Summary:
Class A's second year has started, but someone doesn't have the greatest start.
Kyoka was the only one to notice something was the slightest bit wrong. It started the first day of classes their second year. Aizawa announced he was still their homeroom teacher because he was the only staff willing to teach their class. He also announced that Mineta had been expelled and Shinso would be taking his place. There was a unanimous cheer from the girls, except for Uraraka, which stuck out as odd to Kyoka. Sure, she wasn't the main target of his harassment, sorry Yaoyorozu, but she still had to deal with him on occasion. She brushed it off as nothing to worry about, but it lingered in the back of her mind.
A few days later it happened again, something about Uraraka had Kyoka telling herself something was wrong. Midoriya had been going through his notes and had given himself a paper cut, and the way Uraraka had been staring at the cut, eyes not blinking, had given her the chills.
She hesitated after class for a moment wondering if she should tell Aizawa about this feeling, but then Mic burst through the door and next thing she knew Aizawa was zipping his sleeping bag over his head with a groan.
A week later after a battle simulation Kyoka wasn't the only one to notice Uraraka's odd behavior. Midoriya was walking beside her on the way back to the dorms, Kyoka trailing behind the two.
"Uraraka, I know you haven't been feeling the greatest lately but your teamwork was completely off today. Usually we have no problem working together but nothing we did today worked. Why haven't you been using your quirk lately?"
"Sorry Izuku, I'll try better next time, promise. My stomach hasn't been feeling the greatest." At the mention of her not feeling well Kyoka started listening closer to their conversation. Uraraka had better control over her quirk, her stomach shouldn't be bothering her after that fight.
"If you aren't feeling well you should go to the nurse, Uraraka." He was concerned, she was suspicious.
"I should be fine if I just lay down, silly Izuku." The tone of her voice wasn't quite right, and it made the hairs on Kyoka's neck stand up. They made the rest of the way back to the dorms in silence, and as Uraraka went upstairs she pulled him aside.
"How long has she been calling you Izuku?" She saw the look of confusion and sighed. "How long has it been since Uraraka has called you Deku or Midoriya?"
"Since classes started, I think? Why?" He was giving her a strange look.
"Have you noticed anything…off… with her lately?"
"Now that you mention it I caught her eating Kacchan's kimchi the other day." He said after thinking about it for a moment.
"The problem with that?" She raised a brow.
"One, its Kacchan's. Two, she hates spicy food."
"Let me know if you notice anything else." Kyoka's gaze went to the stairwell, she was getting a really bad feeling.
The next day nothing happened, so Kyoka invited Uraraka to her room to study that night for their upcoming rescue procedures test. As they were heading upstairs she noticed her hesitate on the empty second floor for just a moment, eyes darting between her and the empty hall, before continuing to follow her.
It was after they had been studying for a while that Kyoka heard it, a steady faint tapping. In an effort to distract herself from it she opened a drawer in her desk and brought out some mochi, something they both loved. She knew something was wrong when she saw the look of disgust on Uraraka's face as she turned it down. Maybe because it was a flavor she didn't like? Shrugging it off she continued with her studying, but all she heard was the faint tapping.
In an effort to locate it she had one of her earphone jacks quietly plug into the floor, but Uraraka noticed.
"Whatcha doing?" Uraraka asked as she leaned forward, and her hair caught Kyoka's attention. Normally when they studied last year her hair was piled in a single messy bun on top of her head. Lately she had been wearing it in two buns on the sides of her head.
"Listening for gossip. Apparently Hagakure and Ojiro were caught making out in his room and Kaminari and Kirishima won't leave them alone." Kyoka replied, as that was actually happening, but she was more focused on the taps. Three quick taps followed by three slower ones, then three more quick ones. The pattern was familiar but she couldn't place it. As she flipped through her old notes on rescue procedures she saw it.
Morse code, it was old fashioned but they had been required to learn the basics last year. SOS. Morse code for help. It was coming from the empty second floor.
Cautiously she slid her phone in her jacket pocket and stood up, her face carefully controlled to not show her panic. "Bathroom break," she said as she made her way to the small attached bathroom, closing herself in.
Quickly she pulled up Aizawa's number and sent a quick message, her fingers fumbling for the letters.Code RED! Do NOT text back! Call! After it sent she deleted the message from her phone, just in case. She flushed and ran the sink to avoid suspicion before she returned to her notes.
Minutes passed and still no -sensei, please….Just as Uraraka yawned Kyoka's phone rang. She glanced at the screen and saw Aizawa's contact on the screen.
"Hi Dad," she answered carefully, her thumb carefully turning down the volume so Uraraka couldn't overhear him.
"Jiro," his voice was controlled, but she could hear a hint of panic in it. "You do know what Code Red means?"
"Yes." She picked up her notes, hoping it seemed like nothing more than a family call.
"Are you sure you want me to call it in?"
"I'm sure Dad."
"Is there a reason you keep calling me Dad?"
"I have someone over studying." Her eyes flicked to Uraraka, who was concentrating just a bit too much on their conversation.
"Can you talk freely?" This time he couldn't mask the panic in his voice.
"Not really," Kyoka knew she was listening to every word.
"Do you know who it is and how many?"
"Just Uraraka."
"Shit," she heard the muffled curse, then heard him shouting at someone on his end. "Hizashi! Code Red! My class! Jiro!" She could hear him opening a door on his end. "Can you try to stay on the phone?"
"Yeah."
"If she gets suspicious you hang up, okay?"
"I will. Is the whole family coming?"
"Yes, I'm getting all the pros that I can. Is there anything else I should know?"
"Hmmmm… Before you throw the party some of the rooms on the second floor need cleaned." She looked up and saw Uraraka watching her. "I have to finish studying, sorry I can't help more with the party. But I'll see you soon, right?"
"Shit, halfway there." The line went dead.
She's smart,Aizawa thought as he raced to the enough to make an emergency call seem like nothing but a family call. I need a way to get the students out without making whoever was with her suspicious. hands acted and next thing he knew his phone was pressed to his ear and he was begging for them to pick.
"Aizawa-sensei?" Todoroki's voice answered, he could hear yelling in the background.
"Listen carefully, Todoroki. Start a fire. Get the class out of the dorm."
There was a pause before he answered, and the answer almost made him want to slam his head against the nearest surface. "Oh, Bakugo already started one, do you want me to start another?"
"No, just…. Just pull the fire alarm and get out of the dorms."
Kyoka let out a sigh of relief when she heard the fire alarms go off. She stood up and stretched, "Come on Uraraka, we all know the drill by now." She saw her hesitate before the brunette followed. "Who do you think set if off this time?" Kyoka asked as they made it out into the cool night air. She looked around as she waited for an answer, feeling her heart drop at the lack of teachers.
"Umm, I don't really know, who do you think it was?" Her voice was nervous, and she seemed on guard when Kyoka looked over at her. Over the brunette's shoulder she saw Aizawa and the other teachers arrive, Midnight and Mic staying with the students as the others rushed into the building.
The three teachers outside began to herd the students together, some of the students becoming uneasy. This wasn't their normal fire procedure. Most of the time it was just Aizawa with a fire extinguisher. Kyoka was watching her teachers over Uraraka's shoulder. She waited with baited breath for someone to come out of the dorms, tell her that this feeling was wrong. She saw Aizawa come out of the dorms, barely controlled rage on his face, saw him activate his quirk on Uraraka next to her, and jumped as Uraraka began to melt.
"Aww, you're no fun." Kyoka wasn't far enough back as Toga grabbed her by her hair, letting out a scream as she was jerked back, next thing she knew she was being used as a shield with a knife to her neck. She saw the teachers freeze, but one of the students jumped into action.
She saw a pink hand enter the corner of her vision as she was shoved forward, Toga losing her grip on her due to surprise. Ashido had jumped onto Toga's back and was attempting to put her into a headlock. Unfortunately, her acid was starting to leak from her hands, hindering her grip.
There was a blur of movement and then Bakugo was there. As he attempted to help his palms sparked, and much to everyone's surprise Toga caught fire. She let out an earsplitting screech and took off running towards the woods. Several students moved to go after her but Aizawa spoke up.
"If any of you move another step you will be expelled. The other dorms are in lockdown and Hound Dog and other pros are already patrolling the grounds. I already have one student that needs medical attention, one that needs to give a statement," his glare falls on Bakugo, "And one that needs to explain why he set the dorms on fire."
"I think the dorm is my fault, Aizawa-sensei." Ashido admitted sheepishly. "I think that when I'm stressed or angry my acid becomes flammable." In the background Midoriya could be heard muttering about quirks evolving. Aizawa just took a long, lingering look at his class, and let out the first of many frustrated groans for this school year.
"And this is exactly why you are still their teacher, Babe. You are the only teacher capable of dealing with their stunts. None of the other teachers wanted to deal with them." Mic said as he rested an arm around his husband's shoulders.
Kyoka stared at her reflection in her mirror, at the bags under her eyes, at her hair. She had decided to let it grow out, it was just brushing her shoulders. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She didn't want to be used like that again. She still felt Toga's grip on her hair, pulling at her scalp. She picked up the scissors she had set out and raised them.SNIP.
Kyoka sighed and shifted in her chair as she looked at Uraraka. She was thinner and paler than normal, with tubes coming out of both arms, she had IVs giving her nutrients and fluids. Apparently Toga had been giving her the bare minimum, just enough to keep her blood count up. Uraraka now had puncture scars on the inside of both elbows from where Toga had been taking her blood every chance she got, even with Recovery Girl's healing she would have to live with those scars. Most had already healed before they found her.
Kyoka had been told she could go back to the dorms, but she didn't want Uraraka to wake up alone. Before she passed out from Recovery Girl's healing she had managed to tell the pros what had happened.
Somehow Toga had managed to transform into Hagakure and had gotten into the dorms, just as Uraraka arrived to move her stuff into her room. They had confirmed with Hagakure that over break she had suffered a broken nose at a local park, courtesy of a dare from Ashido. Which meant that they were all being watched as that was how Toga had gotten enough blood to use her quirk.
She had been lured into one of the empty second floor rooms where she was sedated and tied up in the closet for two weeks. Toga had mixed sedatives into nutritional drinks to keep her sedated, but they had worn off and with Kyoka inviting Toga to study she didn't have a chance to give her more. She knew there were two students that would be able to hear her call for help.
Jiro almost jumped out of her seat when her phone went off, she glanced at it and was surprised to see Bakugo messaging her.
Bakugo: Hey Earphones, tell Pink Cheeks when she wakes up to message me. I've got news from Aizawa-sensei I need to tell her.
Kyoka: I'm not your personal messenger.
Bakugo: Just do it and stop pining over her you useless lesbian.
Kyoka: Says the gay disaster. How long have you been pining over Kiri?
Kyoka would later learn that Bakugo had blown up his phone, mainly because Kirishima had been reading his messages over his shoulder. Served him right.
The next day they got their first picture of year 2 on the wall. Uraraka was sitting up in her hospital bed, smiling weakly at the camera. She was still hooked up to fluids, but she had more color in her cheeks and her eyes were clear. Her hand was holding tightly to Jiro's, who's gaze was locked firmly on the other girl's face. Her hair now cropped close to her head, shorted than last year.
Just a couple weeks later they got their next picture. Bakugo had talked with Aizawa, and he agreed that if Uraraka was up for it they could have one of the gyms twice a week for Bakugo to help train Uraraka. She was hesitant at first, but she knew that Bakugo wouldn't offer unless he had a reason. She accepted.
The picture was taken after their first session where she had pushed herself too far. Which led to him giving in and giving her a piggyback ride back to the dorms. They were standing in the doorway, both clearly exhausted, still in their sweaty workout clothes. Uraraka had her eyes closed as her chin rested on his shoulder. Bakugo was glaring at whoever was taking the picture. Somehow he managed to hold her up with one arm as he flipped off the camera, but if you looked closely you could see the corner of his mouth tilted upwards in a small grin.
