Blame it on a simple twist of fate.
~ Bob Dylan
It was over. The Fourth Shinobi War, Madara, Kaguya, Black Zetsu, it was all finally over. Naruto looked around surveying the haggard faces of his teammates and sensei, before noticing something through his peripheral vision. Turning his around, Naruto grinned, seeing the Bijuu out and about.
"Hey! Kurama!" face split in a wide smile, Naruto waved before running in their direction. "Were you lonely being separated from me? I missed you!" Naruto shouted, pumping both his fists into the air.
"Don't talk so loud! I wasn't lonely. You have half of me inside you...remember?" Kurama retorted irately, one of his fists balled. Son Goku burst into hysterics, amused by the interaction. The rest of the onlookers soon followed. Hagoromo chuckled, glad that Kurama had such a caring friend.
However, there was still an unresolved matter at hand. Hagoromo regained a mask of seriousness before speaking.
"This is the perfect moment. I will release the jutsu, free the five Kages and those under the Edo Tensei."
Naruto froze before quickly turning in his father's direction. Seeing his father looking back at him, Naruto looked up at his Nine-Tailed friend, as if asking for permission.
"Go," At Kurama's word, Naruto swiftly lept in Minato's direction, landing in front of him.
"Dad..." Naruto paused, unsure what to say.
"Oh, that's right," Minato smiled, coming to a realization. "I've been meaning to tell you..." Minato continued as the sun rose, showering the decimated battlefield with an almost angelic light. "Happy birthday! You've become a splendid young man, Naruto."
"Yeah...thank you." Naruto smiled somberly.
"It's time to say goodbye," Minato said, his kind smile never wavering. Naruto's eyes grew despondent, saddened that his father couldn't stay longer, as he nodded his head.
"I promise to tell Kushina everything," Minato declared, as his immortal body began to glow and crumble, signalling the release of his spirit. Naruto smiled at the name of his mother.
"Tell her not to worry. I'm eating properly! I'm not picky and eat lots of different stuff! Like, tonkotsu ramen, miso ramen, and shoyu ramen..." Naruto voiced, "Oh but, not just ramen though! I try to bathe everyday! I was really awful at school but I never got depressed and had more confidence than anyone else! What else, What else...I've made lots of friends! And they're all really good guys!" Naruto rushed, struggling to come up with things to say, before his father vanished from the living world.
"Naturally, I always obeyed Lord Third and Kakashi-sensei. I respect them both! Oh! And those Three Prohibitions of Shinobi? I learned a lot about that when I was with Pervy Sage! I just turned 17 today, so I don't know much about alcohol or girls..." Naruto began to rant, hoping to get everything he wanted to say out.
"Not everything Mom told me about went well," tears began to gather in Naruto's eyes, "but I'm doing the best I can! I've got dreams too! I know mom said to find someone like her, but...that's...um..." Naruto began to stumble through his words, unaware of the sorrowful yet proud look his father was sending him.
"I'm gonna become an even greater Hokage than you, Dad! I swear I will!" Naruto proclaimed, as his father's spirit finally broke free of the jutsu, "So when you see Mom over there, please tell her...that she doesn't have to worry about me at all!" Tears streamed down Naruto's face as his father's spirit prepared to leave.
"Tell her I'm doing my best!"
"Got it...I'll make sure to tell her everything." Minato swore, before he finally disappeared from the living world, leaving only a pile of ash behind.
Naruto's shoulders shook as 17 years worth of parentless memories were pushed back, finally, by that one interaction between father and son.
~X~X~X~X~Timeskip: 10 Years~X~X~X~X~
10 years. It had been 10 long years since the end of the war. In those ten years, Naruto had progressed both as a shinobi and a person. Naruto had advanced in strength and knowledge, he had become a father and a husband, and he had finally achieved his dream.
He had just recently become Hokage, although he did miss his inauguration thanks to his children. Though he did suppose that his child activating her byakugan at six should be something he is proud of.
He was...happy, something he wasn't used to being.
~X~X~X~X~Timeskip: 230 Years~X~X~X~X~
This was it, he was dying. AFter 257 years, he was finally dying. He'd been Hokage for nearly 20-years before he'd passed the mantle off to Konohamaru. He'd seen the rise and fall of 8 more Hokages.
He'd seen the death of his son and daughter. The deaths of his friends and wife. He'd seen the death of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had seen the reemergence of the Uzumaki and Namikaze clan. He had fought numerous more enemies than any other shinobi short of Madara and Hashirama.
Naruto had seen a great many things. He'd been ready to die for almost 150 years, but he just couldn't seem to die. But it was finally his time, he was saddened that he would have to say goodbye to Kurama, the one constant in his life but he was happy because his friend would finally be free just like the others.
Over 225 years ago, Naruto had succeeded in making a new charter for the Allied Shinobi Nations. One of the many prerequisites was that the use of Jinchuriki and capture of the Bijuu would be outlawed and would be charged as an offense against the world and the natural order. The Bijuu were seen as guardians and benign peacekeepers.
Now, 230 years later his long-time friend and companion would gain the freedom he had sought for more than 300 years. Yes, Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto, the Most Unpredictable Shinobi, the Kage Amongst Kages, the God of Shinobi, the Saviour of the World, Esteemed Elder of the Kage Council was finally at death's door.
Surrounded by his great-grandchildren and by the Kage's of all Five Nations, Naruto was ready to pass on.
"Do not frown, do not shed tears young ones. I am at peace, I can finally see my friends, my wife, and your parents and grandparents. I am at peace, because I trust the future of our world to you, I know that you will bring our world to greater heights." Naruto smiled, his old, weary face brightening.
"Just remember, the path to peace is never easy, it's not supposed to be. But so long as you communicate and understand one another, the world will continue to live in eternal peace. The dreams of shinobi, past and present will never be in vain." Naruto declared, his voice unnaturally strong for a man his age.
"The future...is never...certain, but we...can always make...our...own...fates. Remember...that!" Naruto proclaimed with his final breath.
Today was a melancholic day, for today was the day a legend had died. And it showed, when the weather that had been bright and sunny moments before, turned somber. The skies began to cry, as if the world itself recognized the passing of the greatest man in existence. The skies would continue to cry for a month after his death.
Naruto's funeral was the grandest to have ever passed. The entire world, for that one day, had stopped spinning. There was not a single person that had not attended his funeral. Even the Nine Guardian Bijuu were there. Naruto was not buried in a cemetery, he was given his own plot of land, nearly 10 acres, and at the very center, where his grave was, stood a 50 ft statue of Naruto. The rest of that plot of land was turned into a park, where men, women and children could walk, talk, play and relax. This park, would be known as Kami's Garden for in it laid what everyone was sure was the body of Kami's warrior and guardian.
Thus, the story of Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto came to an end. Or did it?
~O~O~O~O~Kami's Palace~O~O~O~O~
Naruto's eyes snapped open. Leaping to his feet, Naruto looked around confused for a moment.
"What happened, the last thing I remember was...I...died...?" Naruto's eyes widened in surprise as the memories of his life rushed back into his mind.
"I died?" Naruto asked, perplexed.
"Indeed you did, Naruto-kun." a voice boomed.
Naruto's eyes snapped all over the room, scanning for the voice in the room.
"Who are you?! Where am I?" Naruto asked, before noticing something strange.
Naruto looked down at himself, he noticed that he was at the same level of strength he had achieved when he was Hokage, when he had reached his peak. He was around 35 years old, it was that same year that his chakra levels had grown to match Kurama's both in size and potency.
"How is this possible? I was 257 when I died." Naruto questioned.
"Do you like it? I made so that when a soul dies and enters the pure realm, their soul reverts back to their prime condition." The voice remarked, a spark of pride in its voice.
"You made it so? Who are you? Why am I here?" Naruto inquired, his curiosity overcoming his caution and suspicion.
"Who am I," as the voice began to answer the question, a light exploded in front of him before condensing to form a body, "I believe your people Kami."
The light around the figure dimmed, revealing an androgynous figure wearing all white, the figure, Kami's, hair was a darker shade of chestnut brown contrasting greatly with their glowing golden irises.
"I apologize for my uncouthness, Kami-sama." Naruto exclaimed, immediately bowed before the divine being.
"Stand up, Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto, you of all people are not one who should bow before me. If anything, it is I who must bow to you." Kami said, lowering their head.
"Why would you bow to me? I'm a mortal!" Naruto cried out incredulously, causing Kami to chuckle.
"I bow before you, Naruto-kun, as thanks and as an apology." Kami said, honesty bleeding out of his words.
"What do you mean? What could you have done to me that you deem so reprehensible that you find it necessary to lower yourself by apologizing to me?" Naruto implored.
"Your destiny was to be the greatest saviour your world has ever known, however, because of my carelessness, you mother and father died the night you were born. They were supposed to have survived to raise you. Because of my foolishness, you suffered the worst of humanity as a child with no parental guidance." Kami explained, sorrow filling its tone.
"I don't regret my childhood, Kami-sama. Had it turned out differently, I may not have become the man I was. I have accepted it so there is no reason for you to apologize. I suppose even you are not infallible." Naruto explained in a kind, understanding voice.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to him, "If you don't mind me asking, Kami-sama, what exactly were you doing that distracted you that night?" Naruto inquired.
Kami's face suddenly reddened, causing Naruto's eyes to widen. "Truth be told, I was eating ramen while reading those little orange books your old sensei created."
~O~O~Some Hotspring in the Pure Lands~O~O~
An old white-haired man suddenly jumped up from his hiding place, dropping his notebook and pen, and pumped his fist in the air.
"Haha, some higher being has acknowledged my books! I have finally turned a deity down the path of Icha Icha!" Jiraya exclaimed.
Unfortunately, his exclamation was a little too loud, as his hiding spot was quickly found by the kunoichi and other women within the hotspring. Killing Intent washed over him, shocking him out of his victory dance.
Gulping Jiraya turned and saw two women he feared more than the Shinigami himself.
"K-kushina-chan, T-tsunade-hime, I-I can explain..." that was as far as Jiraya got before he was beaten into unconsciousness. Even more unfortunately for the Perverted Sage, because he was a spirit he could take an infinite amount of damage and he still wouldn't die. Thus not a single female held back when they attacked the old toad.
~O~O~O~O~Back at Kami's Palace~O~O~O~O~
Naruto's face went slack and his jaw fell open.
"Ha! I knew it! Ramen really is the food of gods!" a small part of his mind cried out.
"So you mean to say that you, Kami, creator of life, got distracted because you were reading Pervy Sage's porn while eating ramen?!" Naruto queried, his mind boggled, before he suddenly fell on the floor laughing.
"W-who...would...h-have thought...t-that...K-kami-sama...would be...a p-perv!" Naruto choked out between laughs, gasping for air.
"O-oi, I'm not a pervert you ass! The storyline is just really good!" Kami cried out in defense, causing another bout of howling, tearful laughter to latch on to Naruto.
Nearly 5 minutes later, Naruto's sides were hurting, but he had a wide grin on his face, occasionally chuckling.
"You never did explain why you wanted to thank me, Kami-sama?" Naruto suddenly asked.
"Because, Naruto-kun, you have done what should have been impossible for your world for another 3 millennia. You created lasting peace, an everlasting golden era within your world. Because of you, your world will become one of the most influential in the Universe. Because of you, I can finally take a break!" Kami exclaimed.
Naruto face-faulted at that last part. "Man, who would have thought Kami would be so lazy. They're almost as lazy as Shikamaru!"
~O~O~Somewhere else in the Pure Lands~O~O~
A dark, pineapple-haired male suddenly sneezed. Sitting up from his spot on his favorite cloud-watching hill, Shikamaru sighed.
"I don't know why, but I feel like Naruto is talking about me, somewhere. Troublesome blonde." Shikamaru muttered, flinging himself back onto his spot.
~O~O~O~O~Back at Kami's Palace~O~O~O~O~
"Right well, was that all you wanted because I still need to meet some people in the Pure Lands." Naruto said.
"Ah yes, you see Naruto, because of everything you've done for me, I've decided to do something for you. If you wish, I can give you a second chance at life. The only conditions are that your new life will be in a different universe, you will have no access to chakra at all, and only you can go." Kami said, face devoid of humor.
"If I say yes, can I retain my memories of my past?" Naruto queried.
"Yes, you may keep those memories so long as you never tell another person about them. The knowledge you possess can wreak havoc if it falls into the wrong hands." Kami replied.
Nodding, Naruto asked, "Can I have some time to think about it?"
"Yes, of course, when you have your answer, just call on me. Until then, enjoy your well deserved rest, Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto." Kami bellowed.
With Kami's words, a light engulfed Naruto before he found himself standing in front of the gates to an exact replica of his clan's compound. Opening the gate, Naruto tread up the path way, past the garden with a smile. Upon reaching the porch, Naruto prepared to open the sliding door.
Before he could do such a thing, the door slid open, to reveal his beautiful wife, Hinata Hyuga in all her lavender glory. Behind her stood his mother and father, followed by Jiraya, Tsunade, and all of his friends. Behind them was all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Hinata smiled at him, a beautiful, heartwarming smile before she said two words he had been missing for over two centuries.
"Welcome home."
Grinning, Naruto crossed the threshold, and hugged his wife fiercely.
"I missed you, my lavender-hime."
"I missed you too, my maelstrom knight."
Naruto was suddenly surrounded by his friends and family, hugging, laughing, talking. The party lasted all night long, and Naruto's smile never once wavered. Yes, for the first time in a long time, Naruto was happy. He was finally home.
~X~O~Timeskip: 2 Weeks - Pure Lands: Naruto's Home~O~X~
One week, one, glorious, peaceful week. That's how long it took for Naruto to have his fill of peace. He was bored. In a world that was perfect, where no one died or suffered, there was nothing fun for him to do. Not even sparring worked for him. He had spent so much time in the living world, that he had more experience and more power than anyone else he could find in the pure world.
It was for that reason that he had spent the next week considering Kami's proposal. Naruto's mind was split in half. On one hand, he wanted to live again. He wanted to experience life again. But on the other hand, Naruto felt like he was betraying his friends, his family, everyone he ever cared for. He had already lived over two and a half centuries longer, than anyone else.
Why should he get a second chance at life? He'd already lived longer than any human ever. Naruto wasn't sure what he felt about his dilemma. He wasn't necessarily feeling guilty, but it didn't feel right for him to get another chance at life.
"Naruto-kun? Are you alright?" Hinata asked, noticing a conflicted look on her husband's face.
"What? Hinata-hime...yes I'm alright, I'm just thinking." Naruto stumbled, momentarily shocked by her sudden appearance.
"Oh? What are you thinking about?" Hinata queried.
"Before I entered the pure lands, I um...I may have um...met Kami." Naruto described slowly, like he couldn't believe it himself.
Hinata's eyes widened, before she began to giggle. "Only you, Naruto-kun, would end up meeting Kami when you die,"
"Anyway, they made a proposition. They said that because of what I had done, I deserved to have a second chance at life in another universe." Naruto began.
"Wait, what exactly did you do?" Hinata asked.
"Well, according to Kami, I did the impossible and ensured that our world would have an eternity of peace, a golden era lasting all the way to the end of time." Naruto said, sheepishly.
Hinata gaped at him, shocked, that he did something that impossible.
"So you...brought peace to the world. Look at that, I guess you did find peace, just like you swore you would to Jiraiya-sama." Hinata exclaimed.
"Yeah, well, Kami said that if I agreed, I would be born again in another world, with no chakra, and only I can go. They said I could keep my memories of this life, but, I don't know, I just feel like if I do, I'm betraying you and everyone else." Naruto said.
"Do it." Naruto turned to the door and, to his shock, saw his mother, father, and friends all looking at him with smiles.
"What? Mom, Dad, what do you mean?" Naruto stumbled. "If I do this, I might no ever see you again!"
"Naruto, you've always focused on helping everyone else. You sacrificed so much in your life just to save your friends, and the world. You deserve a second chance at living a normal life. So do it, accept Kami's offer." Kushina said smiling.
"Your mother's right, sochi. You've done enough for this world, you've brought peace to it, real lasting peace. You deserve this chance. Besides, we all know that if you take this offer, you'll just try to bring peace to that world too. So go ahead, accept the offer and bring peace to that world too." Minato smiled.
Looking around, Naruto saw all of his friends smiling at him, nodding their heads encouragingly. Naruto turned his head to Hinata and saw her smiling at him.
"Dad, accept the offer. Do what you do best and save another world." Naruto's head shot up to see his son and daughter, Boruto and Himawari grinning at him.
"Naruto-kun, you've spent nearly 6 lifetimes being selfless, for the world. For once I think it will be fine if you are selfish. Take this chance. Grow up in this new life and find love again. When you die, we'll be here waiting for you." Hinata smiled kindly, caressing his cheek lovingly.
"You guys...thank you." Naruto smiled tearfully, grateful that his loved ones accepted and supported him.
Naruto stood up and walked out the door to the backyard, his family and friends following him. Turning around, Naruto smiled at them, and looked at their faces, memorizing their features.
"See you in another lifetime. I promise you that next time, I'll stay." Naruto declared.
Turning his head up to the sky, Naruto called out. "Okay, Kami, I've decided. I accept your proposal. Send me to this new life!"
"Prepare yourself, Naruto-kun. You will be crossing the dimensional barrier and will be sent to a different world at random. It will be painful." Kami's voice boomed in his head.
Then, in front of all his loved ones, Naruto disappeared in a flash of light.
The first thing Naruto felt was the feeling of being slammed through what felt like an impenetrable wall. Then came the pain, it was like he was twisting, turning, breaking apart, and folding in on himself. He could feel himself disintegrating and reintegrating simultaneously. This pain was other worldly, impossible. Then it just stopped.
~O~O~O~Central City - October 10, 1984~O~O~O~
Naruto's eyes were blasted with light. He could faintly hear a wailing sound. It was coming from him, he realized. He felt slimy. Shock jolted him, realizing what had happened.
"Damn you Kami! Why would you send me so far back that I actually experienced my own birth!" Naruto cursed in his mind, although his words came out as cries in real life.
"It's a boy, Mr. Allen. What do you want to name him?" Naruto heard a voice.
"Nathen, Nathen Jay Allen." A male voice called out.
~O~O~O~O~Kami's Palace~O~O~O~O~
Kami sat on their throne, laughing madly. They couldn't breathe. Their first ever prank had worked splendidly well. Who would have thought that the Prank King From Hell would fall to such a ridiculous prank.
"I knew it, Naruto was right. Pranking is fun." Kami chuckled.
"No offense Kami-sama, but don't you think that once Naruto dies in his second life, he's going to get you back for this?" one of Kami's angels asked.
Blood drained from Kami's face, realizing just how screwed they were. He wouldn't stand a chance against Naruto's ingenuity and creativity in pranking, something he had spent over 2 centuries cultivating and gaining experience in.
"Oh crap!" was all Kami could say.
~O~X~O~Central City - March 14, 1989~O~X~O~
Nathen Jay Allen, son of Henry and Nora Allen, was now five. In the past five years he had grown to look like his mother, with his vibrant red hair and his deep blue eyes.
Nathen was worried. Although he was only five years old, he was very smart for his age. By the age of 1 he was already walking and talking. He was able to understand concepts that no child his age should be able to. However, some things he would not be able to until he was older. One such concept is the idea of childbirth, or at least that's what everyone else thought.
Nathen was outside his mother's hospital room. Nora Allen was in the process of giving birth to his little brother, who they planned to call Bartholemew Henry Allen, Barry for short. Every time Nathen heard his mother scream, he had to resist the urge to rush into the room. He knew his father would just take him back outside and make him sit down again.
"I hope Mom's okay, she sound like she's in a lot of pain"
Nathen's mind was a whirlwind, constantly creating scenarios where something goes wrong. Where his mother dies, or his new little brother, or, god forbid, both. Tears were threatening to fall at the thought, when suddenly he couldn't hear his mother's screams. No, he heard was the little wails of a new born baby.
Nathen hopped down from his seat and used his stout little legs to run into the room. Upon entering, he saw some of the doctors huddling around something. Ignoring this for the moment, Nathen ran as fast as his little legs could carry him and climbed onto his mother's bed. Seeing her weary, sweaty face, Nathen's eyes shone with concern.
"Mommy? Are you okay?" Nathen asked, meekly.
"Of course, my little storm. Mommy's just a little tired." Nora sighed, smiling weakly.
Nathen nodded in understanding, smiling at her a little. Nathen jumped slightly when his father placed a hand on him.
"Come on, son, let's take a look at the new addition to the family." Henry smiled, picking him up.
Latching his arms around his father's neck, Nathen smiled, nodding a little in agreement. Henry carried his now eldest son to the small bed his newest son slept in. Looking down at his new little brother Nathen turned to his father.
"Can I hold him, Dad?" Nathen asked curiously.
"Yeah of course, just be careful not to drop him." Henry said, setting him down and grabbing Barry from his bed and handing him to his brother.
Nodding in agreement, Nathen carefully held his little brother, looking down at him, Nathen felt something inside him click. It was like this overwhelming need to protect his brother from anything.
"Is this how Itachi felt when Sasuke was born." Nathen thought, his respect for Itachi rising a few more notches.
"I swear to you Barry, I'll protect you from anything. Even if you hate me, I'll always be here for you."
It was this same promise that would push Nathen to become one of the greatest heroes in the world.
~X~O~Timeskip: 11 Years - Allen Household~O~X~
Nathen had kept his promise. Whenever Barry would need help, he was there, protecting him. Whether it was from bullies, teachers, or even himself. Nathen was always there. He'd help him with his homework. Teach him how to have fun. He'd do everything he could to keep his brother safe and happy.
It was for this reason that Joe West trusted Nathen to protect his daughter when he could not. Joe knew that because Iris was Barry's friend and crush, Nathen would do anything to keep her safe. He had proven it, numerous times, when he had helped teach her how to defend herself.
Nathen had trained his younger brother to defend himself, he taught him how to exercise and manage his nutrition, all when Barry was 5. He did this so Barry would learn quicker and stay alive longer. Nathen taught his brother and supported him academically so that he would never become a fool.
Nathen was a truly kind brother. But he was also a genius. When he wasn't teaching his brother and Iris, he was constantly studying. He passed every class with an A. He also made sure to stay healthy and exercise. Nathen was a certified genius, scoring an IQ over 300 at 14. He studied martial arts becoming a 1st degree black belt in Karate, Taekwondo, Jujutsu, Judo, Aikido, Tai Chi, and Capoeira.
Nathen was set to graduate high school this year, a full two years ahead of people his age. Nathen knew he was smart, with his photographic memory and study habits, he was able to pick up on things quickly. Coupled with his memories of his past life, Nathen was set to succeed.
Despite this, Nathen was unprepared to handle what would happen on this night. Nathen awoke to a crash, leaping out of bed he went to check on his brother. On his way to his brother's room, Nathen noticed the strange lights coming from the living room down stairs. Carefully creeping down the steps he could hear his mother screaming.
"No! Barry stay away!" Nora cried out, in the middle of what looked to be a lightning storm.
Nathen leapt into action and grabbed hold of his brother to make sure he stayed away from the lightning storm. Trying to find a way to get his mother free, he noticed what looked like two men fighting within the storm. One had red eyes and was wearing a yellow suit, the other had one red suit with a white and gold, lightning themed emblem on his chest.
Nathen was distracted by the two speedsters' fight to notice his father screams to take his brother and run. All of a sudden, Nathen caught sight of the man in yellow leaping at his brother, as if trying to kill him before he was knocked aside by the man in red. The man in red suddenly looked at him and nodded, before vanishing with his brother.
Nathen didn't know why but he knew his brother was safe so he focused on the man in yellow, who roared in rage. Nathen watched as his father was sent flying across the room, unconscious before the red-eyed speedster stalked towards his mother.
Using his knowledge in martial arts, Nathen attacked the speedster. And despite the difference in speed, his ability to randomly switch his fighting style allowed him to land a kick to the speedsters sternum and follow up by breaking his outstretched left arm at the elbow. The man in yellow roared in primal anger before he broke Nathen's leg and arm.
Nathen fell to the floor and was forced to watch as the man stuck a knife through his mother's heart. As the man left the house, Nathen dragged himself to his mother's body and began to cry.
"Mom!" Nathen cried out.
"N-nathen?" Nora asked, struggling to breathe.
"Yeah Mom, it's me." Nathen responded, choking back tears.
"Oh, my little stormy knight. I'm so glad you're safe. Where's Barry, is he okay?" Nora asked frantically.
"Yeah Mom, Barry's safe, we're all safe." Nathen smiled tearily.
"T-that's good...promise m-me...you'll t-take c-care of...y-your brother. P-promise me." Nora begged as life began to drain from her eyes.
Nodding his head shakily Nathen promised, "I swear I will, I won't let anything happen to him. He's my precious little brother, after all."
Nora smiled at that, happy that, in her final moments, she could be certain that her children would be just fine. Nathen sat there for the next half hour crying over his mother's dead body. Mourning for his loss, that was how the police had found him. They quickly took him to the ambulance and then charged back in, later finding his father's prints on the murder weapon.
Nathen was stuck watching as his father was dragged into the police car screaming his innocence. Nathen noticed his little brother running into the house, still in his pajamas. Sighing in relief, Nathen stood up off the edge of the ambulance and limped back into the house, ignoring both the screaming pain and the paramedics calling out to him. Nathen found his brother kneeling beside his mother's body, with Joe beside him.
"Barry! Thank god you're okay! What happened, where'd you go?" Nathen called out, kneeling down and hugging his younger brother tightly.
"I don't know. One second I was in the how and the next I was in the middle of the street." Barry said.
Barry turned to Joe, "You have to let our Dad go, he didn't do this. It was the man in yellow, he killed our mom." Barry cried.
"Shh, Barry, let's get you and your brother to the hospital first. Then we can talk about this." Joe said.
Joe looked up at Nathen and gave him a questioning look. 'Later' Nathen mouthed. Joe nodded before leading Nathen and Barry to the paramedics. On their way to the hospital, Nathen allowed Barry to fall asleep on him. Placing an arm around his brother, Nathen stared up at the ceiling of the ambulance.
"I don't know what happened tonight. I don't know what'll happen from this point on, but I'll protect him Mom. I'll protect Barry and bring the man who killed you to justice. I swear it." Nathen thought.
