Frozen Leaf Café
"So you said your Doctor Spencer Reid," Emily began once she had a cup of coffee in her hands. Luckily, this place decent coffee because England was a place that a lot of people drank tea instead of coffee. Luckily, there were enough tourist here that there were plenty of places to get a more than decent cup of coffee The Frozen Leaf being one of them. The Frozen Leaf was an odd name for a café maybe but it worked and the place was moderately busy.
"That's right," Spencer agreed, even as he drank his vanilla latte.
"And what are you a doctor of Dr. Reid?" Emily asked.
"I have a psychology degree from Stanford," Spencer answered.
He also had a language degree, and spoke several languages and also one in math, but he didn't tell Emily about those degrees as he didn't want to appear to be bragging. He gotten several degrees over the course of his long life, but according to his updated data, he'd gone all those degrees in the space of 10 years, but that wasn't really the case. He got the other two degrees when he was bored, as unlike Dave, he didn't have a mate to stop that boredom.
Besides, as far as he knew, Dave had never actually been to college that didn't mean he wasn't intelligent, because he was very much so, just that he learned things by living his life rather than sitting in a classroom.
"That's impressive," Emily told him and Spencer simply nodded.
"Thank you for the compliment," Spencer said politely, as he took a sip of his coffee.
"You're welcome," Emily said, "so you said as if you had been struck by lightning the minute you saw me."
"I did and I certainly wasn't expecting it," Spencer said, even as he clutched his Styrofoam coffee cup between both his hands.
"So it's never happened to you before," Emily asked and Spencer shook his head.
"Nope, I'm not really close to a lot of females other than Bellamy," answered Spencer.
"Bellamy? Is that your sister?" Emily asked feeling a strong surge of jealousy at the thought that this Bellamy might be a former girlfriend.
The feeling took Emily by surprise, as she certainly wasn't expecting to feel jealous of a woman she had never met and only knew the first name of.
"Ishida, is the original last name, but she's been married to the man I consider my father Dave for sometime now so I suppose I should think of her as Bellamy Rossi, but I knew her under her original surname so still think of her under the last name she was born with. As for siblings, I'm an only child," Spencer said.
Emily's jealousy vanished once she learned that Spencer might have affection for this Bellamy, but only because she was married to the man he considered a father and that he had never dated her.
"Well, we do have that in common, as I was only child too," Emily said really beginning to like this, Spencer Reid.
Just because she liked him though, didn't mean Emily wasn't going to run a background check for safety's sake, but her instincts were telling her that this Spencer Reid was a good man, but just in case those instincts were wrong it couldn't hurt.
"So from what you said, you and your birth father aren't close or is he dead?" Emily asked.
"He's dead now, as he died sometime ago, but we weren't close when he was alive," Spencer answered choosing his words with care. "He always considered me too intelligent and treated it like it was a disease, instead of an evolution of the human condition. Dave is a totally different kind of man from my late father and has always supported me."
"Happens all the time," Emily said. "My mother was ambassador and my father was in politics. I really didn't have much of a childhood, though I did get to travel, thanks too, my mother's job as ambassador, so at least there's that. I had tutors when I was traveling with mom, but I really didn't have time to make friends not lifelong friends anyway."
"That's another point in common we share, as I didn't have much of a childhood either. I was simply too intelligent for the children at my school. I was picked on for that as well, as the fact that my mother wasn't married, and that my father had divorced her to marry his sidepiece."
"Like you could help that," Emily snorted. "I know from experience that children can be cruel though."
"Yes, they can be," Spencer agreed. "They can be like rabid rats who will pounce on anybody that is considered different. While mom and me moved one town over it wasn't that far from where we lived previously and gossip travels. Let's just say, I made no friends at all, as I was too intelligent for most of them and that was only one thing they picked on me for, the other being that I am in no way athletic, as I'm simply too clumsy to be."
"I know what you mean, because of when I wasn't traveling with mom I went to school too, and I was something of a geek just like you were, but I was certainly more popular. Besides, I could beat up a boy twice my size and they soon learned to leave me alone. Apparently, you didn't do that, defend yourself from the bullies."
"No, I didn't," Spencer said. "I didn't want to disappoint my mother, as she was an educator and while she was still married to my father, well, I suppose, he doesn't matter, but even if I had gotten in trouble he wouldn't have done anything about the bullying anyway."
Spencer didn't tell Emily that would've caused complications for his mother if he had beat up those bullies, since she was the schoolmistress, and he hadn't wanted to do that, because his mother had always supported and loved him unlike his father.
If he had caused too much trouble, his mother, may very well have been fired and Spencer knew that Diana Reid had needed that job so the two of them could keep eating so he'd tried to make it easy on her.
He missed his mother sometimes, but she'd been dead for a very long time and he swore he was going to name his first little girl after her, but that was only if Emily didn't tell him to get lost, because she knew nothing about the supernatural. Well, at least as far as he knew anyway.
He didn't know if she had ever encountered something that could be considered weird or strange, but it was very possible.
"That is so sad that a father didn't support his son and you're only crime was being too intelligent," Emily said, shaking her head feeling a sudden empathy for the man sitting across from her. "I know it happens as my parents divorced when I was young just as yours did. We both got through it."
"Well, that's another point we have in common," Spencer said. "Our past are at least somewhat similar."
The two continued to talk for sometime before they parted after changing phone numbers.
~~~Spencer and Emily~~~
Emily went to work the next day and immediately started running a background check on one Spencer Reid to make sure he was aboveboard.
Once the data appeared on her computer screen she studied it and nodded, as she saw the Spencer Reid was on the level with what he had told her. He did indeed have a degree in psychology, but what Spencer hadn't mentioned was his degree in languages and also advanced math, all gotten within a 10 year span. He was also worth millions of dollars, which he also hadn't mentioned Emily saw.
Spencer certainly didn't dress like he was wealthy nor did he act like it. In fact, he was very unassuming, despite his wealth.
His clothes had been nice, but didn't scream wealthy to her and that he had gotten three degrees in a 10 year span said he was a genius and had concentrated on his studies.
Spencer had absolutely no criminal record not even a littering or parking ticket fine. He was apparently an outstanding member of society and she'd be a fool not to give the relationship a chance.
She had liked what she had learned about him the other night and was very attracted to him. She hadn't felt that kind of attraction to a man in well, ever actually.
There had been Ian Doyle, but there she had been undercover in order to bring in the arms dealer, so he didn't count.
"Good morning Emily," greeted one of her coworkers.
"Good morning Dan," Emily greeted cordially in return smiling a little.
Dan was actually from London and had a thick British accent while Emily did not, as she had traveled and extensively as a child though she did have British citizenship.
"So what are you doing?" Dan asked.
"I'm running a background check on someone I met the other night," Emily admitted candidly.
Emily knew she could be honest as she and Dan were friends, though they had never been romantically linked and they never would be. Dan was actually like a brother to her, as she wasn't attracted to him in that way.
Emily told Dan the whole story of how Dr. Spencer Reid had approached her and how she had feared that he was some kind of criminal, but his background was clean.
"It was just the way he approached me that had me suspicious, as he followed me directly out of the gift shop and was looking around for me. He even pushed his way through a crowd of tourists in order to approach me and while that is not suspicious in itself..."
"I understand," Dan said, as he had listened to Emily story intently. "It was the way he approached you that made you suspicious."
"Exactly, but it looks like my suspicions were unfounded as his record is clean not even a littering or parking ticket much less anything more serious," Emily said.
"So are you going to see him again now that you know he's not a criminal?" Dan asked.
"I liked him enough that yes, I am," Emily said. "We went to Frozen Leaf Café that's close to the Tower of London and had coffee and just talked."
"I'm surprised you were taking in a tourist site as you've been living here for years," Dan said.
"I know, but I've never had a chance to see it whenever mom and me were in London, as it's not like we toured the sites and I wouldn't have been interested back when I was a kid anyway," Emily said. "I figured since I had a free day I might as well be a tourist for once."
"So enjoy the tour?" Dan asked.
"I did actually, very much, as some of the stories they tell are fascinating," Emily admitted. "I certainly learned quite a bit about English history like the nine days queen, Jane Grey, and how she was executed. Then there was Anne Boleyn, who was executed after three years of marriage to Henry the Eighth and all because she failed to produce a son like that's really her fault."
"I see you learned quite a bit on the tour, but you have to remember that times were a lot different back then and politics often played a part in executing someone. Well, let me know how your next meeting with Spencer goes, will you?" Dan requested.
"Sure, but why are you so interested?" Emily asked with an eyebrow raised quizzically.
"Because I'm a busybody," Dan, suggested with a smile, and Emily snorted and then made rude noise.
"Understatement!" Emily exclaimed. "You were born a busybody and you'll die as one Daniel."
"I just want to make sure that you don't get yourself in trouble if this guy turns out to be a asshole," Dan told her quietly but sincerely. "You let me know if he turns abusive like by hitting you. You know what I mean. I'll take care of it if that happens.
"I can take care of myself," Emily told Dan coolly with a stern expression, which then softened, "but thanks for caring. However, I don't see that happening, as he is definitely not an alpha male and those are the ones most likely to turn abusive. No he's more gentle, understanding, extremely intelligent."
"I would say so, considering he got three degrees in 10 years," Dan said. "Still keep me up-to-date, please."
"All right, but I'm not going to be needing rescue like some helpless fairytale princess," Emily said and Dan chuckled before taking his leave.
~~~Spencer and Emily~~~
"That is terrific news Spencer," Dave told his adopted son enthusiastically.
Dave had never officially adopted Spencer, but would have liked to back when they had first met, however, Spencer was already grown up when they had and was 19, which while still young, was no longer considered a child, particularly in the time that Spencer had been born.
"I am so happy for you and Bellamy will be too when she hears," Dave added.
"I knew you would be," Spencer said, smiling at his father in every way over the link screen.
"So what's her name?" Dave wanted to know.
"Emily Prentiss," Spencer answered. "She works at Interpol. She was rather suspicious at the way I approached her and I can't say I blame her any."
"Tell me," Dave requested and Spencer did so. He told Dave about how he had first seen her on the tour of the Tower of London, but hadn't seen her face at first, not until they had gotten to the gift shop. It was then he had known that she was his mate once he saw her profile.
"I stood there like a right idiot for what seemed like an eternity so shocked I had trouble processing," Spencer said.
Dave snorted at that then said, "I don't blame you for being shocked, as I was certainly shocked when I saw Bellamy for the first time. I knew my life had changed completely the minute I set eyes on her."
"That's exactly how I felt," Spencer admitted smiling an expression that made his face light up. "Now whether or not she'll accept things like immortality and mates is another question."
"You said she works at Interpol so don't be surprised if she immediately ran a background check on you," Dave said
Spencer blinked, and then blinked again, as if process and what Dave had said then spoke, "I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right, its something I definitely would've done if Emily had approached a me like I did her. Luckily, my background is clean, not even a parking ticket, so that's not a worry as there's nothing to find."
"That's good," Dave said. "I truly hope that it works out for you Spencer, as I was never so happy until after I met Bellamy and she agreed to be mine on a permanent basis. It'll be the same for you and you'll be more content and happy if you manage to win this Emily over."
"I've seen how you and Bellamy are with each other and I've been wanting the same for myself, so here's hoping it does work out," Spencer said. "How is Lizbet, Chet, Dougie?"
Dougie was actually Douglas, but the family called him Dougie and Lizbet was known as Lizzy.
"Just fine," Dave promised smiling, as he thought about his children. "They miss their Uncle Spencer and Bellamy and I told them that you would be back sometime in the next few weeks. Of course, Bella and me know plans change and now that you've met your mate, I know you're not about to come back to the states permanently."
"Not unless Emily comes with me," Spencer agreed. "Of course, there's no point of making plans right now as we only had a first date and there's no guarantees that she'll agree to another one as I haven't heard back from her yet."
"You will, because she'll be just as attracted to you as you are to her and since you're background check is clean there's no reason for her not to contact you," said Dave.
"I'll let you know how it goes," Spencer promised smiling before he signed off.
Dave's image faded from the vid screen.
