Until I Found You

Christmas was supposed to be a time of joy, a time of cheerful get-togethers and opportunities to reflect on the year. Sadly, Zatanna hadn't felt that kind of holiday spirit for quite some time…not since he left.

So now here she was, nursing a cup of mulled wine at the League's annual Christmas party. There was some light holiday music in the background as all the heroes and their loved ones buzzed about. Clark appeared to be helicoptering around Lois. Ever the protector, although this wasn't surprising given that Lois was now seven months pregnant. Barry and Bart kept zooming back and forth from the buffet table trying to vacuum every morsel of food they could find before Iris gave them a glare. From the corner of her eye, Zatanna could spot Dinah leaning against Ollie a little, possibly after a few too many cups of the wine. Despite being in a room filled with superheroes, the only people who could understand the stresses that come with a double life in the league, Zatanna felt so lonely. Raquel opted to stay home and take care of Amistad. Kaldur returned to Atlantis to be with his family. Conner and M'gann stayed in Happy Harbor. Apparently, there was some faculty function at the school M'gann worked at, and everyone wanted a piece of her famous peppermint cookies. Artemis didn't return her call. And him? She and him hadn't talked in quite some time. Not because of animosity of course. He was just off-the-grid, difficult to track down. Or maybe she was too much of a coward to go and find him…

First Christmas

*KNOCK KNOCK*

"M'gann! Thank you but I am stuffed to the BRIM in peppermint cookies!" Zatanna called out as she walked to the door."

*WOOSH*

"Seriously! No more…..Oh! Hi Rob!" she greeted realizing the Boy Wonder, not Ms. Martian, was standing at her door.

"Heya Zee! You busy?"

"Uhhh no not really? Why?"

"You wanna go somewhere?" he shrugged, smiling sweetly.

"A-are you asking me out?" she stammered, blush rising in her cheeks.

"N-not necessarily! Could just be two friends going…..er out?"

She bit her lip in contemplation. Here he was dressed in his usual casual attire: a sweater, dark jacket, jeans, and his mysterious sunglasses. However, his hair was styled. His collar neatly pressed. And even a hint of cologne. This was a date, a Christmas date, and it warmed her heart to see him put in so much effort.

"Sure. Where are we going?" she smiled back.

"Can't tell you that," he replied with his own mischievous smirk.

"Rob. I need to know if I should bring warm clothes or not."

"O-oh. Right. Uhh dress warmly," he scratched his head as his cocky façade washed away.

###

A Zeta tube ride later, they ended up right in the middle of New York City, Manhattan specifically. Snow was gently falling as the huge crowds of people just kept moving along. Everything was hustling and bustling as Robin dragged her through the crowds. It was chilly, but that didn't stop them from enjoying the Winter Village. They spent the afternoon hopping from booth to booth and enjoying various holiday treats from chocolate bonbons to potato crisps. This was also a great opportunity for some holiday shopping!

"Do you think Artemis would like this sweater?" Zatanna asked.

"The green one? I mean I guess."

"What? It's definitely her style!"

"Yea, but c'mon Zee. How about some flair! Something to really bring some holiday cheer!"

"Rob that's a gift YOU would give her!"

"Yea, but it'd be extra hilarious if YOU gave it to her," he snickered.

"I guess," she rolled her eye, spotting a big ugly green sweater adorned with arrows and snowflakes.

###

After finishing their Christmas shopping, Robin whisked them towards their next destination. It was already dark so Zatanna suspected whatever was next would probably have something to do with lights. Her suspicions were proven right when she spotted the big Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in the distance.

"Wait here," Robin commanded.

"Huh?"

"I just uh gotta make sure our spot isn't taken."

"You can reserve spots for a tree lighting ceremony?!"

"….sorta," he winked before disappearing.

As Zatana waited on the sidewalk, her eyes caught a glimpse of something really shiny. She looked up realizing they had stopped right in front of a jewelry shop. It had long closed by now, but some of the products were still on display at the window. Particularly, a set of amethyst earrings. They were simple studs with the purple jewels set in the center, but they were glistening in the light. They were so beautiful and elegant. However, Zatanna frowned. There was no way she could afford earrings like these.

"Ready?" Rob asked with his face right next to hers.

"Ah! Rob!"

"Hehehe."

"Sigh You dweeb! Is our spot ready yet?"

"You betcha. Just gotta take the elevator up."

"Eleva-EEP"

Without warning, Robin grabbed her waist tightly pressing their bodies as close as possible. With a wink she couldn't see past the sunglasses and a smirk, he shot a grappling hook up the building and pulled them upwards. Despite the abrupt ride up, they managed to land gracefully on a rooftop. At the edge, there was a little picnic blanket with a basket to the side. Zatanna walked over and was in awe of the straight, clear view of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, ready to be lit.

"Wow. Robin this is amazing!"

"Yea. I figured you wouldn't want to be smushed in the crowds down there. Plus, the view up here I think is prettier" he said not even looking at the tree.

"And you made us a little picnic?"

"Dinner and a show."

They sat down before Robin pulled out some sandwiches and a bottle of sparkling apple cider. As he poured the drink into two glasses, Zatanna couldn't help but smile and blush. She scooted closer to him and brushed some stray hair out of his face.

"You really put a lot of effort into two friends just hanging out," she smiled.

"Well, we hung out, didn't we?" he chuckled, handing her the glass.

"True. But are we just friends?"

"I uh. I dunno."

Despite being put on the spot, Robin was saved by the announcer at the bottom who was getting the crowd hyped up for the tree lighting. Rob breathed a sigh of relief as Zatanna decided to drop the subject. However, she scooted even closer wrapping her arms around his and resting her head on his shoulder. As the people down below plugged the power cord in and the tree gradually illuminated, she leaned up and whispered in his ear.

"Thank you for taking me out today…more than a friend," she whispered and kissed his cheek.

###

The next morning, Zee woke up simply glowing and beaming. Admittedly, she was a little disappointed that Robin didn't kiss her when he dropped her off at the Cave, but baby steps. After stretching, Zatanna opened the door hoping to get some breakfast. Instead, a little box was waiting for her right in front of her room. It was wrapped neatly in red wrapping paper and adorned with little snowflakes. Curious, she ripped through the paper and found a little velvet jewelry box. Her heart stopped. There was no way. There was absolutely no conceivable way…

"Oh my God," she gasped.

Opening the box revealed two amethyst earrings. There was cheeky hand-written note under the lid, a note Zatanna would end up cherishing for a long time…

"To first Christmases…"

Second Christmas

They were dating! They were absolutely with no question dating! No more meaningless flirting. No more teasing. No more sensuous tension. Robin was her boyfriend and Zatanna was his girlfriend. It absolutely terrified her to pull him into that kiss on New Year's Day, but ultimately it was the best decision she ever made. If the group thought they were annoying before, Robin and Zatanna were now insufferably inseparable. Always clinging together, sneaking little kisses here and there. Even M'gann got tired of the constant PDA. But Robin and Zatanna did not care one bit. Zatanna simply let her purple earrings shine in the light as Artemis grumbled in her green ugly Christmas sweater.

Speaking of Christmas, Zatanna was once again kidnapped by her now boyfriend. This time, she was told to dress more comfortably. And to beware of humidity. Admittedly, a lot of tropical beach-themed places rolled through her mind first. She did not expect…

"Disneyworld?!" she exclaimed.

"Yea! I mean they really do ham it up with all the decorations, and Christmas themed dress ups. And the parade with Santa!"

"Ehehehe…" she nervously chuckled.

Spending Christmas at an overpriced them park was not necessarily at the top of her list of things to do. But he looked so happy and excited. And maybe she could find something to enjoy as well.

"Baby," she smiled, "If you're happy. I'm happy."

###

As it turned out, going to Disneyworld as a couple was actually more fun than Zee realized. She and Robin immediately got matching candy-cane Mickey ears and practically blew through all the rides together. Not a single one was left off from Space Mountain to Pirates of the Caribbean to Expedition Everest and so much more. Again, letting her boyfriend indulge a bit, Zatanna even went with him to the Star Wars section to get a custom-made lightsaber.

At the end of the day, the two found a little spot at a café ready for the big fireworks display to come on at any moment. Both exhausted from trekking around and taking pictures with characters here and there, Robin and Zee were content to just sit back with cups of hot cocoa.

"Did you have fun?" he asked.

"Honestly, yea, I did. Plus watching Goofy put you in a headlock might be the funniest thing I've seen in a long time."

"Hahhaah. Please don't send that picture around. I'll never hear the end of it."

"I still can't believe you pissed off Goofy. He's sooo chill."

"Yea…"

Soon the music started the blare as Tinkerbell began making her way towards the top of the castle. Everyone remained silent waiting for the little fairy to light up the festivities. Interestingly enough, Robin tapped Zatanna's thigh signaling her to get closer.

"Hey by the way," he whispered, "Did you know you can get custom Mickey ears with your names embroidered on the back?"

"Really? That's sounds so cute! But it's so late. Maybe next time then."

"Why wait?"

"Huh?"

"Here's yours," he handed her a set with 'Zee' embroidered in purple thread.

"Ohh my gosh!? How? We spent the whole day together!?"

"Long bathroom break," he smirked.

"Ugh. You're both impossible and amazing."

"Wanna see mine?"

"Huh?"

He handed her another set of Mickey ears, purposefully hiding the name on the back for dramatic effect. She turned it over expecting to find the word 'Robin'. But instead, she found a name. Well, technically she found the word 'Dick'. Thinking it was a crude joke, Zatanna turned towards her boyfriend ready to scold him. But she didn't. She stopped as the air left her lungs. Tears welled up in her eyes dripping on the sunglasses that sat on the table. Slowly her hand reached and cupped his face. He leaned forward, relaxing into her palm.

*BANNG BOOM BANNNG*

Fireworks were exploding and bursting in the air, but Zatanna didn't care. It was as if she couldn't hear a single thing except his voice. All her senses were tuned to him, just him and his beautiful blue eyes.

"Hi, Zee. My name is Dick. Dick Grayson…"

Fourth Christmas

This was now a yearly tradition. A must for these two. Of course, there were the Christmas parties and the family dinners and whatnot, but Dick and Zee cherished their annual Christmas kidnapping with just the two of them. Last year, they had gone to Tokyo to experience a real Japanese couples holiday. It was rather enlightening, as Zatanna did not expect to get a full Christmas party pack from KFC of all places. It even came with a Christmas cake! However, this year, Zatanna slightly hinted she'd like to go somewhere a bit quieter. Their first three Christmases together were New York, Disneyworld, and Tokyo. Some peace and serenity would be nice. Dick happily obliged. This year, he asked her to dress warmly again. Upon leaving the Zeta tube, Zatanna understood why.

Snow crunched under their boots as they trekked through the evergreen forest. Zee held his hand tightly partially because she craved his touch but mostly to avoid getting separated and lost. A few stomps later, they arrived at a beautiful wood cabin that had a deck leading out to a frozen pond.

"Whoaaa," she exclaimed.

"Neat huh?"

"How'd you even find this place? There's no way it's listed on AirBnb…"

"Actually, Bruce owns the place. It's secluded and private enough to avoid the press, but still close enough to a town to get supplies should we need any."

"Damn, Perks of being uber rich."

"The pond should be frozen enough to skate on. And the slopes around here are pretty fun too!"

"I can't wait! Dick, this is PERFECT!"

###

*WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH*

"Catch me if you can Boy Wonder!"

"If you'd stop using your little speed spell I just might!"

Down the snowy slopes they went speeding through the fluffy sheets like they were nothing. Zee kept perfect balance on her purple skis as Dick furiously tried chasing her down on his blue snowboard. There might have been a bit of mischief on Zee's part as her skis did seem ever so faster and slicker.

"Better hurry, Dick. I can see the bottom already," she giggled.

"Well take a good look. The next thing you'll see is my back and my snow dust!"

"Huh?"

Somehow indeedy, Dick was able to press forward and pass Zatanna. To be even cheekier, he even shifted slightly so that he was directly in front of her. Despite being as low as possible, Zee could only watch as Dick was able to garner more momentum and actually started pulling away. Huffing, she mumbled another speed spell which accelerated her greatly. But greater speeds meant less control. Soon she was slipping on her skis and feel forward, right towards…

"DIIIICK!" she screamed.

"Huh!?"

Turning around, Dick was met with a forward-falling Zatanna. Acting solely on instinct, he turned completely to face her and caught her in his arms. The two lovers tumbled down the rest of the way almost forming a giant snowball that pinned them together. Somehow, someway, Dick ended up on the bottom with Zee tightly hugging and straddling him on top. As the snow cleared and the two brushed their hair of snow, Dick could only smile at the raven-haired beauty sitting on top of him.

"What's got you all smug looking?" she asked.

"Well, incredibly traumatic accident slash crisis averted aside, I believe I won," he smirked noting that his head had crossed their finish line.

"Look again, Boy Wonder," she now smirked.

Dick looked up and his exuberance immediately fell off his face. Her hand was literally just an inch above his head and passed the line.

"OH COME ON!"

###

A while later, after a warm soak in the hot tub, Zatanna sat on the rug by the fireplace watching the embers dance and crackle. Dick settled down next to her with his own blanket and two steaming mugs of hot cocoa. He handed her the purple mug before they clinked drinks and enjoyed the sweet liquid.

"Mmm this is divine," she sighed.

"I should hope so. It's Alfred's special blend!"

"Hehe yea, but I sometimes worry that even you could mess up perfection."

"Ouch. Thanks."

"Hehe."

To gain a bit more warmth, Dick and Zee opened up their blankets and scooted as close to each other as possible. Now with two layers of blankets and their own body heat, they were as cozy as can be. Zatanna curled into Dick's neck a bit and nuzzled into him. He wrapped his arm around her and held her close as they continued watching the fire.

"Thank you, Dick."

"Hmm?"

"For these Christmas kidnappings. I really appreciate them."

"Of course, Zee. Anything for you."

"Even Disneyworld?"

"…ok Disneyworld might've been slightly a selfish want."

"But still an unforgettable kidnapping. One of the best," she kissed his cheek, "You really know how to treat a girl."

"Hehe I'm glad to hear it. Because honestly, I'm just making it up as I go."

"Riiight. Infamous heartthrob Dick Grayson doesn't know how to woo a girl," she rolled her eyes.

"I don't…"

"…..Wait really?"

"I've only ever tried to woo one girl."

"O-Oh?"

"And she's so beautiful under the warm glow of a fire."

"…heheheh," she bit her lip trying to stifle her giggle, "Wow."

"Is it working?" he chuckled with her.

"…Yes."

He leaned forward to kiss her. Pressing her hand against his cheek, she deepened the kiss. Her tongue brushed against his lips begging for entrance. Soon, his lips parted, allowing their tongues to dance. Wanting him even closer, Zee wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled. They tumbled down to the rug with her pushing him as close to her lips as possible. As opposed to outside in the snow, Dick was now on top. He was hugging her, but also straining to avoid putting all his weight down. However, her hips bucked into his as they made out on the rug. Pulling back a bit, he looked down into her eyes. Beautiful blue with a hint of gold from the fire. She blinked once or twice, pursing her lips. There was a hint of nervousness, but it was mixed with a look of desire, of longing.

"Make love to me, Dick," she whispered with a whimper.

Dick froze for a moment. Though he heard her clearly, he still couldn't believe what she was asking. They'd never reached this level of intimacy before, yet here she was, asking him to take things to the next level, a level from which they can never return.

"Please?" Zatanna asked again.

With much more conviction, Dick leaned down again, this time kissing her neck. Zee ran her fingers through his hair, keeping him in place. She could feel him shift a bit to kiss the other side. His movements were slow, careful, and calculated. Even when he lifted up her sweater to reveal her chest, he didn't dive in immediately. He just looked at her. A hint of desire, but mostly of admiration.

"You're so beautiful," he whispered.

She had no answer. All Zatanna knew was that her face must have been redder and brighter than Rudolph's nose. Slowly, Dick kissed her before giving her breasts more attention. Trying to drag this foreplay and tension even further, he took one nipple in his mouth. As Zatanna writhed against his lips sucking her nipple, Dick let his tongue run slow languid circles around the little nub. He was being gentle, sensual, and kind. And that was how the rest of the night went. Dick took his time kissing every part of her bare body. She did the same, tracing the contours of his muscles with her fingers. Even when he finally thrusted inside her for the first time, the pain was minimal. He peppered her with kisses asking if she was ok at every turn. And honestly, she was in absolute bliss and couldn't get enough of him.

By morning, her legs felt like jelly. Her back was also kinda sore from spending the night on the rug, but she didn't care. Zatanna rolled and curled into Dick's warm chest. To his credit, he held her tightly, making up for the missing warmth now that the fire was put out. When Zatanna started feeling his fingers card through her hair, she looked up at his blue eyes. He smiled and then kissed her forehead. Happy, she nuzzled deeper into his neck. Christmas had been many firsts for them: First Date, first time without mask, and now their first time truly being together.

"Dick, you're so perfect…"

###

Since that faithful Christmas, Dick and Zee could not get enough of each other. Now that they craved each other's touch, their displays of affection became even MORE public. It even became a game of sorts amongst their peers. Points for when Zee clung to Dick's arm, or when he'd hold her by the waist. More points for catching them kissing along with a multiplier if they made out for several minutes. Bonus points if anyone spotted them sneaking away for some….privacy. Luckily for the crew, Dick and Zee snuck away for privacy very often. On the outside to everyone, they were the perfect couple. Always supporting each other, openly loving one another. That was probably why things looked so dour once it all came crumbling down.

Sixth Christmas

It was the first time she was alone. There would be no Boy Wonder tapping at her window. There would be no Dick Grayson at her door with flowers. There would be no kidnapping. It was over. Zatanna continuously tried to block out why they fought in the first place. Such a memory always broke her heart. But even then, nothing was worse than the last time she saw him, just after Wally's funeral…

"You're leaving?"

"Yea."

"But why?"

"I need time to myself, Zee. I-I did a lot of bad things."

"That doesn't mean you have to go. There's no need for exile!"

"Zee, I need this. I-I killed Wally…"

"No you didn't! Stop blaming yourself for that!"

"Zee, please. I need some time to figure things out. I-I need a break."

"I-but Dick….ok"

She remembered the look on his face when she accepted his plea. It almost looked like shock as if he was hoping she'd protest more, that she'd press on to keep him in place. But they had already been broken up for half a year. She loved him. There was no doubt, but she was also afraid to press on any further. Having received a smile and a wink, Zatanna watched as Dick entered the Zeta tube and let him go.

That was June. He hadn't contacted her since. There were days when she felt like she should take the initiative and text him, but the moment just never felt right. Dick was grieving. His best friend died, and he probably still insisted it was his fault. If she were stronger, Zatanna might've pushed back and tried to free him from his guilt. But that was not her job anymore. Just like it wasn't his job to kidnap her on Christmas anymore…

Days turned to months and turned to years. Dick returned and reclaimed his Nightwing moniker. He wasn't team leader anymore, just simply a freelance hero, helping people where he could. Despite having zero contact during his sabbatical, he and Zatanna remained a tad icy. No animosity, but a lot of their interactions were short. Simple greetings and professional conversations when one needed the other for hero business. It was awkward. It was painful. Zatanna couldn't believe how difficult it was to speak to Dick. She had hoped they could work things out once he returned with a supposedly clear head. But honestly, the writing was on the wall when he asked Artemis to be his "undercover date" for a mission. A role that used to be exclusively hers.

And so Zatanna decided if Dick wasn't going to make a move, neither would she. The market was open and it was time to see who was buying….or selling…..(metaphors were hard). A major drawback of breaking up with a long-term boyfriend was that getting back into the dating scene was much more difficult than anticipated.

At first, there was Nick. He seemed nice and was a magician just like her. But he was dumped immediately when she realized he only wanted her for a power syphoning ceremony to become more powerful.

She tried again with Sebastian, but all he ever did was talk about himself. Honestly, Zatanna guessed he didn't even remember her name. There was no second date.

One day, she ran into guy named Peter. He was cute and a little shy. He reminded her of Dick in their early years. They went to dinner and everything at first was going smoothly. He was sweet. He listened intently about her blossoming show business, they joked over 80's rock, and he even paid for the meal. There was just one problem. When Peter started talking, all he could ever think about was this other girl. Every chance he got, he'd talk about how wonderful and kind she was. Apparently, this mystery girl was also in showbiz. She was also flirty, fiery, sassy, but also gentle and understanding. It was clear that even though Peter took this date with her, he was in love with someone else.

And then, there was John. John Constantine. Zatanna had heard minor stories from Bruce about John. A powerful wizard in his own right but wasn't very good at following the rules. The League consulted the cigarette smoking Brit from time to time, but mainly when they needed an off-the-wall angle on something. They had met on a mission, and honestly, he infuriated her. Contradicting her at every turn. "No Zee, you gotta say it like this." "I wouldn't do that, love. You could bring a shitstorm down on us." "Oy, are you just here as pretty legs or are ya gonna do something?" So, it genuinely surprised her when he showed up at her door and asked to buy her a drink.

"What are we doing here, John?"

"I just figured a pretty lady like yourself could use a pint and some company."

"Uh huh…You here to criticize me again?"

"Alright, mayyybe I was a lil too harsh on ye. But only because I think you've got potential."

"Pft. I've heard that line before."

"No I'm serious. I think you've got boundless power. It's more the way you think I reckon."

"Oh?"

"Yea. You're too straightforward and combative. Fireball here. Lightning bolt there. You're a magician. An illusionist. Be more creative!"

And somehow, that sparked something in Zatanna. Despite the harsh beginnings, John actually developed a bit of a soft spot for Zatanna. His visits became more frequent as he showed her newer spells from books she'd never even heard of. More advanced glamour spells became a breeze. The training regimen actually increased her magical stamina preventing early fatigue from her big combat spells. He even showed her how to summon a light-based familiar to help her with everything from fighting to even just getting a cup of coffee. It was nice. Zatanna felt so free connecting with someone once again. To have someone to talk to and confide in. She grew so comfortable with John that she even let him call her Zee, a nickname that was once reserved for him…

However, even with the hunky-dory honeymoon phase, there was something amiss. It was a hill Zatanna was determined to get over. She needed to move on. One night, after a few pints at the pub, Zatanna and John groggily retreated to his flat in London. She was wanting and needy. Right when they stepped inside the door, Zatanna pulled his loosely fitting tie and pressed her lips to his. They were salty from the pub peanuts, and the smell of smoke irritated her. But she pressed on. He shed his coat and pushed her towards the bed. They fell with a thud, jolting Zee a bit. They never broke lip contact, but something was amiss. He was aggressive and eager. His tongue didn't ask for permission. It pushed its way into her mouth. His hands weren't caressing her. They were fondling her. He wasn't gentle or kind. He wasn't there to make love. He was there for just his own pleasure. John moved to kiss her neck like he once did, but she couldn't help but squirm. All she could think about was his dark messy hair, his strong hands that treated her almost like she was glass, and his deep deep blue eyes. Finally, Zatanna sobered up once John ripped her blouse open.

"John. Stop."

He kissed her cheek.

"Stop, please, right now."

He moved to kiss her lips, but he didn't get much farther.

"I SAID STOP!" she growled pushing him off her.

"Oy?! What's the matter, Zee?" he fell with a thud.

"I-I'm sorry. I-I can't do this…"

"W-what did I do?"

"N-nothing. I just…..I can't do this, John. I-I have to go."

Hurriedly, Zatanna grabbed her coat and covered up. Fumbling around she picked up her shoes and purse and beelined towards the door. John tried to catch up but tripped over his own socks.

"Zee! Come back! Let's talk about this!"

Just as she got to the door, Zatanna turned back and looked at him. But something was eating at her. Her heart pounded, practically screaming at her that this wasn't right, it didn't feel right. Conviction now invigorated her. Coldly, she turned her face away.

"My name is Zatanna. Only he can call me 'Zee'"

With that, Zatanna walked out the door and closed it behind her. She never saw John again…

Present Day

Reminiscing about Christmases past did not lighten her mood like she thought. But then again, Christmases without him hadn't been stellar, and Zatanna was horrible at hiding her distaste for the holiday. She'd always get mopey and made it no secret that she just wanted to get to the New Year. Thus, her current presence at the League Christmas party was quite the surprise. But what's a girl with no other plans to do?

*ZOOM*

In the blink of an eye, Zatanna's nearly empty wine glass was replaced with a full one. Standing before her in red and yellow and holding a plate full of mini sausages was none other than Bart Allen himself, formerly Impulse and currently Kid Flash.

"Well well well, ain't this a surprise!"

"Happy Holidays, Bart."

"Holy smokes! An appearance at a Christmas party AND a holiday greeting? Did you get a visit from some ghosts, Ms. HumbugZee?"

"Hey!" she growled at him, showing her distaste for the nickname.

"My bad my bad! Just asking. You're normally not a fan of Christmas."

"I'm…..not. Not that much anyway. But I figured I might as well take advantage of free food and drinks."

"Well, I mean technically it's not free. Batman paid for it all."

"Yea yea."

"Mini sausage?" he asked extending a piece.

"No thanks."

"Suit yourself!"

*ZOOM*

With Bart gone, Zatanna felt compelled to find a new distraction. Perhaps some comments on her latest show. Her manager, Kaley, suggested doing an online show to drum up hype for her future live outings.

Willdebill: Yooo this show is awesome!

samtheboss_: Facts. Still can't figure out how she pulled that trick off

4shur4: Que buenisima! Zatanna you are AMAZING JAJAJA

Condottiere Zatara: Love love love it! Can't wait for the live show!

Yuyuxx: I swear, Zatanna is the best magician all around!

TimeLord27: Epic epic epic! Just what the Doctor ordered!

Ogisa: Ahhh fantastic stuff!

cest_inutile: Ugh please please please do a joint show with Haly's Circus! You guys would be superb

ChalantandBatfamaremyreasontolive: OMG LOVE THIS!

The enthusiasm of the comments did lighten her mood just a bit. It was great to hear that the shows were slowly garnering their own following. Justice League fame was one thing, but Zatanna always dreamed of making it onto the big stage. Her tiny speck of holiday cheer sunk slightly as she remembered….he was always the one to encourage her stage performing dreams.

*RING RING*

Pulled away from her thoughts, Zatanna opened her phone to find texts from her old high school friend, Cecily.

Cecily: Tanna, where r u rn?

Zatanna: Uhhh business trip…

Cecily: Cancel. You need to check out this show…

Zatanna: Sorry CC. I can't really just ditch and run

Cecily: Yes you can! You hate going to those JL parties anyway!

Zatanna: How did you…..nvr mind. What's so important about this show anyway?

Cecily: Just go! Please! As your friend, I'm begging you. This show will change your life

Zatanna: Wait? Ur not coming with?

Cecily: Please trust me. This is a show you'll want to see by urself…

Germany (Still Present Day)

Begrudgingly, Zatanna left the party and headed towards the location Cecily sent her. Of all the things to expect at a place called Krowny's Point, a circus was not one of them. Her first immediate thought was that Cecily wanted her to join a circus and perform. Though Zee scoffed at the idea (she was her own headliner after all), she purchased a ticket. CC did say this show would change her life somehow. Although the name Haly sounded oddly familiar…

###

Up to this point, Zee was starting to doubt Cecily's intuition. It wasn't that the show was boring. The acts themselves were very entertaining, but to Zatanna, they felt like any other circus. A lion tamer here, a clown there, strongman lifting elephants, yada yada yada. However, like any proper show, the best was saved for last.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Thank you all again for choosing to spend your holiday with us!" the ringleader announced in the center, "To close out the night, we at Haly's Circus like to end on a bit of flair, intrigue, suspense, and maybe a little…DANGER!"

After shouting that last word, Haly pointed to the top of the tent. All the spotlights lit up the raised platforms and rigging. From the shadows, a lone figure jumped from the platform and caught one of the trapeze handles. Like a bird he swung and soared through the air. At the apex of the swing, he jumped, somersaulting three times before grabbing another rope. The daring figure pulled himself up and hung with his arm stretched out. He was posing, basking in the applause and cheers from the crowd.

"Put your hands together for our very own DARING DAN DANGER!"

Zatanna could only sit in shock. She was in awe. Her mouth agape and her eyes unwavering. There he was. He may be in a white leotard wearing a domino mask, but she'd recognize his beautiful body anywhere…

###

Unfortunately, even after finally finding him after all this time, Zatanna still found it difficult to muster up the courage to say hi. As she awkwardly stood outside the performers' lounge, she twiddled her thumbs in contemplation. What was she supposed to say? It wasn't like they hadn't seen each other. Things were just not the same as they once were. But she wanted them to be. She wanted to laugh with him, to lean against his arm and shoulders in time of need, to feel comfortable around him again.

"Hey, I know you!" a voice chimed in.

"Huh?" Zee turned around.

Standing before her was a tall, muscular gentleman. He had a kind smile and a twirling mustache that elicited a giggle from Zatanna. Immediately, she recognized him as The Strongman of the crew.

"H-hi. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be intruding," she apologized.

"You're that girl. From the picture."

"Huh?"

"Oh! Manners. Sorry, I'm Tommy."

"Right. Tommy the Strongman. Fantastic show by the way."

"Haha thank you thank you. Anyway, I'm now certain, you're the girl he keeps looking at."

"Uhh I beg your pardon."

"Dan. Dan Danger. Our trapeze guy. He keeps this photo of a girl with him almost everywhere he goes. It's usually in his wallet or pocket, but he pulls it out from time to time. Definitely before every show. He sticks it on his mirror just before showtime. Says it ground him."

"A-are you sure it's me?"

"Oh 100%. Raven hair. Blue eyes. A smile like that? It's either you or your twin sister!"

"I uh don't have a sister."

"Well, there's your answer then!"

All of a sudden, her doubts and fears washed away. She felt lost in the darkness before, but now? Now she found him, and he had been wanting to find her again as well. Zatanna turned to face the curtain, ready to face him head on. She nodded to Tommy, grateful for the encouragement, before walking forward. It wasn't hard to spot him in the crowd. Her lips actually quivered upon seeing him. His shirt was off. Towel in hand as he wiped some sweat and makeup off his face. There was no going back now. Well in theory anyway. As she walked towards his space, conflicting thoughts swirled around her mind. Should she be flirty? Should she be soft and shy? Should she approach carefully? They weren't on the best of terms. Should she greet him like an old friend? The next thing she knew, she was already at his table. He hadn't turned around yet probably pretending to be unaware. But they both knew that he had spotted her the moment she walked in. For whatever reason, Zee opted for flirty close friend he hadn't seen in a while. She leaned against his vanity table and grabbed his domino mask.

"Hehe great show," she cooed placing the domino mask over her face.

He turned to face her and smiled. It was the warmest smile she'd seen from him in years. After placing the towel around his shoulders, he walked up to her. His hand grasped the mask's edge and placed it on the table. Their eyes met as this quiet moment around them lingered.

"Hey," he broke the ice.

"Hey yourself."

"Fancy seeing you here."

"Eh. I was in town."

"Hmm," he chuckled, "For how long."

"How long do you want me?"

"Long enough to get some coffee?"

It took her a minute to respond. Was this the beginning? Were they finally starting to mend fences? She looked at his mirror and spotted that particular photo Tommy was going on about. It was taped to the corner. Despite the traveling circus antics and cramped wallet space, the photo looked pristine. No crinkles. No fading of color. Clearly, Dick took great care of this photo.

"I could go for some coffee…"

###

After finding the one coffee shop that was open this late, Dick and Zee trekked to a hill that overlooked the circus. It was a little chilly, but the full moon illuminated their path and shined down upon them. They sat by an old tree and let the silence fall on them. It was comfortable as they simply looked down at the twinkling circus lights.

"Sooo," she started, "How long have you been doing this?"

"Uhh a few years now. I ran into Haly during my erm….time away. After Wally. I needed something to distract me, so he offered me a recurring role. When I feel like it, he'll let me escape as Dan Danger and perform. His one caveat is that if I join, I have to finish out the continental tour."

"Ahh. So that's why when you disappear, you're gone for quite some time."

"Yea. It's a way for me to run away for a while."

"Y'know most people go on vacation to hide from their stress. Running away to the circus is a new one."

"Hehe well, we've never been normal people, have we?"

"No. I guess not."

Another pause came about. Only the sounds of folks packing up down below and Dick sipping his coffee filled the air. Things seemed to be getting better, but there was still some minor tension.

"How've you been?" he asked.

"Good. Pretty good."

"I saw your livestream the other day. You were amazing."

"Thank you," she blushed.

"You were always amazing."

"Did you leave a comment?"

"Maybe."

"Dick…"

"If I did, you'll never find my username."

"Haha. Riiight."

Maybe things were ok. He made her laugh. Maybe something was still there. Maybe it was ok to poke forward a little bit. Still nervous, Zatanna brushed her hair back a bit causing a twinkle to catch Dick's eye.

"Y-you still wear those?"

"Huh?"

"The earrings, from when we went to New York."

"O-oh. Well, they're my favorite. I almost never take them off," she blushed.

"Wow..."

"Dick…"

"Hmm?"

"W-why do you keep a picture of me?" she asked hearing him crinkle his coffee cup slightly.

"I-you errr."

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"

"I miss you…" he interrupted her.

"O-oh…"

"I didn't like how we ended things. Honestly, I had half a mind to come knocking on your door and begging for forgiveness. But a lot of things went downhill at that time."

"I understand. But then….what about when you came back? From your break?"

"I dunno. I felt better. Able to grieve and accept Wally being gone. But I didn't feel like my best self. I didn't feel like someone you'd take back."

"Oh Dick," she scooted closer to him placing her hand on his chest, "I would've taken you back in a heartbeat."

"Really?"

"Yes! Absolutely!"

"But you deserve so much better."

"That's not true!" she pulled him in close for a hug whispering in his ear, "I-I also regret how we ended. Honestly, I've been such a wreck since we separated. It's like having this void in my heart that I've been unable to fill for so long. But after Wally died, I just didn't know how to approach you. I figured you needed time, and you'd come to me when you were ready…"

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry, too."

"Honestly, I was too afraid. You looked like you were doing so well. Your show was starting, you were getting bigger roles in more important missions. I wasn't good enough to be with you."

"Dick please stop!" she pulled back and cupped his face, "You are the most important person in my life. I just…I hate how long it took me to see it. Whenever I'm with you, I am the happiest person in the world. You fill me with confidence, with glee. You warm my heart even with just a smile. Dick Grayson you are worth your weight your gold and more. I love you. I have always loved you."

"Heh," he pressed his forehead to hers, "It's funny. I never really fell in love with anyone else. It's why I keep your picture with me."

"Heh. Dick, if anything, I'm not good enough for you."

"Don't say that."

"It's true! If we're being honest, when I lost you, I tried to fall in love again. I tried to force it. I kept lying to myself that I didn't need you anymore. I-I wanted to forget you…But I couldn't. It was like my heart was fighting against me. I couldn't stop thinking about you, how you make me feel. I genuinely never fell in love again, not till I found you."

"Zee, you always make me the happiest man on Earth. You are perfect just the way you are. I love how you put your left sock on first. Or how you pour milk in before the cereal, which is crazy, but I still love that about you. I love how you support me but also call me out when I'm being stupid."

"Like the glamour charm to hide Artemis?"

"Especially the glamour charm to hide Artemis. Zee, every waking day since I came back to the League, I just wanted to run up to you and kiss you. And honestly, maybe I should have. I'm sorry for not trying harder."

"I'm sorry for not trying at all. Can we start over?"

"A-are you asking to take me back?"

"Yes. I'm tired of lying to myself about how I feel. I see you as Nightwing and you look so tired. You look so sad. Please, Dick. Let me in again. Let me help you. Let me be the light to your darkness, and I'll be yours."

"I-I…"

"Kiss me. You said you wanted to."

"B-but…"

"Words aren't the only way to show how you feel…"

He was hesitant. Still scared. It still wasn't completely believable that the love of his life was sitting in his lap asking him to kiss her. But his heart was egging him on. His body leaned forward on its own. Finally, after so long, his lips met hers. She tasted sweet, like grapes and spices. It felt good to kiss her again. She in turn felt happiness wash over her. Her body relaxed to his touch as he hugged her waist. Her legs wrapped around him tightly. Their first kiss in ages sent sparks flying and electricity coursing through their veins. At first, he meant to simply kiss her quickly and pull away, but everything felt so right, so good. He just couldn't stop, not that she minded. If anything, she pulled him closer, never breaking lip contact. They tumbled with Zee pulling him down on top of her. They finally parted. Her legs were still wrapped around him. As the moonlight shined down on them, Dick couldn't help but take in Zee's beauty. He cupped her face with his hand keeping her steady. He wanted to be reminded of what he had been missing. Her blue eyes. Soft lips. Blushing red cheeks. Boldly trying to get his attention, Zatanna leaned into his palm and kissed it. Then she took his thumb in her mouth and lightly sucked on it. A little shocked, Dick watched as Zee maintained eye contact. Just like in that cabin many Christmases ago, she was sending a signal, an invitation.

"Make love to me, Dick…" she whimpered.

This time there was no hesitation. No need to ask again. He leaned down and gently nipped at her neck. His hands roamed, but they weren't rough. They were measured and smooth, as if they were gauging how far they could go. He was caressing her, holding her, making sure she was comfortable. She bucked her hips against him, telling him that it was ok to keep going because this is what she wanted, this is what she longed for. He propped himself up again letting the moonlight brush against her cheek.

"You're so beautiful," he whispered, "But do you really want this? From me?"

"Dick Grayson, you are all I want. I want to feel you again, to be loved by you again. So long as I have you, nothing else matters. Because I'd never fall again. I would never fall unless it's you I fall into…"

With that, he kissed her again, pressing his hands against her chest. Wanting to help him a bit, she lifted her shirt giving him access. He, in turn, sat up to take his shirt off. She actually shuddered seeing his body glisten under the moonlight. As he leaned down to kiss her again, Zatanna couldn't help but giggle. Cecily was right. This show definitely changed her life forever…

###

By morning, Zatanna awoke with a slightly stiff back. Not because she and Dick fucked on a grassy hill till morning, but the bed she was in felt really lumpy. Stretching and cracking her back a bit, Zatanna blinked a couple of times to wake herself up. She looked around and realized her surroundings were a little cramped. It was a simple living space. Tiny kitchen, a table skinny enough to barely fit two people. Clothes were strewn about here and there. Then it hit her. She was in a trailer, a trailer for a performing circus…..Dick's trailer. (AN: Oh, right. The poison. The poison for Kuzco…Kuzco's poison).

*CLICK*

Speaking of, the man of the hour walked in. His hair was unkempt, but his glowing smile warmed her up just as she expected. Dick placed a paper baggie on the counter along with a cup of coffee. He then crawled into bed with her and kissed her forehead.

"Good morning," he cooed.

"Morning."

"I went out and got you some food."

"So I see."

"I have to go to rehearsal and then help pack for the next stop. You're welcome to stay here as long as you like. But just a head's up, we leave at 4."

"Hmm. You make it sound like I should be gone by 4."

"W-well no. I mean. I'm just saying uh y'know. If you need to go or something that we'd be gone by 4. That's all. L-like I said you can stay as long as you like and-MMPH."

She kissed him quickly. After shutting him up, she parted and tapped his cheek.

"Then I want to stay with you. For the rest of the tour and forever after that."

"Z-Zee…"

"I watched you walk away from me once already, Dick Grayson. I'll be damned if that happens to me again. I'll never let you go again like I did…"

"Heh. I don't really want to be apart from you either, Zee, especially since we're together again. But Haly's a tiny bit strict on this one thing."

"Oh?"

"We only have room for family on the tour."

"Perfect. Then I'll fit in just fine."

"Huh?"

"I'm sure Haly won't mind if your lovely wife joined the tour for a bit?"

"W-wife?!"

"Hehe. Don't tell me the Daring Dan Danger forgot about his lovely life partner, Dana Danger?"

"…bahahahahaha," he leaned down to pepper her with kisses, "I love it. Dana Danger. It's a beautiful name."

"I would hope so. I spent all night coming up with it!"

Laughing and rolling around in bed, Dan and Dana ended up wrapping themselves under the covers. He'd probably end up late for rehearsal, but cuddling up warmly against his lovely "wife" was worth it.

"Merry Christmas, Dan. I'm glad I found you."

"Merry Christmas, Dana. Thank you for finding me."

AN: I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season. I ran into this song randomly on Youtube. Ironically, I found the cover by Kim Chaewon (from Le Sserafim) and I just fell in love with this song. It has that kinda that old timey ballad style and it's just so soothing and sweet. I know technically it's not a Christmas song, but SOME PEOPLE (you know who you are) were egging me on to write a Christmas Chalant fic. So I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.

It's kinda wild to me how s4 of Young Justice reignited my love for Chalant and led me down a path of fanfic writing. I've been reading fanfics since 2011-ish and honestly never expected to be writing for fun like this. I've really enjoyed the ride and hope to continue making many more stories in the future (but no more fandoms! Chalant, Spidey/MJ, and Kira/Lacus are enough for me haah).

Anywho, this'll be my last post for 2024. Hopefully 2025 will bring us all good health, good luck, and many more stories! Cheers everyone!
