell me to take as much time as I need. I may end up taking family leave, so I can get him through this. Lucy is coming to get Noah this weekend. I don't know if Erin is planning on taking any extended time off. Hank's daughter-in-law and grandson are here for the week."
"If there is anything else I can do, let me know."
"I will. Thanks."
Olivia hung up and then her phone rang again. She noticed it was Elliot, so she ignored it. He left a message telling her he was worried about her and to call him. She finally called to cancel their hotel and plane reservations. She went back to where Hank was.
"Everything ok?"
"That was Trevor Langan checking in to see how things were. He said he has the paperwork ready for Hank. Elliot just tried calling me again. He left a message and said he's worried about me. He wants me to call him. I have nothing to say to him."
"The FBI did say they're aware of how many times he's tried to contact you, since your number came up several times on his call log. I'm sure they won't get anywhere with Woods and I'm sure he'll deny everything. They want to talk to the Warden or the guards as well."
"Stabler will deny it too I'm sure."
Hank started to wake up.
"Look who's awake!"
Olivia kissed Hank's forehead, while Erin went to find Crockett. Jay had gone to tell everyone that Hank was awake.
"You don't know how happy I am to see your eyes open. I was so scared I was going to lose you."
Then Erin and Crockett came in and Crockett checked Hank out.
"We should be able to take the breathing tube out in a little while but the chest tube will still need to stay in. His lung looked good after the surgery. His vitals are looking better. Do you feel ok, Hank?"
Hank nodded his head.
"I'll check back in a little bit. If you have a pad of paper or something, he can communicate that way until the tube comes out.
"Thank you."
Crockett left and Olivia pulled her pad of paper and a pen out of her purse. Hank picked it up and wrote something.
Bunny?
"She was dead at the scene. She was probably shot because she was a witness."
Sorry.
"It's not your fault."
Said Erin was mine.
"She did?"
Yeah.
"We can do a paternity test but it won't change the way I feel about you."
Me too.
Erin kissed Hank's cheek.
Stabler do this?
"He didn't pull the trigger but he ordered the hit. Apparently Denny Woods is connected too. Elliot contacted him in prison."
Not surprised.
Sam, Trudy, Jay and the rest of Intelligence were all out in the hallway, so they could see Hank. Everyone except Trudy left. Olivia had sent Erin to call Olive to let her and the boys know that Hank was awake. She had also seen some of the FBI people and let them know as well. She also called Fin to let them know.
A few hours had passed. Hank had the breathing tube removed and Denny of course denied knowing anything about Hank's shooting. He said he wasn't surprised it had happened and no one deserved it more. After talking with the guards, they found out that Denny had been bragging to the other inmates that he was going to be released from prison in exchange for Hank Voight's murder. They checked the log and the call had come from Elliot Stabler. Denny had made a call to Elliot to see when he could expect to be released and he said he had no intention of releasing him. He had just used him to get Hank Voight out of the picture. That did not sit well with Denny. He did not like to be used like that. He made another call.
They still had not arrested the gunman yet because they couldn't find him but they had enough to arrest Elliot on. The FBI along with SVU went to Elliot's apartment and when they got there, they pounded on the door. He didn't answer, so they busted the door down. He wasn't there and most of his stuff was gone. They went to Organized Crime but no one had seen him and neither had anyone in the family. They looked at his accounts again and he had purchased a ticket to Italy. None of them could believe he had left town. They contacted their counterparts in Chicago and told them. Then CPD was informed. Sam had gone back to where Hank was.
"I just got a call from the FBI. When your unit and the FBI went to Detective Stabler's apartment, he wasn't there. Most of his things were gone as well. They went to his unit and none had seen him. His family hadn't either. They checked his accounts and he had gotten a ticket to Italy."
"So in other words, he's in the wind."
"I'm afraid so."
"Great."
"The FBI has connections overseas as well, so they'll get him eventually."
"Should we assume that the gunman did something similar?"
"They're still looking for him but the FBI was notified that Denny Woods made two calls after they talked to him. One was to Stabler. He apparently promised Woods that he'd be release after Hank was out of the picture but Elliot had no intention of having him released. The other call was to a burner but they're looking into who it might belong too."
"Probably the gunman."
"That would be my guess."
"Woods doesn't like to be double-crossed."
"That's what I've heard. Woods is being moved to solitary, so he can't have any contact with anyone. The State's Attorney is now involved."
Olivia's phone rang and noticed it was Kathleen, so she got up and went to take it, while Trudy, Erin and Sam stayed with Hank. Once Olivia was done, she came back.
"Everything ok?"
"That was Stabler's daughter wanting to know what was going on. I told her I couldn't talk to her. I hate that I can't but I don't know who I can trust."
"That's true."
Sam left. Olivia had convinced Erin to go to the hotel to get some sleep. She agreed if she could come back in the morning, so she could get a shower and breakfast. Olivia agreed to that. Erin hugged them both and headed to the hotel. Olivia called Olive and talked to the boys, so they could see Hank. They both told Noah they loved him and as soon as Hank was moved to a regular room, he could see him. They ended the call and then Olivia kissed Hank.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"I'm glad everything is ok."
"Yeah, me too. I don't think it's my time yet."
"I'm glad for that. I wasn't ready to lose you and neither was Noah. Olive said she didn't think Daniel could handle losing you and she wasn't sure she could either because you've been more like a father to her than her own father is. Bunny actually told you that Erin was yours?"
"She did. She told me she hadn't been honest with me about something and I said she wasn't honest about a lot. She said she's been clean for a while now and was trying to work on her relationships with people, which included me and Erin."
"Erin was figuring Bunny was somehow involved because she would do anything for money. After the FBI looked into Elliot's phone log, the number he had contacted several times came up right after the shooting but as an incoming call."
"It pisses me off that he's pretty much goin' to get away with what he did."
"Not necessarily. Erin did say they have connections overseas as well, so they'll get him eventually. Same with the gunman but until this person is caught, someone is staying with you. Either Trudy or someone from Intelligence will be at the door and either me or Erin in the room. They will also have agents posing as orderlies or whatever and there will be cops or agents at all entrances to the hospital. Jay said the hospital is cooperating but Intelligence is off the case because they are too close to it. I recused myself and so did Erin but her c-workers and my squad are working on things in NY. Fin told me that Chief Garland told him that I should take off as much time as I need. I'll call Chief Garland tomorrow and request family leave. I don't know how long Erin is planning to stay or if she is planning on taking any time off. I'm not exactly sure where we're going to stay, since your stuff gets picked up at the end of the week."
"Yeah, I know."
Then Trudy came in.
"You can stay with us as long as you need to."
"Thank you so much."
"You're welcome. I talked to Mouch and he was fine with it. He can help out when he's not on shift."
"Great."
"We can call and change when my SUV is picked up."
"We can always drive to New York, since you may not be able to fly."
"I may have to do rehab before I can go home."
"I'm sure you will and you won't be driving for a while anyway. I canceled our reservations for the honeymoon for now. We can reschedule it for another time. Since we had decided to have the party after you were settled in, we may still be able have it at that time. If not, we'll reschedule it too. I just want you better."
"All I want is to be with you, Noah and Erin."
Olivia kissed Hank and then Trudy went back out into the hall. Hank had fallen asleep and then Olivia did too. A few hours later, someone else relieved Trudy, so she could go home.
Once Erin got up and got ready, she grabbed something for breakfast and headed to the hospital, so Olivia could go to the hotel to get a shower. She took Olive and the boys out for breakfast and then they all went back to the hotel. Olivia made some calls, while Olive contacted Erin, so the boys could talk to Hank. Once they were done, they went to Erin and Olivia's room. The boys wanted to go to one of the museums, so Olive took them there and Olivia headed back to the hospital. Hank was doing better, so he would be moved to a regular room in the next day or so.
The next day, Hank was moved to a regular room and both Noah and Daniel were glad they could finally see him. He had also been up and walking short distances but he would do a little more each day. The FBI was still looking for the gunman and Elliot. By the end of the week, most of Hank's stuff was picked up to be sent to New York. Olivia had canceled having his SUV picked up, so she had something to drive and if they had to, she could drive back to New York.
Lucy had flown in on Saturday to take Noah home and then the boys and Olive spent as much time as they could with Hank before they had to leave. Erin had decided to stay another week, so Olivia had someone else around. They had the paternity test done to see for sure and it did confirm that Hank was Erin's father. By the end of the second week, Hank was released from the hospital and then they stayed with Trudy and Mouch until Hank was given the ok to be able to travel.
