School Idols of the Lighthouse War

Scene 5

The Awful Days and a New Base

At the time with Avril, she was very busy working on a fake plane, while the alarms rang off.

Avril: Bad news for us at the prison. The enemy fell for our decoy base.

With all the fake planes and trucks we had out, it must've looked to them like the Osean Air Force was about to go on the attack.

The Erusean bombers attacked the Zapland Air Base. That's the main base that they needed to destroy. One bomber and a recon plane however, also checked on the north for another air base that needed to be destroyed, but the unknown SAMs shot them down.

Avril: Day after day, after day, after day, they bombed us.

Osea didn't give a damn. We weren't soldiers to them, so… go ahead. Bomb us!

In their eyes, we were expendable. Worth less than the fake planes in the bunkers.

No biggie.

While I made fake planes, they had me put together some working ones.

Then, some genius at HQ decided we should send it up, so the base looked legit.

Thankfully, we had people to crew 'em.

It didn't matter what we were locked up here for anymore. Top brass needed pilots and criminals were all they had.

The penal fighters took off...

A crook, a gambler, an anarchist… just your typical lowlifes.

They threw each one of 'em in a cockpit and sent them up to intercept the enemy's planes.

But in the end… it was all just for show.

So, up they went. Day after day, after day…

Today, there was a abandoned, now reactivated air base very close to us. It was reactivated three weeks ago.

I begin to wonder what they are doing so close to us.

But we learned that the air base wasn't reactivated by us, but by the Republican Empire of Satsuma.

This former feudal nation has a powerful military tradition that we even didn't know about.

Their warriors are stalwart and honorable, bound for any duty.

And what they have, is a pilot that was suspected, but got cleared by an unexpected surprise.

My dad died flying for the Osean Air Force.

When your allies are surrounded, one of the most dangerous missions is giving them cover to retreat.

Whoever signed up for that was a real hero.

But even more dangerous than that, was being the one who had to cover the rear guard's retreat.

That was my dad's job, and one time… …he called it off.

Said anyone else would've done the same.

I found out from a war buddy of his, when he came to tell me how my dad died.

The next time a retreat happened, my dad volunteered to be in the rear guard.

What a dumbass.

He died, all right.

No one came to help.

The news nearly broke me.

Of all the ways to get killed, that's gotta be the most pathetic one ever. Am I right?

There's not much rumor about these types of pilots. But one of those pilots, the girls, they took her along a little while ago.

You get this… Some of our guys talk in the cellblock say he was sent to that battlegroup 'cuz she was the one who killed Harling.

The President of Osea during the last war, remember?

She might be the one that sent my dad on that suicide mission.

She might be the reason I had to live with my grandpa.

And why me and my Gramps started building a supersonic jet. She's the reason I ended up here.

But however, she was suddenly acquitted of the murder of the former president! That is very unexpected! And now, she's got sent to that Air Division so that she can be of good use.

Maybe I should give that girl a thank-you note for killing him, or a sorry letter for what has happened during her mission…

…nah.

God, I hate the smell of this place. It's all fake and lies and anything that's hated on you. It reeks though.

She got lucky though, their base is much better build, much cleaner, much more sophisticated than ours, and they are very determined to fight.

Better than us, because we are much restricted to fight.
