A/N: This was a request from a guest reviewer. It mentions parts of the Season 10 finale of Chicago PD, the Season 8 finale of Chicago Med, the Season 24 finale of SVU and the Season 3 finale of Organized Crime (which I actually watched because of what happened to Olivia). For this, what happened to Mouch in the Season 11 finale of Chicago Fire never happened. Hank and Olivia are recently married but still long distance and Olive has been remarried for 3 years or so. I don't own any of the characters except my own. There will be a second part to this.
Critical – Part 1
Hank had gone into the Beck's home looking for Ruzek. Callum was there and had taken Hank's gun and vest from him before shooting him in the chest. Samantha had thrown his phone down the basement stairs, so he couldn't call for help. She and Callum left the house and went to find Richard. For now, Hank was conscious but in a lot of pain. Adam and Kim had been looking around the property for them before going into the house and saw Hank's SUV.
"Looks like Voight is here."
They announced themselves and then Adam kicked the door down.
"CHICAGO PD! IS ANYONE HERE?"
"HELP!"
They found Hank.
"Sarge, you ok?"
"No."
"50-21 Eddie. I need an ambo at my location. Officer down with a gunshot wound to the chest."
Adam had taken his shirt off to put pressure on Hank's wound.
"Phone."
"Where is it?"
"Samantha took it and threw it someplace."
"Adam, you got this?"
"Yeah."
Kim went to look for Hank's phone. She called it and heard it ringing. Once she got it, she took it to Hank.
"I found it."
"Call Olivia and Erin. Make sure they know I love them and the rest of the family."
"Got it, Sarge."
Just as Kim was about to make the call, Sylvie and Violet arrived. They got what they needed and came inside. They removed Adam's shirt and cleaned Hank's wound. They put a pressure bandage on it and he ended up needing a chest tube as well.
"Kim, I'm goin' with him."
"Ok. I'll meet you there. I need to call Olivia and Erin."
"Ok."
They put Hank on the gurney and put him in the ambo. Adam got in and they left for Med. Kim called Olivia first. Olivia and Elliot were at the Urgent Care in Ohio having their injuries checked out when Olivia's phone rang.
"Hey, Kim."
"Hey. Voight was shot. It looks pretty bad."
"Where was he shot?"
"In the chest. He's already lost a lot of blood. He was conscious when we got to him and he wanted me to call you and Erin. He said to make sure to tell you that he loves you, Erin and the rest of the family."
"Thank you. I appreciate the call. I'm going to see if I can get there as soon as I can. Tell him we love him too."
"Ok, I will."
Olivia hung up and she was in tears. Elliot knocked on the doorframe.
"Hey, you ok?"
"No, actually, I'm not. I just talked to one of the people in Hank's unit. He was shot in the chest and she said it looks pretty bad. I need to get to Chicago."
"Aren't you supposed to be resting?"
"Probably but I'm not going to be able to concentrate on anything."
"Then I'm goin' with you."
"I need someone to stay with Noah."
"You don't need to be by yourself either."
"Just don't get any ideas."
"I've accepted that you're with Hank and you're happy. I wanna be here for you as a friend. I owe it to you for the 10 years I was gone."
"Ok. I'll call Rollins and see if Noah can stay with them."
"I'll make the reservations."
Olivia called Amanda to see if Noah could stay with them, while Elliot called to make the reservations for the flight. The doctor released both of them.
"There's a flight in a couple hours, so I booked it. Is Amanda ok with Noah stayin' with them? If there's a problem, I can call Kathleen."
"Yeah, she's fine."
"Ok."
They left for the airport.
"I made a reservation at a hotel for me but I'm assuming you're stayin' at Hank's right?"
"Yep."
They arrived at the airport, got checked in and went through security before heading to the gate. Olivia's phone rang, so she answered it. It was Sharon asking for the ok to take him to surgery. She said it was fine and asked what was going on. Sharon told her that Hank had coded in the ambulance. She told Sharon she would be there as soon as she could and it was ok to let the ones in the squad or Trudy know how things were going until she or Erin got there. Sharon made a note and then they hung up. Olivia's phone rang right away. It was Erin.
"Hey."
"Hey, Mom. I'm at the airport and the flight leaves soon."
"Elliot and I were in Ohio helping with a case, so we're both heading to Chicago."
She told her what happened and Erin told her what Kim had told her.
"Are you telling me, a kid younger than my son shot Hank?"
"That's exactly what I'm saying. I couldn't believe it either. So, you're ok with your injury?"
"Yeah. My ass and hip hurt though but I need to be in Chicago. Sharon Goodwin called to get an ok to do the surgery. She also said he coded in the ambulance. I told her to keep his squad or Trudy informed as to what was going on until we get there. After I was shot, all I could think about was being with my husband and now that may not ever happen again."
"I would have said the same thing. Don't think like that. He's a stubborn SOB."
"Yeah, I know. Should I have made that decision? Do I even have Power of Attorney?"
"I don't even know that he changed anything yet but I'm fine with you making the decision because you're his wife."
"Does he even want to be connected to machines?"
"That I don't know. Camille didn't want that. Justin was never coming back. Olive wanted to let him go but Hank wasn't so sure. If it comes to that, we'll make that decision as a family."
"I'm not ready to be a widow yet, Erin."
"I know. I don't want to lose him either. I called Olive. She said she and Daniel will come out once Daniel gets out of school or if Charlie wants to come, it may not be until tomorrow. She's not sure she wants to bring Ashley, so she was going to call Carol and Paul to see if they could take her. She said she'd be ok if Daniel missed school for a day or so."
"I wouldn't be opposed to Noah missing it either."
"Mark has a flight at 6."
"Would he mind Noah tagging along?"
"He actually asked, so I told him to go ahead and book a seat for Noah just in case."
"That's perfect. I'll contact Amanda and have her take him straight home to get packed and Mark will pick him up at what? 4:30?"
"That should be fine. I'll call Mark and let him know."
"Ok. Are you flying into O'Hare?"
"Yeah."
Erin told her when her flight arrived and Olivia said hers was around the same time.
"I'll meet you in Baggage Claim."
"Ok."
"Did you get a car? I completely forgot."
"Hold on."
"Ok."
"El, did you get a car?"
"No."
"No."
"Call Platt and see if she or someone else can come get us."
"Ok. Tell Mark thanks for bringing Noah."
"I will. I need to call him and then the plane should be boarding soon."
"Ok. Love you."
"Love you too."
Olivia hung up and then she called Amanda to tell her to take Noah home to pack. Mark was picking him up by 4:30. After they hung up, she called his school and said he would be out for the rest of the week. After she hung up with the school, she called Trudy. Trudy said someone would be there to get them at the airport. Then she hung up again.
"Sorry."
"That's ok. Can I ask you somethin'?"
"Sure."
"How do you and Hank make it work long distance when Kathy and I could barely make it work in the same house?"
"It hasn't been easy but this relationship has made me work a lot harder. We try to talk everyday but if I'm stuck working on a case, I'll let him know to call Noah. Our weekends together are ours. When Hank comes to New York, Fin knows not to bother me unless absolutely necessary and Hank tells his group the same thing. When Hank had to put his second in charge in rehab for an addiction to pain meds, he needed time to be able to trust Jay Halstead enough to take over. The two of them never really saw eye to eye. Jay and Erin were partners and also involved. Jay blamed Hank for Erin leaving Chicago and joining the FBI here. This was even before Hank knew she was his daughter. When Jay resigned, went back into the Rangers and then went to Bolivia to help catch the drug cartels, it became a major setback for us because Hank was planning to retire by the end of last year. He extended it another 6 months, so that pushed it up to the end of June. We were already planning to get married when we did, which is why we stuck to that. He needed to be sure Upton was ready to take over the unit. She's been dealing with a lot since Jay left. They were partners but they were also married. He really didn't talk to her about what he was doing but he at least said goodbye to her before he left and she does hear from him. For the most part, I can relate."
"I deserved that. It was shitty of me to do what I did but I think my feelings for you were stronger than I was willing to admit and I knew it was wrong. You were part of the reason I left because I needed to figure things out. The other reason was because I couldn't deal with what I had done to Jenna."
"My feelings for you were stronger than I was willing to admit too. I never wanted to be the woman that broke up your marriage. It took me a while but I learned to accept that you were gone. Even though there were a few times I had wished you were around, you weren't and I accepted that. I needed to move on."
"I know about you and Tucker."
"Fin?"
"No. Tucker himself."
"When did you talk to him?"
"He's the one that brought up the liaison thing in Rome. I ran into him somewhere and we grabbed coffee. We sat down and we talked like two civilized adults, which for me is progress. He did tell me in case I ran into someone from the NYPD, that the two of you were together for about a year. He said he's not the same person he once was and you two were still friends after your break up. I knew you were with someone but he didn't get into details. He said he had heard that the NYPD wanted to send a liaison to Rome to get some of these mob people with connections to New York and was I looking for something. I told him I'd have to discuss it with Kathy. He gave me the contact person's name and I discussed it with her."
"When was this?"
"End of 2016."
"What did you do the rest of that time?"
"We spent a lot of time travelling. We spent more time in Europe than we did here and we had actually gotten a place in Rome because we loved it there so much. Eli basically went to school out there. He chose to finish here when we moved back after what happened to Kathy. I still have the place there but I haven't been able to go out there. It's too painful. I couldn't believe what had happened to Tucker though. As much as we never got along, no one deserves that."
"That was difficult for me to deal with. He had taken Noah and me to Paris and the last thing he said to me was, 'we'll always have Paris'. Around that same time was when he put in for a transfer out of IAB. Do you know why he committed suicide?"
"I never heard the entire story."
"He was sent to Fresh Kills after 9/11 to sort through debris looking for anything to be able to identify victims. He said around the time we started seeing each other, they founds spots on his lungs. It had spread to his brain and he was given 6 months to a year to live. He had recently gotten married again and he didn't want her to have to take care of a dying man. He never told her though but he left her a note with his pension and all that."
"Damn! Even over 20 years later, there are still victims."
"Unfortunately, it could have been any of us."
"True. You said there were times when you had wished I was still here."
"Yeah."
Olivia told Elliot about what had happened with William Lewis. When she was done, he didn't know what to say.
"Liv, I am so sorry you had to go through all that. I had no idea. I'm not goin' anywhere now. I'll be here in whatever capacity you want me to be."
"Thank you. I had wondered what you would have done."
"I would have killed him."
"Hank says the same thing. He said if he had known me then, he would have gone after him."
"Hank and I aren't all that different, are we?"
"Uh, no. In fact, when I first met Hank, he barged into an interrogation and was getting physical with the perp. I took him to my office and told him that I didn't tolerate that type of behavior. I told him that I had a partner like that. If he pulled any of that crap again, I'd arrest him. I did threaten to leave Hank alone with the guy and go get coffee if he wasn't going to cooperate. Hank thought it was amusing that I would threaten the guy with him doing his thing but wouldn't let him do it on his own. We got into it again in Chicago with that same case and I told him not to blow the case. We went out for beers after the case and he's been a big part of my life ever since. And don't think I wasn't tempted to threaten to arrest you when you went into the Interrogation Room with that person of interest in what happened to Kathy. I know I'm not perfect in the Interrogation Room either but now that I'm in charge, I don't tolerate that."
"I'm trying to be better but these idiots try my patience sometimes."
"I get the same thing from Hank. After you came back, Fin said he would pay big money to see you and Hank in the Interrogation Room together."
"Does Fin like bein' a Sergeant?"
"Some days are better than others. He complained when I first asked him to think about taking the exam but he decided that the pay increase would be nice. He looks out for me and has for a long time. Right now, I don't think there is anyone else I trust more with running things in my absence. Nick Amaro, who was my partner after you left, wanted to take it. Ed was the one that wanted me to take the Lieutenant's exam and to think about who I wanted for my #2. When I told Ed that Nick was interested, he said that even if he had gotten a perfect score on the exam, he'd be overlooked for the promotion. Nick was basically a younger version of you. He also had marital issues and anger issues."
"Tucker didn't say it in so many words but I got the impression that I wouldn't be promoted either."
"You always had an issue with authority."
"I still do sometimes. Ayanna tells me one thing and I have a tendency to do my own thing anyway. What bug flew up McGrath's ass anyway?"
"I have no idea other than the fact that that he has anger issues as well. I'm not sure how he made it to Chief. Sometimes I think he thinks I'm incompetent and can't do my job. I'd rather have Chief Dodds of Chief Garland. I didn't always get along with Dodds. For the longest time, he blamed me for his son's death. His son was brought in to be the Sergeant for SVU but he had gotten a transfer to the Joint Terrorism Task Force. We had this case that involved a corrections officer at Rikers, who was sexually assaulting female prisoners. His wife wanted to take the kids out of their home. Dodds and I went over there and I took the kids out. He held Dodds and his wife hostage. We were told that there were no weapons in the house but we never checked it out. Munson got into a struggle with Dodds and he shot him in the stomach. At the time, Munson's father-in-law was a higher up in the NYPD and he was grateful that his grandkids were out of that house. Mike got out of surgery and woke up but he wasn't making much sense. It turned out that he had had a stroke. Ed showed up and obviously I was expecting to have to answer questions about what had happened. He said there were 100 ways that could have gone. He was there for support. I was in the room with Chief Dodds and Mike's fiancée when Mike died. I did the long walk down the hallway and Fin, Rollins, Carisi and Ed were waiting at the other end. Just by the look on my face, they knew. The funeral was hard. I had to go talk to my therapist after that because I wished it had been me. My reason for living is Noah. It was right after that when Ed told me he had put in a transfer out of IAB to HNT and suggested Paris. Around that same time was when Hank lost his son. Chief Dodds started acting coldly towards me, so I knew he blamed me for what had happened."
"You have been through a lot."
"Yeah, I have."
"I blame myself every day for what happened to Kathy. If I could have switched places with her, I would have."
Olivia got up and went to the washroom. While she was in the washroom, she broke down. By the time she came back, the plane was getting ready to board. They boarded the plane and waited for it to take off. It was a shorter flight than what she was used to. They arrived in Chicago and got off the plane. She had checked to see if any flights from New York had arrived and there was one that had arrived just shortly before theirs did. They headed to Baggage Claim and saw Erin right away. Olivia hugged Erin when she saw her.
"Liv, I'll get the bags."
"Thanks."
Elliot went to go wait for the bags.
"I'm scared, Erin."
"I know. I am too. He's supposed to walk me down the aisle when Mark and I get married in a few months."
"We're just starting our marriage and haven't even lived in the same place yet. As a cop, I should know this is what happens but now, also being a cop's wife makes it even worse. I worried about him even before we were married."
"I get it. How's your injury?"
"It hurts but I'm ok physically."
Elliot came back with the bags and then took Erin's. They walked outside and Trudy was there.
"Hey, Trudy."
"Hey. Detective."
"Sergeant."
Trudy hugged both Olivia and Erin. She opened the trunk, so Elliot could put the bags in and then they all got in.
"Have you heard anything?"
"He's out of surgery. Everything went ok but he's still critical, so he's in ICU. He coded again on the table but Dr. Marcel was able to get him stabilized. Ruzek and Burgess were in the room when I left."
Olivia had gotten a text from Fin, so she was texting him as Trudy drove to Med. She and Elliot told Erin and Trudy about the case they had in Ohio.
"Nice."
"Yeah, I know."
Olivia had gotten a reply from Fin saying she was like Munch.
"Fin said I'm like Munch because I got shot in the ass."
"Are you a pain in your own ass too like he was?"
Olivia couldn't help but laugh. She and Elliot told Erin and Trudy about that case.
"If Dad dies, I'm puttin' a bullet in that kid myself."
"You're sounding more and more like your dad every day. I'm going to need you to be around if your dad dies because I will completely fall apart."
"If he does die, the kid will be goin' to jail for the rest of his life anyway. Upton told me the way the kid looked at Atwater when he shot his grandfather, Kevin would be a dead man right now. We already know what this kid is capable of."
"I just can't believe that this psycho kid is younger than Noah and acts that way. Sometimes I'm still afraid that Noah will end up like Johnny D."
"It's all in the upbringing. You raised him from the time he was still pretty young, right?"
"Yeah."
"I had doubts about some of my kids but they turned out ok. I give Kathy most of the credit for how they turned out though."
They arrived at Med and went to the room where Hank was after they got their visitor's badges. Elliot went to the waiting area. Hailey and Kevin were out in the hall and Adam and Kim were still in the room. Hailey and Kevin hugged Olivia and Erin. Kim saw them and came out of the room to hug them.
"Yo, Ruz."
"What?"
"You're bein' replaced."
"I'm not leavin'."
"I don't think you have a choice."
"It's my fault he's here in the first place."
"Adam, let's go check on Makayla, ok? She needs us too."
"I don't wanna."
"His wife and daughter want to be with him too."
Adam got up and walked out of the room.
"Captain, Lindsay, I just wanna say how sorry I am that all this happened. It should be me in there."
"Ruzek, don't be so hard on yourself."
"Someone has to."
The 5 of them left, while Olivia and Erin went into the room. Hank looked so helpless. Olivia leaned down and kissed Hank's forehead. Then Erin did the same. They both sat down on the same side and Olivia took his hand. She also held Erin's hand.
"Honey, I'm here and I need you to be ok. I need you to pull through this because I'm not ready to be a widow yet and I can't take any more loss in my life. I can't imagine my life or Noah's life without you in it. I love you so much."
"I need you here to walk me down the aisle in a few months. You've shaped me into the person I have become. I just wish Bunny had been more honest with both of us but I was so happy when she finally told me the truth. It never changed how I felt about you. I loved you even before I found out you were my real dad."
"I'm just thinking. Noah probably isn't going to be able to come in to see him. Daniel definitely won't."
"True."
Sharon was standing outside the room.
"Do you two need anything?"
"We're ok right now."
"Ok."
"What is the hospital policy for visitors?"
"In here, you mean?"
"Yeah."
"Minimum of 12. How old is Noah."
"Not quite 12. I know Daniel won't be able to come in."
"I'll consider making an exception for Noah but I will let you know for sure. Daniel might able to see him from the hallway. Is Olive bringing the little one too?"
"She said no. She was going to call her in-laws to see if they could take Ashley."
Erin's phone rang, so she stepped out of the room to answer it.
"You doing ok, Olivia?"
"Not really."
Olivia told Sharon what had happened to her.
"That happens and then you have to come here."
"Yeah, I know. No matter what, I would have been here."
"Hank was leaving Chicago soon anyway, right?"
"End of June. He delayed it 6 months because of Jay leaving."
"Will left Chicago too. I think he was headed to Seattle to reunite with Dr. Manning."
"Good for him. I'm guessing Hank won't be going back to work."
"Probably not."
Then Erin came back in.
"That was Olive. They're not coming. Daniel fell at school and broke his elbow. He needs to have surgery, which will be tomorrow morning. She told him about Hank and he would rather come see Papa, so he was having a fit. He's all Voight when he doesn't want to do something. Carol and Paul have Ashley. I told her at least they wouldn't need to get an actual Physical Therapist for him. They're at the hospital where Charlie is anyway. She agreed. She asked if Uncle Mark could explain stuff to him, since that's what he deals with. I told her I'd have him call."
"What does he do?"
"He's an Orthopedic Specialist."
"How'd you two meet?"
"Mark is Olive's husband's brother, so they've known each other but they officially got together around the time I had surgery on my ankle, since Mark was the Specialist I went to."
"That's great."
"I need to check in with Fin and Rollins, so I will be right back."
"Ok."
Olivia kissed Hank's forehead again and went to call Fin and Amanda. She also checked on Elliot. Sharon left as well. Once Olivia was done, she came back.
"Everything ok?"
"When Rollins picked Noah up at school, he came hobbling out. He may have sprained his ankle but he didn't want to go to the hospital though."
"I'm sure Mark checked him out."
"She called Mark to let him know. He said to keep it elevated with ice on it until he got there. He brought an ankle support for him."
"He doesn't mind."
"Today has been one hell of a day."
"Yeah, no kidding. Did you check on Elliot?"
"He fell asleep."
Then Crockett came in.
"Olivia?"
"You must be Dr. Marcel."
"I am. I don't know how much you know."
"Trudy told us that he coded again on the table."
"He did but his vitals are looking pretty good now and I was able to get him stabilized. He has had several units of blood. The bullet nicked one of the lungs, which is why he was bleeding so much but I repaired that. His heart is functioning normally."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Crockett left.
"I'm starting to get hungry."
"I am too."
Hailey came back.
"We brought Voight's SUV from the District and Platt put your bags there as well. We also have to get his work vehicle from the scene."
"Great. Thanks."
"No problem."
"How are things?"
"You mean with Jay?"
"Yeah."
"He's off the grid again. I'll hear from him and then I won't. I took my ring off and I told him I wanted a divorce. He says we'll talk about it and I remind him that he didn't talk to me before he made the decision to go to Bolivia."
"Most of what happened with us was the fact that he lied to me about him still being married."
"Yeah, I know but how do I know he's not already with someone else?"
"You don't. Choosing to end your marriage is your choice and he has to accept whatever you choose to do whether he wants to or not. If it was me and he pulled the same thing, I'd end it too. I care about Jay and probably always will and the same with Severide. Jay's biggest problem is that he doesn't like to communicate sometimes."
"That's an understatement."
"That's like what Gabby did to Matt when she went to Puerto Rico."
"I was talking to Elliot about what happened with Jay because he did the same thing when he just up and left without a word. I said at least you heard from him and he said he deserved that. He said he has accepted that I'm with Hank but he wants to be in my life in any way he can. He's been really supportive with everything that has happened today. I finally told him about William Lewis. He told me Ed was the one that told him about the liaison thing in Rome. He also said they had worked out their differences as well."
"You're kidding."
"Nope."
"I wanna get together with everyone before I go back to New York, so either dinner or Molly's or something. I have no idea how long I'm staying though."
"I'll let everyone know."
"Tell Ruzek not to blame himself for this."
"That's him though. It's Atwater I'm worried about. I did not like how that kid glared at him for killing his grandfather."
"That little psycho better be going away for a while."
"He shot Voight, so he will even though it's attempted murder. I'm sure ADA Chapman will makes sure he does. Do either of you need anything before I leave?"
"You might want to check with Elliot to see if he wants to go to his hotel."
Then Elliot was in the hallway.
"Everything ok, Liv?"
"Yeah. Do you want to go to your hotel?"
"Yeah. Maybe I better. I need to check in with my kids to see how my mom is and I need to check in with Ayanna too."
"Thanks for being here."
"You're welcome. If there's anything else I can do, let me know. If you need someone to help out in your absence, I'm sure I could temporarily go back to SVU."
"Fin did tell me that Muncy was offered a position in another unit and she's taking it. I'm guessing that might have something to do with Velasco. Fin said they should be fine with who they have, which is him, Velasco and Churlish but Bruno from the Bronx has been helping out occasionally as well. I will tell him that if things get crazy, to have Ayanna send you over."
"Of course there's always a possibility of having to go undercover again too."
Olivia got up and went to give Elliot a hug before he left with Hailey, who took him to his hotel.
"Maybe we should go out one at a time to eat, so someone is always here."
"That might work."
Then Trudy came back.
"You two probably need a dinner break. Go. I'll stay with Hank."
"Thank you."
"No problem."
Olivia and Erin kissed Hank's forehead and left to grab something for dinner, while Trudy stayed with Hank. While Erin and Olivia were at dinner, they stopped at the house to drop their stuff off. Mark had texted Erin to see if someone could come get them at O'Hare. She said someone would be there. He said they would be landing in 45 minutes. They didn't have time to get back to the hospital, so Olivia drove to the airport. By the time they got there, Mark and Noah were waiting outside. Noah got in and put his seatbelt on while Mark put the bags in the back.
"Mom, how's Dad?"
"He's still critical but he pulled through the surgery."
"Good."
"How's your ankle?"
"It hurts but Mark said he didn't think I needed xrays. I can put weight on it and the ankle support seems to be helping. He said he will give me a note for gym but I can't dance for a while either."
Mark got in and leaned into the front seat to kiss Erin. He put his seatbelt on and then Olivia drove back.
"You need to call your nephew."
"What happened?"
"He fell at school and broke his elbow, so he has to have surgery. They were supposed to be coming in either tonight or tomorrow but instead he has to have surgery. Your parents have Ashley and were going to anyway because Olive didn't want to deal with her coming here."
"She's a lot like Nikki when she was little and Mom has even pointed that out. Mom didn't have that option because our grandparents lived out of state."
"Your sister is where?"
"She's in San Francisco and she's a pediatric nurse. We all went into something in the medical field. Actually, I need to talk to Charlie anyway. The Physical Therapy Group we deal with is looking for people. I wanted to pass that info along to him to see if he'd be interested."
"The pay would be a lot better in New York."
"Oh yeah, definitely and he has told me that would love to work with me but that was before he met Olive and Daniel."
"The living expenses are higher in New York though."
"It is but I'm not sorry I ended up there. I couldn't deal with the hot summers anymore. I'll take winters in New York over summers in Phoenix any day."
"If Olive, Charlie and the kids moved to New York, do you think your parents would come too?"
"It's hard to say. They could keep the house and go out there in the winter months. They don't see Nikki and her family as often as they had hoped to. I told her to make sure she keeps the weekend of the wedding open though and she said she would. Her husband is in law enforcement, so we understand their scheduling conflicts. We grew up with that, since Dad is a retired cop."
"Erin, have you met her?"
"Yeah. Every time I'm in San Francisco, we meet up even if I meet her at the hospital for a quick dinner. I knew Carol and Paul before I was with Mark."
"Olive really lucked out. Charlie is a great guy and he is so good with Daniel. I know the reason she was hesitant to get in another relationship was because of Daniel and Hank's opinion really mattered to her. Hank's main concern was having a relationship with Daniel and that whoever it was she ended up with, treated them right. We love Ashley as much as Daniel and it means a lot to us that she calls us Papa and Grandma."
"It means just as much to Mom and Dad that Daniel calls them Grandma and Grandpa. Believe me, I totally understand Hank wanting her to end up with someone who will treat them right. We were raised to be respectful and neither of us was into playing around before settling down. Erin and Olive both questioned why Charlie and I were still single. Basically it was by choice for both of us. The last girlfriend I had was in college because I wanted to focus on Med School and what was to come after that. I do want kids but if it doesn't happen, I'm ok with that. I can spoil my nieces and nephews. Charlie was with the same girl all through high school and some of college. They had mutually broken up and she had gone to a fraternity party with her roommates. One of the guys there drugged and raped her. She called Charlie to come get her and then she went to the campus police first. They blew it off and then she went to the municipal police department. They took her statement but never followed through with it. She had gone missing a few days later and her one roommates knew she was still friends with Charlie even after the breakup, so she contacted him. He went to Dad. They were attending Arizona State and my dad was cop in Tempe. Dad had no idea that Alli had been raped. They found her but she had died of a drug overdose. For years, Charlie blamed himself for what had happened to her. When they did the autopsy, they were able to test everything and the guy that raped her was arrested and sent to prison. My dad was pissed that they never followed through with the investigation and he told Charlie they should have come to him. He said she went there on her own but he had suggested that she talk to Dad. Olive is the first woman he ever showed any interest in since Alli. He wasn't sure how he felt about being a father figure though. As it turned out, they got along great. Daniel obviously loves being a big brother and Charlie is a natural dad though. I love seeing him with Ashley. Nikki married her childhood sweetheart."
"Unfortunately, what happened to your brother's ex happens all the time. I'm glad the guy that did that to her was arrested and sent to prison."
"We are too. I should call them."
Mark called Charlie to tell him about the job and then he talked to Daniel. Daniel wanted to talk to Erin and Olivia, so Erin talked to him and Olive until they got to Med and then Olivia talked to both of them before they went in. Noah and Mark got their visitor's badges and they had let Olivia know that per Ms. Goodwin, it was ok for Noah to visit his dad. They went to ICU and Erin and Mark went to the waiting area, while Olivia and Noah went in.
"Sorry about that Trudy. We stopped home to drop our stuff off and then Mark texted Erin to let her know that they needed someone to pick them up. The flight was landing in 45 minutes."
"That's fine. Randy is on shift until tomorrow morning anyway, so I'm in no hurry to get home. I'll help out in any way I can."
"Thanks. We really appreciate that."
Trudy hugged them and then she left. Noah sat down.
"Hey, Dad. I'm here now too."
Olivia kissed Hank's forehead again and sat down next to Noah. Hank started stirring and then his eyes were open. He looked around and saw his wife and son.
"Hey, you."
Hank put his hand on his breathing tube.
Noah pulled out some paper and a pen from his backpack, so Hank could write.
How long do I have to have this in?
"They didn't say."
I love you.
"I love you too. You don't know how scared I was when I got the call from Kim telling me that you had been shot. How do you feel?"
Tired and sore. Who's all here?
"Besides us, Erin and Mark are here. Mark brought Noah. Elliot is here but at his hotel. We were in Ohio helping with a case and I got shot in my ass. It could have been a lot worse. Trudy just left and most of your squad was here when Erin and I got here. Ruzek blames himself."
Not his fault. Are Callum and Samantha in custody?
"That's what it sounds like. Atwater shot the grandfather and I guess got a death glare from the kid."
Not surprised. Glad you're here.
"Where else would I be? Olive was planning to come out with Daniel either once he got out of school today or tomorrow if Charlie was coming too. Daniel fell at school and broke his elbow. He needs to have surgery, so they won't be coming out, since the surgery is tomorrow. He's not very happy about that and is apparently being stubborn like his grandfather. She was already planning to leave Ashley with Carol and Paul."
I'm not stubborn.
"Really?"
How's your ass?
"A little sore. Noah probably sprained his ankle today."
You ok?
"Yeah. I put ice on it and kept it elevated until Mark came to pick me up. He brought the ankle support and said he would give me a note for gym. Mom said I could miss the rest of the week, so I could come here. I'm glad I only have a few weeks left. I can't dance for a while though."
Glad you're here too. Who was he going to be staying with?
"Amanda and Sonny. They sent their love."
Noah pulled something out of his backpack
"This is from Jesse and Billie."
Thank you.
"We will have to get something to hang these up withonce you get moved to a regular room."
Sounds like a plan.
"Noah, are you ok to go tell your sister that Dad's awake?"
"Yeah, sure."
Noah got up and headed to the waiting area to tell Erin that Hank was awake. Noah came back and Erin and Mark were with him. They stayed in the hallway and waved.
"Noah, you hungry?"
"Yes!"
"Let's go grab a bite to eat."
Noah grabbed his stuff and Olivia gave Mark the key for Hank's SUV. They left after Noah kissed Olivia and Mark kissed Erin. The doctor had come in to check on Hank and answered any questions they may have had. Hank was concerned about the breathing tube but the doctor told him that since he was shot in the chest and his lung had collapsed, it would probably have to stay in a few days. Hank nodded indicating that he understood. Then the doctor left.
"Erin, did you know Will left Med?"
"No. When did you hear that?"
"I think it was when Olive called you. Sharon Goodwin told me."
"Where'd he go?"
"She said Seattle to probably reunite with Dr. Manning."
"I'm glad to hear that. Do you want me to stay here with him tonight?"
"Go be with Mark."
"You sure? You don't need to be sleeping in a chair with your injury too."
"It's a recliner, so I should be fine. I think I do need to get my bandage changed though. I feel like I need a shower though."
They kept talking and then a little while later, Mark and Noah came back. They stood out in the hallway.
"What did Charlie say about what you talked to him about?"
"He was going to discuss it with Olive first and then met me know. Daniel seemed a little more at ease with his surgery after I told him what they would do.
What's going on with Charlie and Olive?
"The Physical Therapy Group that Mark deals with is looking for people and he asked Charlie if he'd be interested. He obviously had to talk to Olive first."
It would be great to have everyone in the same city.
"Yes, it would."
"So, I was thinking. Why don't the two of you take Noah and go home. I'll stay with Hank."
"Babe, you don't have to do that."
"I don't have a problem with it."
"What do you think?"
"Like I said before, I could use a shower and I do need to change my bandage."
"I don't think I knew you did something. You are limping a bit though."
Olivia told Mark what happened.
"And you went to Urgent Care?"
"Yep. They got all the shrapnel out and they sent me the before and after xrays."
"Let me have a look."
Olivia pulled up the xrays on her phone and showed Mark.
"Looks good. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the bone."
"It was mostly on the fleshy part. I need to follow up with my doctor in a few days unless the pain gets worse."
"They gave you an antibiotic?"
"They did."
"Ok."
"I guess sleeping in an actual bed is a good idea."
Noah started yawning.
"Someone is tired."
"A little bit."
Erin got up and kissed Hank's forehead.
"Love you."
Love you too.
Olivia went over and kissed his forehead as well.
"I love you and I will see you in the morning."
Ok. I love you too.
Erin went out into the hall, while Noah came in to hug Hank.
"Bye, Dad. I hope you feel better."
Thanks.
"Love you."
Love you too.
Erin kissed Mark and then she left with Olivia and Noah. They headed to the house. When they arrived, Noah went to get ready for bed and read for a while. Olivia went to take a shower and then she had Erin come in to replace her bandage. Olivia finished getting ready for bed and went to kiss Noah goodnight, while Erin went to take a shower. Olivia went to bed and then once Erin was done in the shower, she got ready for bed before going to bed herself.
