Finished that chapter of A World of Quirks early, but damn was it long. I didn't want to split stuff in it…if you read it, you've seen it. With this chapter, Shit, I did not expect things to turn out like this. I had much more planned, but I got into a groove and couldn't stop. But I think it does a good job of exploring the characters.
Chapter 47: Brick by Brick
As Midoriya and Todoroki were led to a changing room to get dressed, others had made it to their internships and had been given a number of jobs. One such person was Iida, who had decided to head to Hosu City to intern under the Normal Hero: Manuel. Manuel is a respectable pro to be sure, but as his name implied, he was far from someone who stood out or had any achievements to his name that any other hero didn't have.
The man was busy leading his intern through the streets of Hosu, which, so early in the morning, was incredibly peaceful and pleasant. Traffic was light, and while people walked the streets, they were far from the human streams one would see in larger metropolitan areas.
"Normally, pros wait for calls from clients like the fire brigade or police, but it doesn't hurt to be a little more proactive and do patrols. It helps to calm people when they see you, even when things aren't on fire." Manuel explained as the two casually strolled down the street, the fair weather making it all the easier. The pro sighed, as that wasn't the only thing on his mind.
"In Hosu, that last part's been more important with the series of attacks, which is bound to happen anytime there is an unexpected rise in crime, especially violent crime." He advised his young ward, as sure things were calm now, but they'd get worse when night fell. Not just because Stain could strike but because his presence encouraged others to act out.
"So street patrols exist to ease the hearts of the people?" Iida asked as Manuel waved at some students across the street.
"And to discourage crime, as if I were a mugger, I wouldn't try anything when a pro could be nearby. Though when it comes to the desperate or cocky variety of villains, our proximity doesn't stop them, so it's important that at the first sign of trouble, you're ready to jump and handle things as fast as possible." Manuel replied before turning to Iida with a chuckle on his lips.
"Just don't get overexcited or emotional, though. Being a hero means keeping a cool head and thinking through even on the fly." He warned him but couldn't stop himself from laughing like he heard a good joke. "But I can guess you already knew that, being the son of the Iida family. I still can't believe you accepted my offer; you must have got plenty from pros with greater skills and higher rankings."
"It seemed like the best option at the time..." Iida replied, recalling why he chose Hosu, for it was here his brother was attacked by Stain and crippled. Here, Stain tried to end Ingenium. Tenya refused to let that go unpunished, to allow Stain to just walk free, so he chose the city where Stain was, not caring much for Manuel as a hero. To him, he was just a means to be in the city without triggering suspicion…
But Stain failed. His brother might have been badly hurt in that attack and all but forced into an early retirement, but Midoriya had stepped in, and thanks to him, his brother had made a full recovery. The hospital had agreed to keep it secret for the moment. Still, his family planned to announce his brother's expectant return to hero work sometime during the week.
Midoriya…ensured that Stain's efforts were for naught. Yet, he still felt that anger, that desire to exact his revenge on Stain. However, it wasn't nearly as palpable as it had been in the days after he heard the news about his brother's condition. His rage had been fuelled by the sight of his brother, the man he respected and loved, weak and covered in bandages as he lay in a hospital bed, his legs unresponsive.
But that image had been supplanted by his brother's booming, joyous laugh as he walked around his hospital room. First with help from the nurses, then with a cane, and now with nothing but his own 2 feet, joking with the nurses that they should join him for a foot race through the halls like he was 12, those same nurses laughing and blushing at his brother's charm.
"And now?" Manuel's question broke through his deliberations. Yes, that was the question he had been asking himself as well. By the time he realized his desire to fight Stain wasn't so overwhelming, it was too late, and to his shame, he couldn't bring himself to request a change, as that could see him ousting himself to the teachers.
"I…I need to think about that…" Iida replied as he didn't feel that rage, just…shame. Shame because he was controlled by revenge, shame at using Manuel as just a means to an end to achieve that.
But more than that, he felt shame as he recalled the day in the hospital when Midoriya healed what Stain broke and the words that Midoriya shared with his father when the two thought they were alone.
"I just did what heroes are supposed to! Heroes help people…so I helped. Pretty simply, if you think about it."
"That might end up just being more hero work; as a kid, I wanted to be the kind of hero All Might is, the kind that could save someone with a smile. Now, I want to be the kind of hero Ryukyu is, someone who can bring hope…even to someone who feels like there is none. So if you think I might ask for your help in a fight, that isn't likely."
Those were the words he couldn't stop thinking about. Spoken without pause or deceit. Midoriya wasn't one for grandstanding or speeches; anyone who watched his attempt to give the athletes' pledge at the Sports festival could tell you that much. In a way, it only made Tenya feel worse as it meant Midoriya was speaking from the heart.
He moved to save people, to save his brother, just because heroes helped people and because he wanted to be the sort of person who brought smiles and hope. It was the sort of hero his brother had been that he could continue to be, yet…where did Tenya stand? Why did he choose Hosu? He knew why, and it made him sick to his stomach. His reasons were rooted in hatred and murderous intent, and no flowery words could change that.
So what was he doing here? Could he even wear this uniform when he had so blatantly gone against the morals and ideals of heroes?
He didn't know, but maybe he could figure that out.
As Iida wrestled with his personal demons and doubts, the source of that wasn't in Hosu anymore. Not because he had broken from his established habit of how many heroes he would hunt before he moved on to the next, but because he had been…invited to speak with some important people, at least, that was what they claimed, but right now, the Hero killer could say he was deeply unimpressed.
He had been warped to an empty bar, so at least there were no witnesses to worry about it. Waiting for him was some brat covered in hands who introduced himself as Shigaraki Tomura. The name rang a bell to the man. "So, you're the ones that attacked U.A.," Stain noted as he heard the name and Kurogiri's in the reports on that little incident. He also heard that outside their brazen attack, they accomplished nothing. "And you want me in your numbers?"
"Yup, with your experience, we'll make a formidable team, wouldn't you say, sir?" Shigaraki, seated at the bar, replied.
"And why should I even entertain the idea? What do you hope to gain from this?" Stain's eyes narrowed, as their assault on U.A. might have gained some favor from him, as they were attacking a place that groomed fakes, but did they even know that? Did they care?
Shigaraki's response gave him his answer as the hand-covered villain shrugged. "I want to break everything I don't like, and I don't like All Might." He held up some photos, the one at the top of which was of Midoriya, as he claimed victory over Kirishima. "But also, some other stuff. Brats that get in the way."
"I was a fool to think you'll have anything to offer. You're the type I despise the most." Stain declared his interest in this partnership.
"Huh?" Shigaraki asked as Stain reached for his knives, well, two of the many he carried. Slowly drawing out the sharpened steel, he spoke.
"No principles, no dignity, patience or goals. Just an immature brat lashing out without forethought. And you want me to join you?" Drawing both out, he flipped one around into a reverse grip. "That has to be the worst joke I've heard in a while."
"I refuse to work with someone who would kill without conviction." He finished as Shigaraki's eyes narrowed, something Kurogiri noticed as he knew the young master didn't take rejection well.
'Hero Killer: Stain. He speaks truth. The young master lacks those qualities that would ensure he can rise to the top of the villain world. So it was decided that he would be brought in to spur Shigaraki's growth so he could see further than just destruction.' The warp user thought as Stain looked ready to try and murder them both there and then, while the young master looked prepared to do the same.
'However, I hoped that he would be the cooler of the two heads,' Kurogiri turned to the screen, which was always propped on the end of the bar; no picture was shown of whoever was on the other side. "Master, should we not put an end to things?"
The response was a laugh: "Oh, let's not. Let them play out! He wouldn't truly understand if we just told him the answer."
"That's what it means to be a teacher, knowing when you should let your students stumble and fall so they can pick themselves up." Shigaraki got up, scratching at his neck as Stain joined the group of things he didn't like.
Endeavor, for all his faults in social skills and general approachability, was still the number two hero. He held this position for over twenty years despite facing opposition from heroes who were more popular, like Jeanist or Hawks, or stronger, like Ryukyu and Mirko.
While they all excelled, Endeavour truly embodied his hero name. He was a man who worked himself to the bone, never stopped training, and never stopped trying to improve so that he could one day supplant their Symbol of Peace, All Might, at the top. It was a goal he might never achieve. Still, his efforts hadn't been for naught, as it made the gap between him and others comparable to that between his flames and All Might's light.
However, Midoriya was learning that another reason Endeavour was number two was his efficiency at solving crime. Even with his steam boasting his physical capabilities, the boy arrived on the scene after Endeavour had handled the mugger and returned the stolen purse to the grateful old lady.
'That's the 4th time today.' Midoriya couldn't help but wonder how he was supposed to learn anything when Endeavour was too fast.
"You're late." Endeavour didn't turn so much as he finished handing the mugger to a policeman.
"I'm trying my best, sir, but couldn't you slow down just a little?" Midoriya replied, feeling winded but not hot…or maybe he was, but that was his norm, so it didn't count.
"I already told you; I won't slow down for you. If you want to learn, you need to keep up, understood?" Endeavour asked as he started walking down the street; his longer, stronger legs meant that his brisk walk was like a jog to a normal person, which Midoriya needed to up his pace to keep up.
"Yes, Endeavour!" He replied, as this wasn't a tour, this wasn't pretend. Endeavour had been evident from the moment he had stepped out of the changing room what was expected of him. And that was for him to stand back and watch, offering assistance only when instructed to. But he needed to keep up with the man to do that last part.
At least his costume wasn't a hindrance, as the design company hadn't returned to him about the headdress thing, so he had to do without it. Koharu, having already made a comment about how the former 'miko' of a fire God was following around a man that coated himself in bright flames at all times and could use them as most would a limb.
"Rescue, evacuation, combat. Most of our job revolves around those 3 basic things. Some heroes prefer to focus on rescue or combat, with evac lumped into the former. Still, as you witnessed at the USJ, that thinking leaves you underprepared for emergencies." Endeavor explained as they walked, his eyes never on Midoriya but on their surroundings, scanning for even the slightest hint of trouble.
"But if that's the case, why don't all heroes try to be good at everything?" Midoriya asked, with that being the first time the man looked back at him, and like Midoriya had come to expect, he wasn't impressed.
"I don't believe in being 'good' at anything, Hebimi. Heroes that think like that infuriate me. You should only strive for exceptional at the bare minimum."
"I understand, Endeavour. As a U.A. student, I can't be anything less." Midoriya replied. He might not be as…driven as Endeavour seemed to be, but Midoriya owned too many people to just half-ass things.
Endeavor could see the honesty in the boy and turned back to the world around them. Civilians gave the man the right of way, as they might have pointed and talked about seeing him, but not one dared wave at him or ask for autographs, something that Midoriya and Endeavor both found weird.
Weird as heroes, or the ones he followed and watched growing up, often interacted with the public, becoming like the trusted guardian, sibling, or parent to their communities that anyone could bring issues to or just chat with. The un-weird part came from the fact that Endeavour was the most famous exception to that, as even at fan meet-and-greets, it often looked like he didn't want to be there.
Endeavour continued their lesson. "As for your question, tell me, have you ever seen a hero like Thirteen out on Patrol? Or the Wild Wild Pussycats?"
"No, I don't think I have," Midoriya replied.
"That's because they primarily focus on rescue and evac, so they'll be called in after the incident has happened or while it is in progress. I don't operate like that. I'm a hero who spends as much time as I can patrolling; that way, I can rush to the area faster than anyone else?" Endeavour replied, which made sense to Midoriya but also led him to realize something.
"Do you need to have an understanding of the area?" Again, Endeavour looked his way, and Midoriya nearly yelped, barely holding onto confidence in the face of the man's judgemental blue eyes. "Well, I noticed earlier that you could fly pretty fast as if you knew where obstacles were, and moved to dodge them before you saw them."
Endeavour nodded. "Good eye. That is an essential skill for pros that patrol. You need to learn every bit of the layout of your jurisdiction and keep up to date with any changes. Not just streets but alleys and the skyline. That way, you can always know your exact location and quickly create the fastest route from you to any trouble; it might just save you a few seconds, but those moments could be the difference between life and death."
Happy that he was right and praised…sort of for it, Midoriya found the confidence to continue. "Is another reason that you can better predict villains? In our first hero class, we split into teams of heroes and villains to better grasp their mindset."
Keeping pace with the man, Midoriya started to think aloud about what they could make, Koharu acting as his eyes so he didn't have an embarrassing trip or bump into something. "If combined with an exceptional understanding of the area's layout, you could find or even force villains down routes that favor you."
"Correct," He was brought back to earth by Endeavour's response. The man didn't care for the mumbling or the boy getting distracted, but at least it wasn't nonsense. The boy had a good head on his shoulders. "However, you should also be flexible as any hero worth their title could be called to aid in areas they're unfamiliar with, or in the case of Mirko, make it a habit to travel from city to city."
'All Might does the same thing, but I feel he wouldn't appreciate that reminder.' Midoriya stopped himself from blurting that out. He didn't know much but could tell how much Endeavour seemed to dislike All Might. Honestly, it was similar to how Bakugo felt about him, just…less violent and delusional. Maybe he hated that he hadn't claimed that number-one spot yet?
"Don't forget why you're here. At school, it's hard work and knowledge, but here, what you need most is experience. To take those lessons and burn them into your very being. And to get that experience," Endeavour's earpiece went off.
'Oh no.' Midoriya had listened to this song and danced four times, and he had started heating up his legs and lungs.
"You need speed!" Endeavour was off, probably before the message of whatever incident was finished. Midoriya was forced to remain on the ground and chase after the man, who flew like a human comet.
"Endeavour doesn't take things easy, does he, Koharu?" Midoriya asked of his scaly friend, but instead of being annoyed or afraid of being left behind, he felt a burning desire to prove Endeavour right to offer him this chance. "Well, we can't disappoint, let's go!" His next step cracked the sidewalk before he launched himself forward; he moved so fast that between each step, he covered the same distance most would when they did a running jump.
Endeavour glanced back, seeing that the boy's body was emitting a good amount of steam, which he came to understand was just how his quirk worked. Any greater, and it would be smoke before a full body transformation. "The Suspect has stolen a motorbike and is going down route 9. The speed is currently 60km/h."
"Got it," Endeavour replied, and to Midoriya's shock, the number 2 blasted down a corner, not even slowing down. "How the-?" Midoriya didn't know what Endeavour heard, but his change could only mean one thing.
Throwing a foot forward, he skidded to slow himself down; seeing a stop sign, he jumped for it, grabbing and swinging himself down the road Endeavour took before bolting off after him.
Sadly, his quick thinking and determination didn't get him far. For the fifth time now, when he got there, the incident was handled. The villain had been caught without damaging the area or even the stolen bike.
Endeavour was effective.
"Is that the best you got, Hebimi?" Endeavour asked as Kido was already present, along with Onima. The former handcuffed the villain, and the latter wheeled the stolen motorcycle from where it had gone into the bush.
Coming to a stop, Midoriya started to sweat from these insane dead sprints, but he refused to try to excuse himself. He was late, but he will do better. He had to. "No, I can push it harder. I won't slow you down, Endeavour."
'That move just now…how did he do it? Without losing speed, he pulled off that turn like it was nothing.' Midoriya's gaze grew introspective as he thought about that turn. It was familiar, but he couldn't figure out what.
'He's got the drive; it seems he's one of those types…' Endeavour was reminded that the boy seemed to be the skittish type but simultaneously the sort that could be relied on when it mattered. It was irritating, but at least he had a backbone. "I don't care what you say. I care about what you do. Look there, what do you see?" He pointed to the side, with Midoriya jogging up to see.
"A busy street; wait, was this guy?" There was a sizable alley, one without many obstacles between them and the street. The villain had a motorcycle, so he had to have planned to head down to try to escape, putting the lives of the people on the road at risk.
Midoriya realized that Endeavour picked up on that in seconds, if not sooner, and moved to counter it using his familiarity to find the shortest possible route. "A few seconds…" He uttered as the Flame hero turned and took off, literally. His flames propelled up and away, leaving the five in his wake and two to play catch-up…again.
"Go on, it's rare for the big guy to teach anyone," Kido told him.
"Right," Midoriya replied as he let out a breath before exploding. His form shifted to stone and flames before he took off, his serpentine tail propelling him forward much faster than before. This speed boasts, and his shifting to move on the road rather than the sidewalk allowed him to catch up with Endeavour, who had taken mercy on him by not flying over buildings he couldn't reach.
"Endeavour, aren't we going to work with your sidekicks?" Midoriya asked him, his voice coming out different, as it always did when he wasn't in human form.
"Top heroes need to be able to do everything by themselves; failing that, they should be able to hold out till someone more capable can arrive," Endeavour replied, sparing him a glance and seeing the snake was still secured around his shoulders unharmed by what should be a scorching level of heat. "And are you finally getting serious?"
"I've been serious from the start, but if I'm to keep up with you, I need to use every bit of power I have, even if I'm exhausted," Midoriya replied, his eye-less sockets conveying a level of determination that Endeavour liked to see. But that didn't mean he wouldn't put the boy through his paces.
"Then let's see what you can do. Your assignment for your internship with me is simple: Keep up," Endeavour instructed as his speed increased. Just like before, Midoriya was left playing catch-up, but he would be darned if he didn't throw all he had at it.
True to his word, Midoriya chased after the man for as long as possible, trying to learn the layout to get closer. Still, the number 2 was like a mirage, always out of reach for him, but he refused to give up, even as he felt himself tire as he rapidly burned through his food stores from breakfast. When lunchtime came, Midoriya expected a man like Endeavor to skip it and resigned himself to toughing through the growing hunger till dinner, only for Endeavour to land perfectly outside a small noodle place and enter.
His casual approach implied it wasn't a danger or villain incident, so Midoriya, upon reaching it, returned to normal and quickly followed the man. He found that the small establishment felt very traditional and that the family ran it with plenty of clients. Clients who had given way for Endeavour to approach the register where the cashier was had an even stranger reaction.
"Afternoon, Endeavour. Should I get you the usual?" The woman, a small, delicate person who would be shorter than even Komori, had a pleasant smile. Midoriya had gotten used to people keeping their distance from Endeavour. Still, she treated him like she would anyone else. Weirder still was that Endeavour didn't seem annoyed by her overly friendly attitude.
"Yes, and whatever the brat wants," Endeavour replied, pointing over his shoulder toward Midoriya.
"Oh?" The woman, who Midoriya noted had rich dark hair with natural blue highlights, needed to lean to the side as there was no way she was going to look over the man to see him. "Sorry about that, I didn't see ya there! Welcome to Tomioka's Grill and Noodles. What would you be having?"
Her smile seemed incredibly pleasant and approachable, though Midoriya found himself on the spot as he didn't know they would eat. His embarrassment only grew when his stomach chose that moment to groan so loud the entire place heard it, leaving him flustered as he yelped, trying to find words until Endeavour told him to stop wasting time and order, adding that the boy should eat his fill as they won't have another break until they returned to the agency.
Midoriya might have argued against that…but he had a feeling that, given how Endeavour was glaring at him, he wouldn't accept that. So while Endeavour waited for his Yakisoba, Midoriya ordered two servings of Tonkotsu, three servings of curry udon, two bowls of rice, and two servings of Pork shogayaki.
The other diners balked as he listed off foods, some whispering how he intended to finish all of that. Still, the nice lady just smiled as her dainty fingers kept pace with his order, putting it to send it to her gloomy husband working in the kitchen. Endeavour was similar in that he didn't react in a way anyone would assume to learning he would be on the hook to pay for what should be the servings for 11, not 2.
Instead, he led him to the roof where they could keep an eye on the city, their food being delivered by the lady and 2 others who looked similar to her but were much taller with hair that lacked her blue highlights, but both son and daughter at their mother's eyes.
This led to their current situation: Endeavour and Midoriya ate their lunch. Midoriya had already consumed a bowl of rice and two udon bowls, while Endeavour had only finished one of his yakisobas, the number 2's usual being three servings of the stuff. "Hebimi, is it fair to say that your quirk isn't reliant on stamina built from rest?"
"No, Endeavour, or at least, it wholly." Midoriya paused in his consumption, passing some dried meat to Koharu. "My quirk mainly relies on my food reserves, so I tend to eat more than most, with only a fraction of that being rest-related."
Endeavor figured that as much as the boy had been slowing not even an hour after he transformed, he doubted the kid noticed. But his speed dropped to his pre-transformation levels, and the heat he picked up off him had similarly dropped.
"And you don't suffer blowback from your quirk burning you?" He asked, as the boy looked fine, no sign that he had burned himself alive earlier.
"Any damage it does heal itself, even some pretty…intense battle damage can't keep me down long, but depending on how much I need to heal, it can drain my fuel reserves faster." Midoriya paused as he recalled the USJ and being torn in two before returning to eating. No way Endeavour would give him more time than necessary, and he wouldn't want to anger him by leaving his food half-finished.
"As for my transformation, even just being in it burns a lot of fuel, so I can't use it long-term." He said between mouthfuls of food, his shoulders dropping. "A lot of good it did, I couldn't catch up with you once."
"If you could, with barely a semester of training and non-speed quirk, I would up and retire out of shame," Endeavour told him as he, too, continued to eat that they were on a tight schedule. "As for your other form, you use the heat your steam builds up to maximize your body's potential to increase its power, explaining the speed and strength boast, correct?"
"Oh, yes, that's right." Midoriya shook his head.
"Any reason why you can't push it further than that?" Endeavour asked.
Midoriya frowned as he looked away, lost in thought. "I wondered about it, but we studied it when I was under Ryukyu's care. My quirk might mainly be a fire type, but it's more of a volcanic type. There's only so much I can increase my steam's heat before it shifts to my other form. Even then, my body just can't handle the pressure build-up, I take it too far, and my limbs can shoot off."
That hadn't been pleasant either. It was nothing like the USJ, as he hardly felt it. One moment, Hado was cheering for him to take it further; the next, one leg from the knee down was halfway across the training room, and the other from the thigh had nearly hit Hado-sempai in the face.
Considering the gruesome incident, she didn't take it too badly; being more apologetic, she couldn't keep him before he fell on his face. Having collected his lost limbs, before they re-attached them, they found that they had both swelled considerably as the steam that had been contained in them distorted their size till they just…couldn't contain the pressure.
Endeavour absorbed that, turning it over as he tried to figure out a proper workaround for the kid. As far as where he stood now, he could go pro, but he'll never get close to the top 200. The number 2 would be damned if he trained someone like that.
"When it comes to quirks like our own, it's important to study the natural phenomenon that relate to it. In your case, you need to study volcanoes and how they operate; once you do, you need to take those lessons and train yourself till you can use them without thinking." He explained.
"How would that work?" Midoriya asked as the man looked over the city he protected, the people whose lives he watched over to ensure disaster or villains couldn't injure or kill any of them.
"Parallel processing, people do it daily without so much as thinking. You don't think about moving your feet when you walk, do you? You need to learn to do it, one step at a time, until it comes naturally as breathing. Allowing you to go from crawling to running while handling other tasks if you please." Endeavour explained it to him as he finished his second bowl, placing it down on the table that had been left up here for him ever since he started coming here. Shinobu caught on quickly. He didn't like sitting with others or being in a space he couldn't promptly leave should the need arise.
"We'll work on your quirk but also your understanding of it. Once you've got the basics down for both, we'll begin training you on how to use that knowledge in the field till it's as easy as walking. Is that understood?" Endeavour looked at him; there was something different in him then. Midoriya didn't know what or why, but it compelled him to challenge him and prove that he could do this.
Midoriya threw aside table manners and threw back his bowl of rice, finishing it in record time before slamming it back to the table, his gaze curious and worried as he met Endeavour's. "Crystal, though, do we have the time for that?"
"Don't be an idiot. No matter how strong the power is, its foundation is built on a steady accumulation of experience and skills and refined through the same. There are…exceptions," Endeavour replied, thinking of the back he had been chasing for over 20 years and how…easy that man made it look.
"But for most heroes, we build our abilities brick by brick, and it's a never-ending process. From your first day on the job to the last." Endeavour finished.
"Even you, Endeavour?"
The flame hero snorted, his flames flashing with his irritation. "Especially me. I wouldn't be worthy of my title as the number two hero, much less my hero name, if I didn't work to better myself every chance I get. To shave off even just a 10th of a second from a rescue, defeat a villain with one less blow."
"You said that your quirk is volcanic in nature, right?" Endeavour turned to him, and when Midoriya nodded, the man continued. "Well, perhaps it's similar to Hellfire as we can't sit idle just like the flames. We'll burn through the dark nights, push back the cold, always striving to burn brighter, burn hotter."
Midoriya met his gaze, unmoving for a moment before he threw aside table manners and threw back the bowl of rice, finishing it in record time. The same was true for the remainder of his meal, which he washed down with his glass of water.
Slamming it onto the table, he stood as his body rapidly heated up till he transformed. Slithering up to Endeavour, he rose on his tail to add a couple inches to his height. "Let's get back to it, I need to learn, and you need to keep on helping people."
Endeavour nodded, with no verbal response, before the man took off. The humans came out to search for anyone in need or villains who needed to be stopped. Midoriya followed after him, shooting an arm towards a nearby building; when it latched, he reeled it in while his other hand blew off its hand, revealing a canon that he used to propel himself, using a style of movement he had seen just one, at the Sports Festival.
Shifting which hand was the grappling line and which was the cannon, Midoriya slowly learned how to swing through the streets, using his cannon to propel his momentum while his tail acted as a counterbalance. It was sloppy, and he nearly hit obstacles more than once but slowly gained experience with it.
'Ryukyu...Hado, everyone. You've given me this chance to chase my dream, which is a blessing, and I can't ever thank you enough. I'm still behind; they know more about their quirks than I do mine because I refused to train with it, to learn every facet of its abilities.' Midoriya thought as he followed Endeavour, who had decided to make it harder for him, flying through alleys and over buildings. If he returned to the ground, he would surely lose him.
So he wouldn't touch the ground. Midoriya smiled as if he were playing. The floor was lava, except he was the lava. Curling his tail so when he landed on a building's roof, he used it as a spring to launch himself forward, clearing the rest of it, and the next in a single jump as he pointed both arms behind him and fired off another weak blast of fire, sending him flying forward as he kept his eye on his goal.
The human comet.
'But that's fine. Because I'll catch up. Brick by brick. Day by day, I won't just learn. I'll master it to be the type of hero I want!'
