A/N: I'm sure most of you have seen or heard by now that Richard Belzer passed away over the weekend, so this is just something I came up with. This chapter includes past and present SVU characters. Hank and Olivia have been married since after Noah was kidnapped by Grandma Sheila. Everyone but Erin is still with Intelligence. I don't own any of the characters.
Remembering Munch
Olivia couldn't believe it. She lost yet another person she was close to. First Ed and then Kathy. This time it was Munch. She had gotten a call from Don and she had contacted everyone else. She had been in contact with pretty much everyone anyway, since most of them had been at her and Hank's wedding. The only ones that weren't were Elliot and Brian but Elliot was back in New York anyway and Brian was still in the area as well.
They all knew he was out of the area and none of them were able to get there for whatever was being done. They knew he wouldn't have wanted a big fuss made anyway, so Olivia decided to invite everyone for dinner and they could remember him in their own way. She and Hank had set the date and time to have everyone over and coordinated it with everyone's schedules. Much to Olivia's surprise, everyone was able to make it, including the ones that were out of town. Hank made the dinner and everyone started arriving. Don, Elliot, Fin, Phoebe, Amanda, Sonny and the girls arrived first. They rang the bell and Olivia answered it.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"It just seems like I'm living in a nightmare these last few years. First Ed's suicide, then Kathy's death and now Munch. Munch. This seems so unreal."
"Yeah, no kidding."
Everyone came in and Olivia hugged all of them.
"Liv, I brought some alcohol."
"We have some too."
"I brought dessert."
"We did too. These are from my ma."
"Tell Serafina thank you."
"I will."
"Jesse and Billie, Noah is in his room trying to decide which movie the 3 of you are going to watch."
"Ok."
Jesse and Billie took their coats and shoes off and went up to Noah's room, while everyone else took their coats and shoes off as well. Elliot took the beer and wine into the kitchen and said hi to Hank and Phoebe and Sonny took the desserts into the kitchen.
"It smells good in here."
"Hank is making his chili and if you don't like chili, he is also making a baked mac and cheese. It's a mild chili but if you want it hotter, there's hot sauce. There is also onions, cheese, sour cream and oyster crackers to put on it. He doesn't put onions in the chili because Noah won't eat it. We have a salad too and there is also cornbread."
Elliot, Phoebe and Carisi came out of the kitchen with drinks and everyone, who didn't already have them, else got drinks as well. Then the others arrived. They all hugged Olivia and then came in. Everyone took their coats and shoes off and then everyone hugged everyone else. Then they went to get drinks.
"Thanks for callin' me, Liv."
"You're welcome. I know how close you and Munch were."
"Yeah, that was a shock. I wouldn't have missed this."
"Nick have you met Elliot?"
"No, I haven't."
"Nick, this is Elliot Stabler. Elliot, this is Nick Amaro."
"So, you're Stabler?"
"That's me. You must have been the partner she had after I left."
"Yeah, I was.
Olivia went into the kitchen to help Hank and then she went to get the kids. The 3 kids were going to be eating in the kitchen.
"Olivia, your home is gorgeous."
"Thanks, George. Oh, that's right, you haven't seen it before.
"I have not. This has been a rough last few years for you, hasn't it?"
"It has but Hank has been so amazing."
"Liv, I haven't see this either. It's nice."
"Thanks, Brian."
Olivia showed George and Brian around before everyone got their food and sat down.
"So, Stabler, what rock did you crawl out from? You couldn't have contacted Liv for a decade? Do you even know what she's been through? Do you even care?"
"I'm here, aren't I? And yeah, Cassidy, I do care. She told me everything thing she has been through. I shouldn't have done what I did. I know she can't quite forgive me and honestly, I probably don't deserve it. We're workin' on our friendship. Who's the one that left her right after what happened with that Lewis guy? I'm not sure what she saw in you."
"I'm just glad she didn't end up with you. You were always full of yourself and obviously nothing has changed."
"Ok, boys, please stop! This isn't the time or place for this."
"Sorry. This is about Munch."
"It's ok and yeah, it is. I'm sorry too."
"To Munch."
"To Munch."
Everyone raised a glass or bottle and toasted Munch. Then they ate.
"From everything I've heard about Munch, I wish I had gotten the chance to work with him. I met him at your wedding obviously."
"I'm probably the only one who didn't know him but Fin has told me a lot about him."
"Munch was one of the best. He had conspiracy theories about everything. He and Fin never made the workday boring. They bickered like an old married couple at times."
"They didn't cause me as much grief as you and Elliot did even though Munch never liked being in charge when I was off."
"And now I'm the one in charge. The only one I'm ok with is Fin but sometimes he doesn't like being left in charge either. I've never been too sure I could trust Velasco and Muncy does what she wants most of the time. Bruno from the Bronx SVU has expressed interest in coming to Manhattan SVU."
"I don't like McGrath either."
"Me neither. I miss Garland. I'd rather have to deal with Dodds again than McGrath."
"How long did it take Dodds to not blame you for what happened to his son?"
"Yeah, I know. I just don't like having a boss with a bad temper. I had not one but two partners that were hotheaded and I appear to get involved with men with the same problem."
"Munch had to bail me out that time."
"Yeah, he really looked out for you."
"I still think that guy deserved it."
"Yeah, he did."
"What happened?"
Nick told them what had happened.
"Damn! I would have done the same thing."
"Me too."
"I still can't believe you actually convinced Fin to take the Sergeant's exam."
"He liked the idea of more money."
"Damn straight!"
"I'm actually glad I gave up being a cop after I was told that I'd be overlooked for a promotion."
"Do you think Tucker would have said the same thing about Stabler bein' overlooked for a promotion."
"I asked him that once and he said there was no way in hell Stabler would have ever been promoted."
"I don't doubt that. I'd don't think I'd want to climb the ranks anyway. Although sometimes it would be nice to have more money to pay for Eli's college tuition."
"I still can't believe he's in college."
"Yeah, no kidding. That makes me feel kind of old."
"Elliot, how's your mother?"
"She's doin' ok. She's been showin' signs of dementia, so she's with Kathleen. I'm undercover quite a bit now, so I don't have the time for her that I should. When I'm not undercover, I spend more time with her. Thanks for askin', Huang."
"No problem. How are the kids dealing with the loss of their mother?"
"We're all takin' it one day at a time. It was a lot harder on Eli. I feel like an idiot for the way I just assumed Liv would want to be with me. I never expected her to be married."
"Honestly, I didn't think it would ever happen. I know I had feelings for Hank longer than I actually did and I think I secretly hoped my relationship with Ed didn't work out. Hank and I got together for good not too long after Ed and I ended our relationship and got married a year later. Ed wasn't the man he once was though."
"It sounds like it and I get it. As much as I didn't like the guy, he didn't deserved to die the way he did. If you weren't married, what do you think would have happened between us?"
"I won't deny I cared deeply for you because of how close we were as partner but I was hurt when you just up and left. A part of me doesn't want to ruin our friendship. The last thing I want to do is lose you as a friend again. You weren't there when all this stuff happened to me. Like what happened with William Lewis or when I adopted my son. I may never be able to completely forgive you."
"Yeah, I get that. Kathy and the kids told me I should have contacted you and honestly, I just couldn't. You have every right to be pissed at me. You and Hank both helped me get through losin' Kathy. It helped talkin' with someone who has actually been through it."
"I still love and miss Camille very much and Olivia understands that. I know she how much she misses Ed. My daughter-in-law is finally starting to date again and she worries what I think about it. I wasn't sure I wanted to get involved with anyone again but when Olivia came into my life and threatened to arrest me, I knew I loved her, even if she didn't feel the same way about me right away."
"Liv is kind of slow about that stuff sometimes."
"I am but thanks, Fin."
"No problem."
"Liv, I'm just sorry I brought Burton back into your life."
"Sometimes the past has a way of coming back and biting me in the ass. He had hoped to somewhat pick up where we left off but I happen to love my husband very much."
"Let's talk about Munch, which is why we're all here in the first place."
"Good idea."
"Remember the time Munch got shot in the ass?"
"I remember that."
"Me too. Whatever happened to Dana?"
"She's in jail."
"Really? Every time we worked with her, I got hurt."
"That's true."
"Wait, Munch was shot in the ass?"
Fin, Olivia, Don and Elliot told everyone else the story and everyone laughed.
"That's funny."
"It is."
"Remember when you sort of disappeared and had no contact with anyone for a few months?
"When I was working undercover for the FBI?"
"Yeah, that time. Munch said you were off somewhere having his baby."
"Oh, geez! The first time he met Hank, he pulled me aside and told me he thought this one was a keeper. He said deep down he always knew I'd find the right man for me but he didn't think it would be anyone with the NYPD. He was right."
"I know I wasn't with SVU for very long but Munch always made it bearable."
"He looked out for you too.
"Yeah, I know."
Brian ended up telling mostly everyone what had happened with him and why he couldn't handle being with SVU. Everyone was telling more Munch stories.
"Hank, this is delicious."
"Thanks."
Then Jesse came out of the kitchen.
"Mama, can I please try some chili?"
"Yeah, you might like it. It's almost like Sonny's pasta e fajioli but without the vegetables and noodles. I just put cheese, sour cream and oyster crackers in mine."
Amanda gave Jesse a taste of her chili.
"I like that."
"Ok. I'll give you a half a bowl, ok?"
"Ok."
"What do you want on it?"
"Like yours."
Amanda got Jesse a small amount of chili and put cheese, sour cream and oyster crackers on it.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Jesse took her bowl back into the kitchen. Noah came back in for more.
"Did you finish your homework?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Good."
Noah went back into the kitchen.
"I'm sure we'll see Billie next."
Then Billie came in.
"More mac and cheese please, Mama."
"I got it, Babe."
"Thanks."
Sonny got Billie some more mac and cheese.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Billie took her bowl and went back into the kitchen.
"They're so well behaved."
"Their table manners are actually pretty good at least when we're not at home. They both like feedin' the dog but it's more Billie that does it now."
"So, Rollins, how's your new job?"
"It's great. I love spendin' more time with the girls. I'm able to set my own schedule, so if I only wanna be there couple days a week, I can do that. I don't have to deal with a cranky ADA all day either. Just when he gets home."
"Who's cranky?"
"You when you get all worked up about a case."
Olivia couldn't help but laugh.
"You miss me, Rollins. Admit it."
"I never said I didn't miss you, Fin."
"We miss you too."
"When did you two get married?"
"Just before Christmas and then I left SVU not too long after that to teach Forensic Science at Fordham.
"Oh, wow! I'm happy for you on both things."
"Thanks. I miss my co-workers more than I miss the job. I love not havin' to get up during the night to go to a case."
"It took me a while to get used to that when I decided to retire. I don't miss it though. This is so much easier than tryin' to deal with long distance."
"I'm glad you decided to retire and come here."
"I wouldn't have done it for just anyone."
"I know that. I think the crankiest ADA we had was Barba."
"I'll second that."
"Thanks a lot."
"Do you miss it?"
"Sometimes. Carisi has definitely come a long way though."
"I agree. He used to annoy me but then I fell in love with him. Remember that creepy mustache he used to have?"
"Yes! That was awful."
"He still annoys me sometimes."
"Thanks a lot, Fin."
"No problem."
Carisi shook his head and Amanda rolled her eyes.
"Thanks for the compliment, Barba."
"Sure. Liv, do you ever hear from Peter?"
"He's back in Chicago and back to doing Intelligence's cases."
"Voight, do you hear from your former squad much?"
"Yeah, I do. I see Olinsky and his wife all the time. They came out here and spent Christmas with us. Al wants to retire and they're seriously thinkin' about leavin' Chicago and maybe comin' here. Antonio calls when he needs to pick my brain about an old case or he'll call Olivia if he needs her advice on a sexual assault case."
"Chicago doesn't have an SVU?"
"No. Intelligence deals with a lot. We had a sex trafficking case that had ties here, which is how Olivia and I met. The other case we had worked on with her squad was a serial rapist, who I guess SVU here had been tryin' to get 10 years before he hit Chicago."
"She did tell me about that one. I remember that guy. He killed someone in your unit or somethin'?"
"Yeah. She was the administrative person, who took calls for us. She was abducted and brought here. She and Erin had gotten pretty close and were roommates."
Hank finished telling some of them about the case with Nadia. The kids had gone up to Noah's room to watch their movie.
"They just went upstairs."
"We'll be here a while then. At least it's not a school night."
"You could always let them spend the night."
"We do have pajamas in the car for them. I wouldn't mind a child free night. We don't have those very often."
"No, we don't."
"How's Frannie?"
"She's great."
"Nick, how are the kids?"
"They're great for teenagers."
"I can hardly wait for that. He's already giving me a hard time. He's a lot better for Hank though. Munch told Noah once to always question authority."
Everyone started laughing. Hank had his arm on the back of Olivia's chair.
"He didn't."
"Oh, yeah. He did."
"Does he?"
"Sometimes but he knows better and he doesn't do it with Hank."
"Does he have any recitals coming up?"
"He's got one coming up in another month. It's just before he goes on Spring Break. I'll send the video to you."
"Thanks. I always enjoy seein' him dance. You plannin' to go anywhere?"
"We're heading to Arizona to see Olive and Daniel. The boys have the same break but since they came out here last year, we're going out there this year. Olive wants to save up her time, so we'll get to spend time with Daniel, while she's at work."
"I decided we're goin' to take the boys to Disneyland."
"I know we had talked about it but nothing was definite."
"The boys have both been wantin' to go again but we've mostly just been to Disney World. There's more to do in the LA area. We've already seen the Grand Canyon."
"Well, ok then."
"Let me know when and I'll take some time off and meet you. I'll see if I can get Zara for the weekend."
"That sounds like I plan. Is Erin going too?"
"No. I already asked her and she said she'll be gone that week. We will leave here the Friday he gets out of school and fly to Phoenix. We'll stay there one night and then fly to LA from there. I got the passes for Disney for Monday and Wednesday. We can do Knott's Berry Farm, Universal and maybe Magic Mountain."
"The Hollywood Walk of Fame too?
"We can put that on the schedule."
"Maybe we should think about that too. That's when I'm off."
"We could probably arrange somethin'."
"That would be fun."
"Yeah, it would."
"No one asked me if I wanted to go."
"That's a laugh. You never want to go anywhere."
"I do now, Baby! Can't we shut things down for that week?"
"No."
"Aw, man! You're no fun. Who would handle our cases if Carisi is off?"
"Probably Ms. Maxwell. If not, then probably Jack McCoy."
"I don't miss being an ADA. That's for sure."
"Yeah, me neither."
"I definitely don't miss being a Defense Attorney."
"Langan, do you like what you're doing now?"
"Yeah. I enjoy bringing families together."
"Munch once asked me if I had a thing for Langan. I didn't really know what to say. He did represent me when I was being charged for a murder I didn't commit and he helped me when I adopted Noah. He turned out to be a good guy after all."
"Did he ever ask you out?"
"No."
"I think you two would have made a cute couple but you and Hank do make a cute couple. You definitely seem like you're both madly in love with each other."
"We are. Hank is definitely the love of my life. I don't think I could have seen anyone else as Noah's dad."
Olivia kissed Hank.
"We're glad you're happy and I know Munch was happy for you too."
"At the wedding, he said he never would have believed it if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes. He also said he saw how happy I was being a mom that time he stayed with Noah."
"I never would have believed it either if I hadn't been there. I've been there for you through most of your relationships."
"Yes, Fin, you have."
"I would have been ok if you had gotten together with Langan but I knew you had feelings for Voight."
"It was obvious during the case with Yates that you had feelings for Voight. The way you two were lookin' at each other at the bar after the trial."
"Her reaction when Yates was accusin' Voight of doin' that stuff to Nadia. I was sittin' right next to her. She was pissed."
"No shit!"
"Thank you all for your input. I'm very happy with my decision. The best thing I ever did for myself besides marrying Hank was adopting my son. Although sometimes I wish I was at least 10 years younger, so I could have experienced carrying a child just once."
"Who were you with 10 years ago? Anyone promising?"
"I was with Brian then. We broke up because he didn't want marriage and a family. The only person I've been with that I would even consider having a kid with would be Hank."
"Did you love Tucker?"
"I did but I didn't see him as the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I don't know that I would have ever gotten involved with anyone within the NYPD again. Hank had always intended to retire when he made the choice to move here. He may have retired at 55 but he had over 25 years in. I'll probably continue working until I'm 62, which is now only 7 years away."
"So, basically by the time Noah is ready to go off to college, you'll be done."
"Pretty much. Unless they want me to retire sooner. Some days are better than others. I would love to be able to spend time traveling with my husband."
Everyone continued talking and then they had dessert. Olivia and Amanda went up to check on the kids and took dessert up for them. Amanda asked the girls if they wanted to spend the night with Aunt Liv and Uncle Hank and they said they did. The two of them went back downstairs and Sonny went to get their pajamas out of the car. Once he came back in, Amanda went back up and the girls got ready for bed. Then she came back down.
"What are they watchin' anyway?"
"They picked the Wizard of Oz."
"One of his favorites."
"Exactly."
"Jesse has seen it but I don't think Billie has yet. She'll probably be asleep before it's over."
"Yeah, no doubt."
Melinda looked at her phone.
"I need to go. I'm on call."
"Thank you so much for coming."
"You're welcome. It was nice to be able to remember Munch."
"It was."
"I should head out too. This was a good idea, Liv."
"Thanks, El."
"We should do it again."
"Maybe we will."
Hank went to get Elliot and Melinda's coats, while they got their shoes on. Then they both left. Everyone started getting ready to leave. Olivia told Nick and George that they'd have to get together again before they left and they both agreed. Everyone hugged Olivia and Hank and then they went home or to their hotel. Amanda and Sonny had checked on the girls before they left. Jesse and Noah were still watching the movie but Billie was already out like a light. They both kissed Billie's forehead and then kissed Jesse before they headed home. After everyone was gone, Hank and Olivia cleaned up and started the dishwasher before heading upstairs. They looked in on the kids. Noah and Jesse were asleep and the movie was over but the TV hadn't been shut off yet. They shut the TV and DVD player off and made sure the kids were covered before then they went to their bedroom to get ready for bed. Once they were both ready for bed, they got into bed.
"Well, tonight went well."
"Yeah, it did. I still sense that Elliot is still jealous of us."
"I'm sure he is but he admits he shouldn't have assumed that we'd somehow get together now that he was all of a sudden back in my life and single. He's trying. I meant what I said. I don't think I could see myself with anyone but you and I do love you more and more every day."
"I love you too and I know he's trying."
"I'm glad we got to spend time with everyone and got to remember Munch."
"That's a good thing."
"Yeah, it is."
Hank and Olivia started kissing and then they fell asleep in each other's arms. The next morning, they woke up and the girls were in with them. Hank got up first and made breakfast for all of them and then once they were all ready to go, they took the girls home. They made arrangements to get together with Nick and George for dinner that night. Olivia told Nick she would let him know when they'd be in LA.
Reviews are appreciated. I may eventually do a related chapter about them going to Disneyland.
