Two things before the chapter
It's very easy to guess where I got the name for this chapter and what I was listening to while writing part of this chapter as well.
Reference drawings that I made for all four wingsuits can be found here- adar67/gallery
I hope you enjoy the chapter since it was really fun to write
Chapter 13-Where No One Goes
Hiccup grins as Astrid, Zelda, and Link arrive at Stormfly's rooftop nest, all wearing their newly made wingsuits.
Astrid is wearing a long sleeved dark tealish blue tunic, dark brown trousers, and a short sleeveless maroon vest, held in place by a Nadder brooch, identical to the one on her normal vest. Her plain leather belt is adorned with six of the metal skulls she likes wearing, three on the front and three on the back. She is wearing her usual shoulder armor and bracers, though her boots are not her Berkian boots, rather a pair of boots identical to the pair that Link wears.
Zelda's outfit is almost identical to her casual research outfit, but has some changes. The sleeves of her blue shirt are modified to be tighter fitting, and she is wearing a plain leather belt with a gold buckle, as opposed to her normal embroidered leather belt.
Link looks somewhat odd not wearing his Champion's Tunic, instead wearing a pale blue Hylian Tunic. Two belts run across each of his shoulders and are held together with a gold disc over Link's chest. He is still wearing two belts at his waist, though now they are further apart. On his forearms, he wears two leather bracers, identical to the one he usually wears on his left arm. Underneath the tunic, he is wearing his usual light tan undershirt, tan trousers, and brown boots.
All three of the new wingsuits have one thing in common. On both sides of each person, a strip of leather runs from below the armpit to the top of the boot. Two leather loops are also on each person's leg, one right above the boot and one above the knee. As with Hiccup's wingsuit, slipping one's hands through the loops and swinging one's arms outwards will open the wings.
Zelda smiles at Hiccup as she addresses him. "Wow, this is really well made, Hiccup. I love it." Link shows his appreciation with a nod, while Astrid smiles.
Hiccup accepts the compliments with a blush, then gives Zelda and Link a briefing on how to use the wingsuits. They work on deploying the wings several times before Hiccup approves of their speed in doing so. After that, Hiccup puts a hand on Toothless's shoulder and addresses them all. "Are you guys ready to try these out for real?" Both Zelda and Link nod eagerly, practically teleporting onto Toothless and Stormfly's saddles.
Astrid chuckles at the sight of Zelda, the twenty one year old crown princess of Hyrule, acting like an enthusiastic kid wanting their parents to hurry up. She gracefully gets onto Stormfly's saddle, smiles at the eager princess, then looks to Hiccup. He gets onto Toothless, opens the dragon's prosthetic tail, and nods to Astrid. At once, both Toothless and Stormfly leap into the air, furiously flapping to gain elevation.
Ten minutes later, the dragons are soaring high above Mount Rhoam, a peak about a mile and a half west of Hyrule Castle-as the crow flies-and next to Tanagar Canyon, a massive canyon separating the greater Hebra region from the rest of Hyrule.
Hiccup turns back to Link, addressing the knight. "Link, you should secure the Master Sword to Toothless's saddle. It'll be safe there while we glide." Link grunts in acknowledgement before removing the sword from his back and strapping it to the saddle.
Over on Stormfly, Astrid looks down, eyeing the distance to the mountain below. "Hiccup," she says in a raised voice. "I think we should go a little higher just to be safe." He also eyes the distance and nods confirmation to Astrid, signaling to ascend higher.
Now cruising at a good elevation, Hiccup locks Toothless's tail fin into its gliding position, unclips his prosthetic, and takes a breath. Looking down, Zelda suddenly gets nervous and shouts to Hiccup. "Are you sure we should be doing this without any practice?"
The auburn haired chief grins as he responds. "Maybe, but it's too late to turn back now. A wise man once told me that he believes in learning on the job."
As soon as the words leave his mouth, Hiccup leans to the side and lets gravity pull him off Toothless, an excited whoop escaping his mouth. Astrid shakes her head at the action, but lets a small smile show. She stands up on Stormfly's saddle and leaps after the falling shape of her boyfriend.
Zelda looks at Link, concern showing in her eyes, but Link just shrugs and gives her an encouraging smile as he slides off Toothless. She closes her eyes, takes a breath, opens her eyes and jumps off Stormfly.
As soon as the Berkians and Hylians jumped off them, Toothless and Stormfly dive down to follow them, quickly catching up. Zelda opens her eyes and is surprised to feel her nervousness evaporate in the thrill of skydiving alongside her cute loyal knight, two people from another time, and two flying fire breathing reptiles. As she falls, she can hear Link laughing and Hiccup happily cheering.
For a moment, the six of them dive, Hiccup leading, followed by Astrid, Toothless, Link, Zelda, and Stormfly. Then all of them hear Hiccup's excited yet commanding yell. "Now!" Immediately afterwards, he deploys his wings, suddenly gaining elevation as the wings catch the rising warm air updrafts.
Taking a breath, Zelda slides her arms though the loops on her legs and pulls her arms outwards. As she does so, the wings of her suit are pulled out, catching air and causing Zelda to gain some altitude. As she levels out, she sees Astrid and Link both gliding as well, having deployed their suit's wings.
Now that they are gliding, the group's positioning changes slightly, with Hiccup still leading, followed by Astrid, Zelda, Link, and with the dragons at the rear. Flipping over so that he is gliding on his back, Hiccup excitedly yells at the others over the rush of the wind. "Yeah! This is amazing right?"
Astrid gives an excited cheer in reply while Link enthusiastically grunts. Zelda doesn't hesitate in giving a happy yell as her response.
As Hiccup flips back over, he points down, causing three heads to look downwards. Zelda gasps as she sees that they're flying over Ridgeland Tower, a good two thirds of a mile east of where they started.
Hiccup takes a deep breath, always loving whenever he flies since his problems just vanish, allowing him to enjoy the present. Being able to share the feeling with others is amazing, particularly someone with a similar story to his. The group continues to glide in formation over the western island in the moat of Hyrule Castle, and towards the main castle itself.
King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule is sitting on his throne in the natural light filled Sanctum of Hyrule Castle, reading a trade document.
This late in the day, he is more focused on relaxing and dinner than documents detailing perpetuated accusations of banana shipments being stolen. In his peripheral vision, he sees a shadow of something flying by. Dismissing it as a bird, he keeps reading the document.
Seconds later, he sees three more shadows pass by. He glances up, but right as he is about to go back to the document, he sees two more shadows fly by. These last two shadows, though, look similar to the dragons of Zelda's time-displaced friends.
Suddenly King Rhoam's mind connects some dots and he jumps to his feet, dropping the document he was reading. Beckoning to his two royal guards, King Rhoam runs up the eastern flight of stairs in the Sanctum leading to Champion's Hall.
Rushing out to the eastern outdoor balcony of Champion's Hall, King Rhoam looks to the northeast sky. After a moment of scanning, he spots the distinct shapes of the two dragons, then his eyes widen as he spies four figures in front of the dragons that clearly aren't birds. Squinting, King Rhoam's disbelief grows as he realizes that the four figures are people, people who are somehow flying or gliding without a Paraglider.
As the flying people near, the King can start to make out details. The leader has what looks to be brown hair and a green shirt. The following three people all have varying shades of blonde hair and varying colors of blue shirts.
However, King Rhoam's heart skips a beat as he sees that one of the blue shirt blondes has long bright golden blonde hair and a champion blue shirt on; His only daughter, Zelda, the crown princess.
Now realizing that Zelda is one of the flying people, Rhoam figures that the brown haired leader is Hiccup. After a moment more of studying, he makes out the pale blue shirted dark blonde to be Link and the darker blue shirted pale blonde to be Astrid.
The quartet followed by Toothless and Stormfly, gracefully soar around the Sanctum and make a wide turn as they lose elevation, aiming for Zelda's courtyard. As they pass over the battlements of Hyrule Castle, they hear the guards gasping in astonishment at the flying people.
Following Hiccup's example, Astrid, Zelda, and Link tighten into dives, rapidly approaching their landing point. At a command from Hiccup, they all throw open their wings, creating drag in order to slow down.
Hiccup lands first, slightly off balance since his prosthetic is in riding mode which isn't great for walking. Astrid gracefully lands, dropping into a crouch. Zelda touches down, but runs a few yards forward since she didn't completely get rid of her momentum. Unsurprisingly, Link lands lightly on his feet, seeming to have a natural ability to get the hang of anything easily.
Toothless and Stormfly land as well, walking over to the small pond to get a drink Hiccup is grinning as he shoves the wing straps off his arms and stuffs the wings into the leather strips that they are held in. Astrid is doing the same, a smile on her face. Zelda moves to also store her wings but a loud deep voice distracts her.
"What are you doing Zelda?"
Four heads snap up towards where the voice came from. Then four gulps are heard around the courtyard as they see King Rhoam standing at the top of the stairs to Zelda's room, frowning and looking concerned.
The King strides down the stairs as Zelda freezes, nervous about what is going to happen.
Link immediately drops to one knee and bows, not caring that the wings of his wingsuit are still attached to his arms or that the Master Sword is still strapped to Toothless's saddle.
Hiccup visibly pales, nervous that he might get in trouble for making the wingsuit. Seeing his nervousness, Astrid walks to his side, grapes his hand reassuringly and smiles at him.
Well aware that he has the attention of everyone in the vicinity-including the dragons, King Rhoam continues. "I understand that your friends ride dragons, but do you suddenly think that you are one?"
Hiccup smiles, muttering to Astrid. "He's got a point if you think about it. She'd make a good Golden Haired Light Dragon." Astrid stifles a chuckle, opting to elbow Hiccup in the stomach instead.
Zelda hears the exchange and blushes slightly before speaking to the King. "Father, I was using this wingsuit that Hiccup generously made for me. He also made the wingsuits that himself, Lady Astrid and Link wear."
Upon hearing this, King Rhoam's eyebrows rise slightly, observing the wingsuits and noticing the good quality of each one.
Seeing his slight hesitation, Zelda continues. "Now yes, I was flying/gliding when I've never done it before, but so was Link. Hiccup and Astrid were right beside us as well and they've been doing this longer than I have. Plus Toothless and Stormfly were behind us, ready to help if needed."
The King's eyebrows lower as he responds. "But you were still flying/gliding hundreds of feet above the ground with no experience! Don't you know how dangerous that is? You're the crown princess for Hylia's sake!"
Anger flashes in Zelda's eyes as she retorts. "Oh, don't give me the 'crown princess' crap, Father. Did you not hear what I just said? I was with two experienced people and two creatures who can naturally fly! I was as safe as I could be in the situation!"
Hiccup watches the argument with one hand covering part of his face, the argument easily reminding him of many of the arguments he got into with Stoick.
Seeing the sheer determination in his daughter's eyes, the King relents. "Alright, Zelda. I'll allow it, though only if you're with Chief Hiccup, Lady Astrid, Link, Toothless or Stormfly. Just please stay safe. You are all that myself and Urbosa have left of your mother."
A grateful smile grows on Zelda's face as she responds. "Thank you Father." The King smiles and turns around, walking back inside.
"Wait, you did what, Astrid?!"
Astrid smirks at Zelda's astonishment as she replies. "I had Stormfly lift their entire hut into the air, and fly it over to a sea stack several miles off the coast of Dragon's Edge. We set it down there and flew back to the Edge."
Zelda almost falls off her chair due to laughing at Astrid's story. Hiccup has a grin on his face and even Link is smiling. Managing to calm herself, Zelda speaks again. "What did they do after that?"
"Well, they never pranked us on Loki Day again, and somehow, they got their hut back to the Edge," the blonde warrior responds.
Hiccup, Astrid, Zelda, and Link are sitting in the gazebo in Zelda's courtyard, back in their normal outfits, enjoying a beautiful evening while eating their dinner and sharing stories. Toothless, Stormfly, and Terrako are also present, with the dragons eating fish next to the gazebo while Terrako is on the floor next to Zelda.
They are eating a meat and seafood fry that Zelda personally cooked. The dish consists of some fried beef, mushrooms, and bass alongside a small salad. Unlike Astrid, Zelda is a fantastic chef so the meal is delicious.
After taking a bite of beef, Zelda addresses Hiccup. "Come on, do you have any more great stories about the twins?"
Hiccup ponders for a moment before responding. "Well, one time they had their Zippleback, Barf and Belch, carve massive replicas of the twin's faces into a cliff face near the Edge. Surprisingly, the faces were very well detailed, but got destroyed, though I don't remember how."
Zelda laughs again, realizing that there is only one person in Hyrule that she knows of who would do such a thing. She leans over to Link and whispers. "Let's hope Master Kohga doesn't get that idea!" Link grins at the thought and chuckles.
However Astrid overhears this and speaks up. "Wait, who is this Master Kohga that I've heard mentioned several times?"
Zelda looks at Astrid before responding. "Master Kohga is the leader of the Yiga Clan. He's very obsessed with himself and the clan has undying loyalty to him."
Hiccup raises an eyebrow as he interjects. "Yiga Clan? That sounds more like a bad group."
Zelda chuckles as she replies. "Funnily enough, they used to be our enemies. Rebels of the Sheikah tribe working to revive Calamity Ganon. They tried to assassinate me several times before Ganon broke free, and almost succeeded twice. One of the times, Kohga himself almost killed me by disguising himself as Urbosa, though Urbosa saved me. The second time, his second in command did the attempt, but Link saved me."
Astrid's eyes widen as she speaks. "Wait, they tried and almost succeeded in killing you twice and you're now allied with them? What happened to change them?"
Zelda looks at Astrid before continuing. "The Yiga were allied with a crazy prophet who also wished to revive Ganon. After breaking free, Calamity Ganon sent four elemental phantoms to each of the Divine Beasts to kill each Champion and corrupt each beast. We were able to stop that and kill the phantoms, but it angered the prophet. He stole the souls of most of the Yiga Clan to resurrect the phantoms. Enraged at the slaughter of his underlings, Kohga cut ties with him and sought out my group at Fort Hateno. He pledged his allegiance there and has been an ally ever since, helping us to seal Ganon."
Hiccup voices an obvious question in response. "So now that they aren't trying to revive Ganon, what do the Yiga do now?"
Zelda chuckles as she responds. "That's where this turns funny. Since they aren't bad anymore, the Yiga have been busying themselves with, um…interesting tasks to say the least. I know that they went hungry while building a massive bronze statue of Kohga. I've seen the finished product and it's something to behold. They also have been recreating ties to the Sheikah and have been helping with some research of the relics. I've heard rumors that they've built something called the 'HOVERDOOM MK III' out of decommissioned Guardian parts."
Hiccup and Astrid both start snickering at the supposed creation's ridiculous name.
Zelda starts laughing as she continues. "You'll get a laugh out of this as well. The entire clan is addicted to Mighty Bananas. Like they refuse to eat anything that isn't a banana or banana flavored"
Hiccup and Astrid both hesitantly smile and raise an eyebrow at the unfamiliar name as Zelda explains. "Bananas are a slender slightly curved yellow fruit native to the Faron jungle. When cooked, they will make your attacks hit harder due to some protein in the fruit."
Ignoring Hiccup and Astrid's surprised looks, Zelda continues. "Anyways, shortly after the sealing of Ganon, some Yiga soldiers ventured to Gerudo Town to buy all the bananas on sale. After that succeeded, the clan got the brilliant idea to buy every last banana in Hyrule. It was pretty amusing to be honest. Many merchants made a nice profit and the Yiga got their bananas en masse."
Upon hearing this, Hiccup and Astrid burst out laughing. Amidst bursts of laughter, Astrid manages to get out "Wait, they controlled the entire banana supply? How did that go over?"
Also laughing, Zelda resumes the story. "Well about a week after taking over the banana supply, we heard that someone was stealing bananas. Some Yiga investigated and found a young kid taking the fruits. He liked bananas and stole them because he couldn't get them anywhere. After that, Master Kohga loosened the clan's control over bananas. He also sent a group of Yiga to start a banana farm in Faron, which was a great idea. That farm is one of the most successful in the kingdom."
Still laughing hard, Hiccup speaks up. "So let me get this straight, after taking control of the bananas, they found someone stealing and decided to loosen their hold on the supply. They do this by making a farm where they mass grow the fruit. Isn't that not loosening their hold at all, just adjusting it?"
Zelda considers his statement for a moment before nodding. "When you put it that way, that's true. They still control the banana supply."
Managing to calm herself, Astrid speaks again. "Wow, these Yiga guys and Master Kohga also sound like Ruff and Tuff. Absurd at times but also competent." Hiccup smiles as he thinks about Astrid's point before saying "Let's hope that Ruff and Tuff don't meet Master Kohga. That would be disastrous." Astrid, Hiccup, Zelda, and Link all laugh at that.
Calming herself, Zelda looks at Hiccup and Astrid, addressing them while smiling. "You know, the past few weeks with you have been really fun. I'm going to miss you guys when you return to Berk."
Hiccup smiles back as he responds. "Yeah, the past few weeks have been a blast. I'm also going to miss you when we go home."
Astrid winds her fingers around Hiccup's as she joins in. "I'm also going to miss this. Hyrule is beautiful and a nice change of scenery from Berk. Plus, spending time with you and Link is nice." turning to Link, she continues. "Link, you and Urbosa have given me the most challenging yet fun duels that I've had in a long time." The Hylian Champion smiles at the compliment and nods acknowledgement.
Holding his water mug, Hiccup speaks. "How about a toast?"
The others chorus agreement and grab their water mugs, holding them up.
"To friendship between Berk and Hyrule," Hiccup says. Astrid, Zelda, and Link repeat the toast before they touch their water mugs together then take a drink, all of them smiling.
Terrako suddenly whistles and Zelda looks down at the little Guardian. Terrako is pointing at the Sheikah Slate, on the table next to Zelda's plate. Realizing what the Guardian is suggesting, Zelda looks at Hiccup and Astrid. The princess blushes as she speaks. "Hiccup, Astrid, Terrako just gave me an idea. Astrid, remember the camera rune of the Sheikah Slate?" Astrid nods, understanding appearing in her eyes as Zelda continues. "Would you be up for having a picture of us taken, with 'us' meaning myself, you two, Link, Toothless, Stormfly, and Terrako?"
Hiccup and Astrid both nod before Hiccup responds. "Sure, we'd love to. But who will take the picture?"
Zelda looks around before noticing the royal guard at the base of the stairs to her room. "Clinton," she calls out.
The guard hears her and walks over, bowing before looking at Zelda.
"Good evening Princess," he says, then notices the others at the table and greets them too. "Evening, Lady Astrid, hello son. And you must be Chief Hiccup?" The question is directed at Hiccup who nods before Zelda continues. "Clinton, could you take a picture with the Sheikah Slate of myself, Link, Lady Astrid, Chief Hiccup, and the dragons, Toothless and Stormfly all together?"
The royal guard eagerly nods as he replies. "I'd be honored, Princess. Just show me how to operate the Slate."
Zelda gets up, followed by the others and they walk to the western edge of the courtyard. While Zelda shows Clinton how to take the picture, the others work out where to stand, but when Zelda comes over, she rearranges them. After a minute of shuffling, the group of six is posed, ready for the picture.
Astrid, Hiccup, Zelda, and Link all stand next to each other in a line with Toothless behind the Berkians and Stormfly behind the Hylians. All six smile as Clinton-smiling himself at the cute sight-takes several pictures.
Suddenly, Zelda gets an idea and voices it. "Clinton, do you mind one more, where we're on the dragons?"
Clinton chuckles in reply. "As many as you want, Princess."
Astrid hops onto Stormfly's saddle, holding out a hand for Zelda. Terrako runs over and jumps onto Zelda's shoulder as she grabs Astrid's hand and gets onto Stormfly. Terrako nestles into Zelda's lap, happily whistling. Meanwhile, Hiccup and Link get onto Toothless's saddle.
The two dragons move closer together and the Berkians, Hylians, and dragons smile again. Still smiling, Clinton takes several more pictures of the seven friends. Once he's done, Zelda jumps to the ground and accepts the Sheikah Slate back from the royal guard. He bows and returns to his post.
Beckoning to the others, Zelda walks to the edge of the courtyard and sits down, legs dangling over the long drop to a deep pond below. Hiccup, Astrid, and Link sit down beside her while Toothless and Stormfly look over their shoulders. Zelda pulls up the pictures and shows them to her friends. Link smiles, Astrid nods approval while smiling, and Hiccup grins.
"That's beautiful," he says. "If I could get a physical replica of that, I would." Zelda smiles warmly at him as she turns off the Sheikah Slate and replaces it on her hip.
As they quietly sit and watch the sunset, Terrako starts whistling and playing a song.
The tune starts calm, yet curious, almost seeming like Hiccup's personality put into song form. The song then gains some energy with some rising and falling notes creating a heroic tune embodying Link's courage as the Hylian Champion. Next, the song turns to a gentle set of short notes sparse with long notes that captures Astrid's beauty and determination. Smiles appear on Zelda and Link's faces as the tune changes to the familiar notes of Zelda's Lullaby, a comforting medley befitting of the Hylian princess. Terrako's song then gains energy as the song reaches a climax, with several notes rising above the others in a medley that somehow perfectly captures the majesty of Hyrule Castle. After that, the tune goes to a short twice repeating series of sweeping notes before a crescendo followed by several more higher notes that trail out into a sweet medley with the whole part of the song after the castle portion emitting the feeling of flying through the sky on a dragon.
As Terrako finishes the song, Hiccup, Astrid, Zelda and Link's eyes are all tearing up at the beautiful medley. Not one of them cares as they let some tears fall.
Astrid scooches closer to Hiccup and they lean against each other, both moved at Terrako's music. Without knowing it, Zelda leans slightly on Link, causing the Hylian Champion to blush slightly, but he lets Zelda stay where she is. Upon realizing what she's doing, Zelda also blushes but doesn't move. Toothless and Stormfly snuggle up against the quartet, also having been moved by the little Guardian's tune.
For some time, Hiccup, Astrid, Zelda, Link, Toothless, Stormfly, and Terrako all stay where they are, quietly watching the sunset. Even once the sun has set and the stars have appeared, the seven of them stay where they are, enjoying each other's company and friendship.
Thus, the second act of 'A Breath of Hyrule' ends.
Notes for the chapter
Astrid relocating Ruff and Tuff's hut to a sea stack along with the twins carving their faces into a cliffside are seen in Race to the Edge
The whole Yiga buying all the bananas in Hyrule scheme is from Age of Calamity. It is detailed in several of Master Kohga's bonus heart quests
The tune that Terrako plays is a tune I came up with while writing this. It starts with Hiccup's theme, then Link's theme, then Astrid's theme, then Zelda's Lullaby, followed by the climax of the BOTW Hyrule Castle theme and finishes with the Test Drive climax from 'Once There Were Dragons'
Anyways, hope you enjoyed and see you in the next chapter:)
