Lovebug
"He's going to call right? He has to! I mean, he seemed interested..."
Frustrated, Zatanna paced back and forth in her room. Her phone laid on her bed. Black screen and purple case. Devoid of any activity.
*RING RING*
Hastily, she picked it up.
"Robin?"
"Uhhh No? Zatanna, it's Cecily."
"Huh? Oh, uh hi Cecily! Um What's up?"
"Well, I was gonna ask about the math homework, but now I'm much more interested in this Robin character."
"It's nothing hehe. Don't worry about it."
"Well from how you reacted, you seemed like you were really expecting a call. Is he cute?"
"Extremely…Wait? How'd you know Robin is a guy?"
"I didn't..." Cecily smirked
"I-I um er SHUT UP!"
"Ooooo Zatanna's got a crush!"
"I do not! Or I guess maybe. It's complicated."
"How so?"
"He seems very closed off. Like he keeps people at arms distance for some reason. We've known each other for a while but he's only just recently asked for my number."
"I see. Sounds mysterious."
"Yea. There's just something about him though. I feel very drawn to him"
"Well. I'm not gonna keep a moth from her flame. I'll ask Tommy about the math homework. You go reel in your man!"
"HE'S NOT MY MAN!"
*CLICK*
"Ugh" Zatanna sighed.
She fell face first on the bed and buried it in her pillow. Doubt crept in her mind. Maybe he wasn't going to call tonight. Maybe he wasn't as interested as she thought he was. Maybe she's just fantasizing a little too much.
*RING RING*
"What else do you want, Cecily!" she answered
"Uhhh, Hi! It's um, Robin..."
Abruptly, she sat upright!
"Oh! Uh hi Rob...er Robin! How are you?"
"I'm good. So uh, whatcha doing?"
"Oh! Nothing much. Just sitting in my bedroom."
"Hehe cool cool."
He didn't say anything else. They both just sat on the line waiting for the other to speak. Robin's heart pounded as he desperately tried to find something to say. Zatanna held her breath and curled a strand of her air anxiously waiting for him to say something. The air grew tense as the two teens were locked in a ridiculous game of chicken. Finally, Zatanna decided to win (or lose depending on your point of view) this standoff.
"So, what are you wearing?" she shyly asked.
"Huh?"
"That's what people ask on these late-night phone calls right? You wearing anything cute?" she asked with surprising boldness.
Robin was left speechless, over the edge. The absurdity of her question actually broke his brain a little. All he could do was laugh.
"Hahahahahaha. Wow, I didn't expect that."
"Why not? I told you to be Chalant with me, right? That means I get to do the same. Now what are you hiding Boy Wonder? You in some short shorts and letting your knees feel the breeze?"
"Heh. Yup. Got some pixie boots to bring some elf aesthetic into the look."
"Ooo kinky heheh."
"Hah. No but really I'm just in some sweatpants and a hoodie."
"Pft lame!"
"Well excuse me for wanting to feel comfortable!"
"Lemme guess. It's just a plain colored hoodie and grey sweatpants?"
"Well, er yea"
"Ha! Knew it! Lame! At least have some pizzazz, Rob. I would add a little more color and flair to my lounge wear."
"Yea, I bet you'd look really cute, too."
"...huh?"
"Hmm?"
"You um you think I'm cute?"
"OH um well I mean...yea. I think you're really pretty."
Both teens couldn't hold their blushes in any longer. Zatanna bit her lip as Robin brushed the back of his head. Regaining his composure, he got back to the real reason he called.
"Hey so, I called to ask if um, you'd like to hang out tomorrow. There's a carnival and-"
"YES!" she answered a little too eagerly
"Oh um. Cool. Meet at the Cave say 2pm?"
"Perfect!"
The next day, Robin waited in the cave in a red t-shirt and jeans. He called her the first time yesterday. Honestly, he wasn't entirely sure what he was thinking. Asking for her number went against every bone in his body. Batman's way of life was to close off all attachments. Never trust anyone or get too close to anybody. Robin thought it'd be easy since he felt like he never really could love again after losing his parents. And yet, she made him do crazy things. From the moment she shyly stepped into the cave, he was hopeless. When she smirked, asked to be kidnapped, and then played with words like he did, he was head over heels in the moment. He really wasn't sure what he felt with her, but he knew that he couldn't get her smile out of her mind. He thought about her eyes all the time.
"Recognized: Zatanna A-03"
Robin whirled around to greet his friend, date? Friend! His feet decided at this moment to root themselves into the ground. Zatanna walked in with a very simple outfit. Just a pair of sparkly jeans and a white tank top. She wore her hair down and put on some minimal blush on her face. To Robin though, she looked like an angel. She was beautiful and she didn't even try. The closer she got to him, the more breathless she felt.
"Hey Rob!"
"H-hey Zee!"
"You ok? You seem a little red."
"Oh! It's uh nothing. You're just...you're really pretty today."
"Um wow. I mean. It's nothing really. I barely have any make up on."
"No really. I think you're pretty. You don't have to be modest."
"T-thank you," she shyly blushed
Something took over Robin in that very moment. He stepped closer to Zatanna. She looked up to see his face mere inches from hers. Instinctively, she bit her lip.
"However," he began, "modesty is just so hard to find"
"Yea, it is."
Emotion and want completely overruled inhibitions as Robin cupped her face with both hands and Zatanna rested hers on his chest. Their lips met in soft kiss. Their lips moved sweetly and gently in sync. Neither wanted to let go as they both wanted to savor their very first kiss together. There was a taste of cherry from Zatanna's lipstick and a hint of mint from the Altoid Robin chewed on earlier. The mixture was intoxicating as they continued to make out in the middle of the cave. Robin shifted his left hand to back of her neck and his right hand to her waist as she wrapped both her arms around his neck. Finally, they broke apart. Their first kiss. It was everything they wished it would be. Both forgot how to speak. Zatanna was giddy. Her mysterious crush actually returned her feelings. Robin was stunned. Five years after his parents' death, after he thought he couldn't love again, here he was hopeless, breathless. He was head over heels in the moment. He never thought he'd get hit by this lovebug again...
