Davis helped Yorkie to her feet, and showed her to a booth.
"Do you want something to drink?" He asked her
"Yeah, coke, I guess" she replied, halfheartedly.
A few moments later, he returned with a fruity cocktail drink in one hand, and a coke in the other.
"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to" Davis finally said, trying to at least say something to offset the awkwardness and tension of the situation.
"Actually, I think I'd like to get it off my chest, if that's okay" Yorkie said, composed, but still very low energy.
Davis nodded in agreement, and then Yorkie gave a brief accouunt of her life story, and relationship with Kelly. Her one and only romantic relationship with a woman, that had started out as kind of a one night stand, that quickly escalated into marriage, and then ended just as quickly, when Yorkie said the wrong thing on their wedding night.
When she was done, Davis took a moment to take it in. It was definitely something well outside his experience. But he had some idea of where Yorkie was coming from, and how she was probably feeling at that moment. He searched his memories for something, some nugget, some piece of advice he could offer, to make her feel better.
"Well?" she finally asked, feeling a little impatient.
"Well, um, sometimes grief leads to bad life choices" he finally said, thinking it was quite profound.
"Huh?" Yorkie was confused by this, and didn't see the relevance.
"Well, take my dad, for instance..." he said, beginning a story of his own.
My mom passed right at the end of my sophomore year of college. So, I was already spending the summer at my parents place. But now I had to deal with that, and I didn't handle it particularly well. But my dad was worse. My dad barely ate, showered, or even got out of bed. Thankfully, my aunt Emma (whose not actually my aunt, but a friend of my parents from way back, before I was even born) stepped up and handled all the funeral arrangements. She also made sure my dad ate, slept and got out of bed enough, to keep him from joining my mom prematurely. But then the summer ended, and I had to go back to college. Aunt Emma assured me everything would be alright, but by the time I returned for Christmas, things weren't alright. Things were in fact, quite awkward. I don't entirely know what happened, but what I managed to piece together was that the two kissed, or almost kissed (depending on which version you want to believe) and he got angry, accused her of trying to seduce him, and break his wedding vows. I reminded him that those vows were null and void when mom died, for which I got the hardest slap of my life, and learned that according to him, "Till death do us part, meant both of us".
And then, it got worse. He went from being sad all the time, to angry all the time. He started drinking, a lot. He pushed me and Aunt Emma away, and I ended up spending any time I wasn't at college with her, and avoiding him. He eventually got arrested for DUI. This was exactly the wake up call he needed to turn his life around. Emma and I helped him with his defense, and we reconciled just in time for him to come to my college graduation ceremony. But by that point, it was too late for anything to happen between him and Emma. He'd pretty much thrown that away.
Yorkie was on the verge of tears. "I'm so sorry, Davis"
"Eh, don't worry about it. It was a while ago, and I'm over it"
Yorkie then took a deep breath, and thought about what to say next.
"Maybe I should just delete myself. You know, die permanently. Just like I wanted for all those years"
Davis was a little nervous at this. This was essentially a conversation about someone ending their own life. But he managed to find the right words.
"You could do that. But have a look around this room..." which Yorkie did
"How many people do you think are in here right now?"
"I don't know, a hundred maybe?"
"And how many in the town altogether?"
"No idea, but its probably a lot more"
"Exactly, and I'm guessing about half of them are women. And I don't know how many are, you know, like you, but I'm sure some of them would have to be" Yorkie thought he sounded so confident as he was saying this, but in reality, he was quite nervous, and struggling to verbalize his thoughts.
"What's your point?" she finally asked
"My point is, there's probably someone out there for you (and probably for me as well)" he said the last part under his breath
"You know what? You're right. I need to get back on the horse, and find someone. You too, heck, we can probably help find each other someone" Yorkie said, gently tapping his shoulder
Yorkie and Davis then realized there was someone standing over them, breathing heavily. It sounded like they were exhausted from running, or something (which was odd, because why would anyone ever be exhausted in here?). They looked up to see someone unknown to Davis, but Yorkie instantly recognized the face of Wes.
