Marcel sat by Rebekah's side waiting for her to wake up. It had been hours. He'd moved her from the coffin to the couch and had the coffins moved down to the basement for the time being. He'd also had Sadie and her friends leave the room. He decided it would be best if he spoke to Rebekah by himself first. Rebekah was almost certainly going to be skeptical at first, and he didn't want to put Sadie through that. Rebekah could be very rough with people she thought were out to hurt her or her family.
Suddenly, Rebekah bolted up.
Marcel grabbed a blood bag from the coffee table and handed it out to Rebekah.
Rebekah immediately took ahold of the blood and began sucking it dry. She was immediately handed another. She didn't even care who was giving it to her. She was starving.
Once Rebekah had drank about three or four bags of blood, she looked up at the person who gave it to her in shock. He was the last person she expected to see because she thought he was dead. "Marcel?!"
"I'm here. It's okay," Marcel said before sitting down and pulling her into his arms.
"I thought you were dead," Rebekah said as she hugged him. That had been one of the worst experiences of her life, knowing that Marcel had died because of their stupid actions. The only thing worse than that had been losing her niece.
After Rebekah managed to calm down, she'd realized that Marcel had let her go years thinking he was dead. She immediately pushed him away and smacked him. "You let me think you were dead!"
Marcel grabbed the side of his face. "Yeah, I was expecting that at some point. To be fair, you guys left me. You didn't even check to see if I was still alive."
"We didn't really have a choice! My father was hunting us! If we'd even tried, we would've been killed! You could've searched for us!" Rebekah snapped.
"Yeah, because you guys would've been easy to find," Marcel said sarcastically. He'd been trying to find Klaus for two months now and he'd had no luck at all. Finding the coffins was the closest he'd come.
"Did you even try?" she asked.
"No," Marcel admitted. "I guess I was angry at you for leaving. I figured if you wanted to know what happened to me, you'd come back. You never did."
"I spent most of that time in a box! I've been daggered since 1922. By the way, where the bloody hell is Nik," Rebekah asked. She owed her brother a little suffering for daggering her. She doubted it would do any good, but she was going to make him feel her displeasure.
"He's not here," Marcel said.
"Then how'd I end up back here?" Rebekah asked.
"A couple of my guys brought you and your other siblings here," he answered.
"Well, I hope your bloody affairs are in order," Rebekah said. Her brother was going to be livid. He wouldn't kill Marcel, but he would definitely show his displeasure.
"Klaus will understand," Marcel said. He hoped Klaus would understand at some point anyway. Marcel knew he'd be pissed at first, but when he found out that it was done for Sadie, hopefully he'd get over it.
"Oh, yes, that seems likely. How'd you find me anyway?"
"I tasked one of my guys with looking for a Mikaelson. I wanted Klaus, but this was the closest I could find," Marcel said.
"Lovely. I was your second choice. Why were you looking for my brother after all this time? And speaking of time, how long has it been?" Rebekah asked.
"You said you were daggered in 1922, so just under ninety years," he said.
"Bastard!" Rebekah snarled as she thought of her brother.
"Rebekah, you asked me why I was looking for Klaus. It's because something has happened. We made a horrible mistake back then," Marcel said.
"Yes, I'd say so. Bringing my father to town is the worst thing we've ever done, but what does it have to do with anything now?" Rebekah asked.
"No, that's not what I mean, although that was definitely a horrible mistake. I'm talking about all of us. You, me, Klaus, and Elijah. We all screwed up," Marcel said.
"What are you talking about?" Rebekah asked confused.
"Sadie," Marcel said.
Rebekah's body went stiff and she narrowed her eyes at Marcel. "Why are you bringing that up? Like I need reminding of how we all failed that night! I will live with that for the rest of eternity!"
"I'm not just talking about that night. I'm talking about the nights afterwards. I'm talking about her fate, or at least what we thought her fate was. We were so sure we knew what happened. We didn't bother making sure we were right. Afte the explosion, we just assumed she was dead," he said.
"What are you talking about? We didn't assume anything! She was in that house! Her necklace was among the wreckage," Rebekah said with pain laced in her voice. She would remember that for the rest of her eternal life. She'd worn that necklace around her every day since then. That was until she lost it in Chicago.
"But we didn't find a body. Rebekah, I don't think she was ever in that house," Marcel said. He couldn't say for sure because Sadie didn't remember, but he did know that the witches they'd thought had killed his sister had little to nothing to do with it.
Rebekah stood up and narrowed her eyes down at Marcel. "What are you saying to me, Marcel."
Marcel stood up as well. "Two months ago, I met a young witch. I didn't think anything of it at first. I thought she was just a witch passing through, but then she started telling me things about herself, like that she'd been abducted as a child and subjected to countless compulsions until she shifted into a werewolf. She told me she remembered Klaus being her father."
"She's lying! Where is this little bitch! I will make her suffer for daring to do such a thing!" Rebekah yelled.
Marcel was insanely glad that he'd had Sadie leave the room. She didn't need to hear these things. It also made him worry about what would happen when he finally found Klaus because he probably wasn't going to believe it either. "She's not lying, Rebekah. I thought she might be at first too, but she knew things that only one of us could have told her if she were lying, and none of us would."
"Like what?" Rebekah asked.
"Like the day you gave her your mother's necklace. She remembers details that couldn't be made up. She remembers all of her nicknames for us. She remembers the night of the kidnapping. She remembers begging Klaus and Elijah not to leave because she knew something bad was going to happen," Marcel explained.
Rebekah felt her hands shake. If what Marcel was saying was true, she didn't see how the girl could be lying. He was right. Those were things that she would have to learn from one of them, and none of them ever even spoke of Sadie much. It was too painful. "She said all of that to you?"
"Yes. She's not lying, Rebekah. Nobody could make up the hell she's been through. She wakes up screaming for Klaus almost every night," he said.
Rebekah let out a strangled cry. "Take me to her."
"She's upstairs. I'll go get her, but there's one more thing you need to know first. It turns out that Sadie's mother was from the Petrova bloodline. She's a doppelganger."
Rebekah would probably laugh at the irony of that under any other circumstances, but there was nothing remotely funny about this situation. "Bring me my niece, Marcel."
Marcel nodded before leaving the room.
Rebekah tried to compose herself while Marcel was gone. If this girl really was her niece, and Rebekah couldn't see how she could be anyone else with the memories she had, then Rebekha needed to be calm for her.
"It's going to be okay," Marcel was saying as he walked back into the room with his sister right behind him. Her friends were with her too. Sadie was very nervous.
Elena stared at the woman who frequented her memories. She looked exactly the same as she did in those memories. Of course, she did. She was a vampire. She wouldn't have aged or anything. "Hi."
Rebekah slowly walked over and tentatively placed a hand on the girl's cheek. She almost expected her to disappear when she touched her, but she didn't. "Sadie?"
Elena nodded. "Hi, Auntie 'Bekah."
Any kind of composer Rebekah had gained in the last few minutes had evaporated at those three words. She pulled her niece into her arms and started to sob.
Caroline and Bonnie started to cry as they watched before Caroline motioned for Bonnie to leave the room with her. They'd come to make sure Elena would be safe. Now that they knew she would be, they needed to let her have this time with her family.
"It's okay. I'm okay," Elena assured her aunt. Saying was okay was definitely pushing it. She was far from okay and probably never would be, but she wanted to make her aunt feel better.
"I'm so sorry," Rebekah cried.
"It's okay. It wasn't your fault," Elena said. She didn't blame her family for what happened, not any of them. She blamed Stefan and Katherine.
Rebekah managed to pull herself together after a few more minutes and pulled away. She brought her hands to either side of her niece's face. "You're grown up. You were just a little girl when I saw you last."
Elena managed to smile in response.
"That was almost a century ago, but you're still here and young. You stopped aging at some point," Rebekha said.
Elena nodded. "It seems that way. I don't remember most of the time I was gone."
"Come on," Rebekah said before taking her hand and leading her to the couch, where they both sat down. "I've missed you so much. We should've searched harder. We should've been sure."
"It's not anybody's fault, except for the people who did it. Believe me, I know how good Katherine is at fooling people," Elena said.
"Katherine? Are you talking about Katerina Petrova? She did this?" Rebekah asked with anger laced in her voice.
Elena nodded. "She had help, but she orchestrated the whole thing."
"For what purpose? I know she'd want to hurt Nik, but what was her endgame?" Rebekah asked.
"I'm not sure what it was at first. I think it must have changed, since she waited so long, but in the end, it was to have him kill me as the Petrova doppelganger," Elena told him.
Rebekah was furious. She was going to torture that little bitch until she begged for mercy. She'd not only kidnapped her and ravaged her mind, but she'd also tried to have her murdered by her own father. "She will suffer for all she's done to you! We will not rest until she's found and begging for death!"
Elena nodded. "She almost got what she wanted, but I transformed into a werewolf right before the sacrifice. Her accomplice compelled me to dagger Elijah. I can only imagine Katherine was pissed when she found out he betrayed her. It must be hard to find reliable psychopaths these days."
"You daggered Elijah? Not even Nik does that," Rebekah commented. He mostly didn't do it because he knew it wouldn't be worth it. Elijah was vindictive. He would get payback, and Nik knew that.
"I…I feel really bad about that," Elena said.
"Sadie, it wasn't your fault. You were compelled," Marcel said.
"Marcel's right. Elijah wouldn't blame you. In fact, if he were here, he'd probably tell you he was grateful for it. It ended the compulsions and kept Nik from doing something he would've hated himself for," Rebekah said. She wasn't sure if completing the ritual would've killed her niece, as she knew that the girl was at least somewhat immortal, but her brother would never have forgiven himself for it either way. "Wait, Nik isn't here. He doesn't know then?"
"Not yet. It took me a while to piece things together. He and Elijah were gone when that happened," Elena said.
"We have to find him," Rebekah said.
"I'm already working on it," Marcel assured her.
Elena rubbed her eyes. She was pretty tired. It was very late, and it had been a long day.
"Sadie, you should get some rest. Its been a long day. I can see you're tired," Marcel said.
"Your brother's right, dear. Go get some sleep. We can talk more in the morning," Rebekah said. She had a million questions, and she didn't really want to let her niece out of her sight, but she could tell the girl was exhausted. She needed to sleep.
"Okay. Goodnight," Elena said before getting up and heading out of the room.
