Welcome, everybody, to my first attempt writing for my new favorite Disney property! Instead of a full story, we have a drabble of sorts. You see, I'm currently in the middle of several projects right now but this idea refused to leave my head. So, instead of committing to a full story, I wanted to test the waters first. So, this will be a one-and-done for now but if there is enough good feedback then you can all expect more!
The Hexside Field Day was abuzz once again, and every booth was swarming with students on the cusp of graduating in a few months. There was one exception, though. At the end of the grudgby field turned fair was an entire stage made for the most prestigious magical clan of all, the Emperor's Coven.
The scout glanced down at the two witches who had declared their intention to join. Both with wild red hair, though of different shades, and both dressed in the yellow sleeves and leggings of the school's potion track. He then looked at the entirely blank sign-up parchment in his hands. If either of the witchlings could see his face, they might have seen the ugly smirk come up.
"One spot is available. You duel tomorrow. The winner will join our ranks."
Both witches looked at each other. The one with darker red, very poofy hair simply walked away. But the other one, with much more fiery hair styled like a manticore's mane, quirked an eyebrow. Now, in another time, this witch simply resigned herself to this arrangement and decided to do the honorable thing tomorrow.
But this time, Edalyn Clawthorne spun her right hand in a circle and magically yanked the sign-up sheet out of the scout's hand. He yelled in shock only for the witch to run over to her sister.
"Lily, look! There's nobody else on this sheet!"
Her older sister Lilith read over the parchment multiple times before an enraged glare tore through her thick, round glasses. "What the?! What is the meaning of this?!"
The scout now darted his masked gaze between the two before folding his hands behind his back. "It's tradition. We always accept only the best student witch of the class to join."
Lilith only grew more upset. "There is no such rule! I have memorized every edition of the Emperor's Coven handbook! It clearly states that any amount of prospective witchlings may audition of the Coven Trials! You're just making up excuses now!"
Eda just crossed her arms, the same smirk that infuriated many a Hexside professor now leveled at him. "Nice try, Birdface. My sis here is the biggest Emperor's Coven nerdthere is. If she says there's no rule, then it's a fact."
The commotion started to draw other students away from the booths, leading Lilith to angrily shove the blank sign-up sheet in her classmates' faces to show his deceit.
"What's going on here?" someone else asked, breaking up the ring of gawkers.
"Oh, Principal Bump!" Lilith cheered, "This coven scout was trying to trick Edalyn and I into a witch's duel over the last spot in the Emperor's Coven but look!"
The man took the blank parchment and a scowl appeared under the red impish palismen acting as his glasses. "Care to explain this, young man? Why would you try to take two of my most promising students duel for no particular reason?"
"Uh… Um…"
"I see. Your own personal amusement, hm? Well now, I'm sure Kikimora would be more than interested in hearing about your decision while representing the Emperor's Coven, wouldn't she?"
"N-NOOOOOOO! Please, sir, anything but that! I can't get reported again!"
"Then maybe you shouldn't be such a jerk!" Eda yelled, earning a resounding cry from many of the other students until Bump raised his hand.
"I can't believe I'm about to say this, but Edalyn is right. You had no right to instigate a witch's duel between her and Lilith just for your own kicks! I will reporting you to Kikimora herself, and perhaps then you'll learn not to turn two of my most promising students against each other!"
Lilith blushed while Eda blinked. She didn't think he of all people would stand up for her either. Nevertheless, Bump dragged the slimy scout into Hexside to report him leaving the rest of the fair to go as expected. The Clawthornes would return home that day with a proper sign-up sheet that they had to hand in at their graduation ceremony.
That night, Gwen and Dell heard all about the affair from Lilith who was still fuming. How could someone from the most prestigious coven of all act so immature and petty? But then she noticed Eda just staring at her ghost beef.
"Edalyn?"
"H-Huh?" She snapped up to notice her parents and Lily staring at her, "What?"
"Witchlet, are you alright? You've hardly said a word since you both got home."
"I… I've been thinking a lot."
"About Raine?"
"S-Shut up, Lily!" Eda blushed as bright as her bard "friend's" uniform, hating the teasing smirk on her big sister's face, "No, about covens in general. Mom, Dad, when did you have to join one?"
"When I was twenty-five," Dell said simply, "Gwen took a little extra time but she settled on the Beastkeeping Coven a little afterwards."
"Exactly! Why keep making us join younger and younger, and don't give me some spiel at Belos and the Titan, Lily!"
The older sister's mouth shut before she could start up. Even she had to admit her faith was shaken. To think the Emperor could allow such a selfish, cruel person to not just be a member of his coven, but publicly represent it to the next generation of witches…
Eda soon got up from the table and went up to her bedroom. Lily at least asked to be excused before following her up, and soon had to duck as her sister was chucking out everything with the Emperor's Coven logo on it.
"What are you doing?!"
"If Belos lets an ass like that into his coven, then I never want to join! They almost made me fight my sister! Screw them!"
Lilith just gaped. It had been their dream since they were kids to join the ranks of the Emperor's Coven together, the Clawthorne Sisters would become the most renowned witches in all the Boiling Isles.
"Eda…"
"What? If you want to still be part of those stooges, then I won't stop you."
"But… What will you do now?"
"Eh, beats me. I guess I could just go into potions or maybe carve palismen like Dad but there's so many other forms of magic I wanna try!"
"You can't! You'd be-!"
"Yeah, yeah, labeled as a wild witch, hunted down by the Emperor's Coven, blah-blah-blah. But Mom and Dad were alive before Belos took over, the Boiling Isles wasn't made for him! And I'm really sick of hearing how 'amazing' and 'illustrious' and 'we need to worship the ground he walks on' he is! I'll become an even better witch than him!"
Lilith hadn't seen her sister this fired up in ages. Maybe the day that bully stole her lunch money and Eda's resulting abomination army was a close second, but she could feel the conviction in the fiery witch. She had every intention of surpassing the Emperor himself, consequences be damned…
"Eda… Say we did go through with the duel. Would you have-?"
"I wouldn't."
Lilith's glasses almost fell off from the shock. "Huh?! What do you mean?!"
"I'd never fight you, Lilith. You're my sister, you've been there for me every day. I'd sooner be a wild witch than fight you."
"E-Eda… I…" And that was the last straw. Lilith's guilt that she had been harboring since the duel was called off burst, making her drop to her knees and cry her eyes out. Eda immediately rushed to her side, asking her what was wrong.
Lilith confessed that, if that duel had been mandatory, she's not sure she could have stepped away. In those few moments where she was convinced she would have to fight Eda, she even started formulating a plan… To go to the Night Market and find something that would boost her odds.
Lilith clenched her eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable explosion of anger or yells of fury. She waited for her parents to rush up the stairs and punish her for even contemplating doing such a thing to her sister. But instead, she felt a pair of arms embrace her and Eda's hair tickle her neck.
"Hey, it's okay. I get it, I'm awesome. But there's no need to worry about something that didn't happen, right?"
"R-Really? You're not upset?"
"Nah, you're a nerd, and that means you can get a little lost in that big brain of yours. But that also means you're smarter than I'll ever be!"
Lilith just doubled the strength of her hug, thanking the Titan that she had a sister like Edalyn. The two soon started bragging that they would totally win if they had a duel of their own, but now it was all in good faith.
From downstairs, Gwendolyn and Dell were beaming with pride at their girls. They hadn't let this awful misunderstanding rip them apart, and instead talked through their issues. Although, they were shocked to hear that Eda was now planning on not joining any coven. Their youngest had always been a free spirit, but did that really mean she'd seek to surpass Belos?
That night, Lilith also swore she would never serve the Emperor. She tossed away all of her posters and guidebooks, then joining Eda in setting them ablaze in the forest nearby. True, the two would graduate from Hexside in a few months with their potion degrees. They could start their own shop for elixirs, or they could search the Isles for rare ingredients. But soon, Eda's new dream of becoming the absolute greatest witch of all came about.
She began dreaming about all the ways she could blend magics from the various tracks she picked up in the Secret Room of Shortcuts. Mixing healing and bard magics to make songs that would soothe the pains of anyone who heard it. Making potions that could change the properties of magical plants. Creating abominations imbued with oracle magic that could see their target's next move. All of these got Lilith's mind racing, and soon they spent hours under the stars imagining the power they could wield, the freedom they could have if they ditched the whole coven system.
The two only headed to bed once it was almost midnight. Tomorrow would just be another day at Hexside, but that night their minds would still be full of flights of fancy about becoming the ultimate rebels. And above all, they promised that no one would ever pull them apart like that jackass scout almost did.
Little did they, or the rest of the Boiling Isles, know just how far the course of history was going to change…
Well, anyone else curious? Eda and Lilith, united against the Coven System and Emperor Belos for good? Let me know!
Thank you all so much for reading! Feel free to leave questions or comments in a review.
