Sasuke slowly woke up that morning in his bed next to his boyfriend Naruto and smiled, kissing his forehead as he then slowly sat up. As he realized what day it was though then his smile faded and he looked down at his hands, swallowing a bit, but he didn't let himself cry.
He forced himself to get up and then headed to the kitchen, starting to make some breakfast for Naruto, just trying to distract himself of what day it was.
Today was June 9th, his brother Itachi's birthday. It had been about a year and a half since Itachi's death, since that day, but it still haunted him. His guilt never faded, and he got really depressed just thinking about it.
He had hated and despised Itachi for years, all over something that he shouldn't have. He pushed down his feelings of love for his brother and forced himself to hate him, because of what had happened with their clan. Then it turned out it wasn't even Itachi's fault, and that he had killed him for no reason at all. He regretted every second of his life leading up to that, just wishing that he had actually thought about it more, and then maybe he would've figured everything out sooner and Itachi wouldn't have died.
Sasuke exhaled shakily after a few moments as he put the spatula down, his hands staring to tremble as he thought about it more, and then he just gripped onto the counter, bowing his head, squeezing his eyes shut as he teared up. He couldn't take it, the guilt of killing the only family he had left, killing his own brother. He wanted to scream and cry and break things and yell at himself, he even wanted to hurt himself, but he knew he shouldn't, and he didn't want Naruto to see.
As more minutes passed he eventually calmed down enough to finish making breakfast for Naruto, and put it on a play for him and then left a note, saying he was taking a walk. Then he just grabbed his coat and slipped on some shoes and left, not caring what he looked like at the moment, just needing to take a walk alone, away from everything.
As Sasuke walked down the street past other apartments and houses he felt a few tears fall down his face but quickly wiped them off, not wanting himself to cry, feeling weak. Then he just put his hands in his pockets and kept walking, ducking his head as he walked past a few people, not wanting anyone to recognize him and try to talk to him, not being able to handle something like that at the moment.
Eventually Sasuke ended up at a nearby park, one he often went to since it reminded him of his childhood, and he paused, not sure if he wanted to stay there, not sure if it would make it worse. After a few more moments though he sat down, deciding that it was okay and he would be fine, it reminded him of happy memories anyways.
Sasuke just sat there for a while, a few more tears going down his face and this time he let them since no one was around and he really wanted to cry. He felt horrible and didn't feel like he even deserved to exist. All the trauma from his past came flooding back, the night of the massacre, his parents deaths, all of the blood. And then he saw Itachi, his face, how he smiled before he died, and he just felt worse. He wished so badly to take everything he said to him back, he wished he could start over and tell him how much he meant to him. He wanted to hug him and tell him he loved him and how he was happy he had him as his brother but he messed it up. He didn't even honor Itachi's last wishes for him, which made him feel even worse.
Sasuke just sat there on the bench crying, not knowing what he should do, he wanted to cut, he wanted to kill himself, but he also didn't. He had other people in his life that he didn't want to leave, but he didn't know any other way to deal with the pain that came back every year for him.
As he just sat there, tears dripping down his face, his eyes closed, he tried thinking of positives, like Naruto had told him to a few days before when he had comforted him during his mother Mikoto's birthday. This week of the year was always a hard one for him since it was his mother and brother's birthday's near the same time, and they were the one's he had always been closest with.
Sasuke thankfully now had Naruto and a few friends to help him through times like this, but it was still really hard. Naruto tried helping him, and Sasuke tried to pretend it helped, but it really didn't help that much. He just couldn't get over everything, and didn't know how to talk to Naruto about it. He's told Naruto about his parents and brother, but he's never really gone into detail about how much he's been hurt from it and how it still effected him.
Sasuke bit his bottom lip as he cried more, trembling now as he had flashbacks, but then suddenly he jumped a bit and looked up when he felt a hand on his shoulder, seeing Naruto with a worried face in front of him.
"Sasuke?.." Naruto said, worried, seeing the tears on Sasuke's face and how he was trembling, knowing something was wrong.
When Sasuke saw Naruto he wasn't sure what to do, the flashbacks still fresh in his mind, but he tried focusing on him and his voice, trying to ground himself. His vision was blurry from the tears and he was still trembling, but as he felt Naruto sitting next to him and his arms suddenly around him it started to help.
After a few seconds he hugged onto him back, turning and burying his face in Naruto's shoulder, starting to feel a little better, being able to cry and let his emotions out. After a few minutes he calmed down, and just sat there for another few moments before wiping his tears off and slowly pulling back, not looking up at Naruto, feeling embarrassed and vulnerable since he hadn't broken down like that in front of him for a while.
"..Are..Are you okay..Sasuke..." Naruto asked softly after another moment, really worried and feeling bad that he had forgotten what a tough week it was for Sasuke, forgetting that it was Itachi's birthday until this morning when he woke up and Sasuke wasn't there.
Sasuke didn't know what to say, and didn't even feel like he could say anything at the moment, and so he just sat there and then bit his lip and shook his head, wiping more tears off. Then Naruto just slowly hugged him again, hoping it would help.
Sasuke didn't know how long they sat there, Naruto's arms around him as he cried against Naruto's shoulder, but after a while he finally calmed down. He wished that Naruto didn't find him, wished that he wasn't so emotional at the moment, because he knew Naruto would want to talk to him about it, and he didn't want to.
"Sasuke.." Naruto said after another moment after Sasuke had calmed down and pulled away again, wanting to talk to him, but not wanting to make things worse.
"..Do..Do you want to go back to the house..." He said softly, rubbing Sasuke's arm lightly, and Sasuke just shook his head, still not looking up at him, not being able to.
"Okay.." Naruto replied softly again, and then he just sat there with him, holding his hand for another fifteen minutes or so in silence until some kids came and got to the park with their parents.
Eventually after more kids came with their parents and Sasuke had calmed down more he felt crowded and then wanted to leave. He took a breath and then wiped all the remaining tears off his face swallowing, hoping he didn't start crying again, trying not to think about anything anymore.
"Sasuke?.." Naruto said after a few moments, noticing Sasuke was better but looked tense now, and he knew Sasuke still wouldn't want to talk, so he just decided to ask him questions that just needed a nod or shake of the head.
"Do..do you want to go back now?.." He asked softly, squeezing Sasuke's hand a bit, and Sasuke nodded a bit, mostly calmed down, now wanting to go back to their apartment where it felt more comfortable.
Naruto nodded and then slowly stood up, still holding Sasuke's hand gently, and then when Sasuke stood up Naruto slowly started to walk with him, leaving the park, heading down the street as people walked by, the village getting busy since it was almost midday already.
Sasuke slowly walked next to Naruto, holding his hand back now, feeling a little better with him there, just walking with him and not talking felt nice.
Naruto glanced at Sasuke as they walked together, seeing him looking at the ground as they walked, and then he looked down a bit too, thinking, trying to figure out what he should do. He wanted to help Sasuke, and wanted to talk to him to help, but he knew at the moment that would make things worse, and so he just kept walking back to their apartment, staying quiet.
Once they both got back in and Naruto had closed the door Sasuke then slowly let go of Naruto's hand, making him look at him, still feeling bad, and then Naruto swallowed a bit before opening his mouth to say something, but then stopped as Sasuke suddenly went forward a bit and hugged him.
Naruto stood there for a moment and then hugged him back, rubbing his back a bit as he felt Sasuke trembling a bit again, trying to comfort him as much as possible, wanting to help in any way he could, even if it was just a little.
Sasuke bit his lip as he hugged Naruto, his face in Naruto's shoulder as he started tearing up again, but he took deep breaths, not wanting to break down again, feeling like he wanted to talk to Naruto now. Naruto was his partner, his love, his entire world, and always somehow made him feel better, and he needed him right now, and now felt ready to talk to him.
After a few more moments Sasuke slowly let his arms drop to his sides, and then he just stood there for a moment until Naruto slowly reached up to his head still resting on his shoulder, gently rubbing his hand through his hair. And then Sasuke slowly lifted his head up, wiping a few tears off that he had cried again with his sleeve.
"H..How about we go to our room and if you want we can talk..Alright?.." Naruto said, giving a small comforting and reassuring smile, squeezing Sasuke's hand a bit that he was still holding.
Sasuke then nodded a bit and then wiped his eyes with his sleeve again as he slowly followed Naruto to their room, sitting down on their bed with him. Then he just sat there with him for a few more minutes until Naruto talked again. "I..I know it's..your brother's birthday today..I..I'm sorry that I forgot..."
Sasuke took a breath and nodded a bit, looking down at his hands though, feeling nervous talking about it with him. "Y..Yeah...It..It's okay..."
"..Do..Do you need anything or..or is there any way I can help you.." Naruto said, looking at Sasuke, wishing he knew what he could do, knowing he couldn't feel everything Sasuke was since he didn't go through what he did.
Sasuke sighed a bit, resting his elbows on his knees as he put his face in his hands, rubbing his eyes with his palms, taking a shaky breath, not sure what could help him. He wished that he could get past this, he wanted to. He remembered going to his parents graves every year on their birthdays before he had killed Itachi, giving them flowers, telling them how he would avenge them, but now since he had learned the truth and killed Itachi it's been different, because he didn't feel like a good son or brother, and didn't feel like he could go there again after what he did. He wanted to visit them, he did, he just couldn't bring himself to.
"I.." Sasuke tried to say, but then his voice cracked and he started crying again, tears going down his face as he closed his eyes, trembling. Then Naruto just scooted closer to Sasuke and gently wrapped his arms around him, pulling him against him a bit, hoping that physical contact was what helped him at the moment.
Sasuke just trembled more and leaned against Naruto, breaking down again, but feeling better from the physical contact and now more comfortable since they were on their bed in their apartment together.
Naruto rubbed Sasuke's back as he cried against him, feeling unsure though, trying to be as comforting and supportive as possible, not wanting to make Sasuke uncomfortable, not knowing what he should do since Sasuke barely cried and showed his emotions, not wanting to make things worse.
"I-I feel like a h-horrible b-brother..." Sasuke finally managed to stutter out after a few moments covering his face with his arm as he trembled and cried more, and Naruto felt even worse, rubbing his back more, hugging him.
"Sasuke, don't say that, you..you aren't a horrible brother." Naruto said, and then bit his lip slightly, trying to think of what he should say.
Sasuke exhaled shakily, pulling away slightly, shaking his head. "I..I am..I..I-I killed him..." He said, more tears going down his face.
"Sasuke, it wasn't your fault, you..you didn't mean to kill him you.." Naruto started, biting his lip, not sure what to say. "You didn't know.."
"It..it doesn't matter if I knew or not Naruto, I..I still k-killed my own brother..I..I-I killed the only f-family I had left..." Sasuke said in reply, trembling as more tears went down his face, his eyes closed still.
"S..Sasuke, th..that's not true..You..You still have me.." Naruto said, gently grabbing Sasuke's hands and holding them as he smiled softly, trying to be reassuring. "You..You thought he was the reason your clan was killed for years Sasuke...I...I would've done the same thing y'know..."
Sasuke slowly opened his eyes a bit as Naruto talked, looking at their hands and then looking up at him. "It wasn't your fault..He..He wanted you to kill him anyways..It was his choice..And..and either way, he was proud of you Sasuke, and he was happy when he left..." Naruto said, smiling a bit, trying to make Sasuke feel better.
Naruto bit his lip slightly and then continued, trying to make sure he didn't make it worse by accidentally saying something or triggering a flashback. "I..I know you've been through a lot and..and I might not have gone through what you have but I know what it's like to lose someone or hurt someone you love and..and I know this week is really hard for you.." Naruto started, speaking slowly with affection and comfort, still holding Sasuke's hands, looking into his eyes. "But I promise I'll always be here for you and..and even if I can't take all of the pain away I..I'll try my hardest to help and I'll share the pain with you..Okay..You don't have to go through this alone..."
Sasuke looked at Naruto as Naruto spoke and smiled at him, and then Sasuke started crying more, feeling better though as he leaned forward against Naruto, leaning his head against Naruto's shoulder, closing his eyes again. "Th-thank you.." Sasuke said, crying more, feeling better, glad he had Naruto in his life, because he always made everything better and made his pain go away.
Naruto smiled a bit more at this and wrapped his arms around Sasuke again, glad that he made him feel better. "You're welcome.." He said, and then just sat there for another few minutes as Sasuke calmed down again.
"N..Naruto..." Sasuke finally managed to say quietly after a few more minutes, pulling away slowly, wiping his nose.
"Yeah Sasu.." Naruto said, still holding his hand, giving a soft smile to tell him he could tell him anything.
"I.." Sasuke started, and then swallowed a bit and took a nervous breath. "Can..Can you come with me to...to my parents graves..."
Sasuke bit his lip slightly, not sure how he was able to get that out, but he did. He was still too scared and didn't feel like he deserved to go there, but he wanted to, and maybe Naruto being there with him would make it better.
Naruto smiled a bit at this, squeezing Sasuke's hands a little again. "Of course I will." He said, proud of him, knowing it was probably hard for him to say that.
"How about we pick up some flowers on the way too." Naruto suggested, still giving him a small smile, knowing how Sasuke used to bring flowers to their graves, having seen him doing it a couple times when they were younger.
Sasuke smiled a bit back and nodded a little, already feeling a little better. "Y..yeah.." He replied, but he still had that feeling that he shouldn't because he didn't deserve to, part of him felt like his parents wouldn't want to see him after what he did to Itachi, but he tried to ignore it.
Naruto nodded and smiled back and then slowly got up with him, helping Sasuke wash off and get actually dressed, going slow so Sasuke could calm down more, and then once they were both ready they headed out together, hand in hand down the street towards the nearest flower shop.
"What flowers do you want to get them?" Naruto said, looking at Sasuke and smiling and giving his hand a light squeeze.
Then Sasuke looked over the flowers, taking a breath to stay calm. "Can..Can we do these.." He said, reaching out and softly touching the petals of some pink and white carnations. He had usually brought roses, but this time he wanted something else, and the flowers reminded him of Naruto, which gave him a good feeling, wanting his parents and brother to know he had someone.
Then Naruto nodded a bit and smiled. "Of course Sasu.." He said, and then he went to the front and paid for them for him as Sasuke got them.
"Y..you didn't have to pay Naruto." Sasuke said, feeling slightly bad, and then Naruto just grabbed his hand that wasn't holding the flowers and intertwined their fingers, smiling. "It's okay Sasuke..I'm fine with paying today.."Sasuke took a breath and nodded and smiled a bit, thankful, and then him and Naruto headed down the street together to the Uchiha district, glad that no one talked to them as they made there way there and inside.
Naruto gently squeezed Sasuke's hand, smiling reassuringly as they made their way to the cemetary, going through and over to Sasuke's parents graves, and the one recently made for his brother.
"Go ahead Sasu..It's okay.." Naruto said, smiling again, trying to comfort him as much as possible, and then Sasuke nodded and went forward, letting go of Naruto's hand as he knelt down and placed the flowers in front of his parents graves first, already tearing up and starting to cry again.
"H..Hi mother..father..." Sasuke started, closing his eyes and taking a shaky breath before opening them again and wiping tears off. "I..I want you to meet someone..I..I have someone in my life now..like you always said I would.."
Naruto smiled slightly and knelt down with him next to him, putting his hands together and bowing his head, giving them his respects as he then held Sasuke's hand. "Hello Mr. And Mrs. Uchiha..I'm Naruto.."
Sasuke watched Naruto and smiled slightly, still clutching the other flowers in his hand tightly though that were for Itachi, a bit scared to go to his grave after, but feeling better with Naruto there with him.
Then they just sat there for a little while more, just talking to Sasuke's parents, wishing his mother a happy late birthday, Sasuke slowly starting to feel better. And then once they were done Sasuke glanced over at Itachi's grave he had made near his parents headstones and got nervous, but then he felt Naruto squeeze his hand lightly and looked back at him, seeing him smiling a bit. "It'll be okay..Come on.."
Sasuke looked at him and then nodded a bit and then let out a shaky breath, not feeling as bad or scared as he thought he would as they both got up and went to Itachi's grave, sitting down infront of it, paying their respects again, and then talking to him a little, wishing him a happy birthday and then Sasuke telling him about Naruto and how they were together, and how sorry he was and how much he loved him and wished he could see him again.
Then after a few minutes of talking again, Sasuke stopped, feeling like he had said enough, crying a lot still, and then he just looked back at Naruto and speaking quietly, tears streaming down his face. "Th..thank you for coming with me Naruto.."
Naruto then smiled back at him a bit and nodded, squeezing his hand slightly, knowing how hard this was for him, but also knowing he felt better now. "Mhm..I'll always be here for you Sasuke..No matter what..." He said, and then Sasuke smiled, still crying, but now he was happy, glad that he had someone like Naruto in his life, and glad he finally visited his parents and brother again.
