A/N: This contains SPOILERS for the Season 9 Finale of Chicago PD, which aired on 5-25-22, so if you haven't seen the episode, don't read it. For this one, Hank and Olivia have been married for several years and both are in Chicago. Olivia is still a Captain though. I will probably do another chapter to this. I don't own any of the characters.

The Best Life Possible

Hank stood in the hospital room staring at Anna's lifeless body as he held back tears. He didn't care that she had shot him. He was ok physically but emotionally, he wasn't so sure. Once again, he had failed someone he grew to care for. Why did this always happen? Jay and Hailey were outside the room watching when Olivia came running in.

"Jay, how is he?"

"Physically, I think he's ok but emotionally, I'm not so sure."

"I know he got a little too involved with this case and if I know him, he'll be blaming himself for what happened."

"She shot him and then Hailey shot her."

"Have you spoken with Internal Affairs yet?"

"No, Ma'am but I will soon."

Hailey handed Olivia her gun and badge and then Olivia made the call to Internal Affairs. She then went into the room and rubbed Hank's bare back.

"You're here."

"Of course I'm here. Where else would I be? I got back from New York a couple hours ago."

"How'd you know where I was?"

"Jay called me. You ok?"

"Nope."

"I know you cared for her and wanted to protect her but this isn't your fault."

"She didn't have anyone else other than her son. I should probably be the one to tell him."

"How old is he?"

"6 or 7 maybe."

"We can go together after you get looked at."

Will came in, they took Hank to another room and then they took xrays. Hailey came in and Jay was in the doorway.

"Sarge, I take full responsibility for what happened. I did what I had to to protect you. I didn't want her to shoot you again. Who knows what could have happened."

"Thanks. I appreciate that. You too, Jay."

"We just need to be able to trust each other."

"I know."

"What happens now?"

"You need to talk to Internal Affairs but it should be a good shoot. If she had survived, I wouldn't have pressed charges."

"She still shot and wounded a police officer."

"That's not the entire story. She also stabbed Escano to death but I'm thinkin' she was gettin' back at him for what happened to her."

"Because she was gang raped?"

"Yeah."

"It's possible she could have used that but you never know. She probably still may have seen some jail time."

"I was hopin' she wouldn't go at all because of her kid."

"What's going to happen to her son?"

"He'll probably get put into foster care."

Internal Affairs had come in and asked to talk to Hank. Olivia, Jay and Hailey left the room and then once they talked to Hank, they talked to Hailey and Jay separately. Olivia could tell Hank had something else on his mind.

"You're thinking we need to take him, aren't you?"

"Yeah, kind of. I'm the one that basically got his mother killed."

"We did get approved to be foster parents after I moved here. It might be good for the 3 of us. I've been thinking about it because I never intended for Noah to be an only child but at this stage, I'm not so sure I'd want an infant or toddler. We can certainly ask about it."

"I doubt I'd want to if I wasn't with you. How'd the case with SVU go?"

"No big deal. It involved something we had had just before I moved here, so Fin wanted my help with the case."

Will came back in.

"Everything looks good. I'll get you cleaned up and then you can go home."

"Thanks, Will."

"Sure."

Will cleaned up Hank's wound and bandaged him up. Olivia had brought him a clean shirt, so he put that on and then he was released from the hospital. Everyone went back to the District and they told Ruzek, Atwater and Burgess what was going on. Olivia locked up Hailey's gun and badge in the desk and then she and Hank left to go talk to Rafa. He didn't take the news very well and he wanted to know what was going to happen to him. Olivia had contacted DCFS and had someone meet them at Rafa's sitter's. Once someone got there, they explained what happened and they were interested in taking him. Hank knew there was no other family. They knew it wasn't an easy process but they're home was ready for an inspection. They had 5 bedrooms and an 8-year old son, so they had plenty of room. He could stay in his same school for the remainder of the school year, which wasn't all that much longer. The Case Worker said he could stay with them for the night and then she would come in the morning for the inspection. The Case Worker left and then once Rafa said goodbye to his sitter, Hank and Olivia took him to Anna's to get his things. He took what he wanted and then they headed home. They stopped to pick up Noah at his friend's house before they went home. Olivia went in to get him, so she could tell him about Rafa and about Hank. Then they came outside and Noah got into the back, while Olivia got into the front.

"Hi Rafa. I'm Noah."

"Hi Noah. Nice to meet you."

"You too. You're going to love our house. We have a pool and a huge basement where we can watch movies, have sleepovers and stuff like that. We have an awesome dog named Yukon. He's a Husky-Shepherd mix. He's very friendly."

"I like dogs."

Olivia arrived at the house and then they went inside.

"Whoa!"

"Come on, Sweetie. I'll show you where you'll be sleeping."

Olivia took Rafa upstairs.

"Dad, are you ok? Mom said you were shot."

"I'll be fine. I just feel responsible for what happened to Rafa's mom. It was my job to protect her and I feel like I let her down kind of like I did with Justin and Al."

"You can't always help everyone."

"Yeah, I know."

Noah hugged Hank and then he went to find Olivia.

"Who doesn't have their own room anymore?"

"Everyone still has their own room, since Daniel usually sleeps in your room when he's here, so that leaves the other two rooms for Olive and Erin."

"That's true. Everyone should be coming soon, so then they can meet Rafa. We should introduce him to everyone you used to work with in New York too."

"We will eventually and yes, Olive, Daniel and Erin will all be here in a couple weeks."

"I can't wait. Do you like your room, Rafa?"

"I do. Thank you."

"You're welcome."

"Mom, can I show him around?"

"Sure."

Noah showed Rafa around the house and he also met Yukon. They had decided to go out for dinner. After dinner, they came home and Noah did his homework. Rafa had some to do as well. He had math but was having trouble, so he went to ask Noah if he could help him. Olivia and Hank had gone upstairs and saw Noah helping him and Olivia couldn't help but smile. Noah was taking his job as a big brother seriously. She didn't expect them to connect as quickly as they did. Hank went to take a shower and then he needed Olivia to help him reapply the bandage. Once Hank was done, Olivia helped him reapply his bandage and then told the boys they needed to get baths or showers before bed. Noah went first and the when he was done, Rafa went in. Rafa wanted to read one of his favorite books before bed, so everyone, including Yukon, got into bed with Hank and Olivia. It just so happened that it was also one of Noah's favorites but Rafa's was in Spanish. After the story, Noah gave Hank and hug and a kiss before he went to his room, while Rafa gave Hank a fist bump. Olivia took him to his room and tucked him in. He gave her a hug and she gave him a kiss on the head. She closed the door part of the way and then went into Noah's room. Rafa fell asleep almost right away.

"Thank you for being so supportive of this."

"I hope he can eventually come to live with us."

"We hope he can too. The Case Worker is coming over tomorrow. I just don't want you to get too attached because they could decide that he's better off somewhere else."

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you too, Sweetheart."

Olivia kissed Noah and then she left. He read his book for a little while longer and then he turned off his light and went to sleep.

"I am so proud of Noah for how he's handling this. He said he hopes Rafa can stay with us. I told him we did too but I didn't want him to get too attached because they could decide he's better off somewhere else."

"I feel like I owe it to Anna to take care of her kid and give him the best life possible."

"I love you. You know that, right?"

"Yeah, I love you too."

Olivia kissed Hank and then they fell asleep in each other's arms. The next day, Olivia got up and made sure the boys were up before she went to take a shower. Hank got up, let Yukon out and fixed breakfast and lunches for the boys. After everyone had breakfast, Olivia took them to their respective schools. She dropped Noah off first and then she took Rafa to school. She walked him in and met with the Principal and his teacher to explain what had happened. She then went home and they waited for the Case Worker to come over. Things had gone well and they had been approved to foster him and would be given the option to adopt him if that's what they decided to do.

Later in the day, she had gone to get the boys from school and they were both happy when Olivia told them Rafa was going to be living with them for a while. Both Hank and Olivia knew it would take Rafa a while to get over what had happened but they promised him that they would give him the best life they could as long as he was living in their home.
