A/N: This is something I came up with after watching the 1-5-23 episode of SVU. I read something about the friendship that was developing between Olivia and Kate Dixon. I don't know a whole lot about Kate other than what I read as I don't watch the original L&O. I am also including Ayanna Bell in this one but I don't watch Organized Crime either. There will be a second part to this. I don't own any of the characters.
Sisters in Blue
Olivia had had a rough last few days. It was finally Friday night and Noah was still at the McCann's, at least through the weekend. She had called Hank but he didn't answer, so she figured he was busy with a case. Fin, Velasco and Muncy had already gone home for the night. Olivia was finishing up and her protection was waiting to escort her home. She got her stuff and was about ready to leave the Precinct when Kate and Ayanna came in.
"Hey."
"Hey, ladies."
"Do you wanna grab dinner and drinks with us?"
"Can we do takout and meet at my apartment? I have wine."
"Sure. Does Chinese work?"
"That's fine."
Olivia told them what she wanted and then they left. Olivia went home, while Kate and Ayanna ordered and went to get the food. Once they got the food, they went to Olivia's. When they got to Olivia's they went up and knocked on the door. Olivia answered but she was Face Timing with Noah. They unpacked everything and then Olivia ended her call. They got food and wine and sat in the living room.
"How's he doing?"
"He's still upset by what happened. He didn't want to go to Woodstock but he's having fun. My other option would have been to send him to Chicago to stay with Hank but things have been crazy for him. I tried calling him before I left the Precinct but I didn't get him, so he must be working on a case."
"Does he know what happened?"
"I called him after Fin brought me home from the hospital and we talked for a while."
"How do the two of you manage long distance?"
"Honestly, it hasn't been easy but I think the fact that it is long distance has made me work harder at it. He's the one that kept me sane after Ed Tucker's suicide and he has been supportive of me dealing with Elliot being back in my life."
"How's that going?"
"He pretty much hasn't spoken to me since the case we all worked on together. I'm still hurt from when he just up and left without a word. For him to say I was the reason he left in the first place doesn't sit well with me. He got pissed when I told him I was with someone. I'm surprised I haven't heard from him with this."
"He's undercover again."
"As long as he doesn't show up here while he's drugged."
"I appreciated the call, since technically he's my problem and not yours. He could have put your or Noah in danger if someone had followed him. I told him he knows better than that and if something like that ever happens again, there will be consequences."
"It seems like he listens to you."
"He does what he wants though."
"He's always been that way."
"I'm sure he'll never change."
"Probably not."
"How do you feel about Elliot?"
"I loved and cared about him when we worked together all those years ago and maybe at one point, a part of me had hoped he would have left his wife for me but I knew that wouldn't have happened because his family was everything to him. I cared for Kathy too and the kids have always meant a lot to me. I still love and care for him now but he needs to accept that am happy with someone else. I don't think he really realizes how much he hurt me when he left. Every time I want to talk about things, he doesn't. When I tell him he has PTSD, he tells me I don't know what I am talking about. Actually, I do."
"Does he know about William Lewis?"
"Not yet."
"I'm not makin' excuses for him but I've told him that he needs to deal with his loss. He basically says he deals with it in his own way."
"Which will only make him angrier."
"That is one of the things I have told him he needs to work on."
"His marriage was never all that great in the first place and a lot of that was because she was jealous of how close we were. She referred to me as his work wife, which I probably was. She filed for a divorce but it was never finalized and she ended up pregnant with Eli. I don't know if they worked on things after he left SVU. I would have expected them to have divorced a long time ago. Do you know what happened with him prior to him leaving SVU?"
"Yeah. He shot and killed a teenage girl in the Squadroom, who had shot and killed the man who had raped and killed her mother but she had also killed a Nun as well."
"Right. Captain Cragen had told me that Elliot had put his papers in. Years later, I asked Ed about had happened with Elliot putting his papers in. All he said was that he came to him with his gun and badge and said he was done. Ed said he told him to contact me to at least let me know what was going on and Elliot apparently said he couldn't do that. Now I know why."
"If he continues to give you a hard time, let me know."
"Thanks."
"No problem. I'm still not sure how I feel about Noah's half-brother."
"How did that come about?"
"He found him on one of those ancestry sites. When I met Connor's parents, they first said they wanted to know about his biological father but then they decided they didn't. Did I really want to tell these people that Connor and Noah's father was a pimp and sex trafficker or that his mother was probably one of his victims? Not really. I still haven't told Noah yet. Hank said he'd help me talk to Noah and so did Trevor Langan."
"It sounds like Hank takes his dad duties seriously."
"He's trying to be a better dad to Noah than he was to his own son."
"How old is his son?"
"He would have been 30. He died in 2016 right after Hank's grandson Daniel was a year old. He's still pretty close to his daughter-in-law but the moved to Scottsdale, Arizona after Justin died. We went out there for Christmas when Noah was out of school."
"Oh, wow! What's Hank like?"
"Personality-wise, he's a lot like Elliot but with less ego."
"I know that ego all too well."
"I'm sure you do. Unlike Elliot, Hank knows about William Lewis and my past relationships."
"Elliot doesn't know about you and Tucker?"
"He knows I was with someone named Ed but that's all."
"How long have you and Hank been together?"
"We got together 6 months after Ed and I broke up, so it's been 4½ years and we've known each other just over 8 years. We met when we worked on a case together. His behavior in the Interrogation Room was a lot like Elliot's and I had actually threatened to arrest Hank if he pulled that again. He behaves for me no questions asked. I should have tried that with Elliot when he went off on the guy in the Interrogation Room after what happened to Kathy. Hank and I slept together several times and spent Valentine's Day of 2015 together. It was just casual though. During Greg Yates' trial, Yates represented himself and was saying things about Hank. It really bothered me but I wasn't sure if that meant I was starting to fall for him. He seemed ok when I told him I was seeing Ed. After Ed and I broke up, a part of me regretted it but another part of me wondered if I secretly didn't want the relationship to work because I was in love with Hank. I had run into Ed a couple months later and he said he knew I had been fighting my feelings for Hank and I needed to talk to him. I kept putting it off and then I went to Chicago. The rest is history. We've discussed going to the next step but at the moment, he doesn't have someone he trusts enough to take over the unit. The one he was hoping would take over ended up leaving to help the military track down drug cartels in Bolivia."
"That sounds something our unit would do but here."
"Hank's unit does what each of our units do. They deal with homicides, drugs, kidnappings, trafficking, rapes, mobs, gangs. Hank was with the Gang Unit before he headed Intelligence. A few years ago, there was this mysterious bacterial infection that had hit Chicago and his unit searched for the person that started the whole thing. They ended up taking the guy out."
"I do remember hearing about that."
"Me too."
There was a knock at the door, so Olivia went to get it. It was Erin.
"Erin!"
"Hey. You ok?"
"I'm a little better than I was I guess. Come on in."
"Thanks. I brought ice cream."
"Great! You haven't heard from Hank lately, have you?"
"I talked to him last week. He knew I was gonna be gone. Why? When was the last time you talked to him?"
"The night I came home from the hospital but I haven't heard from him since. It bothers me when I don't hear from him."
Erin walked in and took her coat and boots off.
"Erin, this is Lieutenant Kate Dixon from Homicide and Sergeant Ayanna Bell from Organized Crime. Kate and Ayanna, this is Erin Lindsay."
"You're the one with the FBI."
"That's me. Hank is the dad I never had and Liv is more of a mom to me than my own mother ever was. It's nice to meet you both."
"You too."
"She brought ice cream."
"Ooooooh!"
"Do you want some food? We have plenty."
"Sure."
Erin put the ice cream in the freezer and got a plate. She got some food and a glass of wine before joining the others.
"When did you get home?"
"A couple hours ago."
"Where were you?"
"DC but that's nothing new. Where's Noah?"
"With the McCanns."
"I have a feeling this is gonna bite you in the ass just like the thing with Sheila did. So far, they've come up clean but I don't trust them."
"Hank says the same thing. I didn't know what else to do. I would have loved to have sent him to Chicago but things have been crazy for Hank since Jay left."
"I know they have. Hank said he's worried about Upton. Honestly, I don't blame her for throwing herself into her work because I probably would have done the same thing if it had been me. I basically left without discussing it with Jay but we were broken up at the time. He should have discussed it with his wife before he made that decision. I still care about Jay and we worked things out after I came here. I also know bad the drug cartels are in South America or really anywhere south of the U.S. Border. I just hope he's safe."
"I'm sure he can take care of himself."
"I'm sure he can. Do you not have Lucy anymore?"
"No. She's now working for another family. I could have had him stay with Rollins but I don't have her to lean on as much anymore and you were out of town."
"How have you been without having Rollins at work?"
"It sucks but I know why she did it. She's been dealing with a lot since she was shot."
"That's understandable."
There was another knock at the door, so Olivia got up again to answer it. This time it was Amanda.
"You're here!"
"I am. I got a call from Fin tellin' me I needed to get my ass over here to see you."
"You gotta love him!"
Amanda hugged Olivia and then she came in. She got some food and joined everyone else. Olivia then told her what had happened.
"Damn! I miss you but I don't miss the job. My hours are more normal, so I can actually spend time with the girls."
"Are they with Carisi?"
"He's still workin', so they're actually spendin' the weekend with Serafina and Dominick Sr."
"Oh, that's right. We have that trial coming up next week."
"Have you talked to Voight?"
"I talked to him after Fin brought me home from the hospital but I haven't heard from him since. I know he's been busy but I really need him right now. Kate helped out with a case as a sign language interpreter and she and Ayanna asked if I wanted to have dinner with them. I don't get to do this very often."
"None of us do. It's nice to spend time with other women who do the same thing I do."
"I agree. We should do this more often."
"We should."
"I think so too."
"I hate to ask this but have you heard from Stabler at all with this?"
"Nope. He's basically been pissed at me ever since I told him I was with Hank. Ayanna said he's undercover again anyway."
"That's good thought, right?"
"As long as he doesn't show up here like he did the last time. I told Hank about that because I tell him everything and he was not too happy about it."
"Does he know Stabler confessed his love for you?"
"Yep. Hank knows absolutely everything."
The door opened and Hank came in.
"Hey, Honey!"
"Hey."
"I didn't know you were coming."
"After I talked to you the other night, I knew I needed to be here. I left Upton in charge but I also told Platt to keep an eye on things."
Hank took his coat and boots off and went over to kiss Olivia.
"Nice black eye, Babe. Does it hurt?"
"A little bit but my back hurts more though. It looks worse than it really is."
Hank kissed Olivia's eye and then he kissed Erin on top of her head.
"This is Lieutenant Kate Dixon from Homicide and Sergeant Ayanna Bell from Organized Crime. Ladies, this is Sergeant Hank Voight from Chicago's Intelligence Unit."
"It's nice to meet you both."
"You too."
"You hungry?"
"Yeah. I'll get it as soon as I drop this bag off in the bedroom."
Hank took his bag to the bedroom.
"He's a sexy one and that voice makes him even sexier."
"I agree and I'm not even into men."
"He's pretty amazing."
Hank came back, got some food and a beer and sat down.
"Where's Noah?"
"At the McCann's."
Hank shook his head.
"What else did you expect me to do?"
"I get it but as a cop, sometimes you don't make the best decisions regarding your kid. You sometimes trust people too much and then it comes back and bites you in the ass. You did the same thing with Sheila and look what happened."
"I'm aware of that but thank you for the reminder."
"I said the same thing. I've looked into the McCanns and so far, they have come up clean."
"I taught you well, kiddo."
"You sure did."
"You wanna come back and run Intelligence, so I can retire?"
"No. I'm happy with my job with the FBI. You don't trust Upton?"
"I do but I don't. After Halstead left, she became obsessed with this trafficking case we had that ended up involving Chief O'Neal's son. The Chief was in denial that his son was capable of doin' that. He ended up shooting Sean and killing himself. We thought Sean was dead but he wasn't. We got him to the hospital and now he's in prison. I get why Halstead left because these drug cartels need to be stopped before they get here to the major cities but there are just so many of them."
"I get why he left too. I did hear from him before he left Chicago for Bolivia and I told him that if he needed any info on any of these drug cartels to let me know."
"Good. Babe, I didn't mean to upset you."
"I know you didn't and I do know I don't make the best decisions sometimes. Lately I have felt like he would rather be with them than me."
"I know I need to be around more not just for him but for you too. I should have been here when all this happened to you."
"I wish you were too. You have no idea what was going through my head when that kid pulled a machete on me."
"I do know. I'm just glad you're ok."
"I'm better now that you're here."
"I'm sure Stabler has been your best buddy. I'm surprised he's not here."
"He hasn't spoken to me since I told him about us. Ayanna said he's undercover again, so I don't even think he knows."
"No, he does not. I told him if he shows up here while he's undercover again, there will be consequences because he knows better. That was obviously before he wasn't talkin' to you. It's hard to say with him sometimes. He'll do whatever he wants."
"He's always been like that."
"As long as he gets the job done."
"Which he does. If any of your cases involve sexual assault, I'm fine with him investigating it because he knows how to do it. Sometimes we get swamped and right now we've been helping the Bronx SVU close their cases."
"We just don't wanna step on SVU's toes."
"I'm good with it. There's really no reason to involve us."
"I'll keep that in mind."
"I enjoyed seeing what SVU does."
"I appreciate your help."
"Any time."
"Why are you helpin' the Bronx SVU?"
"Because Chief McGrath is a pain in my ass. He's worse than Dodds if that's even possible. He decides to pull this shit when I'm short-handed."
"Who's investigatin' what happened to you?"
"Duarte and the Gang Unit."
All Amanda could do was roll her eyes.
"I should have taken Noah to Chicago for a few days just to get away."
"I'm workin' on somethin' for Valentine's Day."
"Just us?"
"Yep. Erin, do you think you could stay with Noah?"
"I'll see."
"If she can't, he can probably stay with us."
"Ok, good. So, where are we going?"
"It won't be here or Chicago but that's all I'm tellin' you."
"You better not be planning to propose but that's kind of corny for Valentine's Day."
"What makes you think I'd want to do that?"
"So, you have no intentions of ever proposing?"
"I didn't say that."
Olivia got up and went to the bathroom.
"I thought you had a ring."
"I do but I'm just afraid she won't say yes until I decide I'm leavin' Chicago."
"Did you bring the ring?"
Hank got up and got the ring box out of his coat pocket. He then showed it to Amanda, Kate and Ayanna."
"That is beautiful."
"It sure is."
"Definitely."
Erin saw Olivia coming.
"Hide it. She's coming."
Hank closed the box and put it in his pocket. Olivia came back.
"I miss you, Amanda."
"I miss you too, Liv."
"Does everyone want ice cream?"
"Sure."
"Yeah, I'll have some."
"Me too."
"Sure, why not?"
Erin took the plates and went into the kitchen. She put the plates into the sink and then found some bowls and spoons. She got the ice cream out of the freezer and put some into each of the bowls. She then put chocolate syrup on top. Hank came into help her and he took a couple bowls out.
"Thanks for bringing the ice cream, Erin."
"No problem. Ice cream always makes me feel better when I've had a shitty day or sometimes week. If I'm by myself, I eat it right out of the container."
"Been there, done that."
"Same here."
"Me too."
"The girls and I do that all the time. Sonny made a comment about us doin' that but he drinks milk or juice right out of the container and I've seen him squirt the chocolate syrup into his mouth. I'm always like really?"
"Noah and I put the chocolate syrup and whipped cream into the ice cream container and eat it that way."
All Hank could do was shake his head.
"Have you talked to Olive lately?"
"Yeah. I talked to them last night. She and Daniel send their love. She said they may try to call you tomorrow."
"Ok. I should let Noah know you're here."
Olivia texted Noah and told him Hank was there.
"I'll see if I hear back from him tonight or not."
"If you had called, I could have come out here sooner."
"I know things have been crazy for you lately."
"They have but you and Noah are more important. I know I have some decisions to make concerning my job. Honestly, my heart really hasn't been in it since Al died. I knew Jay was gonna be the one that took over once Antonio went to Puerto Rico. Upton is good at what she does but before I am able to trust her enough to run the entire unit, she needs to get her head on straight. Right now she's the only Detective."
"If anyone gets it, I do. Fin hates being second in command. He never wanted it but I think he enjoys the higher pay scale."
"Amaro wanted to take the Sergeant's exam."
"Yeah, he did and Tucker said even if he had gotten a perfect score on the exam, he would have been overlooked for a promotion because of his issues."
"They have told me the same thing about Stabler. Sometimes I get the impression he thinks he's running the unit and not me."
"That really doesn't surprise me. Tucker hated both Amaro and Stabler and told me they were the reason he was always so hard on SVU. I started noticing a difference in Tucker after what I went through with William Lewis."
"Tucker didn't deserve what happened to him."
"No one does. He once charged me with murder."
"What?"
"Yeah, me too."
Olivia told Kate and Ayanna that story and then Amanda told them her story when she was charged with murdering her sister's boyfriend.
"At least Liv had a sexy lawyer."
"I did and now he's not even a Defense Attorney anymore."
"Does he like what he does now?"
"He does. When the time comes, I want him to handle the paperwork for Hank to officially adopt Noah."
"Is that what Noah wants?"
"Oh yeah. He and Hank love each other and Noah already calls him 'Dad'. I can't imagine anyone else being his dad."
"Did he and Ed get along?"
"They did but I never saw Ed as 'the one'. Noah took his death pretty hard though."
"Do you ever hear from his widow?"
"We meet for coffee once every couple months maybe. Like I said, I told Elliot I was in a relationship with someone named Ed but he doesn't know who. He wouldn't understand anyway. When we worked together, he was always acting jealous when I was dating someone. That's not really appropriate for someone who's married."
"No, it's not."
"I am in this relationship with Hank 100%. I love Hank more than I have ever loved anyone and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. No one, not even Elliot Stabler, will change the way I feel about him."
"I'm rootin' for you and Voight, Liv. I knew you've been in love with him for a long time."
"Thanks, Amanda. I'm really happy for you and Carisi."
"Who would have thought I'd be married before you? Certainly not me."
"You and Carisi don't have the obstacles that Hank and I do."
"We kind of did with our jobs, which is basically the reason I wanted to take the job at Fordham besides wantin' to spend more time with the girls. I've been dealin' with my PTSD since I was shot."
"Yeah, I know. I've been dealing with mine again these last few days too. I guess I need to call Dr. Lindstrom next week."
"How long has it been since you last saw him?"
"I started seeing him more regularly after Ed's death and once Elliot came back into my life. I talked to Dr. Lindstrom after I had gotten invited to Ed's retirement party because it had been so long since I had seen Ed face to face since the breakup and after he told me I needed to tell Hank how I felt about him. I wasn't sure how I was going to handle confronting him. I appreciated you, Fin and Carisi being there for me though. After what happened to Kathy and Elliot admitting his feelings for me, a part of me had a feeling Elliot would stop at nothing to break up my relationship with Hank. I had been honest with Hank about everything and Dr. Lindstrom had asked me that. I got upset when Barba defended Richard Wheatley and I still haven't really forgiven him for it yet even though I know why he did it. He pointed out that I seemed to forgive Elliot for leaving the way he did. Really, I haven't. I have mixed feelings about him being in my life and a lot of unresolved anger towards him. Every time I want to talk, he doesn't. He doesn't want to deal with it. I did tell him that I was in a relationship with someone and that was after he showed up here to tell me that Kathy had written that letter. I gave him a couple days to make sure he was functioning and I told him. I've told Elliot numerous times that I will support him the best I can to help him deal with his loss. After I told him about Hank, he basically said I obviously didn't mean what I said about helping him deal with his loss. I said I did. I told him Hank wouldn't have thought twice about tossing him out on his ass when he just shows up at my apartment at that time of night to tell me about that stupid letter."
"I still wouldn't."
"I don't doubt that for a minute. If you had been there, you probably would have."
"You better believe I would have especially since we don't see each other as much as we want and we always make the best of our time together. It's my job to protect my family. That's you, Noah, Erin, Olive and Daniel but I also consider my squad and your squad, which still includes Rollins, as family."
"Aw! Thanks."
"They're all my family too. I agree. Our time together is very precious to me. While a part of me hopes Noah wants to come home early to see you, another part of me just wants to be able to spend some quality time alone with you. Thank you for being here."
"You're welcome. There is no other place I would rather be right now. We'll figure things out eventually."
"I know we will. We've lasted this long."
"Yeah, we have."
"Are you divorced?"
"Widowed. She's been gone 13 years. I had said I never wanted to be put through that again because watching her die from cancer was a lot to deal with."
"I can imagine. What kind did she have?"
"Ovarian. She had surgery and chemo. Just seein' her get weaker and weaker was heartbreaking. My son was very close to his mother but we weren't all that close when she was alive. It got worse after she died. He started drinking and caused an accident. A kid ended up bein' paralyzed, so he ended up having to serve time in prison not only because of the DUI but because he was underage. After Camille's death, I got angrier and for the longest time, I was never good with dealing with my feelings. After Justin was released from prison, I told him he needed to get a job but he kept getting mixed up with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble. I drove him to the Army Recruitment Center and told him I'd see him in 4 years. His girlfriend showed up on my doorstep pregnant. After she told him about the baby, I gave him his mother's engagement ring and told him to make an honest woman out of her. Being in the Army and becoming a father shaped him up. He had finally gotten his act together and he got killed helping a friend. I lost my dad when I was young, so I know what my grandson is goin' through. I thought burying my wife was hard, burying my son was even worse. I've done some things that I'm not too proud of but I am trying to be a better person and not get so angry. Olivia and I talked after I lost Justin and she was actually the one that told me I needed to deal with my feelings. I never expected to fall in love again. Erin was one of the few people who knew how I really felt about Olivia."
"I knew it before you both did. We all did."
"Yep. Exactly. We were all more than a little shocked when we found out about you Liv and Tucker."
"Sorry for your loss."
"Thanks. After Justin's death, Olive wanted to give me the engagement ring back but I told her to give it to Daniel someday."
"That was a good idea."
"This is actually the one relationship I have been in that doesn't cause problems for my job since I technically don't have to disclose anything. Anyone else I'd have to."
"It was over 6 months before we disclosed. I wasn't sure how to tell you, honestly."
"It was a little obvious that you two had feelings for each other especially after your outburst after he went to the DA's office. I may not see you every day but at least you've kept in touch with me."
"I told you I wouldn't do that."
"It didn't take Amaro 10 years either. Everything just seems so off with the squad now. The only person there that I can really confide in now is Fin and sometimes the less he knows, the better off he is. I know I wasn't the easiest person to get along with when we first met."
"No, you really weren't. I had heard so much about you and it was an honor to be able to work with you. I know at that point, Stabler had just left and you were hurt by that. Honestly, Liv, since I've known you, this is the happiest I have seen you. I'm glad you were my boss and I know I got more chances than I deserve at times. I'm glad to be able to call you a friend. I think our relationship got better after I had Jesse."
Both Olivia and Amanda had tears running down their cheeks.
"You're right. This is the happiest I have ever been. I've never really had that many female friends especially on the job. I was pretty close to Alex Cabot when she was our ADA and I'm pretty close to Melinda but none of the other women that have been a part of the squad and I were ever particularly close. That is until you came along. You were there with what happened with Lewis and knew what I went through with Noah. Not just with Johnny D but with Sheila. Erin and I have had a special relationship from the moment we met but she's more like a daughter to me now. I'm also glad I'm establishing friendships with Kate and Ayanna now too. I used to be able to tell Elliot anything but after he just up and left, not anymore. Whether he wants to be or not, that person at work is Fin. Outside of work, that's Hank. If I have a shitty day, which I seem to have a lot lately, Hank and I Face Time and I vent to him about whatever is bothering me."
"It's good to have someone you can do that with. You can do that with me now too if you want."
"Same with me."
"I appreciate that. Thank you."
"I should probably head home."
"Me too."
"Yeah, me too. The girls are probably already asleep."
"Same here. I have a meeting in the morning anyway."
Everyone got up and got their shoes and coats.
"Hank, it was nice meeting you."
"You too."
"Olivia, call if you need anything."
"I will. Same for both of you."
"Erin, it was nice meeting you too."
"Likewise."
Kate and Ayanna both left.
"Maybe you, Carisi and the girls can come for dinner some night."
"I'll check with him and let you know."
"Ok."
Olivia gave Amanda a hug.
"Love you."
"Love you too. Good to see you, Voight."
"You too."
"I'll walk out with you, Amanda."
"Ok."
Erin hugged both Hank and Olivia and then she and Amanda left. Olivia locked up and then they put the trash in the garbage and the dishes and glasses in the dishwasher. Hank started it before he and Olivia went into the bedroom. They got ready for bed and made love before they fell asleep in each other's arms.
