Addison sat on the sofa, scrolling through the newly created myFace feed. Friend requests from Cameron Webber, Josslyn Jacks, and Sophie already accepted. She missed her friendship with Cam. They had been close and since she switched to Madison she barely saw him. Joss on the other hand, went to Madison as well, following in her sister Sophie's footsteps because their father would spare no expense to ensure his girls had the best education. Despite being in the same school and her parents being close friends with Jax, she never did get along well with Joss and Joss never seemed to make an effort either. They were too different and their opinions were clouded by their mother's opinions of each other. History had shown her that Alexis and Carly had never seen eye to eye and it seemed to be repeating itself. She was brought from her mindless scrolling when her phone buzzed in her hand, a message from Cam: Hey! I see your mom let you join the 21st Century. Followed by a laughing emoji.
I've always been in the 21st Century. But this was Soph…
Shoulda known. Hang soon?
Boathouse tomorrow? She took a risk. She missed her friend.
Three little dots..then a smiley face and a thumbs up. She returned the smiley face and closed the message feeling like she had something to look forward to for the first time since school had started when her brother walked into the room.
"Addie, do Mom and Dad know you joined myFace?"
"How do you know about that?" He held up his phone and saw her picture in his people you may know. "Oh… Don't tell them, Owen, please."
"I won't. Everyone is on this app. They can't expect you to make friends if you're not in the conversation."
"Thanks, O, you get it."
"It took me forever to convince them. I'm impressed. I didn't think you had something like this in you. But if you get nailed, I didn't know about it."
"Knew about what?" She said.
"Since when are you friends with Joss?" He asked as he friended his sister and sat down on the sofa.
"I'm not, but she requested me and she's Sophie's sister. What was I supposed to do?"
"Makes sense." He replied simply, reaching for the remote to flip on the TV. They settled on a popular sitcom rerun and were in a fit of laughter over something they'd seen a thousand times before when their parents got home.
Soon after Ned and Alexis walked in the door and heard their kids laughing in the living room. "Well this is something you don't see everyday." Ned stated.
"What?" Owen asked, innocently.
"You and your sister, actually spending time together, and in the same room." Alexis explained.
"Haha." Addison added sarcastically.
"Well it's nice to see, that's all." Ned said, simply.
"Can you turn that off for a few minutes?" Alexis asked as she sat on the nearby chair.
"And here we go." Addison muttered as she sat up.
"So, I'm sure you heard I talk too much, but I swear it's never when they're actually teaching. Just when we're supposed to be working."
"See? No Surprises." Alexis said as she looked at her husband. "We know and yes that's exactly what they said."
"We do need to start thinking about college though, buddy. Not tonight, but…"
"I know. My counselor is all over me about it."
As her parents started talking to Owen, Addison thought she might be able to escape and quietly got up and headed towards the stairs. "Freeze, peanut."
"I know, ok. I don't participate enough. I have good ideas on paper and need to participate. Other kids would benefit if I talked about what I thought more, blah blah blah. It's the same every year. I may have changed schools, but I'm still the same person."
"True, but how's math, Addie? Really." Ned asked, concerned. He knew she was working hard and he thought the teacher was a bit off base, but he wanted to hear it from her.
"Why? What did she say?"
"Cute, but not going to work." Alexis said, as her daughter tried to fish for information before she answered.
"It's fine. I don't know what you want me to say. Are my grades really that bad?"
"No, your grades are fine." Alexis assured her.
"Ok, so can I go?"
"Sure, go ahead." Ned said as Alexis touched his arm and he watched his daughter retreat to her room. "Owen, do you know what's going on with your sister?"
"No idea, but there's a lot of girl drama at Madison, Dad." He knew his sister had eaten lunch alone that afternoon. He watched from across the cafe when Sophie had stopped Addison from sitting at the table with her. He watched when his sister sat by herself, reading a book. But, he also wasn't going to get involved. Girls at school acted that way all the time and it eventually blew over.
"Gotcha." Ned replied, and touched Alexis' shoulder and she stood and followed him into the kitchen as Owen flipped the TV back on. Alexis grabbed two wine glasses and reached for the bottle sitting on the counter, left from the previous night and poured them both a glass. "It's like we talk about school and a switch flips. She's this totally different kid."
She handed Ned a glass. "I see it too."
"This is new territory for us. Kristen was so easy. She was outgoing, loved school, and I don't ever remember her struggling like this."
"They've always been very different kids. We can't compare their experiences. It was a big transition and she's not struggling, per say. She's just not talking to us about whatever she's worrying about."
"But the transition is over and she's always come to us. That's my point."
"Honey, I know you're worried about her. I am, too, but we made a plan for you to talk to her about some of the other things that came up this weekend. Let's see how that goes and readjust if we need to."
"Maybe you're right."
"I'm sorry, what was that?"
"You're too much."
"I adore you." She said as he leaned in and kissed her softly. "Come sit with me. I want to hear about how it went at L&B today." She said taking his hand and leading him outside for what was likely one of the last warmer nights of the fall.
The next day Addison found a spot in the library to eat lunch. She was tired of navigating the social politics of the lunchroom and didn't want to feel like she was burdening Sophie, by constantly seeking her out. It was clear, their friendship had shifted. She got through the day focusing on the fact that she was going to see Cameron that afternoon. When she told her mother she wanted Aubrey to drop her off at the Quartermaines because she was meeting Cam at the boathouse she seemed relieved. She knew her parents worried she was isolating herself, and she hoped this might just get them off her back when it came to school. She sat on the bench outside the boathouse and waited for him to arrive and messaged her sister, letting her know that despite the amount of people who added her on myFace things at Madison were status quo, but at least she knew what was going on and didn't feel in the dark.
"Cam!" She jumped up from the bench and put her phone in her pocket as she saw him walking towards her.
"Adds! I've missed you. School isn't the same without you."
"That's because I'm not there to help you with writing."
"I could say the same with you and math you know."
"Truth. I wish my parents didn't send me to Madison and that I was at PC High with you."
"What, private school full of silver spoon snobs? Present company excluded of course."
"Of course. I'm sorry I suck as a friend and haven't texted that much."
"You don't suck. I could have texted more, too. So how is it really?"
"It's a lot. I really don't fit in there."
"But Soph is there. I know she's a sophomore, but couldn't you eat lunch together?"
"Not exactly. She's a different person there. I'd rather not get into it. How's the soccer team doing?"
"Soccer is great. We're in the divisionals. Maybe you can come to one of the games soon."
"Sounds like a plan. Maybe you'll end up playing Owen. Do you want to meet up again after practice next week? We can do homework together, like we used to?"
"Totally. I have to write this essay about To Kill A Mockingbird and I've got nothing."
"Really? That book is so straightforward."
"And this is why I need you at PC High."
She smiled at him and took out her phone, changing the subject. "Hey, did you see this video? It's hysterical. Probably one of the stupidest things I've ever seen." She pulled up the video Owen had shown her earlier that week and they both burst out in a fit of laughter, over the latest video going viral.
"Addison?" Cam said as the video ended.
"Yeah."
"I meant what I said. I miss seeing you at school everyday."
"Me too. Let's take a selfie." She held up her phone and they took a picture.
"Hey, tag me when you post it."
"You want me to post it?"
"Why wouldn't you?"
"I don't know. Sure." She created the post. "Done."
